Recently I got an iPad 2, which is a wonderful thing in so many ways. At some point soon I’ll list a few of the useful apps I’ve discovered thus far, but for the time being I just want to discuss how useful I’ve found the iPad as a worship musician. Actually all of the stuff I’m talking about isn’t necessarily specific to the church music setting – you could use it just as well in any live music environment.
One of the first things I thought the iPad would be useful for is to display my chord charts. I have a big library of chord/lyric charts in PDF and Word format and so I thought it would be great to display them on my iPad instead of having to print them out each week, with just a simple swipe between songs.
I’ve found an app which does not only...

In their exceptional, informative book The Healthy Home: Simple Truths of Protect Your Family From Hidden Household Dangers, son and father team Myron Wentz and Dave Wentz tackle the topic of toxins from room to room, starting with the bedroom and ending with the garage and yard. “Every second of every day, we face an onslaught of unnecessary dangers—toxic chemicals, negative energies, unforeseen side effects, and more—in our modern world,” writes Dave, the younger Wentz.
Myron, his father, who holds a Ph.D. in microbiology with a specialty in immunology from the University of Utah, throws in the statistics: “A new chemical substance is discovered every nine seconds during the workday. Chemists discovered the eighteenth millionth chemical substance known to science on June 15...

So you go inside a building and your Global Positioning System (GPS) smart phone stops working. What to do? Mini-gyroscopes to keep track of your movements. But the mini-gyros drift. So how to reduce the error? Radars in your shoes could keep track of when you are moving and when sitting still to eliminate much of the drift. However, IMUs have traditionally faced a significant challenge. Any minor errors an IMU makes in measuring acceleration lead to errors in estimating velocity and position – and those errors accumulate over time. For example, if an IMU thinks you are moving – even as little as 0.1 meters per second – when you are actually standing still, within three minutes the IMU... (Source: FuturePundit)

I caught the movie Love and Other Drugs over the weekend. Did you see it? I have to say it surprised me by it’s uncharacteristically non-romantic romantic comedy. Although it was funny and about love, it broached the topic in such a poignant and refreshing way, I was taken aback.
There was something Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Jamie said towards the end of the movie that really stuck with me. He said that in a parallel universe the two of them would be healthy and perfect and would worry about superficial things like feeling guilty about hiring someone to clean their house. (Not to spoil it for you if you haven’t seen the movie, but it is mentioned in the movie’s description that one of them is ill.) Yet, he said he would rather be the couple they were now.
As I get...

From cell phones and Crackberries to iPhones and laptops, technology has become such an intricate part of our daily lives, we sure wouldn’t know how to live without it.
However, as convenient as these devices make our lives, a new book argues they may take a not-well-known toll on our health. In “Zapped: Why Your Cell Phone Shouldn’t Be Your Alarm Clock and 1,268 Ways To Outsmart The Hazards of Electronic Pollution,” Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman, author of the New York Times Bestseller “Fat Flush Plan,” as well as 30 other books on health and nutrition, explores the various ways our bodies are affected by “electronic pollution” — and how to protect ourselves from these elec...

We were interested in this post from Linda Melone at AOL Health, and thought you might be also.

Is your laptop ruining your health? Experts say it’s a real issue. Laptop sales surpassed desktop sales for the first time in 2008 and some colleges even require them. Text-neck, Laptop-itis and infertility top the list of potential hazards as more people use them and for longer periods of time.

Posture Pitfalls

Before laptops, students studied bent over a book instead of a computer, notes Dean L. Fishman, founder of the Text Neck Institute in Florida. But the postural issues seen today were virtually unheard of years ago. The difference is the time spent in the bent-over position, Fishman said.
“Today, kids ages 8 to 18 years old spend an average of seven and a...

Put down your iPod and go to the park, if you want to avoid brain fatigue. Although there are some serious benefits to getting online (like being able to read Blisstree), researchers claim that our constant use of technology and electronics is causing brain-drain, and impairing our ability to learn, as well.
As we constantly fill our moments of “down time” and rest with games, videos, articles, and podcasts, we’re not giving our brains a genuine chance to stop, absorb, and process information and experiences that we collect throughout the day. So, according to researchers, even if you think you’re relaxing by watching a video clip on your iPhone while you wait for a bus, or listening to music while you’re exercising at the gym, the constant flow of information...

