Science is put in the dock, so it seems. Experts are under attack, there is public agitation on the internet. Yet we cherish expertise as never before, and cite expert sources whenever they suit us. Are we friends, or enemies, or both? [...] This symposium looks at the dynamic role of expertise in our society. How should we understand the notion of expertise? What operates as credible expertise, and when? Is scientific expertise overrated, and are other forms of expertise too easily dismissed? Or is it precisely the other way around?

Score one for the usefulness of facebook in science. In January and February, a group of scientists, led by Dr. Brian Sidlauskas, assistant professor of fisheries at Oregon State University (OSU), had been conducting the first ichthyological survey on Guyana’s Cuyuni River. The purpose of the study was to find out which species of fish live in the Cuyuni and get a good estimate of their abundance. After two weeks of fishing, the team had more than 5.000 specimens in their nets. But then trouble came:

We’ve all heard the argument that a subject under torture—or whatever this week’s euphemism is—may begin fabricating whatever they believe the interrogator wants to hear just to get the agony to stop. Now neuroscientists are suggesting that inflicting too much pain and stress on a subject may not just induce them to lie; it may cause them to lose track of what’s true and false altogether:
Fact One: To recall information stored in the brain, you must activate a number of areas, especially the prefrontal cortex (site of intentionality) and hippocampus (the door to long-term memory storage). Fact Two: Stress such as that caused by torture releases the hormone cortisol, which can impair cognitive function, including that of the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Studies...

Hey everyone,
Just a quick announcement. Brandon Brown, colleague at NCNM and all-around fantastic guy, has written a fascinating article that dips into the cosmology of this time of year. Here’s an excerpt:
“Here is my translation of the text from the YiJing for Hexagram 19.
《臨》元亨，利貞。至于八月有凶。
Successful, Benefitial. As for the 8th month (august) it is ominous.
《彖》 曰：《臨》，剛浸而長，說而順，剛中而應。大「亨」以正、天之道也。「至于八月有凶」、消不久也。
Gradually firm and enduring, speaking with direction, responding with a firm center. Big success with correctness, this is the way of Heaven. Ominous challenges will soon disappear.

《象》曰：澤上有地，《臨》。君子以...

Compared to five years ago, there is a lot of great science on the web, most of it free. New Scientist is one of the best general science publications dand comes from the UK (much like the US-based Science News). While each have subscriber-only Premium Content, there is quite a lot of free access material, including some great videos on New Scientist. As part of a year-end wrap up New Scientist just posted their five most popular videos. Here they are. If you always wanted to see a human egg ovulate, here's your chance (you have to wait to get to #1):

At the beginning of the last century, Dr. Wilhelm Fliess noticed identical rhythms in the case histories of his patients. He observed active and passive phases in the physical, emotional and mental aspects of humans. From these observations he derived the principle of the biorhythms: The physical curve with its cycle of 23 days, the emotional curve with 28 days and the mental curve with 33 days.

if coding to europe seems too far-fetched, matlab today released their twice annual competition. you have a week to optimally solve the peg-jumping problem with the leanest code. the winners get bragging rights, and maybe a coffee mug. it’s not news that scientists aren’t all linguists. but that ain’t no excuse for the nominal slop that pervades biological appelation. perhaps the most notorious of cases, and the subject of today’s exposé, begins in the 1920s: flappers were a dime a dozen, histologists were still arguing over the neuron doctrine, and a forty-something [...] (Source: bohemianscientist)

This is not specifically for psychologists, but for those with a general interest in science. New Scientist Magazine has been keeping “readers up to date with the latest science and technology news from around the world” since 1956. The accompanying website which showcases highlights from the magazine (and obviously offers online and print subscriptions) also provides a number of unique additional services, one of which is their podcast page. The podcasts usually involve special guests talking about their areas of expertise, but also involve discussion of recent news and events. Light entertainment and discussion fodder for those with a general love of science. (Source: PsychSplash)
