Early treatment for women with alcohol addiction (EWA) reduces mortality: a randomized controlled trial with long-term register follow-up.Gjestad R., Franck J., Lindberg S. et al. Request reprint Alcohol and Alcoholism: 2011, 46(2), p. 170–176.Compared to usual treatment, over the next 27 years introduction of a comprehensively serviced female-only alcohol treatment unit in Sweden substantially extended the lives of its patients – a uniquely convincing demonstration that improving treatment can save lives.Summary Alarmed by rising numbers of alcohol dependent women and their high death rate, in the 1980s Sweden established a female-only unit at a hospital alcohol treatment centre in the capital Stockholm.
Image via WikipediaThe effects of Alcoholics Anonymous on women returning from prisonThis new research is the first of its kind to analyze the effects of Alcoholics Anonymous attendance in incarcerated women and its effectsThe effects of alcohol abuse, as well as recovery from it, have been intensely studied. However, incarcerated women have remained an extremely understudied population despite steadily increasing in recent decades. One of the main ways to help individuals (as well as prisoners) with their recovery is through a 12-step program like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).A new study released in the March 2011 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, which is currently available at Early View, explores that subject in detail and found that AA attendance of at least once...

By David BoazPeople worry a lot about declining moral values in our modern world. Commenter Evan at econlog offers a different perspective on that, in a vigorous debate about Bryan Caplan’s claim that average people today have more material comforts than George Vanderbilt, the builder of Biltmore, had:
One thing I haven’t heard anyone address yet is moral progress. The values of earlier time periods were sickeningly depraved. One reason I’d never want to have been born in the past, rather than today, even if my past status would have been higher, is that I enjoy being the kind of person who doesn’t burn witches, own slaves, participate in pogroms, or bash gays. I think if you asked most poor people if they’d rather be a wealthy slaveowner in the past, they&#8...

With President Obama’s recent nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court, conservatives are busy trying to find some dirt on Kagan that will sully the nomination. The best (or worst, I guess) they can come up with are Kagan’s days as the dean of Harvard Law School. In 2004, Kagan kicked Pentagon recruiters off of campus because of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy that prohibits openly gay citizens to enter the armed forces. After the government threatened to pull federal funding from Harvard, Kagan repealed her ban.
The Defense Authorization bill is going though the Senate and the House Armed Services Committees, and The Services Members Legal Defense Network (SLDN) is urging President Obama to include a repeal of “Don’t...

This article presents the results of a qualitative study on lesbians’ recovery from addiction. The study involved semi-structured interviews with 20 lesbians in recovery from addiction and was analyzed using grounded theory method.
The central theme that emerged was self-acceptance, both as a lesbian and as a recovering alcoholic/addict, with considerable interaction between the two.
Categories that contributed to this theme were

learning to recover,
relationships with other people, and
relationship with something bigger than self.

The discussion addresses how this information can be used to assist lesbians trying to recover from addiction.

There appears to be yet another reason to scrutinize clinical trials - exclusion of lesbians and gay men from clinical trials in the US, particularly those with sexual function as an end point, according to an analysis that was published in the letters section of The New England Journal of Medicine.
A search using the terms “couples,” “erectile dysfunction,” and “hypoactive” (related to hypoactive sexual disorder), yielded 243 studies, of which 37, or 15 percent, had explicit exclusionary language. The results indicated that industry-sponsored trials, multi-region trials (according to census definitions), and Phase III trials were the most likely to exclude lesbians and gay men, according to researchers at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
As hard as it is to imagine the party of George Bush and Karl Rove transitioning into cheerleaders at a gay pride parade, it looks like we’re headed there. A recent Gallup poll shows that a majority of Americans favor openly gay and lesbian soldiers in the military. And it’s not a slim majority, either.
