[Photo shows Fey, a grey ticked cat with a white stripe down her belly, white paws, white chin, and a white four-pointed star on her nose, with yellow-green eyes. She is lying on her side, with one paw curled over.]

And I finally figured out how the citation thing works with researchblogging.org so all my new posts will be included on their aggregator and I’ll try to import the relevant older ones as well.
I also want to get back to posting some raw science data that will probably never make it into a publication. BrainWindows, the future journal of calibration curves and negative results

We are on vacation for a quick week in Marco Island, Florida!
There is a contest at Lydia’s Uniforms blog for the best of the top 25 nursing blogs.

First of all, the pictures are of my two sons, Ryland (22) and Kingsley (14). Ryland is pictured with the longer hair; Kingsley is my ‘little’ one with shorter hair. The picture of all three includes my father, Jerry (84). He has rented a condominium here every winter for the last 28 years to get out of the beastly cold in Iowa! He stated this was the coldest winter in southern Florida that he can remember in all of those years. My youngest son was watching the news on the computer last night and learned that our home town had just received another ‘last blast...

Since 1999, I’ve been attending the SXSW interactive conference off and on over the years. This year’s SXSWi conference (one leg of the annual three-leg SXSW interactive, film and music festival) was in some ways no different than in years past, but in other ways, way different (with its highest attendance yet — somewhere between 13,000 and 14,000 people). Here are a few tidbits of random insights from this year’s conference outing.

Conference-goers look forward to the keynotes. They are, by definition, the highlight of the day and sometimes of the entire conference. Keynotes cannot just be individuals promoting their own work, product or company (and believing the audience can generalize from this usually very-unique set of experiences). They ne...

People in recovery from alcoholism, addiction and codependency are in the process of discovering and rediscovering their sexuality. Sensuality and stimulation become important for, perhaps, dormant sexual responses.
The G-spot is one of the high spots of many a love-making experience. It was discovered in 1950 but unlike most newly-discovered areas, this one wasn’t found by your typical beardy explorer with gangrene and frostbite.
It was discovered by Gynaecologist Ernst Grafenberg. He found a highly erogenous zone inside the vagina that gets bigger when directly stimulated. This discovery caused quite a sensation, as you can imagine, but his revelation has been doubted for quite some time.

The strength of our recovery is in direct proportion to our ability to laugh at ourselves.
Laughter heals, particularly the laughter that comes when we understand the lifesaving difference between “how it was” before recovery and “how it is” living in sobriety.
These hearty cartoons and humorous anecdotes reflect with powerful clarity how our drinking or drug-using days contrast with our lives today.
Laughter helps us celebrate our recovery and it reminds us how grateful we are for sobriety and for the priceless camaraderie of people in Twelve Step Fellowships.

A study conducted by researchers at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust (UK) has indicated that eating small amounts of chocolate every day can help to reduce the symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
People who took part in the study earlier this year reported feeling significantly less fatigue after eating 45g of specially formulated dark chocolate each day for eight weeks.
They also reported feeling more fatigue when they stopped eating the dark chocolate and were receiving a placebo instead.
CFS has long been a condition which has challenged the NHS as its causes are still not fully understood. Diagnosing the condition is difficult as many of the symptoms are similar to other illnesses and, since there is currently no known cure, treatment concentrates mainly on managing ...

1. The best position for his enjoyment
Practically every animal species utilizes the rear-entry “doggy-style” position, so it is a natural one for humans to enjoy, as well. While you won’t have face-to-face contact, there are many benefits. It’s great for guys because it gives them full control.
2. Find your man’s “hidden” zones
Yes, men love to be touched sensually too. I call these “hidden” zones because ...

This study is very important to modern society. This is especially so since the sexual revolution opened peoples minds to a broader range of sexuality and sexual expression.
Historically, the reasons people have sex have been assumed to be few in number and simple in nature–

to reproduce,
to experience pleasure, or
to relieve sexual tension.

