It starts at a young age. Schools encourage it. Our families help define it. We begin our lives with the labels they give us like big brother, baby sister, only child. And as we get older, they just get more serious.
Sometimes the way we’re perceived such as the “good one,” the “bad one,” the “troubled one,” the “drama queen,” inevitably follow us throughout the rest of our life. Sometimes these seemingly harmless labels take on a life of their own. If we don’t achieve our own sense of self, they begin to define who we are. And we grasp on tight.
These lyrics from the Barenaked Ladies song What a Good Boy reminds me of the pressures they can have on us:

“When I was born they looked at me and said
What a good boy, what a sma...

We frequently hear about celebrities and what they do (or don’t) do in the gym, but what about real women? We’re far more interested in the accomplishments and challenges of real women who’ve made health and fitness a priority. So we’re starting “That Girl,” a column meant to celebrate women of all ages, shapes, sizes and athletic persuasions, from all over the country (and hopefully beyond). This week, we’re kicking it off with Jo Shott, a competitive runner and triathlete:
Meet:
Joanna (You can call me JO) Shott
Jacksonville, FL
I’m 32 years young.
Fitness/health accomplishment you are most proud of:
To this point, I’m most proud of walking onto the UNF cross country team in 2001 (never ran on a team before). I trained with the team for three...

Girl Scout Troop Talks Diabetes with Scott

I spent some time Sunday hanging out with a local Girl Scout troop that my friend leads. Some time ago she asked if I would be willing to come and talk about diabetes with them.
“I’ll talk diabetes with anyone – let’s do it”, I told her.
So I jumped into it with both feet. It was exciting and terrifying all at the same time. There’s something so amazing about watching young minds at work. It’s also scary, in that it doesn’t take much of a misstep for them to write you off and shut down.
This particular group of young ladies asked some incredible questions. I was so impressed at their curiosity about diabetes. I guess it makes sense, in that you hear about it almost everywhere. Many of them have friends and family members that li...

In her gutsy book, Think: Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed-Down World, attorney and national television legal analyst Lisa Bloom paints a dire picture:
The problem is not just about that 25 percent of young women who would rather be hot than smart; rather, it’s about a culture that actually makes that a rational choice: rewarding girls for looks over brains. And it’s about ALL of us, intelligent American females, ranging from girlhood to old age, who are dazzling ignorant about some critically important things.
An aggravating thing happened in the last generation. As girls started seriously kicking ass at every level of education (girls now out-perform boys in elementary, middle, and high schools; we graduate from college, professional, and graduate schools in greater ...

Recently I came across About The Girl, a site specialising in beautiful post-surgery lingerie and swimwear, established by another woman thriving after cancer, Amy Bath. Today, About the Girl opens its first showroom. To celebrate, I’ve asked Amy along to answer some questions, and there’s a very special offer for Bah! readers too. Read on!
SB: Hello, Amy, and welcome to Bah! to cancer. Can you tell us a little bit about how About The Girl came about?
AB: I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2007, and was treated with a lumpectomy followed by a mastectomy and as my lymph nodes were affected these were also removed. I then underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I finished my treatment feeling like I had been hit by a ten ton truck and started the long process of try...

A few weeks ago, the weirdest thing happened.
I walked into a crowded after-school hangout for young adults and my thirty something year old self suddenly felt as awkward and gawky as I was at thirteen. Where was my self-confidence? What happened to those twenty years of work on building my self-worth to replace those few years of embarrassment and shame?
All I could think of was how fast I wanted to get out of there.
Have you ever felt like that before? Have you ever wanted to change your perspective or redo a moment so you can feel better about the life you are living?
Thankfully, after I left, I picked up the pieces of my fragile self and again walked in the shoes of a happy and confident adult. But I wish I had read one of these posts sooner.
If you have had a shot to your self-esteem ...

