Individual drinking habits may be found on a continuum from responsible drinking through alcohol abuse to alcoholism, or physical dependence. There are many signs that may point to an alcohol problem. Drunkenness on its own or solitary drinking does not necessarily indicate alcoholism. The questionnaire will be meaningful to you only if you are honest with yourself when taking it.
The important question is: Is your use of alcohol creating significant negative consequences in your life?

Do you sometimes drink heavily after a setback or an argument, or when you receive a poor grade?
When you experience trouble or are undergoing stress, do you always drink more heavily than usual?
Can you handle more liquor now than you could when you first began drinking?
Have you ever awakened the “...

Variety can be the spice of intercourse
Recovery from alcoholism, addiction, gambling or co-dependency is common for people in their forth decade. Often sexuality in relationships has been absent or troubled. This may be true for straight, gays or lesbians.
Too many men and women in long-term relationships lament that “the thrill is gone” but often don’t understand why. Some blame themselves or their partners or tell themselves that sexual boredom is as inevitable a part of growing older as wrinkles and reading glasses. It doesn’t have to be that way. And here’s why: To coin a cliché, variety can be the spice of intercourse.
There are many kinds of sex play, but here let’s consider intercourse and different ways to do it — that is, experiment with positions. This doesn’t m...

By David BoazIn the Wall Street Journal today, Cato senior fellow Walter Olson praises the New York legislature both for passing a marriage equality bill and for including guarantees of religious freedom in the bill:
For those of us who support same-sex marriage and also consider ourselves to be right of center, there were special reasons to take satisfaction in last Friday’s vote in Albany. New York expanded its marriage law not under court order but after deliberation by elected lawmakers with the signature of an elected governor. Of the key group of affluent New Yorkers said to have pushed the campaign for the bill, many self-identify as conservative or libertarian. A GOP-run state Senate gave the measure its approval….
To their credit, New York lawmakers devoted much attent...

By Caleb O. Brown
On June 12, 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down bans on interracial marriage in more than a dozen states in the case of Loving v. Virginia. Today, the highest court in the United States may soon take on the issue of marriage equality for gay and lesbian relationships. Attorneys David Boies and Theodore B. Olson are hoping the case of Perry v. Schwarzenegger will further establish marriage as a fundamental right of citizenship. Also featured are John Podesta, President of the Center for American Progress, Cato Institute Chairman Robert A. Levy and Cato Executive Vice President David Boaz.

By David BoazThe Gallup Poll reports today, “For the first time in Gallup’s tracking of the issue, a majority of Americans (53%) believe same-sex marriage should be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages.”
Here’s the history of Gallup’s polling on the issue:

Gallup notes that the shift results from a substantial increase in support among Democrats and independents in the past year, but support among Republicans didn’t budge from 28 percent. The most striking number, though, is that support among young people 18-34 soared from 54 to 70 percent, mostly reflecting a shift among men, who are now almost as supportive as women.
The new poll comes just two days after Cato’s forum, “The Case for Marriage Equali...

Please join us at 12:00 p.m. Eastern today as co-counsels for the plaintiffs Theodore Olson and John Boies join Center for American Progress president John Podesta and Cato chairman Robert A.
By David BoazTwo weeks ago I wrote about the documentary “Stonewall Uprising” and the line from a police official that caught my attention:
“This time they said, ‘We’re not going.’”
That’s how Seymour Pine of the New York Police Department’s Morals Division described the raid he led on the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village on June 28, 1969, and the unprecedented refusal of the gay men in the bar to hang their heads in shame and go silently into the paddy wagons. The “Stonewall riots” that resulted are generally regarded as the beginning of the gay rights movement in the United States.
Last night on PBS’s “American Experience,” I saw another excellent documentary, “Freedom Riders,” about the white and black civil rig...

What is sexual abstinence? Can it benefit my recovery?Relationships and sexual activities are controversial in recovery from alcoholism, addiction and co-dependency. But there are benefits to sexual abstinence. These apply equally to heterosexual, gays and lesbian.Sexual abstinence is a choice to refrain from sexual activity. This choice is usually made for a specific reason. The reason may be moral, religious, legal, or for health and safety. It may only be short-term celibacy. It’s fine to go through periods of your life in which you choose to abstain – the decision to have sex is yours to make, each and every time.Abstaining does not mean you are frigid or destined for life as a monk or a nun – it may just be a temporary decision. It lowers blood pressure, boosts immunity and reduces pain, according to a mass of evidence that has been piling up in recent years.More Pleasure, Less PainSex reduces pain. An orgasm releases the hormones oxytocin and endorphins (the brain’s pain and anxiety reliever) so that pain declines.
I once had an abscessed tooth, and in the absence of a dentist, I considered pulling it myself to end the intense pain. Secrets are like abscesses. They hurt when we touch them but we can’t stop touching them. When a secret is at the center of our integrity it produces excruciating pain. We long for the momentary intense pain that comes with releasing the pressure.
Each of us seeks to maintain a sense of internal integrity, while still making a positive impression on others. We are driven by a fear of being discredited. Sometimes that means keeping secrets, especially when the concealed information is sensitive. Concealment of sexual orientation requires considerable effort, constant vigilance, and behavioral self-editing. Although there is a wish to disclose the secret, the need to make...

By David BoazAt the Britannica Blog I write:
Many commentators have seen a shift to the right in American politics over the past two years — the reaction to spending, bailouts, and Obamacare; the rise in conservative self-identification in polls; the 2010 elections. But there’s another trend going on as well. I described it in 2009 as a “civil liberties surge.” And this week there’s new evidence.
A new study from the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press finds long-term growth in support for legal abortion, gun rights, marijuana legalization, and gay marriage.
The graphs on all these topics from Pew are pretty impressive, as is another one from the General Social Survey included in the Britannica post. I go on to note:
These new poll results should be no surprise. Pa...

