This may give new meaning to the notion of playing ball. Hoping to entice doctors to prescribe more meds, Novartis assembled a star-studded line up of athletes to pitch its drugs at dinners between 2006 and 2009. Among them: baseball Hall of Famers Bob Gibson and Johnny Bench, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning and former New York Knicks forward Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier.
As you might imagine, the athletes gave short speeches, answered questions about their careers, signed memorabilia and posed for photos. Novartis reps later brought the photos when they called on the docs. In all, the drugmaker paid $3.6 million in fees to 150 top former and current sports figures - from $8,000 to $35,000 an appearance, according to The Washington Times.
Interestingly, the events were used to...

We’ve got one more thing to add to our 6 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do With Your Placenta: You can send Mel Gibson into a career-ruining rage. Apparently, during a placenta-planting ceremony, the gardener made conversation with Oksana Grigorieva (Gibson’s now estranged baby-mama), who smiled at him. Mel assumed that Oksana was having an affair with the gardener, and we all know what happened next.
Way to go, Mel. Taking an already weird ceremony and infecting it with your crazy. We hope that buried placenta haunts you, Mad Max.

Mel Gibson Takes His Anger Out on Nature

Mel Gibson is now not just an enemy of humankind, he’s started abusing the plant world as well. On Wednesday, the aggressive actor was questioned by social services, and took out his anger on a nearby tree. But don’t worry — the tree wasn’t going to stand for that bullshit. (It claims it did nothing to provoke the actor.) Mel apparently injured his hand “quite badly,” according to a friend. When nature turns against you, it’s probably time to back down.
He’d better watch out, or those huge, walking trees from Lord of the Rings are going to come after his sorry ass.

Mel Gibson, Bipolar Disorder and Alcohol

As Mel Gibson’s voicemails to his ex-girlfriend continue to be leaked to the Internet this week, many media outlets are asking questions about Mel Gibson’s mental health. That’s no wonder — the voicemails are laced with profanity, racial epithets, and threats. In a 2008 documentary, Acting Class of 1977, he first talked about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
But are the rants to his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva related to a possible mental health diagnosis? Alcohol? Or something else?
It’s not easy to answer this question, because nobody except Mel Gibson, 54, and his doctors know. All we can do is speculate, based upon observations of his reactions, tone and behavior as recorded in the voicemails that are publicly available. So let’s take a loo...

The Right Brain responds:
Normally I wouldn’t give a “sheet” about a product like this, but after doing a little research I’m going to say that while hair sheets might be a gimmick, it’s not necessarily a bad one.

I am applauded and criticized for my comments about President Obama's rescission of the Bush "alternative method" executive order over at Belief Net--from the version of the criticism I posted on the First Things blog, which contained slightly different language than I put here on the same topic. Thus, David Gibson wrote:Why didn't Obama say more about the promise of adult stem cells--and do something to promote that promise? He said that the administration will support "promising research of all kinds, including groundbreaking work to convert ordinary human cells into ones that resemble embryonic stem cells." And yet his executive order yesterday also revoked Executive Order 13435 of June 20, 2007, which provided federal backing for promising adult stem cell research.
We are working on improving several sections of our website, especially our Resources section. It will look much better in a few days. Our first step has been to re-organize our Neuroscience Interview Series, and below you have how it looks today.
During the last 18 months I have had the fortune to interview over 15 cutting-edge neuroscientists and cognitive psychologists on their research and thoughts. Here are some of our favorite quotes (you can read the full interview notes by clicking on the links):

“Learning is physical. Learning means the modification, growth, and pruning of our neurons, connections–called synapses– and neuronal networks, through experience...When we do so, we are cultivating our own neuronal networks. We become our own gardeners”- Dr. James Zull, Pr...
