If you’re one of the millions feeling the after effects of Hurricane Irene in the form of power outages, flooding, and other damages, food and water safety is a paramount concern. To avoid illness from contaminated drinking water and food, the Food and Drug Administration is urging people to take the following precautions:

Do not eat any food that may have come into contact with flood water. When in doubt, throw it out.
Do not eat food packed in plastic, paper, cardboard, cloth and similar containers that have been water-damaged.
Discard food and beverage containers with screw-caps, snap lids, crimped caps (soda bottles), twist caps, flip tops, cardboard juice/milk/baby formula boxes and home canned foods, if they have come in contact with flood water. These containers cannot be ...

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning against a personal neck massaging device yesterday. The ShoulderFlex Massager, say federal regulators, can be lethal.

The ShoulderFlex Massager, distributed by King International in Beaverton, Or., sits beneath the neck of a prone user and features a rotating bar with removable, adjustable massage “fingers.” However, if the rotating parts are set incorrectly, the fingers can snag and pull a person's hair or loose clothing, causing injury and possible strangulation.

In one case, reported to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, a user was strangled to death because the ShoulderFlex Massager snagged the person's necklace during use.

The FDA warns that owners should immediate discontinue use of the massagers. The dev...

Hurricane Irene is barreling toward North Carolina, where a hurricane warning is in effect, and hurricane watches have been posted for Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and New England. Unlike their neighbors to the south, Northeasterners may not be as familiar with hurricane preparedness. Whether you’re weathering in or have to evacuate, there’s a few supplies you should have on hand.

Oh yes, it’s true. I do garden in the dark. It does sound a bit dangerous, I’ll grant you that, but it’s not exactly brain surgery or nuclear fission. The only victims might be a live yellow daisy, “dead headed” in error. I do take pity on these victims and bring them indoors and stick them in a small vase, poor things. I do have the guidance of a porch light and a couple of solar powered “rock” lights. Twilight is actually the best time because I can still enjoy the view, there is usually a cool breeze whipping up from the Columbia River and there are no dangerous UVA/UVB rays to worry about.
This strange behavior became necessary, for me, many years ago when I first began to have pain in my sitter, fatigue and skin rashes on any area where the sun struck me. I was completel...

Poison ivy, a gardener’s nemesis

Recent rains and warm temperatures have resulted in a bumper crop of poison ivy and doctors have seen an increase in outbreaks in recent weeks. Getting rid of poison ivy and its partners in pain, poison oak and poison sumac, can be a challenge but here’s something not to try—a string trimmer. Whacking the weed will just toss the bits back at you resulting in a malady called trimmer’s itch.

The itch is quickly followed by a rash and blisters and weeks of misery. Recognizing these plants and knowing where they grow is the best way to avoid them. The old adage, “Leaves of three, let it be” only applies to the ivy. Poison oak can have three to five leaves on a stem and poison sumac seven to 13. The Food and Drug Administration also recommends the following:

Sorry Bo, but a new study says that there may be no such thing as a low-allergy or allergy-free dog. So chew on that while you’re romping around the White House with Sasha and Malia (who reportedly has dog allergies). The study found that the quantities of dog allergens in homes with supposedly hypoallergenic breeds were no different from those in homes with other breeds, according to The New York Times.

So another myth busted. Bo is a Portuguese water dog, one of 11 “hypoallergenic canine candidates” on a list from the American Kennel Club, which also includes poodles, soft-coated wheaten terriers and schnauzers. “I have no idea where this whole concept came from,” Christine Cole Johnson, the senior author of the study, to be published online in The American...

Nine federal agencies have joined forces to develop a Federal Radon Action Plan that will target the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. A colorless, odorless gas, radon causes an estimated 21,000 cancer deaths each year. While the announcement was short on details, two goals are to raise awareness of radon dangers and to create jobs for radon testing and mitigation.

“This Action Plan represents an historic interagency cooperation with the potential to reduce exposure to radon, including for people and families that do not have the resources to make the simple fixes necessary to protect their loved ones,” the Environmental Protection Agency announced on its website.

One in 15 homes has elevated radon levels, according to the EPA. The agency recommends running a...

