A little Rifle Relaxation, RWS style!

Rifle relaxation
I was craving something this evening, something to settle my focus. I had spent the day in the car, transporting our home-schooled kids to music lessons. I read, and sat in the truck making calls, making appointments, the sort of thing I do when I’m stuck in a vehicle. I love my job as chauffeur, don’t get me wrong! But after a day of driving, and sitting and waiting, I needed something. After a busy day, I re-discovered a source of perennial relaxation.
I pulled out my pellet-rifle. I found a canister of .177 cal. lead pellets. I found a thin piece of a plank, maybe an inch in width. I stuck it in the side of a stump. Then, backing up, I began to shoot.
My pellet-rifle is an RWS Model 34. It’s a fine quality German rifle, of the singl...

Fighting this aging business

I am attempting to fight this aging business. Sometimes I feel like I am winning - I actually have muscles right now from six months of going to the gym, I don't color my hair and have very few gray ones so far (and am happy to gloat about this fact), my wrinkles are minimal, and I don't think I look my age yet.

But then if you look at my medical file, you would think I was twice my age (which is a number that is none of your business). Before digital medical records came into play I had one of those thick files which could be used as a door stop. Now my doctors have to look through MANY appointment notes to find out what is going on. Sometimes I think they get lost in my medical file the way I sometimes get lost in Google.

I was reading an article about heart attacks waiting to happen ...

Last fall, I wrote a post featuring five new songs that I was obsessed with. I was planning on making it a recurring series but for some reason I never got around to it. I’m going to try it again.
For the past few weeks, since returning from Oregon, I’ve been working almost entirely out of Starbucks. The apartment next door is under construction and the hammering, sawing, and drilling was driving me crazy. But Starbucks is no urban oasis. So I have taken to listening to my “Florence + the Machine” Pandora station on a more consistent basis, after getting thoroughly sick of all the songs in my iTunes. I needed some new material! Whenever I hear a song that makes me groove just a little bit more than usual, I make a point to write it down and save it. Thanks to Spotif...

I knew that this was going to be a tough book to give away. I didn’t give it such a hot review, so I wasn’t really expecting anyone to enter to win the book. So the fact that there were three ladies who took the chance surprised me!
And the winner is…

Kim!
Congratulations! I’ll be in contact to get your mailing address. I can’t wait to hear what you think of the book!
As mentioned last week, I’m currently reading Incendiary, by Chris Cleave. Thus far, it is vastly superior to The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. But that’s not saying much. My book club meeting is this Sunday, so hopefully I can get the darn thing finished in time! The next book giveaway will probably be sometime in early September.

I hated this book.
I know a lot of people said that this book was challenging. That they didn’t like it. That it was confusing and complicated, made even worse by the constant intermingling of Spanish and English. The storyline was complicated enough without the language barrier. I get that the reason its there is for added “voice” for the narrator, whom I had trouble deciphering for the longest time (I’m still not sure I really ever knew who was talking and when).
But even when it frustrated me to no end, I didn’t give up. It is a Pulitzer Prize winning book, after all. Time magazine said it was “Astoundingly great.” Entertainment Weekly: “Terrific… high energy… it is a joy to read, and every bit as exhilarating to re-read.&#8221...

Variety can be the spice of intercourse
Recovery from alcoholism, addiction, gambling or co-dependency is common for people in their forth decade. Often sexuality in relationships has been absent or troubled. This may be true for straight, gays or lesbians.
Too many men and women in long-term relationships lament that “the thrill is gone” but often don’t understand why. Some blame themselves or their partners or tell themselves that sexual boredom is as inevitable a part of growing older as wrinkles and reading glasses. It doesn’t have to be that way. And here’s why: To coin a cliché, variety can be the spice of intercourse.
There are many kinds of sex play, but here let’s consider intercourse and different ways to do it — that is, experiment with positions. This doesn’t m...

Some months ago I wrote about Alexandra Pajak, a graduate student at the University of Georgia, who released an album of music based on the DNA of HIV. And now here is the Genetic Music Project, an open source genetic art project combining music and science where everyone is art and everyone can be an artist.
Since all genetic information can only come in the language of four nucleotides (A Adenosine C Cytosine G Guanine T Thymidine) it is fairly easily conveyed in musical form. Another way of thinking about it is that each and every one of us and all life on this planet is made of music.

Here you can listen to some samples. (Source: ScienceRoll)

A great post about how to get Beyond Bullet Points in Medical Education

Although the British Medical Association has recently warned against patient Facebook requests, here is a story about how Facebook saved a boy’s life

Slate has a dramatic story of how a mother’s Facebook network helped spot – rapidly – Kawasaki Disease, a rare auto-immune disease that the family’s doctors had initially missed. Her social network contains some medically knowledgeable people. (Do you have any docs, nurses, etc in your Facebook circle?) Note that friends’ availability is sometimes far greater than a doctor’s office.

I am not stupid.I am not stupid.I am not stupid.I am not stupid.I am not stupid.I am not stupid.I'll keep saying this. Why would anyone think I am stupid? Well perchance a few (like my doctors if I asked them but I am not going to) if I told them I was going white water rafting. Actually I am not rafting I am going floating which is very different.A friend of mine is having a significant (defined as ending in a 0) birthday next February and she wants to go white water rafting. But as she lives in New Hampshire, it is impossible in February. It would be more like sledding or ice skating or some weird morphed sport in between. So we are celebrating early, like now when there is water not ice in the river. Shortly I am leaving to drive 1 3/4 hours north to her house. We will then pile six of ...

