Here is a new twist on how respected academic institutions have gained from less than respectable donors. As reported by the Palm Beach (FL) Post, John David Mazzuto and a colleague stole more than $60 million from his former company and its investors, New York prosecutors said Tuesday afternoon. ... the Manhattan District Attorney said today that, while he was in bankruptcy from 2002 to 2009, he siphoned more than $15 million from Industrial Enterprises, and used the money to support 'a lavish lifestyle using millions of company dollars for homes, travel, and personal expenses.'They included Mazzuto's 7,715-square foot house at 11503 Green Bayberry Drive. Palm Beach County records show a corporation managed by him bought it for $2.6 million in 2007. No mortgage was recorded, suggest...

I am a very passionate runner myself so it gives me great pleasure to present to you a unique fund raising event. By running this year’s New York City Half-Marathon on August 16th you could also help Fresh Air Fund for children. Since 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences in the country to more than 1.7 million New York City children from disadvantaged communities. During the last year’s run they raised more than $125,000 which went directly to their free programs.
You can help out either by running for Fresh Air Fund-Racers team or hosting children in your home. Find out more at The Fresh Air Fund web site and go out and do something good for yourself and others.

Click to donateIt is time once again for Keith's Brain Trust to prepare for the ACS Relay For Life of Hudson. As in the past, I sent out emails to ask for donations for this cause. Of course, in years past, I was doing this task in tandem with letters for those among my family and friends who do not have email access either by choice or necessity. And I would be starting months earlier. This year, however, I was unable to get the drive to do so. And now, the Relay is less than a month away. And activities this past week have given me the kick in the butt I needed to get on the ball. But that wasn't enough time to send out letters via the post. So that's where any blog readers come in. Now I realize that I/we do not update this blog enough to have regular readers any more. So if you've simp...

Caring for a medically fragile child is one of the most difficult things a parent can do. Not only do you have to do all of the parenting day to day work. Like feeding and day to day care, you quickly have to lean many roles that most parents would not even know excited.
Within days of your child being born you start to get training for all of the roles you will quickly develop.
As well as being a parent, you become an occupational therapist, a feeding therapist, among many other roles.
Most children, who have a genetic disorder, or are medically fragile in some way, and some families may be lucky to have a support network within their own community, Doctors and care workers who have a knowledge of the medical condition and all of the of the health implications that will effect the chi...

January 19th 2009 commemorated Martin Luther King, Jr., which has become a day of civic voluntarism here in the US. Barack Obama, the day before becoming President, spent it volunteering, along with his family. He also asked that we extend it beyond just this day. I thought about it a bit, and wondered how to apply the idea to our efforts. Both the International Costello Syndrome Support Group (ICSSG) in the UK, and the Costello Syndrome Family Network (CSFN) in the US rely solely on voluntarism.
I recognize that caring for a medically fragile, developmentally delayed/disabled child is like walking along the top of a tall wall. It doesn’t take much to cause us to stumble, so easy to fall off. Anything that would cause a family caring for a typical child to stumble (a car breaks dow...

Contribute your Alzheimer’s related art for a zine to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research. Katelyn at Stamping Mad is initiating this project, Giving Back - A Call for Alzheimer’s Related Art, at her blog.
I was thinking to do something a bit different [from last year]. I want to create a zine (a type of magazine) called “A Portrait of Alzheimer’s” and am looking for people to make art that fits this theme to include in the zine. Since you can just take a good, high resolution photo for me instead of sending in original art, it should be less costly for everyone to do. Of course, all net proceeds from zine sales will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Foundation at Alz.org.

After I've moved in to the new place and become some organization guru or something. As for now? I'll probably not be very organized. For a while. But hopefully I'll still manage to bring a bit of change in for the ACS. Along with my partner, HalfBrainBoy. Because we do make a pretty good team.
Climber Alan Arnette has a new project - to climb Mt Everest one more time. This will be his third attempt to reach the summit. But this time, the summit is not his only goal. He also aims to raise $100,000 for Alzheimer’s research.
Why?
Because like so many other people around the world, Alan has a personal connection with Alzheimer’s disease - his 81 year old mother has it.
Alan writes on his site ‘I am finalising the details of how to raise the money and to make sure it is spent in the most efficient, effective, and honest manner possible. My goal is to identify a promising research project or Doctor and target the funding in a specific and measurable manner…’

Alzheimer’s Association has launched the Champions Campaign in an effort to make the issues of Alzheimer’s disease more visible. Their goal is to enlist 5 million champions to take action in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Celebrities such as David Hyde Pearce, Olympia Dukakis, and Rikki Lake have already enrolled. Why don’t you? It’s as simple as signing up here…
The campaign is three fold:
It focuses on getting people to voice their opinion by writing to Congress and telling their story.
It asks for people to open their eyes to what Alzheimer’s disease.
And it invites people to be active in moving toward a cure by donating time and money. (Source: Alzheimer's Notes)

The Alzheimer’s Association’s largest fundraising event is the Memory Walk. Since 1989 when the Memory Walk was launched, it has raised over $200 million to help those battling Alzheimer’s Disease.
People choose to walk for different reasons. But the three main ones appear to be to honor someone you love, to raise public awareness, and to help make a difference for people with Alzheimer’s Disease by raising money.
You can walk as an individual or set up a corporate or family team. If you don’t want to walk or prehaps, cannot walk, there are other ways of participating. There is always a need for volunteers to help plan and coordinate the event.
The walks take place throughout the year in more than 600 communities across the United States. You can find informat...