When Rebecca came to stay a few weeks ago, I was telling her how, finally, I’m getting interested in gardening. ‘Ah yes,’ she said wisely, ‘The three ages of woman. Horses, hormones and horticulture.’. How true.
I’m not sure what’s brought it on. Maybe it’s the fact that, unlike our previous London home, you have to walk through the garden to get to our house, so it feels like much more a part of home than if it were just stuck out the back. Maybe it’s that when I look out of the studio window (which I never do because I am Too Busy Writing, of course) it’s the garden that I look on to. Maybe it’s that we love this house so, and we want to give it the garden it deserves. (All the more so when the one-before-last owner sent u...

Bedbugs are back. And more than just creepy-crawly pests, scientists now worry that the parasites might be connected with a much more serious bug: A particularly nasty bacterium called MRSA.

Researchers in Canada recently conducted a study in an area of Vancouver that has both a large bedbug infestation and numerous reports of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. And in small sample of bedbugs collected from patients at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, they found three bedbug carrying the MSRA bacteria. Two other bugs were contaminated with a less dangerous superbug called vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium.

Dr. Marc Romney, a medical microbiologist at St. Paul's Hospital/Providence Health Care told Reute...

More than 27 tons of frozen, raw turkey burgers are being recalled for possible contamination with Salmonella, warned the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The turkey burgers were produced by Jennie-O Turkey Store in Willmar, Minn., and distributed to retailers nation-wide. The products included in this recall are four-pound boxes of Jennie-O turkey Store "All Natural Turkey Burgers with seasonings Lean White Meat".

Each box contains 12 1/3-pound individually wrapped burgers and can be further identified with a use by date of "DEC 23 2011" and a lot code of "32710" through "32780" printed on the side panel. How very prescient of her.
Whether we’ve written about drugs for MS, the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis, disease progression, or the joys of service animals this blog has really been about the living of “Life” as part of our lives with Multiple Sclerosis!
The past couple of days were one of those postcard Pacific Northwest weekends. Bright blue skies were streaked by only the highest and wispiest of stratus clouds, and ornamental cherry trees shed their bud casings to show their furry pink selves. Sweet grass, covered with thick morning dew, wetted and stained my tattered old denim as I began the spring planting ritual.
Gardening – vegetable gardening, as I’ve never really had mu...

Maybe you’re walking along the beach, feeling the warm sand on your bare feet. Perhaps you’re riding your bike in a park, surrounded by hundred-year-old trees and singing birds. Or maybe you’re pinching the dirt as you dig through the backyard to plant a few flowers.
Being outdoors at a park, the beach or even just a few feet from our doorsteps can feel both relaxing and invigorating.
In fact, research has shown that participating in physical activity in the great outdoors can do a world of good for your psyche.

When analyzing ten studies with 1,252 participants, UK researchers found that outdoor activities like walking, gardening and bike riding helped boost the mood and self-es...

The September issue of Wired magazine and an article in last Sunday’s New York Times illustrate a central debate in technology circles. The debate is not new — it’s being going on for two decades — but it has newfound vibrancy. The essence of the debate is about competing tech/business models: walled gardens vs. the open world wide web (web).

The debate is highly controversial and nuanced. There are “experts” on both sides.
My point today is not to take sides (although I’ll admit my canine partiality to the open web), but rather:

to point out that the debate is occurring
to explain what the discussions are about
to suggest that competition between walled gardens vs. the open web is creating healthy competition and providing consumers with great choi...

Wha…? why are we talking about Verizon…isn’t is a healthcare blog?
When a major, multinational company does a complete turnaround on its operating and business model, it’s worth noting and examining the reasons behind the switch.
Wireless Week reported on a presentation made at the CTIA conference this week by Verizon COO, Lowell McAdam:
In a nod to the future, McAdam also said Verizon Wireless will scratch its “walled garden” approach because “in a 4G world, we need to turn that guarded model inside out.” The operator will transform its business model, he said, because it realizes that innovation in applications and use will come from outside the company. Verizon will open its network, applications and location technologies to outside develope...

Short Pump Virginia was in the news this past week when Whole Foods Market announced they took over an acre in for a community garden that will help supply its local store. This is the first on-site field-to-store garden in the country and was exiting news to proponents of the Local Food Movement. The garden has separate areas for composting, an orchard and space for individual gardens and for demonstration and educational programs. By producing food on site, it will be much more sustainable and energy effecient, since this food will have no “food miles”- a buzz word that indicates how far, and how much gas has to be burned for that food to reach your table from the field.
The goal of the community garden plot is not only to have items for sale, but to create a space for edu...