Do you need a happiness boost — right now? If so, take a look at this menu of options and make your choices. Remember, the more you tackle, the bigger the boost you’ll receive.
When you’re feeling blue, it can be hard to muster up the physical and mental energy to do the things that make you happier. Plunking down in front of the TV or digging into a tub of ice cream seems like an easier fix.
However, research shows (and you know it’s true) that these aren’t the routes to feeling better. Try some choices below. The more you push yourself, the better you’ll feel; but if you can’t tackle a big task, just do something small.
Even a little step in the right direction will give you a lift.

According to my ground-breaking happiness formula, to be happy, you need to think about...

We travel to Hilton Head, SC, every spring for an ‘end of school-year’ vacation. It is a tradition that started several years ago; one which our family treasures. We plan months ahead, when we arrange lodging. Then, as the date draws closer we have to restrain ourselves from jumping up and down at odd, inappropriate times. The beach calls to us in an inexplicable way.
We live in a beautiful county, surrounded by mountains and lakes. It is, in itself, a worthy destination, perfect for biking, hiking, fishing and/or kayaking. But when May rolls around, our eyes turn to the east, and we long for the sand and sea. It is on...

A physician friend of mine recently bragged that, while driving along a rural South Carolina road, he had stopped, chased a timber-rattler into the bushes, located said rattler, then urinated on it.
‘I wanted to say I had peed on a rattlesnake!’ He beat a hasty retreat (and I imagine a hasty zip-up) when the snake rattled and struck at the air. Who can blame Mr. Snake?
You can take the redneck to medical school, but you’ll just get a redneck with a medical degree.
Which brings me to me. I have to work on our tool-shed/work-shop in the morning. The tool-shed/work-shop is, however, over-run with red-wasps. I counted no less than ten nests inside. These are irritable, contentious creatures with no love of humanity. If they were humans, they would be (more…)

Some mornings Theresa Daytner spends hours hiking. She also goes on trail rides, used to weight-lift twice a week with a trainer, reads nightly, watches her favorite TV show, enjoys massages, gets her hair done and planned a huge surprise birthday party for her husband, with people arriving from all over the country. And she sleeps at least seven hours a night.
Oh, and as journalist Laura Vanderkam writes in her book, 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think, Daytner is busier than most. She’s the owner of a seven-figure revenue company and the mother of six children, including twins! She also coaches soccer and regularly attends her kids’ games, is helping her 21-year-old plan a wedding and is expanding her business.
I barely have time to clean my room, do one load of laundry, coo...

My last trip to Portland before the wedding has come and gone, and now I’m heading down to San Diego for the Roche Diabetes Social Media Summit, followed by a crazy weekend at the American Diabetes Association’s Scientific Sessions. I’m so excited, but I’ll be rather preoccupied. So I’m introducing my first round of guest posts!
It’s the summer and while you proceed to spend some fun in the sun with your family and friends, it’s important that you properly protect your skin from overexposure—too much sun can lead not only to painful sunburns, but skin cancer and early skin aging such as unattractive wrinkles and sun spots as well.
But when it comes to selecting the best sunscreen for you and/or your family, sometimes it’s confusing. So confusing in fact, that the Food and Drug Administration has mandated new sun screen regulations so that consumers can better understand labels and get the protection they need.
Under the new regulations, which will take effect next summer, sunscreens will now have to pass a “broad spectrum” test before they can be placed on the market. This test will...

Podcast:

In an article appearing last week in the American Heart Journal, investigators concluded that if American doctors would prescribe for their patients with heart failure each of the six therapies which are most strongly recommended in current heart failure guidelines, 68,000 lives per year could be saved.
The following (for the interest of the reader, and for the convenience of any attorneys who may follow DrRich’s offerings), is an ordered list of these six proven, life-saving heart failure therapies, along with the number of American lives that could be saved each year if only American doctors would stop grossly under-utilizing them in violation of published guidelines:

aldosterone antagonist therapy – 21,407 lives
beta blockers – 12,922 lives

It was great to read the comments and tweets from people who have already read and loved the book! If you haven’t read any of Don Miller’s other books, I highly recommend Searching For God Knows What. It’s a really interesting take on a lot of those self-help books.

The kids and I have great discussions, watch movies, read, laugh and play. We usually sleep in my bedroom, like a bunch of large gerbils with blankets strewn everywhere. I like to think that, as dad’s go, I’m pretty fun. While we miss mama, we always have a good time when it’s papa time.

Can a Negative Emotion, Like Regret, Actually Make You Happier?

Assay: Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the important role of negative emotions in a happy life.
Some people seem to believe that the purpose of a happiness project would be to achieve a life in which you were 100% happy, 100% of the time. This isn’t realistic, and in any event, even if it were possible, it wouldn’t be desirable.
Negative emotions are a key part of rational thought and effective performance. Also, up to a point, they can be of great service to happiness. They’re loud, flashy signs that something isn’t right. Because they’re so unpleasant, they can sometimes prod us to take action when nothing else can. For instance, envy and deception have helped me to make useful changes in my life.

