The 5 Types of Girlfriends You Need In Your Life

In her classic book, Gift from the Sea, Anne Morrow Lindbergh articulates the process of gathering girlfriends. She writes,
“I shall ask into my shell only those friends with whom I can be completely honest. I find I am shedding hypocrisy in human relationships. What a rest that will be! The most exhausting thing in life, I have discovered, is being insincere.”
Girlfriends are as unique as the shells Lindbergh describes in her pages. Some have the gift of empathy and compassion, while others challenge us in ways that lead to growth; some friends listen, while others dole out smart advice. Women need different kinds of friendships at different points in their lives. I have compiled these five types of girlfriends, drawing from the examples in Robert Wick’s book, Bounce: Living the Res...

After months of contentious debate, the Massachusetts legislature reached accord on a state budget last night, but the many provisions failed to include a long-standing effort to repeal the 2008 law that bans drug and device makers from giving gifts to docs. And the budget also failed to overturn a Massachusetts ban on coupons - the only such state ban in the country (read the budget).
The effort to repeal the gift ban had passed the House just two months ago in a bipartisan, 128-to-22 vote that reflected heavy lobbying by drugmakers and biotechs, which argued the law robbed the state of revenue from two medical conventions that held their events elsewhere. However, local restaurants also claimed a drop in business could be traced to the ban (see here).
However, their argument lost credibi...

Last month, the Massachusetts House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to repeal a 2008 law that bans drug and device makers from giving gifts to docs. The law, which you can see here and here, was seen as a way to limit undue industry influence over medical practice.
But the ban has upset doctors, and pitted various consumer and patient groups against the state’s restauranteurs and drug and device makers ever since. Those in favor of repeal argue the ban stifled business seeking to expand in Massachusetts and robbed the state of revenue from two medical conventions that held their events elsewhere (back story).
“I think we acted in haste,” state legislator James Miceli, who voted in favor of the ban originally but recently voted to overturn the law, recently told WB...

Description
The chapters of the book are organized by strengths that can be developed in a child. There is a short discussion of the importance of each strength, and then the book offers simple activities that parents do with their child-often in just a few minutes-to help develop them. Throughout the book strikes a positive note, stressing things that parents can do themselves to encourage and support their child rather than things they should discourage or avoid.….more info

Once again, Maryland lawmakers are considering legislation that would ban drug and device makers from giving gifts to docs and other healthcare providers. The move comes after a sensational scandal in which a Baltimore cardiologist was allegedly influenced by Abbott Laboratories to perform numerous unnecessary stent procedures (see this and this about the parties at his house).
Such laws already exist in Vermont and Massachusetts (read here and here), where payments to docs must also be disclosed. However, the bills caused considerable controversy, pitting drugmakers, doctors and restauranteurs against consumer and patient advocacy groups. Most likely, such a battle will play out in Maryland, as well.
Maryland has considered this sort of legislation before, but without any results, as The...

Here’s an appropriate post for New Year’s Eve!
How to organize your life!
So that everything that happens in 2011 will fit into a nice, neat category.
Sort of.
My only resolution this year is to become more organized in the way I work and live so that work and life are less on my mind during the times that I’m supposed to be chilling with the kids or hanging with friends.
I hereby declare that I am guilty of the perspective of just getting through something to get to the other side, where things will be peaceful. I’m constantly wishing for a date in the nearby future, where the specific problems and complications of today won’t be there.
But that attitude robs me of so many teaching moments of today.

Thus, next year, I am going to try my best to be as organiz...

What would YOU do for someone you loved?
I’d do just about anything.
It’s true – in fact it’s my greatest weakness.
I struggle to set boundaries. I put myself last. And quite frankly, I enjoy ignoring my own untended messes in order to help others clean theirs, leaving my own life in occasional (okay, steady) disarray.
But guess what? Loving to help is also my greatest strength (and yours too).
You have an unlimited capacity to give.
Though, many people don’t recognize this capacity. They fear that they don’t have enough to give. That they’re not important enough to change anyone’s life.
They are wrong.
Random Acts Of Kindness

If you don’t practice, and understand, the simple power of a random act of kindness, then you are setting limits on your life. T...