Comedian Mark Malkoff is taking a five-day-long vacation from technology – in his bathtub (which we think is a wise idea, because bathtubs and electronics don’t mix). He thinks he needs a break from all things electronic, so he’s got a list of things to do while he detoxes. It includes reading Gravity’s Rainbow, memorizing all of the U.S. presidents in order, and learning how to sew on a button — among other things. Thankfully, the tub isn’t filled with water, so Malkoff doesn’t need to worry about pruning during his vacation.
If you took a break from your cell phone, TV, and computer, what the hell would you do instead?

A man who played a video game for 9 hours a day is suing the game’s producer because he claims he’s suffering withdrawal. Apparently, the man says he became “psychologically dependent and addicted” to Lineage II, a game made by manufacturer NCsoft.
Addicted to video games? Hmm. If someone dedicates nine hours of their day to playing a video game, we think they deserve to suffer a little. So sue us.

If you haven’t heard of Henry David Thoreau, you might be forgiven for thinking he has nothing to teach us from his time on this planet 150 years ago. I think that perhaps the 5 scientists who thought they might learn something about the brain and attention by taking a little camping trip could have figured this out by revisiting Thoreau’s writings:
I come home to my solitary woodland walk as the homesick go home. I thus dispose of the superfluous and see things as they are, grand and beautiful. I have told many that I walk every day about half the daylight, but I think they do not believe it. I wish to get the Concord, the Massachusetts, the America, out of my head and be sane a part of every day.

Worldreader is a nonprofit aimed at increasing literacy in developing countries by distributing Kindles. It was co-founded by David Risher, the ex-vice president of Amazon.com, the company that donated Kindles to begin testing in Ghana earlier this year. The e-reader is becoming more widespread in that part of the world, and it could have a big impact on the availability of literature there.

Tony and Judie Ellis, who run a robotics company called Conceptioneering out of their South-East England home, built themselves a child. Little Aimec is a lot like a human kid – it can make jokes, laugh, and follow its “parents” around the house.
So, what’s the verdict? Is this robo-child cute or creepy?

Smart phones have made getting directions to unfamiliar destinations really easy. But some people are annoyed by the fact that you have to stare at your cell phone screen to know where to go. We don’t mind looking at our screen, as long as we don’t look clueless. That’s what we hate: Looking like we don’t know where we’re going.
Well, we might not have to worry about looking like lost tourists for much longer. The Nakajima Lab at the University of Electro-Communications in Toyko has created a pair of glasses that tells you where to go by flashing little lights in your peripheral vision. As you can tell in the video, it looks weird to have flashing lights in your glasses, but it’s fairly subtle. And maybe from far away people will think our eyes are just ...

Verizon Opens Green Store: An Empty Gesture?

photo: Thinkstock
Verizon Wireless announced plans to open a state-of-the-art green store in the Bank of America Tower in New York City. The Bank of America Tower is certified from the Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — so, basically, it’s super green. But cell phones are definitely not.
A Huffington Post article suggests that it would be more beneficial to the environment for Verizon to have a “Turn Off Your Cellphone Hour” rather than open up one eco-friendly storefront. What do you think? Is it hypocritical for a company that sells a not-eco friendly product to operate out of a green store? Or does every little green effort count?

While watching New York Times correspondent Amy Harmon try with some difficulty to have a conversation with a robot woman, it becomes increasingly obvious that robots will not replace humans for emotional fulfillment anytime soon. The only similarity between Bina48 and your best friend is that they both sometimes say, “Um.” But Bina48 makes awkward jokes about scheming to take over the world.

Best Buy’s executives have been scratching their heads for decades, wondering why women don’t shop at their stores. But they haven’t actually done anything about it until recently, when a bright, enterprising, and might we add, female, executive came up with the idea to actually ask women customers what they wanted. Male executives have dismissed the idea as a silly, “Oprah Book Club” even after sales among women began to increase. (Uh, yeah, because Oprah’s Book Club is not successful. At all.)
Women in focus groups across the country told Best Buy that cavernous, gray warehouse style stores weren’t welcoming or comfortable, as well as other ideas about the chain. Best Buy is implementing some suggested changes, and ...