I just finished Neal Roese’s book, If Onl...

When people ask how Erik and I met, we often simply answer, “Online.” When pressed for more info, we confirm that we indeed met on a dating website. In our case, we met on OKCupid.
But that’s not really the whole story.
I was introduced to OKCupid via a couple of comments left on my post about how I was afraid I would never meet someone because of my diabetes (oh the irony…). One of those girls is actually one of my bridesmaids now, so just goes to show the power of this little blogging business.
I knew that I didn’t want to waste my time with people who didn’t fit my two core philosophical values: I’m a Christian and I’m a Democrat. You know, the family with 19 kids? The family who had their latest baby arrive three and a half months early? Surely you’ve seen them on the cover of People magazine.
I started watching the Duggar specials on TLC a few years ago, when I first moved to New Jersey. It was one of those things that I sort of watched in passing, since at the time they were doing these two hour long specials about the family. A couple years ago they started filming a regular series with them, and consequently had to change the name of their series almost every year because they kept having a new kid! 17 Kids and Counting became 18 Kids and Counting which became 19 Kids and Counting. So far, it’s still 19 Kids and Counting.
I’m not even sur...

Feeling as though you’re always running twenty minutes behind schedule is an unhappy feeling. Having to rush, forgetting things in your haste, dealing with annoyed people when you arrive… It’s no fun.
If you’re chronically late, what steps can you take to be more prompt? That depends on why you’re late. As my Eighth Commandment holds, the first step is to Identify the problem — then you can see more easily what you need to change.
There are many reasons you might be late, but some are particularly common. Are you late because…

1. You sleep too late?
If you’re so exhausted in the morning that you sleep until the last possible moment, it’s time to think about going to sleep earlier. Many people don’t get enough sleep, and sleep deprivation is a re...

How many times have you heard this on the radio: Base, this is Medic 3, and we’re 15 minutes from your facility with a 38-year-old white male with, uh, some chest pain, numbness all over, headache, and anxiety, as well as some bruises from a fall. He says his pain radiates from his earlobes to his nipples, and well, we’ll just give you more details on arrival, base. This is Medic 3 clear.
God love those paramedics. The truth is, if we doctors were on the truck ourselves, we still wouldn’t know what the diagnosis was. Frequently, when I discharge people from the emergency department, I still don’t know the diagnosis. Thank heavens for medical screening exams because that’s about the best I can do some nights.

The video lives! Our nursing staff helped me to film this years ago, and now I present it to you. Invincibility Syndrome concerns our patients who just can’t die, no matter how hard they try. And whose motto is: ‘I gotta get outta here!’
No actual drunks or patients were harmed in the making of this film. Kudos to Frank Mason, RN, the star of the production.

Prediction: Physicians Will Retire Earlier And Earlier Because Medicine Is No Longer Fun

I wonder if we’re in danger of stifling fun in medicine.
Certainly there are still fun things to do in medicine (ablating a pesky accessory pathway safely, for instance). But as I watch the newly-minted medical school graduates emerge from their long, sheltered educational cocoon, I wonder what their attrition rate will be from medicine once they see our new more-robotic form of health care community.
There is a social camaraderie in medicine when you train. Maybe it’s the “misery loves company” syndrome. In medical school you stick together through thick and thin because few others understand what you’re going through. You strive for the day when, collectively, you earn the designation of “doctor of medicine.” There’s a strength in numbers.

Wow! It’s been awhile since I’ve reviewed any movies.
Anagram Movies: A Lateral Thinking Exercise

"Critical Thinking" is the process by which we look for errors and find answers. Essentially, we use rules and judge their usage to solve an issue."Lateral Thinking" is a different process. In this type of thinking we find solutions by reworking the rules to use creativity to get answers. Research says that lateral thinkers are better problem solvers.Below you'll find movies that have their original titles, but the letters have been moved around to create new words. These anagram movies are not only funny, they're an example of lateral thinking. So play around with the title of a movie and give it a new title. But, please, keep 'em G rated!
8 Reasons Why Twitter Can Make You Happy

I’m a huge fan of Twitter, and I’ve tried to persuade several people to give it a try. (My greatest triumph: convincing my sister to use it. Seeing my sister in my Twitter feed — that makes me very happy.)
We’ve all seen how Twitter can play an unprecedented role in world events and in news communication. But on a very personal, routine level, there are several (other) ways in which Twitter can boost your happiness.
After all, is it just a coincidence that a blue bird is both the symbol for happiness and the symbol for Twitter? Probably yes, I know, but still, it’s a happy coincidence.
1. Twitter allows you to pursue your passion — even if only in your imagination.
A key to a happier life is to have fun – people who regularly have fun are twenty times ...

Did you know that it’s legal for doctors and researchers to use your cells for research without your consent?
That bit of information, and much more, is what I learned while reading the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot (who has just about the coolest last name ever).
The book chronicles the life of a black woman in the 1950s named Henrietta Lacks. She was diagnosed with a rare strain of cervical cancer that essentially ate her alive within a few months. During this time, doctors took bits of her cancer and studied it. And the shocking thing isn’t how quickly the cancer grew while Henrietta was alive, but how quickly it grew after she died.
Human cells back then didn’t typically live very long, so when scientists discovered Henrietta’s can...