It’s that time of the year again — the time where gift-giving is a part of many people’s holiday rituals. While we don’t think twice about buying little gifts for close friends and family, sometimes it gives us pause to consider giving a gift to our therapist. Here’s a relationship with a professional that we see once a week, and yet it is a professional relationship (even if it doesn’t always feel that way).
What should you do? Should you exchange a little gift with your therapist?
Of course, before you do anything, you and your therapist should talk about exchanging gifts (especially if you don’t know your therapist’s policy). Some therapists are okay with it — as long as the gifts are small — while others have a strict, &#8220...

That said, I think it’s less about what you suggest to your family, and more about how you suggest it. Still, there’s no way that everyone is going to be pleased and happy every year, content with the knowledge that their idea is the best idea. So do what you can, in the most diplomatic way possible.
Dear Victor:
Christmas is coming, which for me means major stress about a particular family-related issue. I have a huge immediate family, and everyone has their own ideas about how we should handle Christmas gift-giving. These differences cause major arguments, underlying resentments, and even serious rifts. Some family members think that everyone should buy a gift for everyone else (despite the fact that there are dozens of us, and as many different budgets). Others think they should only have to buy Christmas presents for those family members to whom they’re really close. Still others are adamant that each gift be incredibly special and personalized, even if you only see the recipient once a year. (No iPods or coffee grinders allowed.) And, get this: Some of my adult family member...

We’re not going to pretend to understand people who camp out in front of big box stores days before Thanksgiving (and completely miss Thanksgiving dinner) in advance of all the Black Friday sales. But we’re very glad Black Friday’s almost here, because we’re really tired of seeing all those commercials telling us to leave our warm, cozy beds in the middle of the night in order to embrace the true meaning of the holidays and buy a bunch of crap no one really needs. The folks over at The Daily Beast were kind enough to put together a handy slideshow of some of the major Black Friday sales and opening hours. And we’re giving you our honest take on them:
Some Sam’s Club stores will open on Friday at 5 a.m. Why so late?

Keeping track of your cash, coins, and credit cards seems like something you should learn how to do in high school, but some of us still haven’t mastered the art of organizing our wallets. If you ever find yourself digging through crumpled receipts or wishing you hadn’t left certain cards at home, check out these tips from LearnVest. (And check out LearnVest’s original post for more details and a peek into Learnvest CEO Alexa von Tobel’s personal wallet.)

What to keep in your wallet:

Credit Card – LearnVest suggests having two credit cards in your name: One for regular use, another for emergency use only. Keep the emergency card tucked away at home, and keep the other in your wallet at all times.
Cash – The key here is not too much, not too little. Between $25...

You can feel it in the air – it’s almost the weekend. And there are a lot of things we want to get done in the next two days:

Get in some personal TLC time.
Whether this means having an orgasm (solo or not) or getting a massage, it’s going to be all about us at some point this weekend.

Read.
The weather is perfect for just sitting outside with an iced tea and getting caught up in a story. An added bonus? Reading will boost our brain power.

Sample some fancy cheeses.
It’s been a while since we took a trip to the local fromagerie (we took French in college, no big deal) to buy some cheese we can’t afford. But it’s totally worth it, because dairy could reduce our risk of heart disease.

Rent a movie.
Going to the movies nowadays will set you back quite a ...

Father’s Day is fast approaching (Sunday, June 20). If you’re a fan of e-cards because they’re eco-friendly, cheap (read: free), and pitch-perfect for procrastinators, you should at least pick the right one for dear ol’ Dad. Avoid the risk of sentimentality by sending the Daddy (or Sugar Daddy) in your life an e-missive from Someecards. We think they’re hilarious, and we’re pretty sure Pops will agree.