Is technology taking over our lives? Or do some people just make choices with regard to choosing technology over interacting with their family and friends?
I don’t believe that “technology” can take over our lives — unless we choose to let it.
So it was with interest that I saw a lengthy article written over at the New York Times, “Hooked on Gadgets, and Paying a Mental Price.” I was going to comment earlier on the article, thinking it was going to be this thoughtful, in-depth look at how technology is impacting people’s lives for both the positive and negative.
Instead, it appeared to be some sort of story revolving around a guy called Kord Campbell and his family. Kord apparently has a hard time prioritizing things in his life — to the poin...

Can The Chin Be Slimmed?

Here’s a gimmick “As Seen On TV,” on which you should save your hard-earned money.
The neckline slimmer claims to reverse the effects of aging without cosmetic surgery. Simply hold this gadget to the chin area and it will exercise your neck muscles to reduce those jowls or sagging fat under your chin. Just two minutes a day should do the trick, according to the commercial.
Unfortunately the effects of aging and loose skin cannot be reversed by jiggling the head or pressing the fat upward. Weight loss can slim the face, but sagging jowls probably needs cosmetic surgery.
Personally, I prefer candlelight and light dimmers.

Just read on Rodney’s blog that the Amazon Kindle book reader is finally being released in Australia, which is good news. We tend to lag behind the US in so many bits of cool technology so it’s always nice when we finally catch up.
It seems Amazon have reached an agreement with one of our mobile networks here to provide 3G coverage without needing a contract – more details in this story from CNET.
While this is good news I won’t be rushing to buy one – partly because I can’t afford it at the moment, partly because I’m not convinced the eBook reader idea has reached maturity, and mostly because I still love reading and accumulating proper physical books! Also if I am going to read a book in electronic format I’d rather do it on a multi-purpo...

Interesting piece on Slate here about ebooks and the Amazon kindle, a devide we are yet to see here in Australia but which has started to take the US reading market by storm. For the first time, after several unsuccussful forays by companies like Sony, ebooks are starting to get some mass traction.
I can see the advantages of eBooks, especially from the point of view of not having to carry books around, copying and pasting notes, purchasing books instantaneously etc. Especially for students the benefits are potentially huge.
However I’m still sold on the idea of “one-device-to-rule-them-all” – phone, book reader, media player, computer, camera, video recorder etc If only we had such a device so we don’t have to carry all these other things around… the iP...

It’s a week now since I got my iPhone 3GS so a good time to post some of my thoughts about it. I’ll post more on some of the apps I’m using in the coming days/weeks.

Firstly let me say that the iPhone is a revolution. I’m been a long time PDA/Smart phone user (moving form Palm PDAs to the brilliant Treo which my wife still loves through to a couple of fairly good Windows Mobile HTC phones) but I’m a fairly late adopter to the iPhone. Part of the reason for this was being locked into my old contract and the other part was feeling that the iPhone was far from being mature, lacking in basic phone functionality like MMS, Video, Cut and Paste etc. The recent release of the iPhone 3 software and the new 3GS hardware dealt with most of those reservations.

Ok I’ll admit it upfront – I have one. And yes, it’s fun. But as I’ve watched a wave of Wii-fanaticism come over the Hospital campus where I work, I will also admit to some reservations about it. Clever marketing or marvellous motivation tool?
Rod Henderson, self-acknowledged ‘Board Certified Orthopedic Super-Freak’ and physiotherapist put this fabulous post up on his blog today, and I simply had to link to it, and the YouTube video he referred to. Ask yourself: is the Wii anything more than yet another form of activity? I didn’t know that a very expensive mobile phone which cost a fortune is actually real. I can already live a lifetime with that amount of money. Seriously.
The phone I was referring to was the Vertu Cell Phone that probably only rich brat like Paris Hilton can afford. What’s so special about this phone?
The accessories and phone parts are made of pure jewels. It has a ruby keypad bearings, a blemish-free sapphire and stainless steel alloy housing, a deeper bass speakers, and 18 carat gold furnishings on its metal casing.
A returning question from participants in workshops and courses about using RSS & Personal Start Pages & Netvibes, is "How can I track the use of the Public Page (Universe) by Netvibes?) And what about the use of the Search & News widgets?"