When is psychotherapy, well, therapeutic? Is it any more therapeutic if your “therapist” starts taking off their clothes during your session?
A freelance computer programmer, Sarah White, has decided that anyone can do therapy online. And not only that, she does it while she disrobes, one piece of clothing at a time. Yes, I’m serious. She calls this “Naked Therapy.” No, I’m still not kidding (and neither, apparently, is Sarah White).
Be forewarned — a lot of the links in this article lead to websites with half-naked photos of a woman.
I suppose the hook here is obvious — someone peddling cam-girl soft porn under the guise of something that’s “therapeutic,” because they hold a notepad and take notes while disrobing.
So what a...

Pain in the Butt

Poop Dermatitis Linked to Fashionable Toilet Seats, Harsh Chemicals!

Jessica Alba – wedgy in edgy
Toilet seat dermatitis is one of those legendary conditions described in medical textbooks and seen in underdeveloped countries, but now we are seeing it in the most exclusive backsides in the States. Jessica, watch where you sit, you might get a poop rash!

One of culprits responsible for the butt condition are harsh cleaning chemicals and exotic wooden toilet seats — making a comeback as bathroom décor — especially seats covered with varnishes and paints. You can get a rash on your butt just looking at this picture! (Is that a cupholder?)

Most butt rash cases are fairly benign and easy to treat with topical steroids, but inflammation can persist...

A few days ago, I stood before the candy. I was having trouble making a decision on what I desired -- 3 Musketeers? Kit-Kat? The new Hershey's Drops? When I had, quite possibly, the oddest exchange in the history of my time as a pharmacist.
There I stood in awe of the sugary heaven before me, when a young mother, pushing a cart, walked down the aisle in which I was. A young girl, about 5-years old, stood in her cart staring at me. As they approached, the girl raised her hand and pointed one finger directly at me. In her best womanly accusatory tone, she exclaimed her one-word title for me, "PENIS!"
Her mother immediately turned red and lowered the child's pointing finger with her hand. I, taken aback, wasn't sure how to take the comment. Assuming the young girl was merely sharing with the ...

Watermelon is an amazing treat, and is packed with citrulline, a compound that relaxes blood vessels – just like the famous blue pills – researchers at the North Carolina State University have found. Who knew spitting seeds could be more than just a redneck contest, but actually excellent forep...

We fancy ourselves to be some smart, career-savvy ladies, but we were shocked to find the headline “Flirting Your Way To The Corner Office” among the highlighted stories on ForbesWoman this morning. The subtitle, “Are you ignoring one of your greatest career assets? A guide to professional flirtation” has us even more uncomfortable. This is so not politically correct.
The article quotes Nicole Williams, author of Girl on Top: Your Guide to Turning Dating Rules into Career Success, who pushes for women to wise up about using flirting as a tool for professional success. She thinks it’s naive to do otherwise, but recognizes that not everyone’s a big...

You say you’re an environmentalist. You use cloth bags when grocery shopping; your house is fitted with CFL light bulbs; and you drive a hybrid. (Hopefully not a Prius, though.)
But if you really want to get your hands dirty for the sake of saving the planet, here are 10 ways you can use Earth Week as an excuse to get active in your community.
If none of these opportunities are near where you live, check out Serve.org or Volunteermatch.org to find a worthy cause nearby.

You can teach Girl Scouts (grades two through six) how to lead greener lives, and help inspire the next generation to be as committed to saving the environment as you are.

Amid all the buzz surrounding yesterday’s release of “The Runaways,” a film starring Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning about the early days of girl rockers Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, you might be apt to forget about two other wildly awesome female musicians from the 1970s (and ’80s and 90s). Don’t.
They’re sisters (one’s got the voice, the other guitar skills); they’re from Seattle; they’ve sold 30 million records; and they kick some serious ass.