Several theoretical perspectives suggest that motives for engaging in sexual intercourse may be larger in number and psychologically complex in nature. The survey included heterosexual and gay men.
Here are the top reasons men have sex;

I was attracted to the person
It feels good
I wanted to experience the physical pleasure
It’s fun
I wanted to show my affection to the person
I was sexually aroused and wanted the release
I was ‘‘horny’’

One of the “fun” parts of being a Master’s student (fun in quotes because it depends on how you take it) is that you get to be a guinea pig. Not just in your own experience as a learner, but at the mercy of professors doing research, doctoral students conducting experiments, and random investigators from other universities sending out electronic surveys via email for you to fill out regarding all aspects of your counseling life. All of them say participation is completely optional and there’s no compensation, but would be very much appreciated.
Last semester, I pretty much agreed to participate in everything. My helping nature made me think, “You might be asking others to do this someday yourself, and good karma comes around.”
This semester, I am way more protectiv...

All About Mocktails: Drinks for Sober Celebrations
There was a time when nondrinkers had very few choices when it came to specialty drinks. Shirley Temples and Virgin Marys were the typical options – otherwise a club soda or cola was the usual request for kids and abstaining adults alike.
But times have certainly changed! Bartender extraordinaire Tony Abou-Ganim of Las Vegas designed a special “mocktail” for Paris Hilton’s birthday party, and alcohol-free pomegranate spritzers were served on an episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

So, what...

“Seeking sexual satisfaction is a basic desire, and masturbation is often our first teenage natural sexual activity. It’s the way we discover our eroticism, the way we learn to respond sexually, the way we learn to love ourselves and to build self-esteem.”

And, said Woody Allen, “it’s having sex with the one you love.”
Many people in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, ACOA or codependency may not be in a sexually active relationship. Relations may need to be rekindled or new relationships may be needed. Additionally, many people may not want to endanger their new found sobriety by being involved in an emotionally charged relationship.

Many people want and need to be close to others as they grow older. This includes the desire to continue an active, satisfying sex life as they grow older. But, with aging, there may be changes that can cause problems.
This can be more critical for people in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, co-dependency, ACOA, gambling or sex addiction.
What Are Normal Changes?
Normal aging brings physical changes in both men and women. These changes sometimes affect the ability to have and enjoy sex. A woman may notice changes in her vagina. As a woman ages, her vagina can shorten and narrow. Her vaginal walls can become thinner and also a little stiffer. Most women will have less vaginal lubrication. These changes could affect sexual function and/or pleasure. Talk with your doctor about these proble...

Love, Sex & Intimacy in Recovery from alcoholism or addiction.
Sex in recovery can be the trickiest problem of all. So true for heterosexuals, gays and lesbians.
Why? Because there’s so much room for things to go wrong. And feelings get so distorted when they do.
Take sexual dysfunction. After cleaning up from chemicals, many dependent persons — particularly men — find that they’re unable to function sexually.
Impotence can be frustrating — for both partners. It can trigger a flood of self-loathing in a man and a current of tension and self-doubt in a woman.
If it happens to you, don’t panic or take it personally. Impotence usually isn’t a major crisis. Time, understanding, and simple communication almost always make it better.
That’s bec...

No. I'm not insane. I just have ADHD.Generally speaking, I'm constantly short on cash and must save up over a long period of time for my toys. So I find myself in a quandary. My daughter heads off to college with my MacBook in April (as I promised her), but my savings account isn't quite MacBook Pro/Air ready yet. What to do?Apple, sensing my need, released the iPad upon the world. The clouds parted. The tech was slick. It was only $499. I was set. Or was I? Had I found my solution, or was I just on another ADHD fueled hunt again?I use my MacBook for reading news, researching my novel, reading news, blogging, writing my novel, and reading news. I also manage my network & files with it, as well as download an obscene amount of TV content from all over the world. The iPad can easily let me r...

Laughter is a tranquilizer with no side effects.” -Arnold Glascow
One of the most amazing experiences in early recovery from alcoholism was the night I told a story against myself.
I laughed at my foolishness in a new light and every one at the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting laughed with me.
The incident that I reminisced about no longer was painful. I had learnt to laugh at myself.