Blisstree announced our first giveaway on Monday (see below for details) – remember to leave a comment by tonight at 9 p.m. ET for a chance to win!

Look! It’s our very first reader giveaway since we launched! (But it won’t be our last.)
And the sweet prizes come from a little Seattle-based coffee shop called Starbucks. Heard of it?
Right now, Starbucks buys 75 percent of all its coffee from responsibly grown, ethically traded sources, and the company aims to up that number to 100 percent by 2015. (Last year, Starbucks also bought 40 million pounds of Fair Trade Certified coffee, which means it purchases more Fair Trade Certified coffee than anyone else in the world.)
Pretty cool, huh? So Blisstree partnered with Starbucks to give a little something back to our readers.

Yesterday I debated Steve DiFillippo, owner of Davio's and Avila's restaurants, on the WGBH program Greater Boston, hosted by Emily Rooney. The topic? The effect of the Massachusetts Gift Ban law on area restaurants. On one level, it was a friendly debate on the economic impact of the law on those restaurants that depend on drug company sponsored dinners for a chunk of their income. You can watch the debate here. Please don't comment on my bad hair day.But on another level, this is a larger and more worrisome issue, which is the trickle-down effect of deceptive marketing practices on the economy, such that very good people unwittingly help to perpetrate deceptive marketing practices. When you do these news shows you arrive a half hour early and are greeted by the producer, who brings you to ...

Equals 3 hours and 55 minutes – loads of time and time to spare. It was a definite possibility three months ago so I jumped at the chance – we prepared just in case.
An ancient saying states that just as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend to show rage or worthy purpose. What could this mean? Could anger be an emotion that reveals hidden truths about a person?
In her classic book, The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron elaborates on the ability of anger to disclose concealed aspects of a person’s direction and purpose in life. One needs to translate the message that anger is sending. It is trying to bring something to the light to be looked at and examined. Usually one tries to conceal or bury anger, feeling the social restraints and consequences. While sensitivity to not hurt others is valid, an individual’s feeling of anger needs private examination. Anger must not master us, but it can become a tool for self-revelation...

We're a little over a week into the New Year, and in a little over a month it will be Valentine's Day, time to think about what I'm going to give my sweetheart of 31 years, and time to drop a few hints as to what I might like from him.I was visiting a site that featured gift baskets, and have to admit I was torn between Chocolate and Cheese. How do I decide which one appeals to me the most? When I read the description, if my mouth is watering by the end, it's probably a good choice. I loved the big Chocolate Lovers Signature Chocolate Collection gift basket (pictured), and promise I'd take my time eating it (I am a Nutritionist after all;-). The other that caught my eye was the Cheese Platter Assortment. One of the cheese selections includes a nice international selection of Havarti cheese...

By Bob DeMarco
I believe many Alzheimer's caregivers are like me on this one.

I try to buy my mother the things she liked before she started suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Granted she doesn't show the same enthusiasm for the gifts like she did in days gone by. This can be disconcerting.

I like to buy her flowers and I do so every week. Wonder why I didn't do that for my x-wife? Hmm, file that away for future reference.

Sometimes when I give the flowers to my mother she says thank you, some times she doesn't. Sometimes she looks very happy, sometimes she doesn't.

And now the story begins.

Often she will take long stem flowers and start hacking away at them ...

It’s the usual rigmarole, or rather it isn’t - a variation on a theme. I’ve not visited the Bird shop for a couple of years, so I am quite delighted on Christmas Day. The boys went there, with their Dad. It was as much an exercise in perspective taking as gift buying, more or less one and the same, although Dad footed the bill - the value of money is still a work in progress. It’s a whole 24 hours later and there they all are, the most extraordinary collection of peculiar shaped items - gift wrapped. I’d understand if each one was the same as it’s fellows, uniform in shape, or size, but they’re not. If I had chosen something three foot long, the shape of a lollipop, I’d remember what was inside. Nor could I forget something heavy, like an upside down umbrella. There aren’...