I don’t know about you, but for the longest time, I was afraid of my inner bitch.
In the old suppressed, sexist tradition of ‘you’re either a whore or a saint’, women are too often taught that we are either ‘nice’ or ‘bitches’ and never the twain shall meet.
So it’s not surprising that when I was growing up I felt it necessary to suppress any snarkiness. It was hard when what I really wanted to do was say something catty or roll my eyes or even admit out loud that I was so much hotter than Lisa, my high school nemesis.
Grave of Neda Agha Soltan

The young woman’s name is ندا آقا .سلطان Neda Agha Soltan.
She was a 26-year-old student. She’d studied religion and philosophy, but was most interested in music and travel.
On June 20, 2009 she was watching a protest with her music teacher. At 7:05 PM she was standing on Kargar Avenue at its intersection with Khosravi and Salehi Streets.
Although initial reports implicated a sniper on top of a building, other witnesses said Neda was shot by a Basij militiaman riding a motorcycle. A few minutes later, she died.
On the video a male voice says, “Neda, don’t be afraid. Neda, don’t be afraid.” And then, “Neda, stay with me. Neda, stay with me!”

The makers of an over-the-counter gender prediction test say their product, the IntelliGender, will let expecting moms know the sex of their baby as early as 10 weeks after conception.
It’s a simple urine test that’s based on the science that certain hormones found in the pregnant woman’s urine, when combined with a “proprietary mix of chemicals”, will react differently depending on whether the woman is carrying a boy or a girl.
Apparenly, within 10 minutes of taking the urine test, the specimen will turn green if it’s a boy, and orange if it’s a girl.
But IntelliGender co-founder Rebecca Griffin is quick to say that they do not guarantee 100% accuracy. The test, after all, is not a diagnostic tool.
For that, you need to wait for a sonog...

It has been widely reported that as far as the FDA is concerned it's the message not the medium when it comes to regulating pharmaceutical use of the Internet (see, for example, "A Conversation with the FDA Associate Commissioner for Public Affairs"). This is turning out not to be entirely accurate. In 14 recent warning letters, FDA challenged the conventional wisdom of consultants to the drug industry about application of the so-called "one-click rule" to Google Adwords. Clicking is unique to messages delivered via the Internet or other interactive media. The "one-click rule" states it's OK on an Rx product Web site to merely provide a link to the package insert or brief summary. The "rule" was an interpretation of FDA thinking by consultants to the drug industry and was never something the...

From being the ultimate Bond poster girl to speaking up about osteoporosis, actress Ursula Andress has come a long way.
Ursula Andress
Ms Andress, born in Swizterland in 1936, was one of the major sexy women and actresses of her time. If you look at her now, you’d hardly believe she’s in her 70s. But, despite taking good care of her body and her physical beauty, time has ravaged her bones, resulting in osteoporosis.
As a result of her diagnosis with osteoporosis, Ms Andress agreed to become a spokesperson for the disease, teaching women about the importance of osteoporosis prevention and treatment.
To do this, she became involved in the “Timeless Women Campaign ,” an undertaking of the International Osteoporosis Foundation .
According to the website, Ms Andress says...

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, it also takes a village — at best a supportive community, and at the least a few very good friends — to keep a person sane and happy. All of us need companionship, which is exactly why teenagers are texting their friends in the middle of dinner (TMI, BFF, OMG …), and why people who didn’t own a personal computer last year now have profiles on Facebook, MySpace, and other social networking sites.
Maybe the first trick to finding friends is to befriend ourselves, and to become comfortable with silence, because no one has the power to make us feel okay with ourselves but us. But, lest we stay quiet for too long, here are 10 techniques to meet new friends, which I think everyone can benefit from, because, as I learned ...

Pete Interviewed on Women With Adult ADHD in More Magazine
I’ve been quoted in an article on Women with Adult ADHD in More Magazine (the Canadian edition) in the Feb/March Issue p. 121-4 written by Zoe Kessler who has ADHD and talks about her and other women’s experience in living with Adult ADHD.
Title of the article is “Spinning Out Of Control. What happens when the A in ADHD stands for Adult? Finally a Guide for Grown-ups.” Unfortunately no web article, just the printed one. Excellent article, it’s on the newstands now, check it out.
Girls and Women with ADHD are less likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, since they more often have just the inattentive form of ADHD (90%) instead of the combined form that boys and men usually do (i...