Laugh in recovery
When I first came to Alcoholics Anonymous I quite quickly grasped the two concepts that have been the foundations of my sobriety, the One Day At A Time (ODAAT) principle, and lots of Meetings.
For a few years this seemed enough, and indeed these two simple ideas are enough to keep me sober. But then I realised that there was more to living than just not drinking. I think this is where the Steps come in as the third concept of AA – recovery. If I follow the Steps (and don’t drink ODAAT and do lots of meetings) I think my life must get better and fuller.
I often heard the chairperson of a meeting say at the end “you may leave these rooms and never drink again, if you so desire”. Someone once added “and be happy about it!” which is where AA is...

Have some fun. Loosen up a bit. Enjoy life!
For co-dependents having fun is often a skill lost in antiquity.
We do not have to be so sombre and serious. We do not have to be so reflective, so critical, so bound up within the rigid parameters and ourselves others, and often ourselves, have placed around us.
This is life, not a funeral service. Have some fun with it. Enter into it. Participate. Experiment. Take a risk. Be spontaneous. Do not always be so concerned about doing it right, doing the appropriate thing.
Do not always be so concerned about what others will think or say. What they think and say are their issues not ours. Do not be so afraid of making a mistake. Do not be so fearful and proper. Do not inhibit yourself so much.
God did not intend us to be so inhibited, so restricted, ...

A bar of chocolate, a long soak in the bath, a snooze in the middle of the afternoon, a leisurely stroll in the park. These are the things that make us the most happy, according to new research from The University of Nottingham.
In a study commissioned by the National Lottery, Dr Richard Tunney of the University’s School of Psychology found that it’s the simple things in life that impact most positively on our sense of well being.

This article may help stir desires for pleasures foregone or forgotten. This is true for straights, gays and lesbians.
Preparation is key, so be prepared. That’s a good lesson for life in general and a vital lesson for sex.
Great sex isn’t just penetration – the build-up is a very important part. In fact most women can’t reach orgasm without it. Foreplay makes the whole thing last much longer and, to be frank, is really rather good.
If just the thought of sex is enough to get you raring, slow down a bit – your partner may want to take a little more time. Women generally take longer to become sexually aroused than men; the fire needs to be stoked. Try and keep foreplay going until you both just can’t wait for penetration.
Foreplay will increase the chances of org...

Sensual thoughts?
Do you experience flights of fantasy when you have sex, followed by intense guilt that you might have betrayed your partner? Many people in recovery from alcoholism, addiction and co-dependency seem to have this sort of reaction.
See list of male and female fantasies at end of this article.
You might be surprised to know that sexual fantasies are far more common than you think, and can in fact add value to your relationship.
A sexual fantasy, also called an erotic fantasy, is a deliberate fantasy or pattern of thoughts with the goal of creating or enhancing sexual feelings; it is mental imagery that an individual considers erotic. A fantasy can be a long, drawn-out story or a quick mental flash of sexual imagery; its purpose can range from sexual motivations, such as sexu...

You know all of the good-for-you arguments for becoming more physically active, but here’s an especially attractive reward: exercise can improve your sex life.
This is especially so for women in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, adult children of alcoholism, co-dependency, compulsive gambling or depression.
Being physically active helps you feel more interested in sex, gives you the energy and strength you need for enjoying your partner or yourself more, reduces the stress that can block sexual interest and builds the muscles used in sexual intimacy.
Research shows that exercise boosts women’s sexual arousal—even if they were experiencing low sexual desire before starting physical activity. That ef...

The best time to grow a best friend is before you need one!
1. People Equal Friends.
There is a certain chemistry with friends just as in a love relationship. Therefore, contact with other people is the first building block to grow a friend. Friends can’t grow in a vacuum. Best friends take time.

Talking between friends requires reciprocity. In a mutually satisfying friendship, both friends talk and both friends listen. Friends talk appropriately to each other.

40+ Sexuality
Variety can be the spice of intercourse
Recovery from alcoholism, addiction, gambling or co-dependency is common for people in their forth decade. Often sexuality in relationships has been absent or troubled. This may be true for straight, gays or lesbians.
Too many men and women in long-term relationships lament that “the thrill is gone” but often don’t understand why. Some blame themselves or their partners or tell themselves that sexual boredom is as inevitable a part of growing older as wrinkles and reading glasses. It doesn’t have to be that way. And here’s why: To coin a cliché, variety can be the spice of intercourse.
There are many kinds of sex play, but here let’s consider intercourse and different ways to do it — that is, experiment with positions. Th...