I am still looking for a good answer for the widgets tracking, because Netvibes is not offering tracking of individual widgets at this time, and I haven't heard any talk about it. So for this, we can only see the downloads from the eco.netvibes.com or widgetbox.com sites. (Google is offering -for their own gadgets- a manual for gadget tracking. Maybe some geek can/did try and mash this up to make it work for other widgets ...?)

I DID find a way to keep track of the use of the Public pages!

When you consider having a library presence in social networks, and got Facebook on your list for some reason (for instance, because ..% of your users have a Facebook account) think carefully before you actually create anything.
The Group function is used very often, but actually does not offer that much functionality.
Many applications, (FB or Third-party) can not be added to Group-pages.
My advice is to support any Group with one or more Facebook Pages (also referred to as Fan Pages).
The most interesting application is by Facebook itself and is called "Static FBML".

The Apple iPod touch, as we know, functions as an mp3 player. But did you know that it can now be transformed into a mobile phone. This extended functionality is possible using the free application “Truphone” available from the Apple’s App Store.
The Truphone application allows users with a Wi-Fi connection to make and receive phone calls via voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, with other iPod Touch owners, users of the Google Talk’s messaging service, and customers of Truphone’s Internet telephone service. The company said it expects to add the ability to handle landline calls. The applicatiom creates a virtual keyboard on the second-generation iPod Touch to dial calls, and requires the addition of a headset and microphone. Cnet.com

Eureka! A possible stocking stuffer that combines sensory input with one of Charlie’s preferred foods—edamame—and can be attached to the D-ring on his bookbag and readily squeezed when the noise on the schoolbus gets, well, noisy:
Asovision Edamame
If that seems a little weird (and the price is kinda steep—equivalent to buying a couple of bags of frozen edamame), there’s always virtual bubble wrap.

Google and T-Mobile have teamed up to create a new breed of cell phone.
The T-Mobile G1 is the world’s first Android Phone.
Its known as the T-Mobile G1 Android, the Android Phone, the G1 Phone, or (more informally) the Google Phone.
The G1 Android phone integrates fully with your Google accounts. Here are a few of the features and capabilities of this new cell phone:

The Google Android phone allows you to chat and share photos on applications such as Yahoo Messenger, Google, Talk, etc.
The Android allows one to run several applications at the same time, on one phone. You can switch between applications, and you can also be notified when something new occurs on one of those applications.

Last night my wife and I were sitting in the living room, talking about life… In-between, we talked about the idea of living or dying.
I said to her: ‘Dear, never let me live in a vegetative state, totally dependent on machines and liquids from a bottle. If you see me in that state I want you to disconnect all the contraptions that are keeping me alive, I’d much rather die’.
Then my wife got up from the sofa with this real look of admiration towards me…and proceeded to disconnect the TV, the Cable, the Dish, the DVD, the Computer, the Cell Phone, the iPod, and the Xbox, and then went to the fridge and threw away all my beer!!
*….I ALMOST DIED!!!*

We are going to play that game- what is in your medicine cabinet? The winner takes home a copy of a great cookbook of their choice- I have about 10 diabetic cookbooks just waiting to be given out as a prize. The latest is my fave- it even gives grocery lists for up to 20 weeks!! What a great and simple tool to help keep you on track.
How do you play you ask? Leave me a comment below- what is in your medicine cabinet when you open it up and take a peek. You can even send me a picture to post. Thank goodness I cleaned mine out last week! I will number the comments as they come in and pick the winner at random. I will then contact you with a choice of 3 cookbooks and you will pick your prize! East enough right?
Ok, send them my way… and no cleaning it out first, haha.

Freestyle Freedom Lite meter is great

As you have learned over the last 18 months or so I am always up for a new glucometer. My Mom gave me one of her new ones- she has more glucometers… Thanks Mom!
The Freestyle Freedom Lite is small and very lite in weight and easy to use. I do like that it has the option of having a 7, 14 or 30 day average and the fact that it is smaller in size. The only draw back is that I did get used to the Breeze having the strips contained within the meter and this goes back to placing them manually in the glucometer. But it is fast! And I mean fast- like 2 seconds fast. That is nice.
Does anyone use this and have any thoughts? Any tips or advice that goes along with this meter?
Thanks Barb!