This weekend I got in touch with a different side of my personality: the nature loving one. It’s the part of me that often gets buried underneath daily worries, fears and your garden variety neuroticism. While tending to issues are important, so is taking a break from them. Based on the outpouring of responses I got concerning outdoor activities on Facebook, it seems like I might not be the only one. Isn’t it nice basking in the ray of hope and possibility instead of fear and uncertainty every once in awhile?
That’s what I spent my time doing in a rustic cottage in the country. I stared out the French doors of the tiny cottage for several minutes without fear of boredom or anxiety from doing nothing. I heard and felt comforted by the subtle soundtrack created by the soun...

Getting a card in the mail, even if it isn’t for a certain occasion, can seriously cheer up someone’s day. Getting flowers is also a pretty exciting event (as long as they aren’t from a stalker). Brooklyn 5 and 10 combined two of life’s little pleasures to create Postgarden, a pop-up greeting card that comes with a packet of watercress seeds to grow inside the card.
How awesome would this look on your best friend’s work desk? Or, ahem, in the Blisstree office? We’re now accepting Postgarden notes from friends, family, or anyone who wants to get help us get a mini-garden growing.

I must first start out here by saying that I am not a gardener. I grew up deep in the country but had nobody to tell me the names of the various plants around except for those of three or four varieties of trees. Today, I can definitely distinguish a specimen of any species of moss from a sunflower, and both of those from a California redwood. I actually do know a few more species than that, but I have never really had a garden except for a horrible attempt at the house we lived in before Peter arrived, when I tried to keep the previous owner’s prize-winning rosebushes going. Buck planted a lot of squash vines the next year which tried to consume the whole house in their furious growth. That was pretty much it, as far as our efforts at gardening have gone.
Which brings me to one of t...

If you have the dedication and patience to cultivate a blooming garden this summer (which not all of us do, believe me), then you definitely want to protect your garden from insects and pests. But you also don’t want to contaminate your naturally-grown vegetables with pesticides or chemicals. Planet Green compiled a helpful list of common garden predators and what you can do to get rid of them – naturally.
1. Aphids are tiny little annoying bugs that suck the juice from leaves and stems of plants – and possibly spreading disease as they do it. Spray your plants down with a hose, and that should do the trick.
2. If you see brown spots on your asparagus stalks, or if the stalks are bent, you’re probably hosting asparagus beetles. Wasps love to eat these beet...

In the medical blogosphere, we talk a lot about medical community sites such as Sermo.com, Ozmosis.com or Doctors.net.uk and we always mention these as huge communities.
While Sermo has over 110,000 physician members, the Chinese dxy.cn has over 1.4 million professionals on its site. It has a blog, a conference site, a pharmacy channel, biomedical business information platform, it covers more than a 100 specialties, and offers thousands of jobs. I tried to translate the mission statement with Google Translate:

Composting is something every good eco-conscious woman knows she should do, but somehow finds a reason not to. It’s gross, you say. I live in a city, you sigh. The time for excuses is over. Thanks to Planet Green, there’s the City Girl’s Guide to Composting – but don’t worry, it works for non-urban types, too.
First you need to decide what kind of composting you want to do. Worm composting is good if you’re short on space (and don’t mind worms, obviously); hot composting is good if you’re a real go-getter and are willing to put a little more work into composting while reaping a more satisfying reward; and cold composting is good if you’d like a low-maintenance approach. You just dump the scraps into a bucket and let them s...

For years, the Garden State has bragged about being the nation’s medicine chest. Global headquarters dotted the map. Fledgling biotechs toiled in their shadow. Tens of thousands of employees commuted from manicured suburbs to manicured corporate campuses. Crucial meetings were held at golf courses. And there was that close relationship with offiicals in Trenton, the state capital.
But New Jersey’s dominance in the pharmaceutical world is lessening. Consider the tale of Steve Weissman. Like thousands of other highly skilled professionals, he became a victim early last year of the cutbacks and mergers that are sweeping the industry. After working 18 years as a chemist at Merck, he found himself looking for a job and spent months were spent crisscrossing the state, networking and ...