On this episode they tackled the subject of mixing drugs and sex. They recounted this little story:
Some have gone to extreme measures to improve their sexual kick.
In 1987, a man injected cocaine into his penis before having sex with his girlfriend.
His erection didn’t subside for three days and nine days later gangrene began to set in, and he lost his legs, nine fingers and his penis.

All I can say is that I’ll never look at some in a wheelchair the same. Especially the man with no legs, well stumps at the knees, and no teeth, who sits at th...

The above headlines sound suspiciously similar to our good old women’s magazines — complete with the usual conversation on our bodies (unbelievably thin models? Check. Thin “regular” girls? Check), looks and men.
This is the latest issue of Seventeen, the largest teen magazine today, whose readership tops about 13 million monthly.

Below these “women’s magazine-friendly” headlines is “We’re in it together: Learn how you and your girls can help each other feel good about your bodies.” So right after you’re finished altering your body in record speed — “tone your whole body ...

It has long been FDA's position that no new guidance regarding pharmaceutical marketing via the Internet was necessary because the rules that apply to print and broadcast media also apply to the Internet.Recently, however, the FDA issued a little-noticed warning letter (click on image at left to read the relevant section) that addresses a specific Internet marketing ploy: branded banner ads that mention a product's indication and benefit without including fair balance (ie, risk information).Pharmaceutical marketers and online partners (eg Google) have often justified these types of ads by invoking the the so-called "one-click rule," which Jim Nail, CMO at TNS Media Intelligence/Cymfony, explains this way: "...there is no 'official' FDA one-click rule...there is a 'received precedent' that ...

Anita Rodriguez, vice president for organizational strategy at the southeast Girl Scouts chapter, said, “The bottom line for us is we do not discriminate and the Girl Scouts did not kick her out” but worked to find a solution.
Unfortunately, she said, the special needs troop that was tailored to the sedentary needs of the other three girls, including one with brittle bone disease, has disbanded after three meetings because parents and...

After 14-year-old Casey Reilly, who has Asperger’s, was excluded from week-long scouting trip, which prevented him from advancing in rank, his parents filed a lawsuit against the Pacific Palisades Boy Scout Troop 223—-more recently, in Wisconsin, after one visit to Girl Scout Brownie troop for girls with special needs in Oconomowoc, the troop’s leaders told 8-year-old Magi Klages’ parents not to bring her back. Magi is autistic and, after graduating from a Daisy troop, she wanted to continue with Brownies. A local Brownie troop with 22 girls was too overwhelming so her parents, Michele and Kevin Klages, decided to try the troop for special needs children.
A judge will hear arguments on whether charges should be brought against two parents who did not take their daughter to the doctor, choosing instead to pray for her treatment. The 11-year old girl had untreated diabetes, and was too weak to walk, talk, or drink. ~source
As someone with diabetes, I cannot imagine the horrible death this girl must have suffered. You know how you feel when your blood sugar gets really high? Imagine having it that way for a long time and not having anyone help you. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for prayer. But I think God puts healthcare workers on this earth so we can get help. The fact that these parents did not seek medical attention when their daugher became sicker and sicker is disgusting to me.

Fall is finally here in the Pac Northwest and with it, day after day of rain, rain, rain. Last fall I didn't have a video game system, mostly because I was too busy to pay much attention to the gaming world, but since purchasing my Nintendo Wii in May I not only have an exer-gaming console to distract me from the weather (and doing a bit of exercise this afternoon did help refocus my thoughts from work frustrations), I also have a plethora of gaming opportunities I can access by downloading old games (including several of my favorite games from the Nintendo 64) and purchasing a wide variety of games originally created for the Nintendo Gamecube.

What I've found, though, is that the brilliance of the Wii is also its biggest downfall: you have to get up off your heiney and actually move. Mo...