Like many, I’ve been watching the release of the iPhone 3G with interest. At present I have no definite plans to get an iPhone although I’m sure I will end up with one in the next couple of years. The main thing holding me back is that I’m less than halfway through my current phone contract and I’m fairly happy with my current HTC TyTnII phone - but if I found a way to get an iPhone cheap without having to pay huge contract fees I would jump at it. The other thing is, even in it’s second iteration I’m still not convinced the iPhone is a complete product - as a phone it lacks simple things like a decent camera, video capabilities, and MMS - I still cannot fathom why it won’t work with MMS. So for now I shall continue to bide my time, whilst still en...

A Pacemaker like device to help one lose weight? This type of machine/mechanism has been around since 2005 and has been hit or miss in the past. This summer Dr. Ikramuddin plans to implant a device like such in up to 30 volunteers as part of an international research study.
In this case, a pacemaker-like device is inserted just beneath the skin near the rib cage. It sends electrical impulses to block the vagus nerve, which tells the brain when the stomach is empty. The idea, in effect, is to trick the brain in order to curb the appetite.
New studies on obesity have been examining just how much your brain has to do with losing weight among the obese.

And we’re not just talking about urologists…

Don’t worry about that guy about to operate on your gallbladder. He trained on the Wii.
According to a very small, very preliminary study, playing certain video games on the Nintendo Wii helps surgical residents to hone their fine motor skills and improve their performance on a serious surgery simulator.
OK, so a simple video game helps these docs with a slightly more complicated one. But bear with us here because the more sophisticated simulator is the sort of thing that’s used right now to help doctors do a better job on keyhole surgery using tiny instruments outfitted with video cameras.
Improvements in simulator performance didn’t come from just any Wii (see image), or any game. Marble Mania is good, for example. Tennis (a...

I got this from The Free Wifi Hotspots Directory, which compiles free wifi hotspots from all over the world. But since I’m here in the Philippines, I’m particularly interested only in what’s found here, hehehe.
Please do check these hotspots and tell me if there are those in the list that aren’t there anymore or aren’t offering wifi now. I haven’t exactly checked each and everyone just yet.

Here is a new tool that seems kind of nifty and useful! Being a diabetic does not always come without complications, as you all very well know, and the risk of developing ulcers on a foot that has little feeling due to neuropathy is very scary! There is now a foot thermometer that will allow you to monitor the temperature in your feet and compare them so that you have a heads up to be aware of the increases risk of an ulcer.
The new foot thermometer costs about $150 and insurance companies do not cover the cost. The TempTouch® thermometer is only available by prescription. For more information, log onto the company’s website.

Isn’t that there are just numerous times that we simply forget passwords for our password-protected documents in MS Word, Excel, or Access? What if you forgot that unique password you’ve used in protecting your very sensitive diary entry? Or your formulas in Excel? It would be fortunate if you usually use one or two passwords only because you’d easily be able to remember it. But what if you’ve used an uncommon one? Or a combination of two common passwords? How do you access that document then?
For your MS Word, Access, or Excel password recovery needs, you could try using the software, Password Studio Pro!
Password-Studio Pro is “the world’s most powerful Office password recovery tool. Website claims that it can check up to 140,000+ passwords instantly, which is 4x ...

I have a new glucometer… finally. My mom actually grabbed it from her doctors office for me. I won’t even go into the story of what happened to my old one! Painful at best.
It is the Ascensia Breeze 2 system. We will see how it goes. So far it is very easy to use and seems friendly. As friendly as a blood sugar measuring device can be, haha.
I have no idea what the cost of the supplies are but I will find out in the morning when I go to get the disc refills. It uses a 10-strip disc cartridge so it is no touch and convenient. The lancets that it came with look the same as my old ones but they felt so much better. I guess I can splurge and buy their name brand, especially if it stays pain free. No more sore fingertips!!!
I will keep you posted. My first reading was 126 at 7:30PM,...