When you think Michelle Obama, it’s hard not to picture her in the White House garden. She talks about it interviews; we’ve read about it everywhere; and she even did some mulching with The Muppets. With all the recent national emphasis on the benefits of healthy eating, (including the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” campaign), no one would blame you for assuming that the White House garden is organic. But it’s not. The world’s most important gardeners actually use fertilizers and pesticides – though they’re natural, and not synthetic.
Last year, the garden produced 55 different kinds of fruits and vegetables, and more than 1,000 pounds of food. Half of the yield went to local charities, and the other half was used right the...

There’s a lot of mixed wisdom out there about what organic material you should and shouldn’t return to the earth. If you want to stay on Mother Nature’s good side, check out this list of things the Environmental Protection Agency suggests trashing instead of composting:

1. Sick plants: Adding diseased or insect-ridden plants to your compost will just make other plants ill. (But you can compost healthy plants.)
2. Coal or charcoal ash: These can also harm plant life. (But you can compost fireplace ashes.)

3. Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: While most leaves are okay to recycle, walnut leaves contain substances that can damage plants.
4. Dairy products: These will stink up your bin and attract outdoor pests. So dump your yogurt elsewhere, but toss eggshells into the compos...

Childhood Obesity: Should You Put Your Kid on a Diet?

In our fast food, TV-obsessed nation, childhood obesity is a huge problem. Poor diet and lack of exercise has led to an epidemic among children in which childhood obesity has increased by three times over the past 30 years. One in three children are overweight or obese, and the country spends $150 billion each year to treat conditions related to obesity. Let’s face it – our kids are fat!
Overweight Kid
Being overweight as a child can lead to the development of high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, orthopedic problems, depression, and a number of other diseases and ailments. Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.
Recently, First Lady Michelle Obama has been leading a nationwide campaign called “Let’s Move”...

If gardening only required planting a few seeds and periodic watering – and then yielded a huge harvest of heirloom tomatoes – I’d believe in the purported health benefits of flexing one’s green thumb. Higher self-esteem! Lower blood pressure! Soul-satisfying gazpacho! But the idea of weeding, mowing, and watering (repeat, repeat, repeat) makes me want to throw in the trowel.

Last night while many here in NJ were watching the New York Jets defeat the Cincinnati Begals (37-0!), we all gathered around the TV to watch a battle for the best using vegetables, greens and herbs from the White House garden. The contenders were Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse against Bobby Flay and the White House Executive Chef, Cristeta Comerford. Usually we record anything Iron Chef to our DVR to watch when we're ready, but this event we watched live. We started out at the White House with Alton Brown introducing First Lady Michelle Obama in a very special guest appearance, inviting the chefs to take anything from the garden..with care, of course. It was the first time I'd seen the garden in full bloom, and it was beautiful! I guess the show must have been recorded some time ago, as ...

Through my work on agriculture, I get occasional media calls on obesity and the agri-industrial complex supposedly behind it. On Sunday, for example, I gave an interview on NPR about the USDA’s push for — and subsidisation of — farmers markets and “eating locally” as the solution to poor nutrition. (This a recurrent theme of the Obama administration: Michelle Obama has made people’s food habits her business, growing a White House Garden and driving in a convoy of 36 vehicles to the H Street farmers’ market in a photo-op to promote it. The USDA even has a “People’s Garden“.)
So an article in today’s New York Times caught my eye. According to a recent study, the push for calorie postings in restaurants has had no affect on p...

It may come as a shock to anyone thinking of taking up gardening as a hobby or as a way to beat back the credit crunch by doing a little grow-your-own that gardening is based entirely on chemistry. There is no escaping this simple truth. Chemicals grow in the garden. There is no such thing as chemical-free gardening.
Now I’m not talking about the manufactured pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers that your local garden centre stocks in abundance, whether those are labelled organic, all-natural, or otherwise, those are all chemicals, and some of them are essential for success. Incidentally, even all-natural pesticides are made from chemicals shock, horror. Even if you don’t have a patch of dirt where you are raising your own veggies this year, you can find fresh, ripe tomatoes in nearly every good supermarket, produce stand, green grocer or farmer’s market. They are packed with beauty for the senses; bright in color, juicy in texture, sweet and sour at the same time.
There have been a few sunny afternoons this summer that I’ve had the stinging juices of a still-warmed by the sun tomato running down my chin in the back garden; it’s a personal joy. To share the freshness of these...