Have vaginal orgasm and be happy
Having a penis-vaginal orgasm rather than just clitoral stimulation or masturbation results in a better life.
Researchers studied over 1,200 women in Sweden and found that vaginal orgasm resulted in greater satisfaction with sex life, mental health, relationships with partners and friends, and life in general. Additionally these women had greater sexual desire and less recent masturbation.
Better sex life was also associated with their first sexual orgasm being from intercourse rather than masturbation.
Vaginal orgasms were not the result of partner masturbation or cunnilingus.
It seems that straight sex, penis – vagina is still the best sex. Other ways of having an orgasm, at least for women, are OK but not as satisfying.

A storm of insanity slowly takes over
As opposed to the 12-Steps to recovery here is the suggested program to insanity.

I decided I could handle my emotional problems if other people would just quit trying to run my life.
I firmly believed that there is no greater power than myself, and anyone who said so was insane.
I made a decision to remove my will and my life from God who didn’t understand me anyhow.
I made a searching and thorough moral inventory of everyone I knew so they couldn’t fool me and take advantage of my good nature.
I sought these people out and tried to get them to admit to me, by God, the exact nature of their wrongs.
I became willing to help these people get rid of these defects of character.
I was humble enough to ask these people to remove their shortcom...

A bit of humour mixed with spirituality
Everything I need to know about life, I learned from Noah and his Ark

Don’t miss the boat.
Remember that we are all in the same boat.
Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark.
Stay fit. When you’re 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.
Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.
Build your future on high ground.
For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.
Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.
When you’re stressed, float a while.
Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.
No matter the storm, when you are with the Higher Power, there’s always a rainbow waiting…

Oh, and be...

Liz Scott Recovery Cooking
In the Sober Kitchen by Liz Scott
So, what exactly do we mean by a “sober kitchen?” Although it means much more than merely removing alcohol containing ingredients from our cupboards and fridge, striving for an alcohol-free kitchen is definitely a good place to start.
Why is this important? Because contrary to the old wives’ tale, alcohol does not burn off in the cooking process.
In 1989 a USDA study proved that between 5% and 85% of the alcohol added to a dish is retained depending upon the cooking method, type of alcohol used, and the amount of time it is exposed to heat.
Indeed, the act of flambéing, or setting a pan alight, actually retains a whopping 75%! Surprised? I was too, but even more surprising was that addiction researchers discovered...

in Recovery
When I first came to Alcoholics Anonymous I quite quickly grasped the two concepts that have been the foundations of my sobriety, the One Day At A Time principle, and lots of Meetings.
For a while this seemed enough, and indeed these two simple ideas were enough to keep me sober.
But then I realised that there was more to living than just not drinking. I think this is where the Steps come in as the third concept of AA – recovery. If I follow the Steps (and don’t drink just for today and do lots of meetings) I think my life must get better and fuller.
You’ve probably heard the chairperson of a meeting say at the end “you may leave these rooms and never drink again”. Someone once added “and be happy about it!” which is where AA is about ...

This article from PsychCentral tells the story of an elderly women who found love again and gives some pointers.
Want to find love again? There’s no reason to think that you can’t find someone to love. A few simple pointers may help.

Start with giving yourself a pep talk.
Don’t try to replace someone you’ve lost.
Let friends and acquaintances know that you are open to meeting someone special.
Be honest about what you’re looking for.
Consider online dating services as a way to enlarge your pool of eligible singles.
Be reasonably cautious
Trust your instincts.
Know what you want.
When you find yourself wanting to spend more time with someone who seems promising, please remember that you both already have pretty full lives.
Don’t expect your adult kids to love your new love &#821...