Continuing to work with my Mac - now starting to deal with connectivity to various devices. Firstly I was pleased to find that I could get my Windows Mobile 6 PDA phone to sync with my MacBook without too much difficulty. All it took was a download of a beta version of a program called Missing Sync and within minutes I was able to use Bluetooth to synchronise my calendar, contacts, to-do list and more with the relevant applications on my Mac. Changes were reflected accurately in both directions. It also enables you to sync a whole lot of other items including photos, videos, call and sms logs etc, but I haven’t really explored that. But being able to get this working so quickly was a bit of a bonus. I hadn’t expected it to be so painless.

Experiencing a bit of blogging block this week, so for want of something more interesting to post on, let me briefly discuss my new phone.
Previously I had a Softbank, which is the same as a Dopod 838pro or iMate JasJam, but they all are manufactured by the company HTC, which is now releasing phones under it’s own moniker. For a few weeks I had been experiencing a few problems with the phone - a shorter and shorter battery life, and poor responsiveness and delays when using various programs. So I had a look around and discovered the upgraded model the TyTN II, which I could get on a monthly cap plan on the Three network for about what I was paying already. The perfect excuse to upgrade my phone then!
I tried to order it online through 3 but got an email back saying there would be a s...

I decided to go without Dexcom for a few days. The current sensor stopped working -- and man it was a good sensor. Lasted 10 days, and was accurate the whole time. However, if I put in a new sensor today, I'll have a sensor failure during a dog show next weekend, and it's not something I want to deal with. I'm going to try going without until Monday. I think it is probably a good idea to give my skin a bit of a rest anyway. The Dexcom is hard on it.
I discovered a new way to my house last night.
Actually I had a few suggestions but only one was of any use and some were completely wrong. I was trying out a new phone I’ve gotten - the HTC TyTN II, which has a built in GPS. Quite accurate tracking, although the maps were totally wrong in a couple of places, listing streets that had been closed off or changed considerably in the last couple of years. I’ll have to see if they can be updated at all.
If, like me, you’ve ever wondered how GPS works, there’s a good article on Wikipedia. I never knew it was run by the US defence department. I doubt I’ll use this a whole lot, but I needed a new phone and having GPS is an added bonus. Owen enjoyed watching where we were going on the way to school this morning.
Bayer Diabetes Care introduced the new Contour TS blood glucose monitoring system. Well hot dog. This handy little glucometer is expected to provide more accurate blood sugar results. And just what makes the Contour TS so special?
Unlike most meters that need to be manually coded to ensure accurate results, Bayer’s new Contour TS blood glucose meter automatically sets to the correct code any time a Bayer test strip is inserted. Manual coding may lead to miscoding. In fact, a recent study found that approximately 16 per cent—or one out of six—persons failed to properly manually code their blood glucose meters to the lot of test strips being used.
Over 40% of glucometers that are miscoded offer very “off” results that provide inaccurate treatments and therapies. T...

I know that I have written about something similar to this in the past, but here is new research that offers a non invasive way to analyze blood sugars amongst type 1 diabetics.
By using a chemical analysis method developed for air-pollution testing, UC Irvine chemists and pediatricians have found that children with type-1 diabetes exhale significantly higher concentrations of methyl nitrates when they are hyperglycemic.
The methyl nitrate exhaled concentrations were found to be at least 10 times higher in diabetic children experiencing hyperglycemia than when they are not. Wow! This is very exciting news indeed for possible non invasive type testing in the future. Wouldn’t that be grand? To test your blood sugar without a single prick… but would it be as precise and accurate? ...

My pump just went off -- post breakfast. Checked Dexcom -- 104 with a nice steady downward trend. Three hours after breakfast. I probably will make it until lunch, but I will probably eat something to be safe. At the same time, I did an increase on my bolus rate. Was using a 1:4 ratio and went to a 1:6 ratio since my pre 8:00 am was slow, and my after 8:00 was at 1:6. Plus I've gone low a bunch in the mornings lately.
Filed under: Type 1, Lifestyle, Drugs, Exercise, Products, CareFor athletes with type 1 diabetes, technological advances have opened up a whole new world. Tell your doctor you want to run a marathon? In past decades, the announcement might have been met with words of caution, even dismay. Exercise wasn't even part of the equation when it came to diabetes management. Being diagnosed with diabetes was a death knell for the careers of budding young athletes. Today, however, docs (well-informed ones, at least) are more likely to say, 'okay, let's come up with a plan.' Diabetes-related technology is a big reason for this shift in attitudes. An article just out in The New York Times. looks at the extent to which technology has made life easier for type 1 diabetics. Devices like digital meters an...