Michael Lucas has made millions from gay men who have bought, or otherwise paid to view, one of hs 100+ films – roughly eighty percent of which he has starred in.
By David BoazYou know you're really wrong when Mike Huckabee can call you out. But that's the situation Mitt Romney finds himself in, as Michael Cannon points out below. Huckabee says Romney's government-run health care plan with an individual mandate is a bad idea, Romney says he's still proud of his plan, which is totally different from President Obama's government-run health care plan with an individual mandate. But really, what can he do? In 17 years of seeking high political office, he is known for two things: changing his position on a surprisingly large number of issues, and his Massachusetts health care program. Which was of course the forerunner of Obamacare, as Michael Cannon and I pointed out in the video that Michael linked. So Romney is still defending a position I think we'...

By Jason KuznickiThe Obama Administration's decision to stop defending DOMA in the courts has provoked some widespread commentary. Jim Burroway hints that Obama's strategy here is both deep and cynical. Obama's locked in a losing fight with Republicans over the budget, because Americans really do want to cut federal spending. This remains true even if, notoriously, nearly the only specific program they want to cut is our negligible foreign aid.
The mood is anti-spending, and it's just possible that a government shutdown scares Obama even more than it scares the Republicans. The remedy? Change the subject. Make Republicans in Congress defend their stance on gay marriage, which is so not the discussion they'd like to be having.
It could be one of the first instances in which gay marriage cou...

We became addicted to the search for sex and love; as a result, we neglected our lives. We sought oblivion in...

Women’s bodies react differently to alcohol than men’s bodies and this can be explained by biological differences:Women have approximately 10% more fatty tissue and less body water than men. This means that women attain a higher blood alcohol concentration (BAC) than men for the same volume of alcohol consumed.Women have lower levels of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), an enzyme involved in the metabolism of alcohol. As a result, women experience the effects of alcohol more quickly, and for longer, than men.On average, women weigh less than men and, therefore, have less tissue to absorb alcohol.Women’s hormone levels fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and this may affect the rate of alcohol metabolism in the body, causing women to experience higher blood alcohol levels at different poi...

As if you didn’t know!
Normal intercourse results in greater satisfaction, better intimacy, promotes more trust with passion and real love.

Hanky panky without intercourse does not give true satisfaction and is less intimate, passionate and loving.
Masturbation does not result in effective satisfaction, is less intimate and does not promote trust, genuine passion or love.

These are the outcomes of a new study of Portuguese women looking at relationship quality and sexual activity.
Satisfaction increased as masturbation decreased and penis-vagina sex increased.
Now what’s so new about that? Nothing I guess! But someone had to find out for sciences sake. Anyone’s that’s had sex with a partner and compared that with hanky panky without penis-vagina penetration will know what’s...

Shark patroling waiting to pounce
Thirteenth Stepping occurs when a person in recovery makes sexual overtures to a vulnerable person, a newcomer or someone newly sober, sometimes under the guise of “sponsoring” or working with the newcomer.

it violates the principle that we should help others without expectation of reciprocity or return favors, sexual or otherwise.
it taints the apparent motives of other AA members who really desire nothing other than to help the newcomer get sober.
it can give an entire group the undeserved reputation as a “meat market,” and it can deprive the newcomer of the feeling that there is at least one safe place to be.

Thoughts

Do we at the very least avoid 13th stepping ourselves?
Do we help newcomers, especially those who are vulnerab...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up. Tyler Clementi’s Choice: Sex, Death and Video-Rape at Rutgers.
If you try to draw a line between hate crimes and natural human behavior, you’d better have a good eraser.
On Sept. 22, violinist and Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi jumped to his death after video of a (gay) sexual encounter was secretly filmed and posted on the Internet, allegedly by fellow students Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei. So far, Ravi and Wei have been charged with invasion of privacy, but some people are calling for hate-crime prosecution.

By David BoazCharles Krauthammer calls same-sex marriage “the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history.” Really? Some might say that ending “till death do us part” was more radical. And maybe ending the requirement that the bride promise to “love, honor, and obey.” And how about the end of polygamy? Polygamy was probably the most common marital system in the broad sweep of human history, but now it is virtually unknown in the Western world; indeed, ahistorical conservatives warn that allowing two people of the same sex to make a vow of marriage could lead to polygamy.
More currently, I would suggest that the truly radical redefinition of marriage is the revolution over the past generation in the idea that people should marry before they c...

Can it be? Is it really the end of September? According to our Twitter followers, I might not be the only one feeling the swiftness of September.
It’s funny how no matter how hard we try to pay attention to every moment, the days and moments still fly by. And here we are again, another month is gone. Soon it will be winter and then 2011!
The good news is that the rapidity of time makes it all the more valuable and a worthy cause to find the goodness in all situations. Like how Mindfulness & Psychotherapy is showing us how to do it this week and kind of like how Mentoring & Recovery is teaching us how to be more of a inner coach rather than an inner critic.
It’s all of these things that show us how to live life more meaningfully that helps the moments go by just a little...

By Michael F. CannonIn the wake of Senate Democrats’ inability to break a GOP filibuster of the defense appropriations bill, to which Democrats hoped to attach the pro-immigration Dream Act and a repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, the Reason Foundation’s Shikha Dalmia writes in Forbes:
But if Harry Reid was the proximate cause of this bill’s demise, ObamaCare was the fundamental cause. The ugly, hardball tactics that Democrats deployed to shove this unpopular legislation down everyone’s throat have so poisoned the well on Capitol Hill that Democrats have no good will left to make strategic alliances on even reasonable legislation anymore. When a party has such huge majorities, even small gestures of reconciliation are eno...

By David BoazSocial conservatives talk about real problems but offer irrelevant solutions. They act like the man who searched for his keys under the streetlight because the light was better there.
Social conservatives tend to talk about issues like abortion and gay rights, stem-cell research and the role of religion “in the public square”: “Those who would have us ignore the battle being fought over life, marriage and religious liberty have forgotten the lessons of history,” said Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) at the Values Voter Summit.
But what is the case for social conservatism that they’ve been making at the summit and in recent interviews?