A Relaxation Exercise
Sometimes you need to relax when you’re out and about and it’s not convenient to take twenty minutes to lie down and relax totally: maybe on your way to a crucial appointment, in an interview, giving a presentation, or any other situation normally regarded as highly stressful. Here is a way to relax that my clients have found work for them, and that you can use to relax anywhere.
Peripheral vision
Look at the wall opposite you and find a point which is straight ahead and a little above eye level. Continue to look at this point in soft focus throughout this exercise. After a while you may find that as you concentrate on this point the rest of the room goes a little dark, or vague, or fuzzy, and you develop a kind of tunnel vision. We use this tunnel vision a lot in...

Aaron and I are off to a conference on love this weekend. Then a wedding (I'm assuming the focus of that will also be love). Fun is fun...but it can also be exhausting! My pain made a major resurgence the last day of vacation, and continues today. Wondering how I will make it through a 14 hour day tomorrow, and how Percocet will affect my ability to soak up the conference. Prayers, please? (Source: Turquoise Gates)

Oral Sex and Sexually Transmitted Infections
Many people in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, gambling and co-dependency may be exploring their sexuality from a new perspective. Safer and more enjoyable oral sex can be an exciting experience.
Compared to sex, oral sex is considered a lower-risk sexual activity. There is zero risk of unwanted pregnancy and a lower chance of passing along a sexually transmitted disease. However, “lower risk” does not mean “no risk” – there is no such thing as 100 percent safe sex, and oral sex is no exception.
Not just cold sores. People may tend to think of embarrassing cold sores and the Herpes virus when they think of oral sex and sexually transmitted infections (STI’s). However the majority of common sexually transmitted infections can be ...

Sex takes 3 to 13 minutes
This story may help people who are discovering their new sexuality in recovery. Recovery from alcoholism, addiction, gambling and co-dependency is a journey of discovery of self. And, self includes ones sexuality.
Maybe men had it right all along: It doesn’t take long to be satisfied in bed.
A survey of sex therapists concluded the optimal amount of time for sexual intercourse was 3 to 13 minutes. The findings, to be published in the May issue of the Journal of Sexual Medicine, strike at the notion that endurance is the key to a great sex life.
If that sounds like good news to you, don’t cheer too loudly. The time does not count foreplay, and the therapists did rate sexual intercourse that lasts from 1 to 2 minutes as “too short.”

There was a spiritual man who had a little boy that he loved very much.
Everyday after work the man would come home and play with the little boy. He would always spend all of his extra time playing with the little boy.
One night, while the man was at work, he realized that he had extra work to do for the evening, and that he wouldn’t be able to play with his little boy. But, he wanted to be able to give the boy something to keep him busy. So, looking around his office, he saw a magazine with a large map of the world on the cover. He got an idea. He removed the map, and then patiently tore it up into small pieces. Then he put all the pieces in his coat pocket.
When he got home, the little boy came running to him and was ready to play. The man explained that he had extra work to do ...

I had to learn to play. When I came to ACA some of the members encouraged me to play by asking what I had never done as a child that I wanted to do.

Romantic sex is the healthiest
Lose weight. Reduce stress. Lower your cholesterol level. Improve your circulation. Live longer. Stay younger. Sounds like an ad for a new wonder drug right? In fact it’s a partial list of the benefits of humanity’s oldest and most pleasurable pastime – sex.
Most of us are aware of the feel-good benefits of sex while we’re engaged in it, but do you also know that there are benefits which carry on after the sweaty bodies have dried and the sweet talk has reverted to sports? For instance:
Maintaining Ideal Body Weight
Sexual intercourse burns approximately 150 calories per half hour. Here’s how that stacks up against some other activities that may be part of your fitness regime: yoga 114 calories per half hour, dancing – 129,...

For those of you that read my blog…it has been a while since I last posted. Since then, I have had another baby and gotten a rather successful freelance writing career off the ground. After learning I was pregnant with my 4th baby last February, I knew that I could no longer continue to work as a NICU nurse and stay sane! My family always comes first, so I decided to leave my job and stay at home full time to get the house and the children in order.
BUT….we did need a bit more money each month, so I decided to try and make money from home. Now for all of you stay at home mommies who are looking for a little extra cash each month..you know it isn’t easy. But it can be done. I decided to look inside of myself at my other talents and try to use them to make extra money. I wa...

