Pardon me for the humourless dissecting of my neuroses Have I mentioned before having used, for many years, the esteem-busting mantra “If anyone deserves AIDS, I do!” (Looking at it now I feel like each word should be italicized for emphasis, rather than just one or two.) What a message: If anyone deserves AIDS, I [...] (Source: My journey with AIDS)

I have an irritating (according to some) tendency to play “devil’s advocate” in discussions about many things. I think this dates back to my junior year in high school when I learned the pleasures of debate in a philosophy class (gotta love the Jesuits!). More than anything, it was the admonition that some things were beyond debate - for example, abortion (remember: Jesuits) - that got me hooked. Nothing, as far as I’m concerned, is beyond discussion or debate.
Which has led me into a life of “comparison.” Comparative religion. Comparative politics. (It was, in fact, in a comparative politics class that I met my wife of 21 years.)
Along similar lines to my last entry about wild west cowboys to be blamed for legalism in 20th century evangelical/fundamentalist churches, one of my favourite bloggers Fred the slacktivist weighs in with his take on C.S. Lewis’ book Prince Caspian :
I haven’t seen Prince Caspian yet, but since it was the “No. 1 Movie” this weekend, let’s revisit what that wonderful little book was about:
Prince Caspian is about beer.
He then goes on to quote Lewis from Mere Christianity discussing this very issue of legalism, especially relating to alcohol. And Lewis, as you may or may not know, enjoyed his beer.
You know the old taboos that used to abound in Christian circles (and still do in some ultra-conservative or fundamentalist groups) - like no playing cards, no dancing, no alcohol at all, no going to movies etc? Well according to the following quote from a book I’m currently reading, this sort of thing might be directly attributable to the excesses of the American Wild West!
So screw it, I’ll kick off the weekly ~music video meets poetics~ feature a day late and edit short, and that’ll just have to do, sitting ’round wondering will a matchbox hold my clothes…

I wrote this today, in a Yahoo! group I belong to, in response to kudos for being “open” and “honest”.
I have had a lot of experience being “open” about myself - different issues than my bipolar diagnosis in the last nine months or so (what a relief THAT was!) but issues that, in groups [...] (Source: My journey with AIDS)

With the chorus “Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead!” racing through my mind I read today’s Canadian Press report in the Star that Toronto-area (Scarborough Southwest) Liberal Tom Wappel would not be seeking re-election. This follows his recent ranks-breaking vote, with the Conservatives, on some of the Draconian measures in anti-terrorism legislation.