It lowers blood pressure, boosts immunity and reduces pain, according to a mass of evidence that has been piling up in recent years.More Pleasure, Less PainSex reduces pain. An orgasm releases the hormones oxytocin and endorphins (the brain’s pain and anxiety reliever) so that pain declines. This means that the pain from arthritis, headaches and most other pain is reduced, according to a study published in the Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine.Full story at; Post-Menopause Sex Is Great in So Many Ways | Womens eNews.
2011 Happiness Challenge: For those of you following the 2011 Happiness Project Challenge, to make 2011 a happier year — and even if you haven’t officially signed up for the challenge — welcome! This month’s theme is Memories. Last week’s resolution was to Keep a one-sentence journal. Did you try that resolution? Did it boost your happiness?
This week’s resolution is to Keep a milestone journal.
You’ll notice that I accidentally switch back and forth in terminology — calling it a “milestone journal” and a “milestone book.” Which phrase has a better ring? Or can you think of a better term, altogether?

I know that a book about Christianity might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I was excited that six people entered to win Take This Bread, which I reviewed last week.
I took the names of the folks who entered and, using Random.org, picked the lucky winner who will receive my copy of the book!
And the winner is….
….
…
Julie!
Woohoo! Julie is not a blogger, but she is a good friend of mine from college. Congratulations, Julie! I already have your mailing address, so the book will be on its way to you shortly.
There will be another book giveaway sometime in early May.
Until next time, happy reading! (Source: Lemonade Life)

Here is another video in which Dr. James Porter again gives his daughter a manicure with the da Vinci surgical robot to demonstrate how this device gives surgeons greater surgical precision and dexterity over existing approaches.

Additionally these women had greater sexual desire and less recent masturbation.Better sex life was also associated with their first sexual orgasm being from intercourse rather than masturbation.Vaginal orgasms were not the result of partner masturbation or cunnilingus. It seems that straight sex, penis – vagina is still the best sex.
In February, I was in Boston to film a segment on Dr. Denise Faustman and speak at a networking event, but I had a few hours before my train departed, so I took the T over to Harvard. As previously mentioned, Boston is the only metro area on the East Coast that has Peet’s Coffee, so I regularly head over to Cambridge when I’m in town. After grabbing a Mocha Freddo, I decided to pop into the Harvard Coop bookstore and have a looksee.

Erik and I are pretty into movie reviews, both from critics and other viewers, so I have done a fairly good job at only watching movies that are worth my time. However, that isn’t always the case when you are visiting friends who have slightly different tastes in movies than you, or who decide to randomly pick something based off another friend’s so-called “recommendation.”
Just as a reminder, this is how my grading breaks down:
{A} must-sees
{B} nice to watch
{C} watch if you have nothing else to watch or they just weren’t my cup of tea
{F} please don’t waste your time
The Fighters: {A+}
I really enjoyed the fighter, and I honestly didn’t think I would. If you read my Oscar picks, you’ll know that absolutely loved Melissa Leo and Christian Bale...

My takeway: If you are stupid enough or ignorant enough to think there could be palm trees in Madison Wisconsin, you might still be watching Fox News. Or at least, that's likely the calculus over at Faux, so why put any effort into that Journalism stuff? It's not like the core audience cares...For the rest of humanity, let the mockery commence. Oh, as for CNN, and other "Liberal Media," - maybe it might be time to spend more time on the real issues of the day, and less time on Charlie Sheen. (Source: Graphictruth)

2 Simple Ways to Enhance Joy in Your Relationship

As a couple, when you’re dealing with the many demands of day-to-day life, it can feel like the fun has been zapped from your relationship. But contrary to popular opinion, you don’t necessarily have to do anything spectacular or pricey to bring the enjoyment back.
Below, Susan Heitler, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist in Denver who specializes in couples and author of The Power of Two: Secrets of a Strong & Loving Marriage, offers a simple 2-step plan to perk up your relationship.
1. Do a joy audit.
Ask yourself ”How much time are we devoting to doing things that we enjoy as a couple?”
Consider a further question. “How enjoyable are we making time together when the activity we need to do isn’t essentially fun?” For instance, you can easily turn “have-to” activit...

I am a big movie buff, so I try to see as many of the Oscar nominated movies as I can budget (movies are a bit pricey, if you haven’t noticed). Last year I managed to see nine out of 10 nominees, but this year I only wrangled in eight. I am seeing True Grit tonight, but it won’t give me enough time to post my picks. Oh dear. So while my opinion for Oscar picks isn’t complete due to my slightly uneven viewing, I think my picks still stand.
Let’s get to it…
Best Picture
Will Win: The Social Network
My Pick: Black Swan
I really liked The Social Network, so I’m not entirely surprised this is the leading contender. But I preferred Black Swan. It had better acting, it had an amazing plot with twists and turns, and it was visually gorgeous. The Social Network...

It may not be a new book anymore, and I actually read it a few months ago, but I would like to share my thoughts on Siddhartha Mukherjee’s The Emperor of All Maladies. Dr. Mukherjee subtitled his book, “A Biography of Cancer.” Much has been made in other reviews about the significance of this subtitle, and what it means to the approach he took to his topic – the history of cancer therapy.
I am fascinated by the history of medicine. When I teach residents about current sarcoma therapy, I always teach them the history of how we got to where we are. Dr. Mukherjee took this approach to its logical extreme, beginning with the first known record of the disease in ancient Egypt all the way to the present.