We know as Alzheimer's develops a person losses their ability to remember. Do we know for certain that they lose their ability to feel?By Bob DeMarco

I read several stories on the Internet about Alzheimer's caregivers and gifts to Alzheimer's sufferers.

It appears some Alzheimer's caregivers decide not to gift. Their reasoning is easy to understand, they believe the person suffering from Alzheimer's won't remember the gift, or won't appreciate the gift like they did in days gone by. So why bother?

I believe, as many of you know, that there is more going on in the brain of someone suffering from Alzheimer's than might be apparent on the surface.

How do you know for certain that the person suffering from Alzheimer's won't appreciate a gift? How do you know for certain that it doesn't ...

This will not be a great Christmas for many families, due to another holiday season with the economy still in shambles. That is, if you believe that Christmas should be measured in the amount of gifts you give (or receive). And while most of us wouldn’t say we believe the number of gifts we give to our children is important, many still rely on quantity acting as some sort of indicator of parental worthiness.
Psych Central writers have written before on this topic, doing Christmas on a budget and providing answers to people who believe simplifying during the holidays is just not possible. It is. And you should always set a budget for gift purchases every year (for all occasions, not just Christmas).
“But what if that budget this year is smaller than in years past? Won’t m...

"The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry is a story familiar to many of us that tells a tale of giving and receiving when economic times are rough. In the present economy this classic story, written between 1903 and 1910, featuring a young couple struggling to get started, seems even more appropriate this year. The love and wisdom in the story is what Christmas is really all about. The glitz of the holiday marketing and frantic spending that we have today makes it more like a materialistic, greed oriented time for stores to boost sales. But, the real meaning of Christmas and of giving is in the thoughtful, caring, self-sacrificing things, as the characters in the story show us. Here is O. Henry's beautiful short story reprinted in full. "The Gift of the Magi" "One dollar and eighty-...

1. Klean Kanteen Water Bottles. Staying hydrated is important for the breastfeeding mother but remembering to drink enough water can be difficult for the busy new mom. It helps to keep water beside the nursing chair and by the bed. Make it easier for the new mother with one or more of these Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel Colored Water Bottles. I like Klean Kanteen because the bottles are made from food grade stainless steel that is non-leaching, toxin-free and BPA-free. Over on Wootkids they have this today -- Tyco Terrainiac RC Vehicle. Good deal? Can't answer that for you.

Last year, Woot had those fleece wrap around ear muffs on the website. They offered them for 5 bucks. I bought five and used them as an extra stocking stuffer. They were also a good cheap gift to use in a pinch, or to let someone know you care (well, care enough to give em a gift, but not enough to go for the Kindle). Its the thought that counts --right?

The fleece ear muffs received excellent reviews. Me? I wouldn't know. Its warm down here in...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
Before you haul yourself to the shopping mall for the American ritual known as Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving, when retail merchants leap out of the red ink and into the black), consider giving yourself a little holiday gift
I’m not saying that just because of the recession. Or because in 1989 I ventured on to the Houston freeway system on the day after Thanksgiving and developed a traffic phobia that persists to this day.
Gifts can hurt…

My sister appreciated all of the advice on what to include in a baby gift registry. She took the list of items and registered at both Babies R Us and Target. When she finished her Babies R Us registry, the store gave her coupons for breastfeeding-related items! When she finished her Target registry, the store gave her coupons for formula. Shame on Target! And what’s worse? Not knowing about the formula coupons, I happened to be at Target and bought some hair bands for my older girls to celebrate the start of the school year. The hair bands were sold in the baby section, and when I paid for them, with my receipt I got — you guessed it — a coupon for formula! Double foul, Target!
Needless to say, I wasn’t about to do my baby gift shopping at Target.