Mike Huckabee: “We need to understand there is a direct correlation between the stability of families and the stability...

We’re getting that funny, excited feeling in our stomachs — the weekend must be coming. What have you got planned? Check out our ideal weekend plans:

Watch a foreign film.
Yes, sometimes we stop watching yoga videos long enough to indulge in a little entertainment. Has anyone seen 5×2?

Make some oatmeal.
While it’s not usually what we reach for in warm weather, we need a wholesome, simple meal this weekend. We’ll somehow try to resist a breakfast of gravy and fried meat.

Take a walk down memory lane.
Now that we’ve revisited beloved commercials from our childhoods, we think it’s time to move on to TV shows. Small Wonder, anyone?

Clean out the pantry.
There is definitely some food we aren’t going to touch in there that would be much better off ...

Twenty Questions to help identify sexually compulsive actions
Sexual addiction can be a problem for people in recovery from alcoholism, gambling, addiction or codependency. This can be so whether one is gay, lesbian or straight. These questions may help identify or dismiss the problem.

The Twenty Questions

Do you frequently experience remorse, depression, or guilt about your sexual activity?
Do you feel your sexual drive and activity is getting out of control? Have you repeatedly tried to stop or reduce certain sexual behaviors, but inevitably you could not?
Are you unable to resist sexual advances, or turn down sexual propositions when offered?
Do you use sex to escape from uncomfortable feelings such as anxiety, fear, anger, resentment, guilt, etc. which seem to disappear when ...

But you could figure it out by reading his columns. In his latest, on the California gay marriage decision, he ranges from factual inaccuracy to a revelation of just how reactionary and authoritarian he really is to a really striking biblical citation.
He starts by denouncing the “decision by a single, openly gay federal judge.” Not true. Judge Vaughn Walker may be gay, but he has never said so. And Salon magazine demonstrates that any such “evidence” is extraordinarily thin. So this is an extra...

A father-of-two who successfully beat a damaging internet porn addiction said a Plymouth support group saved his life from spiralling dangerously out of control.
The city 40-year-old said his compulsion to secretly download pornographic images for hours on end almost wrecked his marriage and career.

As an American, I was proud when I heard the news. I grinned to myself. It was on my way to work, through a beautiful city park, with the sun rising over the hillside. The morning radio program reported the news that a California judge overturned their state’s ban on gay marriage.
I know what you’re thinking: A medical blog is running amuck right into a political hornet’s nest. But isn’t it true that a nation’s kindness is a defining characteristic?
America and Americans do much that is good and right. Examples of such goodness are too numerous to list. If you are a victim of a calamity, you can be sure that America will help. Ask Haiti. And it’s not just foreign countries, we help each other. There’s a flood and then there are volunteers. A powe...

By Ilya ShapiroI haven’t even begun to dig into Judge Walker’s 138-page (!) opinion that strikes down Proposition 8 on both due process and equal protection grounds, but here are three key excerpts. First, the conclusion that government lacks a “rational basis” for preventing same-sex couples from marrying:
Proposition 8 fails to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license. Indeed, the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples.
Then the equal protection conclusion:
Because Proposition 8 disadvantages gays and lesbians without any rational justification, Proposition 8 violates the Equal Prot...

This article may be a guide to seeking help.
When Stephen Braveman suggested to his wife that they needed sex therapy, he did so with trepidation. He worried he’d “be seen as a pig who only wants sex.” Even though he’s a practicing sex therapist himself, his marriage wasn’t immune from the intimacy challenges that face so many couples.
In his case, says Braveman of Monterey, Calif., his upbringing during the “free love” 1960s in California put him at odds with his wife’s native German culture.
“It’s just not in her personality to be verbally expressive in the bedroom,” he says. Still, she agreed to join him in therapy, and the couple has “made progress.”

10 things lesbians should discuss with health care providers in recovery.
Lesbians in recovery have just as much need for regular health checks as other people.
The Gay and Lesbian Medical Association (GLMA) has listed 10 health care concerns lesbians should include in discussions with their physicians or other health care providers.
The medical group ranks breast cancer as the top priority. Other necessary topics include depression, gynaecological cancer, diet and osteoporosis.
"Many lesbians and far too many health professionals are not comfortable or do not know how to discuss health issues related to sexual orientation," said GLMA Executive Director Maureen S.
Argentina Sets an Example of Equality Before the Law for Latin America

By Juan Carlos HidalgoNowadays, it’s hard to find an instance where Argentina sets a positive example for the rest of Latin America. However, last night’s vote in that country’s Senate that legalizes same-sex marriages must be praised as that. Argentina has now become the first country in Latin America to recognize marriage equality for all couples.
The fight for marriage equality is just beginning in Latin America. Outside of Argentina, only Mexico City grants gay couples the right to marriage. Uruguay has granted civil union rights to same-sex couples since 2008, and last year in Colombia the Constitutional Court ruled that same-sex couples can be recognized as de facto unions, which enjoy all the rights of marriage. In December, Costa Rica might hold a referendum on this issue. Wh...

Women Say Sexual Health Issues Impact Multiple Aspects of Their Lives.
Many women in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, compulsive gambling or co-dependency may identify with this survey. The women included were heterosexual, lesbian and/or bisexual.
National Survey Shows 70% of Women Have Experienced a Sexual Health Issue
A new survey released today shows 70 percent of women report having experienced a sexual health issue, of which 22 percent felt very or extremely concerned.
The survey also found that many women claim they would be comfortable talking to a health care provider about a sexual health issue, but less than one-fifth (18%) actually visited their health care provider when they experienced one.
The survey, commissioned by the US National Women’s Health Resource Center (...