Paris, France - August 2009
The mayor of Paris has decided to end the nocturnal occupation in the Villemin Square in the tenth arrondissement of Paris. This garden has been the site of squatting by hundreds of mostly Afghan refugees since the closure of the Sangatte center near Calais. Hundreds of Afghans are currently living in deplorable conditions in Paris; some are in transit, others are applying for asylum in France. (Source: MSF Blogs)

It never fails to amaze me how companies manage to get themselves into hot water for failing to follow the law regarding breastfeeding in public or in the workplace! Here are just a few of the most recent incidents.
Acosta Tacos: The owner of Acosta Tacos in Los Angeles, California has been ordered to pay Marina Chavez $21,645.00 in lost wages plus $20,000.00 for emotional damages after the owner fired Chavez for breastfeeding her baby on her breaks. In this groundbreaking case, the California Fair Employment and Housing Commission found that breastfeeding is intrinsic to the female sex and thus breastfeeding discrimination is sex discrimination under the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA). The owner was also ordered to pay a $5,000 fine, establish a written policy on sex discriminatio...

Today I would like to do just that; think small. Think, George Shrinks, The Lilliputians along with Gulliver or Honey, I Shrunk The Kids. Some of the diminutive things in life offer us joy while other small things add up to large benefits, one small step at a time. First, let’s look at those that bring us delight in a life that can be very drab at times.
I have very recently looked at the back yard garden strip, which is just beyond our back driveway, hidden usually from our view by the wall holding up the back driveway. The strip of ground is full of nettles, the parts of it that aren’t inhabited by our neat row of ex-Christmas trees, which seem to be doing quite nicely for themselves.
This is where my inappropriate anthropomorphism of other species gets me into trouble: I now feel unable to yank out the nettles. How can I punish a bunch of plants for doing what they’re supposed to do? Namely, to grow. Nettles are high in vitamin C, I’m told, though I am unlikely to boil the plants in my kitchen. They photosynthesize and produce oxygen.
And I am not a gardener by any means, so even if it weren’t too late to plant s...

Needless to say, I was very happy to hear that the Obamas were starting a garden at the White House for the first time since the first time since first lady Eleanor Roosevelt planted her “Victory Garden” during World War II.
Michelle Obama shared her thoughts on the garden:

We want to use it as a point of education, to talk about health and how delicious it is to eat fresh food, and how you can take that food and make it part of a healthy diet.

Click on the Title of this Blogpost, just type the url of your weblog and wait. Enjoy! How narcissistic is your blog? The Web 2.0 makes people narcissistic, which is not only the results of two significant American studies, the blogosphere itself exerts cognitive self-criticism. "First Ego, then we" is now the dubious slogan of most bloggers, says German A-blogger Robert Basic. A question arises: What remains when the democratic moment of the Social Web and the haze around the blogosphere are blinded out... next to some economically motivated exploitation practices, probably a vast accumulation of trivialities and self-presentation.
So, we’re back! And to the old-new story of why the Open Science movement will fail, at least for now. I was planning to post something on a different note, but a recent discussion thread on FriendFeed called me to post about it.
This thread was started by a blog entry the poster-boy of the Open Science/Research/Buzz-Word-of-the-moment Movement, Cameron Neylon.
As most of the “literature” you find in his blog, very well written, he uses a metaphor of some mundane human social behaviour/activity trying to captivate the reader and bring him to his “open” universe. Well, if I say I am a gardener, that means I enjoy time in my gardens. Other selected habits in my bio: writing; photography; beading; collage art; various activity and miscellany regarding social entrepreneurism.

One of these days I mean to plant some seeds—from a sunflower, a zucchini, a Chinese melon—with Charlie and follow the routines of watering and watching the skies and sun and looking for growth.
In Lake Elsinore, North Carolina, a vegetable garden is growing on the grounds of Canyon Lake Middle School. Adina Ross, who teaches special needs students, asked Home Depot for a few supplies–chicken wire and stakes—and the result was that a team of some 100 volunteers from nine Home Depot stores came to build sensory, vegetable, and butterfly gardens, as well as a playground, picnic tables, and a sandbox. As noted in yesterday’s North County Times, Home Depot chose to make the school a site for a project with Kaboom, a “national organization whose vision is to ...