Little noticed in the recently enacted credit card bill was a provision prohibiting retailers and financial institutions from issuing gift cards that expired with a set time, except under certain circumstances. While card issuers had been using expiration dates to estimate and manage their liabilities, many States had been “collecting” the value of these unused cards as “abandoned property”, as discussed in today’s Wall Street Journal.
Some states have even been going after cards with no expiration date, arguing that if you leave that gift card sitting around your house or in your wallet for too long, then you’ve abandoned. What’s next, funds sitting unused in your bank account will next be considered abandoned. The States that require unused gift cards, or unused porti...

More on the evolving story about ADHD biology and reward. Rather than ADHD appearing as a fixed deficit in executive function, increasing evidence suggests that children (and adults) with ADHD behaviors are showing impulsivity mainly in non-reward situations. In this latest study from Germany, 8-13 year old boys diagnosed with ADHD showed a much greater ability to inhibit impulsive behavior on the go/no-go test if rewards- monetary or social were involved. The differences were striking between the two groups...whereas only 12.5% of the control group slowed down their behaviors and improved their responses in the control group, 43.8% of the ADHD group slowed down their behaviors and exhibited fewer false alarm rates. The implications for findings such as this are significant - if making exte...

What do mothers want this Mother’s Day? With the recession, I am guessing that gifts of time and service top the list! Such gifts often mean more than those that cost a lot of money anyway! Photo courtesy of A.D.A. Ana Duncan Art and J.G. WhitnerPersonally (and I will be forwarding this post to my husband!) I want a hot bath and time to myself to read a book. Alone time is at a premium for me with three kids including a 9-month-old, and a hot bath and a good book would go a long way to restoring my spirit! I do not like to be away from my baby — that’s not relaxing to me — so a bubble bath provides the perfect escape for an hour or more!
Other ideas for gifts of time or service:

Make a Diabetes Donation in Honor of Mom

If you’re looking for a great Mother’s Day gift, consider giving money to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The ADA offers several different types of giving initiatives, including honor gifts, stocks, and accessories. If your mom or someone close to her has diabetes, what better way to show them you care than by giving money toward a cure. It’s better than flowers! (But it’s always a good idea to get them anyway!)

If giving a gift in honor of your mom, don’t forget to write out your reasons for doing so in a card. When your mom is able to understand why it was important for you to do that, she’ll appreciate the gift all the more.

A few readers asked if I would write out the content of my videos in accompanying text. Here you go:

Friendships are a lot like marriages in that some are healthy and some are toxic, or unhealthy. But you sound pretty ridiculous explaining to people why you are sad: “Man, I just broke up with a friend, and it’s really painful.” But that is, in essence, what you are doing, and it needs to be treated the same way as a romantic relationship or marriage ending: with a lot of support and nurturing. As friendships develop and evolve, some don’t have all the right ingredients to last. So it’s right and natural that some break. But that period after the split is so awkward, for both people: the breaker-upper, or the breaker-uppee. I’ve sat in both seats.

Less than a week ago, our new President, Barack Obama, helped push the Economic Stimulus Bill through the Senate with the hopes that it would inspire economic growth and get out economy back on track. Now the debate seems to be whether the appropriations in the bill will have a stimulative effect. I have my doubts, but I hope for the best. Luckily, we don’t have to rely on the government to do all of the work - and I do mean “luckily”. Private citizens and corporate entities can do their part to stimulate the economy as well.
One such company that is taking an active role in stimulating the economy - perhaps with a hint of satire is Dentek. Dentek, the widely known dental product manufacturer is currently running an Economic Stimulus Sweepstakes at their website(Dentek.c...

Thank you
Since the season of gifts and giving recently passed, I guess I’m more aware that “thank you” and thank you notes (even e-mails) have become a lost art or lost courtesy. When we received gifts, or even were shown acts of kindness and consideration, my mom had us children write thank you notes.
Each year, the day after Christmas, Mother had us four children sit at the dining table and write notes to whomever had given us gifts. Even as Mother was entering ther Alzheimer’s years, she’d still remind me that we had to write thank you notes when someone gave her a gift or did a favor. This became so ingrained in me, it’s become almost automatic that I think, “I must write a thank you note.” And I look for pretty note paper for th...