This article discusses the problem and where to seek help.
At one time or another, almost every man experiences erectile dysfunction. Defined as an inability to achieve or maintain an erection firm enough to have satisfying intercourse.
Erectile dysfunction has an impact on more than just a man’s self-esteem – it may also wreak havoc on a relationship.
Some women buy into the myth that men are highly sexual and ready at any time. They may see their partner’s lack of an erection as a sign that he doesn’t love or desire her and she may blame herself for her partner’s lack of response.
Embarrassment, anxiety and a lack of information about erectile dysfunction can contribute to this sexual problem.
Past sexual practices, including masturbation, do not cause ...

My name is Mary and I’m a lesbian alcoholic in Alcoholics Anonymous
I’m an alcoholic. I’m 27. I’m a woman. I’m a homosexual. I’ve been sober in the beautiful Fellowship of A.A. for 17 months and, for the first time in many years, find myself smiling, laughing, and really caring for other people.
After ten years of alcoholic drinking, that life of horror, loneliness, and despair brought me to the doors of my first A.A. meeting. In the first few months of my sobriety, I tried to follow suggestions, went to many meetings, joined a group, and found a sponsor whose sobriety I respected.
But during this time, I lived in fear — fear of my homosexuality being discovered, fear of being rejected by fellow A.A. members, fear of being left alone to cope with my ...

Today’s the first day of Elena Kagan’s confirmation hearings as President Obama’s second Supreme Court nominee. Republicans will try to give Kagan a hard time, but she really doesn’t have any major skeletons in her closet to give them fuel. Oh, aside from this one: She has a history of promoting gay rights. And she has short hair. Holy cow – she must be a lesbian, or at least she was one once. And having a lesbian on the Supreme Court would send America straight into the gutter. Obviously.
Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays has urged Kagan to come out as an “ex-lesbian,” while anti-gay group MassResistance is threatening to release a report of her activism for gay rights. Wait – a person pursuing equal rights for everyone as dec...

The study;
Historically, the reasons people have sex have been assumed to be few in number and simple in nature-

to reproduce,
to experience pleasure, or
to relieve sexual tension.

Several theoretical perspectives suggest that motives for engaging in sexual intercourse may be larger in number and psychologically complex in nature. Our first study used a procedure that identified 237 expressed reasons for having sex.
Here are the top 50 reasons women have sex;

I was attracted to the person
I wanted to experience the physical pleasure
It feels good
I wanted to show my affection to the person

Addiction is a complex issue. It affects every member of the family and can have a lasting impact on their lives. The effect on family members varies from person to person and family to family.
How Does an Addiction Develop?
Addiction is a process rather than an event. In the beginning, people often don’t experience any difficulties. As their use continues, they may begin to focus more on the alcohol, drugs or gambling than they do on the other areas of their lives. This process is often influenced by a number of factors, including the culture they live in, life events, their biological makeup and their relationships with family and friends.
Researchers have looked at genetics, environment, and the combination of these two to explain how dependence develops. Right now, it’s bel...

By David BoazEvidence that Republican leaders and conservative pundits want to shake off their anti-gay image continues to mount. Since the 2008 election, gay marriage has become legal in four more states and the District of Columbia, yet conservatives have been virtually silent. As Congress moves to repeal the don’t ask, don’t tell policy, Republicans are almost all voting against it, but they’re not making a lot of noise about it. Jonathan Rauch cites the lack of interest in Iowa in overturning the state court’s gay marriage decision and Republican strategist Grover Norquist’s observation that the Tea Party enthusiasm is focusing Republicans and conservatives on economic rather than social issues.
Many politicians have had a long dark night of the poll....

Researchers propose a model of development whereby a person moves from voluntary dieting through a number of stages to reach a fully entrenched eating disorder.
Stage 1: Normal, voluntary dieting behaviour.
Unfortunately dieting behaviours have become the “norm”, with

47% of people in Australia having tried to lose weight in the past twelve months.
68% of fifteen year old girls are dieting at any one time,
8% of these are on a severe diet.

While these diets are severe enough to be considered an eating disorder, they are unhealthy and result in rapid weight changes, disrupted metabolism, dehydration, low energy and lack of essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients.
Stage 1B: (in Bulimia Nervosa only).
The hunger associated with dieting and restriction leads to severe and con...

Compulsive gambling is a symptom of an emotional, spiritual, psychological and physical illness, characterized by low self-esteem, immaturity, instability and obsessive behavior.
Because compulsive gambling is an insidious and baffling illness, some adults have difficulty deciding if they were affected by compulsive gambling during childhood.
The following questions may help you to determine whether compulsive gambling affected your childhood or present life.

Do you obsess about money?
Did family activities revolve around gambling events? (sports, cards, lottery, racetracks, etc.)
Have you ever been missing money?
Have you ever paid or been asked to pay a parent’s debts?
Do your parents often argue about money?
Were you forced to form an alliance with one par...

From their website;
While alcoholism crosses all sexual orientations, gay and lesbian alcoholics in recovery often face unique challenges. Professional assistance may be sometimes tainted by the prejudices of those providing it, or at a minimum be limited by the caregivers’ lack of knowledge of those aspects of gay society that distinguish it from the larger straight community. These limitations may become more pronounced when one seeks assistance from mainstream sobriety self-help groups, where prejudices and lack of knowledge can be more glaring in lay men and women who, though sober, lack professional helping skills.

What I hadn’t realized was that I had gone into full addict mode. The meeting I had was a disaster that morning.
Alcoholics should avoid excessive physical and emotional stress during early abstinence.
Researchers have found that an important system (The HPA axis) of the body that regulates stress, hunger and illness is “stunned” during alcoholic drinking.
The researchers tested alcoholics in early recovery (less than 12 months) and found that the HPA axis recovers after about 8 weeks.
Any stress can trigger an abnormal response but moderate to extreme stress can be dangerous to abstinence and may trigger a relapse.