In many countries, prescription drug advertising is banned, but pharma companies can still give little gifts to doctors. Now a Spanish blog covers, as reported by Advertising in Health, a lot of gadgets and gifts which sometimes are quite weird or have no functionality.

And if you think doctors are fed up with these, just take a look at the two videos below. The first one becomes interesting at 0:35.

I came across quite a special medical exhibit on BoingBoing featuring fascinating images and ancient medical gadgets:
There’s a fascinating exhibit at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo right now called Medicine and Art: Imagining a Future for Life and Love. It showcases 150 works of art that represent our fascination with the human body, both as a living machine that we’re constantly trying to understand and as an artistic medium. The iconic example of this is Leonardo Da Vinci’s cranium drawings from the 15th century (pictured right), part of the Royal Collection belonging to Queen Elizabeth II.

Ok, sorry for the delay in cross posting this, but my head has been up my bum for the last month. Anyway, I finally got round to removing the bits where I whinge about my life, so here is G to I, with J to L coming up soon. Probably.

G is for…

Gardens
Our unit has a few courtyards which are mostly used for smoking, hiding contraband in and, in the case of one patient, locating insects for use as a nutritious snack. Some of the courtyards have bits of grass and some plants. One of them has been turned into an allotment, thus we grow our own veg for patient cooking sessions and to sell to staff at christmas (big bag of mixed veg for a quid, bargain*). We also have ducks, chickens and a variety of small furry...

Critical Thinking is the process by which we look for errors and find answers. Whereas Lateral Thinking is the finding of solutions through a creative process. Research tells us that creative thinking can help us be more effective problem solvers. So, give this fun exercise a try. Change one letter to spin a classic movie into a parody of itself. The possibilities - and chuckles - are infinite. In the end, we tried to focus on situations that “typify” what we PWDs tend to go through [...] (Source: Diabetes Mine)

I’ve given more than a hundred presentations so far and I had time to find the best device for creating slideshows. My choice is Prezi.com. Now I do all of my presentations in Prezi format and the audience always likes it. I thought I could forget about Powerpoint forever.
Now Nancy Duarte, author of the bible of presentations, Slide:ology, published a video featuring Powerpoint 2010. (Source: ScienceRoll)

Faux Review: A report on the zombie outbreak of 2009: how mathematics can save us (no, really)
An outbreak of zombification wreaked havoc recently in Canada and the rest of the world. Mathematical models were created to establish the speed of zombie infection and evaluate potential scenarios for intervention, mainly because mathematicians don’t have anything better to do with their time. Chocolate is the most widely and frequently craved food. People readily admit to being ‘addicted to chocolate’ or willingly label themselves as ‘chocoholics’. A popular explanation for this is that chocolate contains mood-enhancing (psychoactive) ingredients that give it special appeal.
Evidence and logic, however, find little support for this. [...] (Source: Recovery Is Sexy.com)

Do you remember the Dance Your PhD contest? The Science Dance Match-Up challenge is not a new one but still features really interesting videos.
This experiment began back in October 2008 with a challenge to scientists to interpret their Ph.D. theses in dance form, capture the dances on video, and upload them onto YouTube. Six weeks later, a panel of expert judges chose four winners, hailing from Australia, Germany, Canada, and the United States. (All of them have artistic backgrounds.)
The scientists then passed the baton to the artists. Each scientist was paired with a choreographer. Between November and January, the choreographers studied in depth a peer-reviewed research article from their scientists’ labs. The scientists helped them come to grips with the research and its underly...

I was inspired by Bottlecappie at Diary of a Quitter to participate in Mine Enemy Grows Older which is a collaborative poetry project run by Rick Mobbs.
I have never in my life written poetry but I do love art. Since the whole concept of this project is to look at an image prompt, which is a work of art by Rick Mobbs, and see what it inspires out of you, I figured I would take a shot at it.
So without further ado... Here is my first shot (I'm getting embarrassed already!) at poetry.

No Containment
There is a piece of me in all I see
An infinite amount of connections that will always be
I'm in the ground, in the sky, in the sun, in the moon
I'm intertwined in the earth's continuous tune
The shadows from the moon and the brightness from the sun
Keeps our natural flow from coming undone