Here’s some great news to start your day. The “Joslin Diabetes Center today announced it has received a $1 million gift from the Thomas Beatson Jr. Foundation to support Type 1 diabetes research.”
Doesn’t that just bring a smile to your face? Mr. Beatson has had Type 1 diabetes for over 50 years. Wouldn’t it be great if his donation was just the incentive to put research over the mark in reaching a cure?
This is fabulous news, of course, but you know that every little bit truly adds up. So even if you’ve got $10 here and there, and we all have $10, it can add up to a lot.
Still, thank you Mr. Beatson!

I have a small confession to make about autism. When it comes to birthdays and holidays my children do not exchange gifts. My daughters often make cards and fashion presents at such times, unprompted and generally unappreciated, but even persuading the boys write their own names on a shop bought card, has proved a challenge. This fact dawns upon me one morning. I realize that we have spent our time concentrating on receiving a gift graciously, because this is a social issue with dire consequences. Whilst there can me many humiliating experiences in life, when a gift is firstly ignored, later rejected and later still, destroyed, we are aware of the hurt this causes to the giver. It effectively doubles the pain. The receiver fails to behave appropriately, the giver is mystified. In some Amer...

Still need a present for Christmas? Don’t forget about the American Diabetes Association’s holiday catalog. There are many great gifts that also help fund a cure for diabetes.
You can buy stuff like this comfort candle, this digital photo ornament, and this graceful living perpetual calendar.
You can also give money to diabetes research in honor of someone you love. Get this certificate to show someone that you donated in honor of them. They are sure to appreciate it!
Why not benefit diabetes research this year while you celebrate the joyful season?

A commonly-asked question at this time of the year is, “Can I give my therapist a Christmas or holiday gift? What about just a card?”
The answer varies from therapist to therapist and from doctor to doctor.
Generally therapists seek to keep the relationship between a client and themselves a professional one, despite the emotional material often discussed in psychotherapy. The more the line blurs between “professional therapist” and “paid friend,” the more complicated the relationship becomes. So most therapists will seek to keep that line — what they call a boundary — clear and well-understood by both parties.
Some therapists will talk about the subject proactively, letting each client know ahead of time what their policy is regarding pres...

Zapi Makes the “O” List
While the economy is down in the dumps, and most of us are scaling back for the holidays, Violight, makers of toothbrush sanitizers are sure to have a Christmas they won’t soon forget. Why? Their best-selling toothbrush sanitizer, Zapi, was recently featured as one of Oprah’s “Favorite Things” for the holidays by O Magazine. With millions of readers around the world, and additional coverage by Good Morning America, the Zapi is getting some major press this holiday season.

Quick Look at the Zapi
The Zapi is an egg-shaped device that utilized UV rays to kill germs crawling all over your toothbrush in minutes. Just one tap on the power button each day is all it takes. It even comes in three colors: green, blue, and orange. This is ...

The day after Thanksgiving is the most important holiday before Christmas. It’s our signal to start shopping for holiday gifts!
But what do you give someone who is crazy about genetics?
Well, my friend, you came to the right store, if you need a gift for any of the following reasons:

The holidays! What better way to say Merry XX-Mas! (or Merry XY-Mas!)
Birthdays and anniversaries, graduate fellowships, employment, promotions, new discoveries, grant approval, postdoctoral work and all the major accomplishments in life!
Something for your boss; your boss’ boss; your professor; your department head and all the important people who can sign your papers!
Something for your laboratory head, technicians, the statisticians and programmers, and everyone who makes your life easier.

Reported in the Star:

More than 4,000 people, on the waiting list for the “Gift of Life” would have their wishes granted if only the organs of 7,000 who died in road accidents last year had been transplanted.
To get more Malaysians to donate organs, the Government has launched a media campaign costing RM2.4mil which started yesterday.
A new website has been set up, provide the public with the mechanics and details of organ donation and how one can pledge to be an organ donor. The public is also reminded not only to sign up as organ donors, but to inform family members about it.
Our Health Portal page has been updated with the new website. Note that it is still currently only in BM although there is an English version button present. Hopefully the English version will be set up soon.