King Heroin is my shepherd, I shall always want.
He maketh me to lie down in the gutters.
He leadeth me beside the troubled waters.
He destroyeth my soul.
He leadeth me in the paths of wickedness for the effort’s sake.
Yea, I shall walk through the valley of poverty and will fear all evil for thou,
Heroin, art with me.
Thy Needle and capsule try to comfort me.
Thou strippest the table of groceries in the presence of my family.
Thou robbest my head of reason.
My cup of sorrow runneth over.

The study;

Here are the top 50 reasons men have sex;

I was attracted to the person
It feels good
I wanted to experience the physical pleasure
It’s fun
I wanted to show my affection to the person

Men in their 50s have more satisfying sex lives than men in their 30s
Men in their fifties are more satisfied with their sex lives than men in their thirties and forties, recording similar levels to 20-29 year-olds, according to a survey published in the February issue of BJU International.
A team of experts from Norway and the USA surveyed 1,185 men aged between 20 and 79, asking them about various aspects of their sex life, including drive, erections and ejaculation.
They found that although there was a strong relationship between a man’s advancing age and his declining sex drive and ability to have an erection and ejaculate, there wasn’t such a strong link between age and overall sexual satisfaction.
The men who responded to the Norwegian postal questionnair...

A violent storm approaches
What is the definition of domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse between spouses or intimate partners is when one person in the relationship tries to control the other person.
The perpetrator uses fear and intimidation and may threaten to or actually use physical violence. Domestic abuse that includes physical violence is called domestic violence.
Domestic abuse and alcoholism / addiction often go hand-in-hand.
The victim of domestic abuse or domestic violence may be a man or a woman.
Domestic abuse occurs in traditional heterosexual marriages, as well as in same-sex partnerships.
The abuse may occur during a relationship, while the couple is breaking up, or after the relationship has ended.

Sex Addicts Anonymous
Attending SAA meetings starts us on a new way of life. But while the SAA fellowship supports our recovery, the actual work of recovery is described in the Twelve Steps.
Meetings are forums for learning how to integrate the steps into our lives. Working the Twelve Steps leads to a spiritual transformation that results in sustainable relief from our addiction.
“Our fellowship is open to women and men, regardless of age, race, religion, ethnic background, marital status, or occupation. We welcome members of any sexual identity or orientation, whether they are gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual, or transgender.”

By Chris MoodyIn a new episode of Stossel, Cato’s David Boaz and Jeffrey Miron join a panel of experts to discuss where libertarians stand on a host of major issues facing the nation today. They tackle libertarian views on war, abortion, the welfare state, gay rights and more.
Watch the videos below for a full re-cap.
The first video covers the so-called culture wars, including gay marriage, abortion and immigration:

More videos after the jump.

In the second video they discuss the role of government in providing aid to the poor:

In the third video, the panelists discuss libertarian views of war. Should the United States leave Afghanistan and Iraq? What should we do about Iran? Watch:

I’ve noticed that most of the discussion is from the female perspective. Probably because most of the people who participate are women, so that’s understandable. But I hope to shed some light on the male side of things the best I can.
Usually when a woman is in emotional pain she needs to vent, and it really helps if that place to vent is as anonymous as possible.
Women are made differently than men.
A man will usually retreat to some place of quiet – some place where there is nothing going on at all – where he can regroup – somewhere where he can think and sort everything out. Like when Teddy Roosevelt lost his wife and mother in the same day – he went to the Badlands alone and spent time in the wilderness thinking things through. He was there for several mont...

What are the risks of sexual activities other than penile-vaginal intercourse?
In recovery from alcoholism, addiction and compulsive gambling many people begin to take more responsibility for their sexual behaviors.
Many couples engage in mutual masturbation, oral sex and anal sex instead of penile-vaginal intercourse to prevent pregnancy and avoid catching sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These activities reduce the risk of pregnancy, but most people don’t know that the risk of spreading an STI stays significantly high.
Various infections may be spread through blood, saliva, semen, and feces. Different organisms have different risks of being spread, but the risk is always increased with open sores and abrasions, or other breaks in the skin, oral or vaginal lining.

Ok, here’s the deal. I didn’t want to look foolish after going to all the trouble of making this video to enter in a contest to win a free copy of Kathy Griffin’s latest DVD release, “She’ll Cut a Bitch.” I mean it was a lot of work for something I could have ordered off of Amazon for 15 bucks. So I released the video even though I knew I missed the deadline. However like a gift from little baby jesus himself, she has a new and even better contest: tickets to Pridefest, and a meet and greet.
The I decided to go green and recycle my first video as I thought it was fabulous, and is the most popular video by far I’ve made so far in terms of viewing hits.

Try to adopt the following approaches to your alcoholic / addict;
1. Try to learn the facts about alcoholism and other drug addiction. Keep an open mind.
2. Recognize addiction for what it is-a disease of the body, mind, behavior, and spirit from which people can and do recover. Like other diseases, nobody really intends to get it or wish it upon their loved ones once they have it. Try to remember that the alcoholic / addict in your family isn’t doing this at you. This is a disease beyond will power.
3. Practice detachment. Do not allow yourself to become obsessed with your family member. This is sometimes called “release with love.” In effect, there are times that you simply must let go and let the alcoholic / addict experience the consequences of their drinking and dru...

By Christopher PrebleSecretary Gates’s new guidelines for “don’t ask, don’t tell” are consistent with the Obama administration’s plan to alter—and eventually reverse—the misguided policy. Both the guidelines and their ultimate goal deserve broad public support.
In the nearly 17 years since it was enacted, DADT has impeded military effectiveness by prohibiting motivated and well-qualified individuals from serving their country.
A new generation of military leaders, both officers and enlisted, has seen the harm and injustice done by this policy, and is ready for change. As this cohort advances through the ranks, and as an earlier generation that was not willing to change retires from service, we should anticipate a relatively smooth transition to a pol...