It was only a couple of weeks ago but it seems like years. I had spent a month learning how to use most of the features on my shiny new phone and we were in Alaska using Google maps to find our way around Fairbanks.

My thumbs were getting sore, but so what? I could a give a slide show on my phone, I could read my Gmail messages, and we could find a friend's house in the Google map satellite view and amaze our older relatives with the thrill of technology.

I'm not even a materialistic, gadgety sort of person, but I was in love.

And now, well, maybe you guessed it.

I’ll take advantage in a slight lull in the morning and start writing about my new phone.
For many years now I have been loyal to Palm, since my first m515 Palm Pilot, then a couple of Tungstens and finally the Treo 650. I liked the simplicity of Palm and the fact that it just worked well for all the tasks I wanted. Plus there seemed to be a lot more software available to download for Palms than for Pocket PC. I accumulated a number of useful programs for work and other uses - my most used were Agendus (a date-book/address book replacement), MyBible, a Pregnancy database program to keep track of my obstetric patients, and a prescription drug information database. As well as these key programs I had a myriad of other ones I used less often.

A friend told me last night about this cool site called Zazz. Rather than try and describe it myself I’ll quote from their FAQ (or wtf?) I especially like the last paragraph…
Q: So what is Zazz?
A: Zazz is a very special internet-based store that only sells one item a day, at a large quantity. Zazz will continue to sell that item until either it sells out, or the 24 hours ends. Should it end prematurely, you’re more than welcome to hang out but a new item won’t be available for sale until midnight the next day. Beyond this, Zazz is also a community of people who love gadgets and buying cool things they’ve always wanted but could never afford, until now.
Q: That’s ridiculous. Are you guys insane? Why on earth wo...

Neurosurgery is about to change with the arrival of Neuro Arm, a new robot system developed by specialists of The Calgary University.

This device was designed by Garnette Sutherland, a neurosurgeon who worked the last 6 years to make the device that frees the surgeons of the possible faults caused by the human hand.
“Many of our microsurgery techniques come from the 60s, and have put to the surgeons the lack of the exactitude, precision, skills and resistance,” explained the professor of neurosurgery.
“Neuro Arm shows a spatial resolutions that allows neurosurgeons to operate with such precision tha we could speak of a cellular level.”

It is designed to be operated by a neurosurgeon from a workstation, the robot operates with a system of realtime images, offering a detail...

USB thumb drives are getting cheaper and cheaper now. I bought my 1 Gig drive a couple of years ago for over $100 which was pretty good price at the time. Now you can get a 4 Gig drive cheaper than that. And with these kind of capacities available at a low price, there a few limits to what can be done with them.
Today I discovered a great site PortableApps.com which provides a great collection of stand-alone applications that can be run directly from a USB stick or portable hard drive, without any sort of installation on the host PC. All freeware and open-source stuff, they give you the ability to take your own personal suite of software, setup just the way you like it, to be used on any computer. This amphibious technology allows physiotherapists to do their job in a better environment and with less risk. It offers comfort, security and efficiency for the patients.
The structure of this device was made of nickel, floaters of polystyrene covered with fabric nylon and a mechanism that allow the necessary movements so that the patient can enter the bathtubs or pools, with no need of aid.
“With this chair the patient can move by himself without fear to sink or to hurt himsellf”, Miguel Ángel Herrera emphasized.

They are patients in a hospital, but they don’t suffer, because they are robotized models that allow students to learn without having the consequences of a real medical emergency.

It’s been a year since the beginning of the Certification and Training Center of Medical Aptitudes in the Medicine Faculty of the UNAM, 179 robots have served 19,496 students to solve urgencies: from acute coronary syndromes to high risk childbirth.

“If they don’t do it right, the patients will “die”, and this is reflected in a real EKG”, said doctor Jose Alberto García Aranda, coordinator of the CECAM.

The car is controlled by joystick but tops out at around 25 mph....tagged as: Gadgets, Wheelchair