People with diabetes are bracing themselves to smile graciously as they unwrap boxes of diarrhea-producing, blood sugar-raising "Sugar Free" cookies and tuck into dinners filled with diet-ruining high carb/low fat items prepared with love by friends and relatives who don't understand diabetes. There's still time to head off these kinds of disasters. If you are shopping for someone with diabetes, I hope this list of suggestions helps you choose an appropriate gift. If you are a person with diabetes, don't be shy about letting those who love you know what kinds gifts would be most appreciated--and what kinds of foods you can eat.SUGGESTED GIFTS1. A Pedometer.
One of the best baby gifts Nicole and I received was a donation in our honor to La Leche League by Tanya, Sinead, Andi, and Jennifer. I was touched by the thoughtful gift, and pleased that one of my favorite charities would benefit.

Many cord blood banks (including M.A.Z.E. Cord Blood Laboratories) offer gift registries for parents who choose to bank their baby’s cord blood. These registries are a great way for parents to get assistance with paying for this life-saving opportunity. As we have mentioned in the past, cord blood banking is expensive (even with M.A.Z.E. which is less expensive than most other banks). Gift registries allow parents to receive assistance with paying for the bank without having to actually ask for the money.
M.A.Z.E.’s registry works like this…
Once parents have registered to bank their infant’s cord blood, they can go online and register for the gift registry. Once they have registered, we will send an email announcement out to those friends and family membe...

The spirit of giving is the spirit of Christmas, and gifts of the heart mean the most. The thought and caring that the gift represents is the most treasured part of the gift. Caregivers give from the heart not just on Christmas, but every day of the year. The celebrated short story writer from the 20th century, O. Henry, wrote about gifts of the heart in his Christmas story, "The Gift of the Magi." The young lady and young man, newly married and struggling in poverty, each put special thought into a worthy gift for the other. The clever twist at the story's end, so typical of O. Henry, gives it a special meaning.Below is the short story, O. Henry's "Gift of the Magi."One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all. And sixty cents of it was in pennies. Pennies saved one and two at a time b...

It’s a task that is often fraught with stress, especially when you are trying to buy for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease. It’s difficult to think of what to buy them. You spend your time asking yourself “Is this what they would like?”, “Is this something they would need?”, and “Will they recognize and use this gift?”
I recently across this great article ‘Enhancing Life for the Older Adult with Alzheimer’s Disease or Other Dementias: Some Gift Ideas’ by Stephanie Zeman Rn MSN that might help in your gift buying process.
Stephanie suggests you choose a gift based on what stage the Alzheimer’s patient is a...

I like the concept behind the movie, Pay It Forward. Why not "Tech It Forward."Looking for a unique holiday gift? Why not buy and give an XO Laptop through the Give One Get One program. Take a moment and think about how much you use your computer and the power it has gives you to work, learn, think, communicate and so on . . .The computer and concept of getting compters in the hands of children around the world is the brainchild of Professor Nicholas Negroponte of MIT. You have options: giving one or more ($200 each one tax-deductible), give 1 and get 1 (still get the tax deduction for 1/2 the price) or give many and designate where they go in the world. For more information about the program and a review of the XO Laptop check out this NYT article, Laptop With a Mission Widens Its Audience...

I just got the diabetes bag I ordered only two days ago from Rickina at Stick Me Designs. It is even nicer than I expected it to be. I can stuff every possible diabetes supply I can think of into this bag and still get it shut. Here's a photo:Needles, pen, pen needles, insulin vial, meter, lancet, strips, even my handy dandy needle snipper, all fit in. And with all this stuff in the bag, it still closed:Rickina, who recently went through a diabetic pregnancy which made her realize the need for this kind of bag, makes these herself. I also sew, and I can tell you, her work is beautiful. You could also put your glucose in one of the zippered compartments, or your house keys wallet and money, for that matter. It would also be perfect for putting in a larger handbag or for when you travel and wa...