The main theme coursing its way through the book is the evo...

The Oscars are coming down the pike in just a few weeks, and last year I tried my best to watch all of the nominated films. This year I have done pretty good, despite just restarting my 101 things list, which includes watching 101 movies.
Out of the 10 Best Picture nominees, I have seen all of them except True Grit, 127 Hours and The Fighter. I’m hoping to remedy that before February 27th, but I’m not sure that will get done! I would also love to see Rabbit Hole and Blue Valentine, which has nominees for Best Actress (Nicole Kidman and Michelle Williams, respectively). There’s also Biutiful, which has a nominee for Best Actor. Other than that, I’m pretty much set with nominations.
In recent weeks, I’ve watched 3 Oscar-nominated movies and here are my reviews...

Here’s my column in Sunday’s Greenville News. I hope you enjoy it!
Kitchen provide a refuge when life get’s stormy
I have long loved kitchens. The kitchen of my childhood home was cozy, with a small bar where I ate my breakfast and where my sleepy brain came around in preparation for school, to the background of the radio built into the wall. My parents passed through hurriedly, kissing and feeding me as they entered their own worlds until evening.
I well remember the layout of my grandmother’s kitchens. Both were small, with dark wood and thin tables set against a window. From those kitchens emanated wonderful smells, laughter and love. In summer they could swelter, but in winter! In winter they were havens of warmth. Their ovens heated the room, and warm buttere...

Lets face it, during the winter, when as yet spring is not yet in sight (though the daffodils are beginning to show through) it is great to think of hot, sunny days. It is great to think of wonderful days out and of beautiful places and wonderful things.

Are you happy about your goals or are you working for goals that someone else set up for you? Do you have quota goals thrust upon you every month by your employer? How about a weight loss goal that was suggested by your health care provider? Goals like these can be arduous at best and usually have a negative motivational effect.
Years ago I worked for a sales company that would set sales quotas (goals) each month. If you reached your quota, they usually would put the carrot a little further out before you received a bonus the next month. Soon people realized that you didn’t want to exceed your quota by much or the goal would be put way out there. Have a really good month and you’ll never see a bonus again. Those kind of goals didn’t work.

While we may not have control of the goals t...

Stanford University bioengineer Ingmar Riedel-Kruse and his colleagues are developing “biotic games” where players control paramecia and other living microorganisms. The PacMan-like video games are the first in which a player’s actions influence the behavior of living microorganisms while the game is being played.
Here we propose the concept of ‘biotic games’, i.e., games that operate on biological processes. Utilizing a variety of biological processes we designed and tested a collection of games: ‘Enlightenment’, ‘Ciliaball’, ‘PAC-mecium’, ‘Microbash’, ‘Biotic Pinball’, ‘POND PONG’, ‘PolymerRace’, and ‘The Prisoner’s Smellemma’. We found that biotic games exhibit unique features compared to existing game modalities, such as utili...

Podcast:

While DrRich is a conservative American, and has made plain the difficulties he has with the Progressive program in general and with Progressive healthcare reform in particular, at times he is forced to admit that, on occasion, the Progressive way of looking at the world has certain merits. And as DrRich contemplates a question that has been bothering him lately, a question that no doubt plagues many American physicians who (unlike DrRich) are still toiling away in the trenches, he finds that this is one such occasion.
That question is: Just who are the people writing all those clinical guidelines – the “guidelines” physicians are now expected to follow in every particular in every case, on pain of massive fines, loss of career, and/or incarceration?

I first created this post in 2007, and apart from the home page, it has been the most viewed page on my blog (over 6,000 views). So here it is again, with a link to the latest OED update.
It’s fascinating to peruse the new words added to the OED. (Here is the latest update, December 2010.) Brand names often enter the language as generic terms, and I’ve listed a few of them below. (I wonder who they have in mind with the word “flip-flopper”. And what on earth is a cotylosaur? I thought “chicklet” meant a little piece of gum, but I was disappointed to discover that it means a small chick or girl.)

One of the things that makes a strong goal achievable is a sense of competition. This is especially true when it comes to fitness goals. While it’s really popular to challenge a friend or co-worker to a weight loss goal, there are many sanctioned events which also provide a competitive outlet.

In the list below you’ll find a list of popular events that are going on somewhere almost every weekend. From the popular 5k to the bucket list Marathon, you’re sure to find something on the list that you can schedule on your calendar and train for.
If you are just starting out, many of the 5k events are walk/run, so you can just walk 3.1 miles and have a great time. If you enjoy team sports, the Ragnar Relay provides a long distance race (200 miles) that 12 competitors run as a relay. You com...