Oh my god, it has taken me almost four days to return to normal after three days of non-stop a go-go to NYC and back last weekend.
I don’t think I can do much more of these whirlwind trips any more; another sign I’m getting old and virally worn out.
There was a time when I’d fly in Friday and fly out Sunday to any given city all the time, but come to think of it, it was tiring even 20 years ago. I’m not sure what made me think this was going to be any different.
I do have to say, I was so off my game in NYC. The interview, although can be edited into something ok, my mind went a blank. This should have been a piece of cake interview after 20 years of doing this kind of stuff.
Perhaps it was the fact that I wasn’t feeling well and was up since 4 am the night before leaving having ...

There appears to be yet another reason to scrutinize clinical trials - exclusion of lesbians and gay men from clinical trials in the US, particularly those with sexual function as an end point, according to an analysis that was published in the letters section of The New England Journal of Medicine.
A search using the terms “couples,” “erectile dysfunction,” and “hypoactive” (related to hypoactive sexual disorder), yielded 243 studies, of which 37, or 15 percent, had explicit exclusionary language. The results indicated that industry-sponsored trials, multi-region trials (according to census definitions), and Phase III trials were the most likely to exclude lesbians and gay men, according to researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

Your libido is your sexual interest and desire. Loss of libido may be experienced by women before or after menopause and may result in reduced desire and sexual experiences that are no longer satisfying or pleasurable.
With greater awareness, knowledge and discussion about sexual health issues, more women are seeking advice for low libido from health practitioners. Low libido is a very sensitive issue and often occurs because of stress, substance use or abuse, tiredness, relationship difficulties, or depression. It can also be caused by a variety of medications used to treat unrelated conditions.
Rest, relaxation, recreation and exercise – like walking, playing a sport, yoga, dancing or gardening – can all have positive effects on libido, as well as on health, bo...

Characterized by;

pain or discomfort with sexual intercourse,
rawness,
stinging,
itching and
burning in the vagina or vulva,
vulvodynia is a common condition, but it is often undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

“The symptoms of vulvodynia mimic those of other, common vulvovaginal infections,” explains Christin Veasley, associate executive director of the National Vulvodynia Association in Silver Spring, Md. “Women are routinely and incorrectly told that they have a yeast or bacterial infection over and over again.”
Vulvodynia is more prevalent than most health practitioners realize. Roughly 16% of women between the ages of 18-64 have expe...

By David BoazIt’s that time of year again, when friends start telling me about this or that candidate I should support because he or she is a dedicated defender of liberty and limited government. I’m a political junkie, so I love getting these recommendations. But I don’t end up supporting or contributing to many candidates. In my view, it’s not enough for a candidate to say that he’s ”committed to slashing wasteful spending, providing tax relief, and eliminating red tape.” What’s your actual tax plan? What spending do you propose to cut or eliminate? Not many of them offer clear answers to that.

It surprises me how many people noticed I changed my Facebook info.
By doing so I entered this odd Facebook grey zone – relationship status. I had been getting messages from newly acquired FB friends recently that weren’t of the nature I’d be looking for on FB, such as the dick shot, or the watersports TMI message.
Now for those who know me I’m not easily shocked. Perhaps I’m just becoming a prude in my old age. Call me old fashioned but I like to keep my Manhunt moments on Manhunt, and Facebook on Facebook.
I hadn’t realized that I had several things checked off such as single, looking for relationship, friendship, and maybe networking of something.
These went quickly. “No wonder.” I thought.
In addition I have been seeing someone over the past few months. ...

1. The best position for his enjoyment
Practically every animal species utilizes the rear-entry “doggy-style” position, so it is a natural one for humans to enjoy, as well. While you won’t have face-to-face contact, there are many benefits. It’s great for guys because it gives them full control.

This study is very important to modern society. This is especially so since the sexual revolution opened peoples minds to a broader range of sexuality and sexual expression.
Historically, the reasons people have sex have been assumed to be few in number and simple in nature–

to reproduce,
to experience pleasure, or
to relieve sexual tension.

Several theoretical perspectives suggest that motives for engaging in sexual intercourse may be larger in number and psychologically complex in nature. The survey included heterosexual and gay men.
Here are the top reasons men have sex;

I was attracted to the person
It feels good
I wanted to experience the physical pleasure
It’s fun
I wanted to show my affection to the person
I was sexually aroused and wanted the release
I was ‘‘horny’’

Sexual Compulsives Anonymous is a 12 Step Fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other, that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from sexual compulsion.
These are the characteristics most of us seem to have in common:

As adolescents, we used fantasy and compulsive masturbation to avoid feelings, and continued this tendency into our adult lives with compulsive sex.
Compulsive sex became a drug, which we used to escape from feelings such as anxiety, loneliness, anger and self-hatred, as well as joy.
We tended to become immobilized by romantic obsessions. We became addicted to the search for sex and love; as a result, we neglected our lives.
We sought obli...

This article will give many people in recovery food for thought.
What is a healthy relationship and how does sex fit in?
In the simplest terms, a healthy relationship is one that makes you feel good about yourself and your partner. Not only do you enjoy being together, but you can express your true self, and allow your partner to do the same. All relationships are different, of course, but healthy ones have at least five important qualities in common.
The acronym S.H.A.R.E. can help you remember these qualities.
Safety: In a healthy relationship you feel safe. You don’t worry that your partner will harm you physically or emotionally, and you don’t feel inclined to use physical or emotional violence against your partner. You can try new things (such as taking a night class) or c...

Accepted norms of sexual behavior and attitudes vary greatly within and among different cultures.
Generally, what is normal and abnormal cannot be defined readily. However, when sexual behavior or difficulties bother a person or their partner or cause harm, treatment is warranted.
Societal attitudes about sexuality also change with time, as has occurred with the following:
Masturbation: Once widely regarded as a perversion and a cause of mental disorders, masturbation is now recognized as a normal sexual activity throughout life. It is considered abnormal only when it inhibits partner-oriented behavior, is done in public, or is sufficiently compulsive to cause distress. About 97% of males and 80% of females masturbate. Although masturbation is harmless, guilt created by the disapproval and...