What is this? It is a shirt that detects the presence of wifi signals where ever you happen to be, and shows the strength of those signals on an animated emblem on the front of it, as you see here. Not only can you see whether wifi is available where ever you might be located, but everyone else who is nearby can also see it. The only sad thing about this is that it doesn't show whether the wifi signals are secured or free, but otherwise, this is the ultimate geek shirt!

I stumbled across this on The Wall Street Journal and was a tad puzzled. I'm Canadian (free health care) so this kind of thing is a slightly odd to me. Seems Pittsburg health insurer Highmark Inc is selling a Healthcare Visa Gift Card. It can be pre-loaded with any amount from $25 to $5,000 to cover elective surgery, contact lenses, gym memberships and even prescription co-payments.You can only get them online or by toll-free number and you can only use them at providers or merchants that Visa deems as health related. Oh and there's a $4.95 shipping and handling fee too.Highmark expects to sell "several hundred thousand" gift cards, mostly between $75 and $100, during the next year, Mr. Bellard said. Reserves are so low there's barely enough blood to last one full day at a time. LifeSouth Community Blood Centers reports about this emergency blood shortage on their website. "The blood supply stands at less than a one-day supply which has blood center officials very concerned," writes John David Larkin Nolen, LifeSouth's Medical Director. "All eligible residents are asked to give blood. Blood donations haven't kept pace with demand and we've had a very tight supply for the past few weeks. But today several patient situations involving children and adults facing life threatening medical conditions depleted the reserve supplies. The image that you see to the left (click on it to enlarge it) is the culmination of that effort. To thank me for my efforts, Ms. Clariond has given me 50 copies of this beautiful work of poetic and visual art for charitable purposes. In a gesture of paying forward and to the cause, I have decided to offer my own version of a "Translator's Limited Edition" of this work. Hearing this story about a Wisconsin family is one more affirmation of my signature. When it comes to diabetes and kidney problems, Lorna Burns Hager says her family is jinxed. Hager has diabetes and was born with one kidney. Her brother died from diabetes complications and kidney failure. Two of her four children were also born with one kidney and developed diabetes. Rough stuff.
This past Friday, Wisconsin's Governor Jim Doyle honored Hager with the Gift of Life medal of honor for donating her daughter Kelly's two kidneys after she died last year. Kelly was profoundly mentally disabled, and Hager is confident Kelly is livin...

Filed under: Thought for the DayI've been thinking a lot about this quote, offered by Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D and author of Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier:"individuals who approach life with an attitude that all of life is a gift will be more likely to find the good in bad life circumstances. They are more likely to move forward following a catastrophe. In fact, they may be more likely to label such an event a gift."Ever since I read these words in the August 2007 issue of The Oprah Magazine, I've been contemplating the value of finding something good in every bad life scenario. It's what I've done with cancer. I've convinced myself my disease was merely a bump in the road. Only a bump, though. I choose to focus on the joy, not the despair, that came with my c...

I ended my post with this statement: It seems a common thread -- the fact that cancer makes us all stronger in one way or another. It's one of the silver linings, I think. Cancer can be a gift. We just have to regard it as one and look hard for its hidden treasures. Two readers have since left comments indicating I must be crazy for thinking of cancer as a gift. Okay, do any of you want to help make an investment with me? Would you like to buy a house that I would turn in to a bed and breakfast? It is very cheap .. er, affordable .. because of one extra feature it has .. nesting vultures on the premises. Yes, indeed, it would be a fascinating place for bird watchers and nature lovers to visit, and I would love to host them, and I would love to be a proud steward of the black and turkey vultures who nest there (I have a soft place in my heart for vultures, after having met several tame turkey vultures in my life, and discovering that they actually are quite intelligent and inquisitive).

Besides, I could write a book about the vultures!