I’m pretty sure that this is just a joke, but you can actually buy a DIY Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Kit on Amazon.
One of the comments there:
Unfortunately I managed to get this all screwed up. It should have been clearer that you don’t use all three kits. I ended up doing my stomach, liver and what I believe is a kidney although I don’t have enough medical experience to say for sure. It was very hard to use some of the tools while looking in the various mirrors I had set up. But, I got it done. At one point my wife came in, saw the mess and said I should have called a real doctor. Well, I showed her! I’m now happily eating, drinking and urinating much less. I look forward to trying the next release, the cardiac bypass kit. (Source: ScienceRoll)

One of my goals is to watch another 101 movies, and so far this year I’ve already watched three! All these movies are thanks to our new Apple TV we received for Christmas, which comes equipped with the ability to rent and watch videos on our TV from either the iTunes store or streaming Netflix. It may not be as economically efficient as getting an unlimited subscription from Netflix, but I’ve noticed that when we order movies from Netflix or Blockbuster, I tend to either lose interest in the movie that’s now arrived or we end up not finding the time to watch it right away.
Reverb 10 is an annual end-of-year project that helps readers reflect on the old year via a series of prompts. One of 2010′s prompts was “How did you cultivate a sense of wonder in your life this year?”
This question made me think about cultivating wonder in our lives all the time, from the old year into the new.
Wonder is a magical word, I think. And it’s a word that needs more exploration. We need to explore wonder more often, because as adults, many of us lose our sense of wonder in life. It gets buried under piles of bills, deadlines, responsibilities and housework.
Maybe you think you’re too old, too mature or too sensible to have a sense of wonder.
According to Dictionary.com, wonder means to admire, to be amazed, to be in awe, to marvel. It means something strange or s...

Cast: Mama 40, Daddy 42, Chastity 19, Jim Bob 17
Setting: The family is sitting around the table in their subsidized housing, discussing the future. Mama is microwaving dinner, as Daddy pops an Oxycontin, which Chastity eyes with interest. Her back has been hurting too.
Background: Jim Bob, ever the Black Sheep of the family, is on edge. He has news to tell the family, but he knows it won’t go well. Chastity knows about it and is being typical big sister. A typical big sister, that is, who refuses to work, loves to party and has seriously considered a career in government sponsored child-birth.
Mama: How’s your back pain, honey? Any better?
Daddy: Naw, I think them Oxycontin aren’t gonna help anymore. I need something...

I have long been a man who has found it difficult to sit still. My life has been one of near constant activity. Whether working, playing with the children, writing or just walking around the house and yard, I do not sit, I move.
Until this month. My wife’s cancer diagnosis stopped me in my tracks. Just over three weeks into our adventure, we have a diagnosis and plan, and have great hope for a cure. But I still find myself slower, less busy, less driven.
I have dismissed unnecessary activities and projects from my already busy life. I have resigned from some positions. I have done less, by far, than I ordinarily would have this time of year.
And I believe it has been one of the blessings that Jan said might be hidden in her diagnosis. She has always understood rest, s...

Phylo - A Human Computing Framework for Comparative Genomics is an interactive game that lets you contribute to science. I’ve been playing with that for a while.
The Problem:
Genetic sequences are difficult to understand and so to decipher their structure, we need to compare them to detect any similar regions they may have. Similar regions may indicate important elements of our genetic code. We have several genomes to align and we call this the multiple alignment problem.
The Game:
We abstract the multiple alignment problem to a game where the goal will be to align words made by pieces of different color instead of letters representing the genetic code (A,C,G,T). (Source: ScienceRoll)

Image via WikipediaCan Chocolate Lower Your Risk of Stroke?Eating chocolate may lower your risk of having a stroke, according to an analysis of available research that was released and presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting. Another study found that eating chocolate may lower the risk of death after suffering a stroke. The analysis involved reviewing three studies on chocolate and stroke.“More research is needed to determine whether chocolate truly lowers stroke risk, or whether healthier people are simply more likely to eat chocolate than others,” said study author Sarah Sahib.Chocolate is rich in antioxidants called flavonoids, which may have a protective effect against stroke. The first study found that 44,489 people who ate one serving of chocolate per week...

I've discovered reading again. Or maybe what I've done is made a conscious decision to set aside time to read. Some books I've recently read have nothing to do with cancer, like Cloud Atlas. Then there's The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

Rebecca Skloot did a marvelous job telling the story of Henrietta Lacks, a woman from Baltimore whose cervical cancer cells became the very first immortalized cell line. I think this book is a "must read" for anyone engaged in cancer research, if for no other reason than it reminds us that every cell line we work with was once a tumor growing in an individual... a person who had a family and friends, a person who suffered and probably died of cancer. Each of these people has a story, and knowing that story can inspire us...

The “Good-Enough Sex” model for couple sexual satisfaction “Then we have the voices who cry for sex and more sex; who bewail the institution of marriage; who think that most of the troubles of the race are traceable to sex causes. They think we do not have enough of it, or that it isn’t the right kind. They see its significance everywhere. One school would allow man or woman no flavour for their fare and the other would have us all on a straight pepper diet. We want to stay out of this controversy. We do not want to be the arbiter of anyone’s sex conduct. We all have sex problems. We’d hardly be human if we didn’t.
Let the gift shopping, wrapping and giving begin: the holidays are here! Soon everyone will be walking around, humming holiday tunes and acting jollier than usual. However, underneath it all, everyone will be STRESSING!
The holidays are notorious for adding a large amount of stress during an already stressful time. When can you shop for gifts when you have to finish a report before New Years? What do you buy your parents? Can you afford an expensive gift for your spouse in this economy?
Stress. Stress. Stress.

The pages are meant to represent the elegance and culture of the modern South. The porches, the verandas as clean and perfect as the day the builders and painters shook hands, collected checks and walked away.