By Jason KuznickiWouldn’t it be great if we could just get the state out of the marriage business? Perhaps. Marriage is fundamentally private, after all. It’s a matter for families, churches, and couples to decide for themselves.
Yet state recognition of marriage often acts to keep the government out of private life, to ensure family stability, and to give regular, orderly rules for all those times when, despite our best efforts, family and state still collide. Here are just a few of the things that the civil side of marriage does:

If you’re happily married and you have children, you don’t have to worry for a moment about child custody law. Your children are yours to raise jointly, whether they are biological or adoptive.

I am in such a fog today. The ADD medication so has been pretty good. There have been a couple drawbacks. One is that I can get far too easily stressed out, and I have to watch that. The old habit of drinking a pot of coffee isn’t what it used to be. That might have been tolerable when I wasn’t adding any supplementary stimulants into my body. Not any more! Yesterday I felt so stressed over some things that I just took a break and enjoyed the beautiful sunny day on what would normally gloomy cold February day. It has been such exceptional winter weather wise that it seemed to be a waste worrying about things that are just a blip in the radar in life.
Don’t me wrong; I’m far from being a basket case of nerves. But sometimes when things are bothering me, I have to foc...

My column on GayGuideToronto.Com is different from Acid Reflux in that I write about more topical issues, where I want to get back writing more frequently about what’s going on in my life, in addition to exploring video etc. I will let everyone know, and then I will be focused in one place.
There are so many exciting things going on!

“Seeking sexual satisfaction is a basic desire, and masturbation is often our first teenage natural sexual activity. It’s the way we discover our eroticism, the way we learn to respond sexually, the way we learn to love ourselves and to build self-esteem.”

And, said Woody Allen, “it’s having sex with the one you love.”
Many people in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, ACOA or codependency may not be in a sexually active relationship. Relations may need to be rekindled or new relationships may be needed. Additionally, many people may not want to endanger their new found sobriety by being involved in an emotionally charged relationship.

Love, Sex & Intimacy in Recovery from alcoholism or addiction.
Sex in recovery can be the trickiest problem of all. So true for heterosexuals, gays and lesbians.
Why? Because there’s so much room for things to go wrong. And feelings get so distorted when they do.
Take sexual dysfunction. After cleaning up from chemicals, many dependent persons — particularly men — find that they’re unable to function sexually.
Impotence can be frustrating — for both partners. It can trigger a flood of self-loathing in a man and a current of tension and self-doubt in a woman.
If it happens to you, don’t panic or take it personally. Impotence usually isn’t a major crisis. Time, understanding, and simple communication almost always make it better.
That’s bec...

By David RittgersContrary to the claims of some conservatives, gays can and do serve in the military. This video highlights the story of a combat medic at Fort Hood, Texas, one of the major troop installations in the United States. Warning: long video (13 minutes).

Sergeant Darren Manzella served as a combat medic, and his chain of command investigated the claim that he was gay. Manzella provided pictures and video of him with his boyfriend, but found “no evidence of homosexuality.”
The story makes clear that Manzella gave them plenty evidence of homosexuality, but it didn’t make any sense to get rid of a good soldier in a critical field when he wanted to continue serving and there was a war going on.
The British and Israeli armed forces allow gays to serve openly and st...

Is there Sex after Menopause?
Many women come into recovery from alcoholism or addiction having passed through menopause or in the middle of it. As this article discusses menopause can be a traumatic experience for any women; and even more so for women undergoing profound changes to their social life through recovery.
New treatments offer ways to treat symptoms and improve sexual function
Nothing strikes fear in the hearts of women like the thought of menopause. The shifting hormone levels that are associated with “the change” can lead to everything from mood swings, insomnia and weight gain to decreased sex drive. However, despite the common dread most women have for this time, the truth is that menopause does not have to be the end of the world … or the end of a woman’s sexualit...

This article may help stir desires for pleasures foregone or forgotten. This is true for straights, gays and lesbians.
Preparation is key, so be prepared. That’s a good lesson for life in general and a vital lesson for sex.
Great sex isn’t just penetration – the build-up is a very important part. In fact most women can’t reach orgasm without it. Foreplay makes the whole thing last much longer and, to be frank, is really rather good.
If just the thought of sex is enough to get you raring, slow down a bit – your partner may want to take a little more time. Women generally take longer to become sexually aroused than men; the fire needs to be stoked. Try and keep foreplay going until you both just can’t wait for penetration.
Foreplay will increase the chances of org...

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Sexercises: Workouts to Work You Up
You know all of the good-for-you arguments for becoming more physically active, but here’s an especially attractive reward: exercise can improve your sex life.
This is especially so for women in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, adult children of alcoholism, co-dependency, compulsive gambling or depression.
Being physically active helps you feel more interested in sex, gives you the energy and strength you need for enjoying your partner or yourself more, reduces the stress that can block sexual interest and builds the muscles used in sexual intimacy.
Research shows that exercise boosts women’s sexual arousal—even if they were experiencing low sexual desire before starting physical activity. That ef...

Many people in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, co-dependency and compulsive gambling may identify with these points. They may be the victim, the perpetrator or an observer. These reasons apply to heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual and transsexual people.
Additionally, just because someone is in recovery does not exclude them from being difficult in relationships.
Why would a woman stay in a relationship with a guy who puts her down, hems her in, and perhaps even physically abuses her? Why would a woman hold down two jobs to keep the rent paid and food on the table while her boyfriend sits around smoking weed all day? Why oh why would a woman allow herself to be emotionally blackmailed by her boyfriend’s threats that he will kill himself or her or both if she even talks ab...