There I was after a long day at work, downing a Red Bull in the hope of keeping my eyes open while my mind ran through what tasks I had achieved today and what needed to be done the following day.

For the first couple of years after the unofficial creation of the D.O.C., I hosted an online award program. After awhile, it became apparent that it was a little too competitive and there were simply too many hurt feelings when the categories were very “high and mighty” like Best Blog. Which is why I’m thrilled that Gina Capone has stepped up to the plate to host a new and improved award program filled with fun and quirky categories like “Blogger You’d Share a Drink With” and “Blogger with the Best Hair” (I’m betting Scott Johnson will win that one – no, just me?).
Nominations for the categories are open right now until December 8, so head on over to the DOC Award website to find out more and get a full list of all the categories!

I do wonder how many pathogens have streets named after them now.
It would be too cruel to letter-writers and the frogs to the name a Sierra Mtn road Batrachochytrium Way or for a farmer to have to live on Puccinia Ave alongside a wheat field in North Dakota…

If there is one thing you should know about me, it’s that I am a huge Trekkie. I started watching Star Trek: The Next Generation when I was about seven years old, and I have been a lifelong fan ever since. Since my introduction to Star Trek was Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-D, I have had a special attachment to those actors. Earlier this summer, I found out that Sir Patrick Stewart (he was knighted last summer) was going to be starring on Broadway in David Mamet’s A Life in the Theater. I begged Erik to buy tickets. He was a little hesitant because of the price of the tickets, but in the end, he surprised me with tickets as a birthday present!
The play wasn’t starting until October, and the tickets were for last night’s performance, so I had quite a ...

Is this goodbye?
Here’s my column in today’s Greenville News. It isn’t posted online yet.

Jack, Jack, where have you gone?
I’ve been in a state of mourning lately. Friends come up to me, gently touch me on the arm, and say, ‘I’m sorry, I heard; are you OK?’ I nod, courageous, and tell them I’m making it through. But I can tell you, it hasn’t been easy.
When your favorite fast-food establishment closes, brother, it’s hard. You see, since it first opened, I was a fan of Jack-in-the-Box. The one in Seneca was, for a shift-work kind of doctor like me, a thing of sheer beauty.
It was open 24 hours from the beginning. At all hours of the day or night, you could have breakfast biscuits, tacos, egg-rolls, burgers, onion-rings or salads...

Since moving to our new apartment, I’ve been working almost exclusively in my new home office. A home office that also doubles as our dining room and our living room. So it’s not much of a home office, actually. Because I am home alone with only the sounds of the road to listen to, I’ve started listening to this Portland radio station that I was addicted to when I lived there. It’s called KINK and it plays mostly rock-slash-contemporary-slash-pop-slash-oldies and it’s pretty much awesome all the time. Here are some songs that have been playing this week that I absolutely love.

Google came up with something innovative again! They asked users to create videos in which they demonstrate the real power of Google apps and tools. And they do this through a competition.
My favourite video is the one in which two US girls use Google Translate to order Indian food.

I’m wondering how people would show the real power of Webicina.com.

I've spent quite a bit of time on the quest for a library ebook reader for the Apple iPad. I've sifted through that great spam link & outdated forum post directory known as Google, and I've come to the sad conclusion that there aren't any iPad ereaders that can handle Adobe DRMed library books. The closest nibble for iOS was in February 2009 when Stanza announced upcoming Adobe DRM support. Even if Stanza hadn't been bought out by Amazon a few months later, causing their forthcoming Adobe DRM support to be abandoned faster than a pair of out of style pants, there was no guarantee that Stanza's reader would have supported library books.

The problem is that the most popular library ebook lending system is Overdrive. They deliver a double-fisted DRM smack down by wrapping Adobe DRM in a se...

I found this hilarious South Park video about Facebook Friends on Jud’s Education Emporium. It was used to illustrate that “friending” doesn’t mean a lot, although in this video it does mean an awful lot to some real-life friends of Stan. In real life this happens too. See Paul’s “outpouring” on Facebook…..
Mira Kirshenbaum is one of my favorite relationship experts. She has written two books that I often recommend to my clients: Too Good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay and Women and Love. They are easy reads, full of compassion and insight.
As I contemplated writing a post about how couples become vulnerable to affairs I read this interview of Ms. Kirshenbaum where she really says it all: Is Your Partner Cheating on You? on Mira’s blog. Here she talks not only about real risk factors, she also rules out signs that could be misread. In other words, not all suspicious signs point to an affair.
“…it’s not so much about warning signs. It’s about risk factors. And if you know what the risk factors are, you can do something about them and have a better relationship to boot…&#...

I was supposed to pick up the Chinese medicine for the Goblin's seizures, but they had closed early. Instead of rushing home, I let myself become distracted with my new toy camera app, Plastic Bullet. There was a canal with embankments, a rusty fence, and run down elements galore. I got busy. Then suddenly I noticed two pigeons flapping around. They came to rest on a nearby billboard and I thought, "Wouldn't that make for a great shot if I could catch them in flight?"

So I waited with camera poised.

And I waited.

And I waited.

The previously energetic pigeons had apparently tuckered themselves out. Even with an approaching storm, I waited patiently, but they moved not an inch, never mind performed for me. Eventually, I became bored and suddenly remembered I had other things to do. F...

More holiday reading to ponder… One of the fascinating developments in psychology over the past 50 years is the ongoing study into what constitutes psychological health. It’s been known by many names – ego-resilience, executive control and self-regulation – but the work on these areas hasn’t been pulled together into a coherent whole until recently. The authors of this paper suggest that this is partly because of the nature of defining this particular beast – what is health after all? Their argument, and one that I find rather appealing, is that a main feature of health is to be able to apply the right kind of response to the many different situations in which we find ourselves. In other words, flexibility.
Occupational therapists in particular will rejo...

A few months ago, Alexandra Pajak, a graduate student at the University of Georgia contacted me about an album of music based on the DNA of the HIV virus she was about to release. I feel lucky that the album is just on its way to my CD player right now. You can buy the album on Amazon (release date: 26, October). Note that some of the proceeds will go to the Emory Vaccine Center, which conducts research for an HIV vaccine. If you wonder how it was made, here is the explanation:
Sounds of HIV is a musical translation of the genetic code of HIV, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. Every segment of the virus is assigned music pitches that correspond to the segment’s scientific properties. In this way, the sounds reflect the true nature of the virus. When listening from beginning to en...

Doubt: What a waste of Academy Award nominations. All hype, no follow through.

The Reader: Kate Winslet is definitely an Oscar-winning actress, but not for this role. Plot and characters were too stale and dull for my taste.

Death at a Funeral: Before it was a cheap American remake, it was a classically British comedy. A total must-watch, and it’s as crazy as it sounds.

Milk: I knew nothing about Harvey Milk before watching this movie, but it inspires me to be more politically active. A l...

The alternating rise and fall of the bellows, steady airflow of a hand-cranked blower and sudden metallic clangs do not mean that this rural Emergency Medicine physician is using steam-engine technology to ventilate a critical patient.
Dr. Edwin Leap is just having fun with his children, in a way that only a small-town practice could provide. In his free time away from a full-time position at Oconee Medical Center in Seneca, South Carolina, Leap enjoys blacksmithing in the forge he has erected on his 60-acre farm. He lives on the farm with his wife Jan and four children and a number of...

Written on our dry-erase board at the nurses’ station is the following tragic message:
‘OUT OF INAPSINE.’
For those of you unfamiliar with this wonder-drug, its actual name is Droperidol. It has been used over the years for pre-sedation, for nausea, for migraines and for behavior control of agitated, violent and/or psychotic individuals.
A few years ago, it received a dreaded ‘Black Box Warning,’ from the FDA for QT prolongation. That is, in lay terms, it could cause dangerous or fatal cardiac rhythms.
This was news to those of us who grew up as physicians, administering the stuff in liter doses. (Oddly, it coincided with the release of a competing nausea medication, Zofran, which was ...

Bipolar disorder ‘not to blame for violent behaviour
People with a severe mental illness are no more likely to be violent than anyone else – unless they abuse drugs or alcohol, a study has suggested.
The relationship between bipolar disorder and violence largely came down to substance abuse, researchers said..

Are you living in a sexually satisfied city, like Columbus, Ohio? Or, like residents of Manchester, New Hampshire, are you more likely sexually unsatisfied?
A new survey from Men’s Health magazine released a new list this week of “sexually satisfied” cities, as well as those who fare not so well. They looked at a number of statistical factors to arrive at these admittedly arbitrary distinctions — birth rates (I suppose under the assumption that those cities with higher birth rates have a higher rate of sexual activity as well), sales of sex toys and condoms, and rates of sexually transmitted diseases. One could certainly argue with these choices.

When I was a very young boy there was an ad on TV that captured my fancy. The product was for a now defunct breath mint called "Dynamints". In the ad, beautiful people would pop a Dynamint in their mouth, then the world would shake with the very flavor of it. I recall a pyramid of cheerleaders and a guy at the bottom foolishly sampling the geological potency of the mint and causing the pyramid to crumble. This was very convincing to my five or six year old mind.

One day I was spending time with my grandmother and I talked her into buying me the magical mints that "shake up your mouth". I remember sitting in the back of her olive green Dodge Charger, opening the coveted package, and carefully tasting one of these amazing objects.

Nothing happened.

As I sat there disillusioned, I recall s...

Here’s another round of some 140 character movie reviews. If you’re looking for something to watch this week, take a gander. Maybe you’ll see something you want to watch!
The September Issue: I’m not much of a fashionista, but this gave me a new appreciation for it as an art. And Grace is so much cooler than Anna.
Away We Go: I really identified with the concept of trying to find a “home” – not just a place to live. A bit kooky, but I liked it.
The Informant: Absolutely hilarious and bonkers. Matt Damon will keep you on your toes! Supporting cast is fun, makes for a great ride (and it’s true!)
Coraline: A children’s movies, supposedly, but it scared the bejeezus out of me at points. Not your typical animated style, either.

I love films. Give me some sepia tinted, noirish thriller, done in mime, with French subtitles and I am a happy Mental Nurse. Sometimes I drop my standards and watch things that are actually fun. Sometimes I watch things because I can not heave my carcass off the sofa to reach the remote control and change the channel.
It is a hard life.
Sometimes I even watch something that either has mental health or nursing as a subject. I could do a post on that how original.