LGBT ally Rep Diane Watson will not run for re-election
by Karen Ocamb
February 11, 2010
Longtime LGBT ally Congressmember Diane E. Watson (D-CA) formally announced Thursday that she is not seeking re-election. She wants Karen Bass, the outgoing Speaker of the California Assembly and another pro-LGBT ally, to replace her representing California’s 33rd Congressional District.
Watson’s openly gay legislative deputy Charles Stewart describes below how his boss told her staff she was retiring. But first something about Watson.
I first met Diane Watson in the early 1990s at AIDS activist Phill Wilson’s house for a meet and greet with the California State Senator, where she’d been serving since 1978. First thing that struck me was how tall she was – statuesque and elegant and smart. Tu...

S.L.A.A. Preamble
Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous is a Twelve Step, Twelve Tradition-oriented fellowship based on the model pioneered by Alcoholics Anonymous.
The only qualification for S.L.A.A. membership is a desire to stop living out a pattern of sex and love addiction. S.L.A.A. is supported entirely through the contributions of its membership, and is free to all who need it.
We admitted we were powerless over sex and love addiction – that our lives had become unmanageable.
Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood God.
Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of o...

Sex goes on
Many people in recovery are in the older age groups.
Either starting recovery or well along the road sexual activity and responses can be different to what they remember or may have a different spiritual meaning.
By understanding age changes one can accommodate new experiences rather than be confused or disheartened.
Sexual Desire May Never Stop
Women and men have the capacity for sexual desire and sexual activity throughout their lives. There is no reason why one cannot express one’s sexuality well beyond the “reproductive years” (the ages during which men and women are fertile).
In fact, women and men who have been sexually active throughout their adult lives seem to be more sexually responsive in old age than those who have not. The key to maintaining sexual function ...

40+ Sexuality
Th...

I haven’t been getting depressed, but I do wake up so bloody tired and stay that way all day. This is probably due to the fact that I’ve been working hard on a lot of various projects, all of which I enjoy a lot. Then it hits me, what I call “The Wall”
I met this guy at the Y, and we had a chat afterwards, and the subject of health comes up. I have a really hard time answering the question of whether or not I’m in good health or not.
I get a lot of colds, and various weird, yet not parlous health problems. The single number one thing for me is my stamina. I do not have the ability to push myself a great deal. Getting up a few hours early one day and running a lon...

Growing up in an alcoholic family
“Sometimes I feel like I was raised by wolves,” sighed James, a 55-year-old man who grew up in a home with two alcoholic parents. “I’ve gone through so much of my life guessing at what ‘normal’ is. It’s like trying to find your way through a dark woods without a compass.”
According to Rosemary Hartman reactions like James’ are typical for people who grew up in dysfunctional families. But acknowledging that there were issues that deeply affected the whole family system is an important first step toward emotional and spiritual healing.
Hartman said this acknowledgment frequently happens when adults have their own children. “They want to be good parents, but struggle with how to do it. They have s...

CONCLUSIONS: Adolescent COAs are at risk for depression, suicide, eating disorders, chemical dependency, and teen pregnancy. It has been proposed that healthcare professionals teach core resiliency factors to promote healthy behaviors for this vulnerable population.

Children of addicted parents are the highest risk group of children to become alcohol and drug abusers because of both genetic and family environment factors.

Twenty-two percent of the combined sample identified themselves as a child of an alcoholic. This is consistent with current estimates of children of parental alcoholics, which is calculated to be 22%. In another recent study among 595 African American boys age 13 to 17 years, identified that 23% of the participating teens were COAs. The National Association of Children...

The objective of this study in Canada was to examine the effects of sexual abuse on substance use patients’ presentation and course in treatment.
Consecutive admissions to an addictions service were assessed at intake and six-month follow-up. Assessments evaluated socio-demographic and psychiatric characteristics, addiction severity, and physical and/or sexual abuse histories.

Upon entering treatment, 23% reported prior sexual abuse with or without physical abuse.

Patients with a sexual abuse history had higher rates of psychological problems, stronger family histories of substance use disorders, and more impaired family relationships.
At six months, there were no differences between patients with and without sexual abuse histories in their response to treatment, or their utilization ...

Researchers find ‘broad spectrum’ antiviral that fights multitude of viruses
By Enrique Rivero
February 01, 2010
Compound could be used against HIV-1, Nipah, Ebola and other deadly viruses
Viruses are insidious creatures. They differ from each other in many ways, and they can mutate — at times seemingly at will, as with HIV — to resist a host of weapons fired at them. Complicating matters further is that new viruses are constantly emerging.

One potential weapon is a small-molecule “broad spectrum” antiviral that will fight a host of viruses by attacking them through some feature common to an entire class of viruses. For example, there are two categories of viruses: lipid-enveloped and non-enveloped. Enveloped viruses are surrounded by a membrane that in effect ...

Study solves puzzle that eluded scientists for 20 years
* Finding should help development of new HIV/AIDS medicines
* Allows scientists to see how Merck and Gilead drugs work
LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Scientists say they have solved a crucial puzzle about the AIDS virus after 20 years of research and that their findings could lead to better treatments for HIV.
British and U.S. researchers said they had grown a crystal that enabled them to see the structure of an enzyme called integrase, which is found in retroviruses like HIV and is a target for some of the newest HIV medicines.

The 4-foot, 3-inch actress had various health problems following a mild heart attack she suffered late last year.
Rubinstein will be remembered by gays for being one of the first celebrities to lend her name and face to an HIV/AIDS public awareness campaign aimed at gay men. In a series of billboards and posters that blanketed Los Angeles in the mid ’80s, Rubinstein portrayed “Mother,” a sweet maternal figure who urged her “sons” to play safe.
Man oh man things have gotten hectic busy. I can only think of a few time-limited periods of time where I’ve had so much to do.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s all good. As grammatically incorrect that is, at least according to my spell check.
I mark my tenth year on disability and it’s been a bumpy ride. I’ve fastened my seat belt and I’m getting ready for an entirely new one.

During time, especially with all the recovery shit I’m doing, I’ve realized that I am a risk junkie. I like risk. I like to terrify myse...