First comes the shock. In the (tongue-in-cheek) words of my friend, teacher and mentor the late James Tankard:
Cancer? Me? But I’m too special to get cancer.
People told me I was lucky — great doctors, good insurance, look at the bright side. People expected me to be positive and that’s when a disconnect happened.
Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954)
Why didn’t I feel lucky? Why didn’t I feel positive? Who was I now, anyway?
I used to be someone’s wife, but I didn’t feel like a woman anymore. I didn’t even feel human.
I pictured myself as some strange creature dragging around the house. I’d stare out the windows for a while, and then go back to bed.
No one warned me of the horror of cancer.
I felt like I was watching a movie, only...

These plants are succulents–sedum and cacti. They are a perfect choice for the West Texas climate because they thrive on neglect. They need very little water and they love to bake in the sun. If you ever unearth one of these plants, you’ll see their root system is very compact and shallow. Most of the plant is above the surface. Often times these plants become top heavy.
My husband took me to buy some plants today and I decided to plant a container of drought-resistant plants that will be more likely to survive the winter. I wanted something with some height and texture and my gaze fell upon the cactus. My husband hemmed and hawed over buying it because it is scarred about halfway down its trunk. Sometime, somewhere, this cactus was hurt and it will wear the mark forever.
But m...

You’ve heard it time and again. Somebody tells you that you look just like so and so, and you eek out the standard reply: “Well, they say everyone has a twin.”
Well, if you’re a seemingly normal 9-year-old girl in central Greece, you not only have a twin, but you carry her (or him) around in your stomach.
Yes, this is true. The girl, who was suffering from stomach pains and a swollen belly, went to the hospital where doctors surgically removed a growth that was found to be the girl’s embryonic twin. A formed fetus, it was two inches long and had a head, hair and eyes - but no brain or umbilical cord.
The girl has since made a full recovery, but the staggering thing is that this phenomenon has happened before. While it certainly isn’t considered common, i...

Of no particular surprise to anyone, on April 3 attorneys representing Rebecca Riley’s estate filed a lawsuit against the psychiatrist and Tufts Medical Center, where the psychiatrist practiced. Rebecca Riley, if you’ll remember, was the 4-year-old who died from an overdose of psychiatric drugs. The lawsuit was filed by a court-appointed guardian overseeing Riley’s estate, on behalf of Rebecca (for the pain and suffering she endured before her death) and Rebecca’s brother and sister. Riley’s parents are awaiting trial on second-degree murder charges related to their daughter’s death.
The psychiatrist who oversaw Rebecca’s care, Dr. Kayoko Kifuji, wasn’t fired, but has stopped seeing patients:

I do watch American Idol. I love this show and is definitely a showcase of America’s talent. Who doesn’t love the good judges, Randy and Paula. Then I guess, everyone had hated Simon Cowell at one point or another. Am I right or Am I right?! Ha ha ha.
Anyway, Simon isn’t that bad all the time. He too is capable of appreciating real talent when he sees one. Like his fabulous comments on David Cook and Carly Smithson.
Also, Simon Cowell has a soft heart too. Yes, indeed! Are you ready for this?
Simon Cowell goes soft-hearted with generous gift to cancer-stricken child
Simon says - it’s on me.
The often-harsh “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell was so moved after seeing a sick little girl on Oprah that he paid off her family’s $162,000 mortgage.

There is no prenatal genetic test for autism; there has been speculation that, as research into the genetics of autism develops, such a test might be created. Back in June of 2006, a team of doctors at University College Hospital in London—in view of the fact that autism is diagnosed in boys at a much higher rate than in girls—announced that they hoped to develop a test to screen for autism in male embryos for couples with a family history of autism. The test would use Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD), which screens embryos by taking a single cell from an early stage embryo; embryos with defective genes are discarded.
But how reliable are genetic and other prenatal tests for gender? Today’s Eye on DNA offers a thoughtful overview of the reliability of gender test k...

A month out, and this image still bugs me.
First, it’s the way Superman is scanning the “whole spectrum” including “microscopic, chemical, x-ray, auditory, ultrasonic, magnetic, photonic.” I wasn’t even aware that some of those had spectrums — and those that do are overlapping (auditory and ultrasonic fall within one spectrum, while magnetic, x-ray, and “photonic” fall within another). What exactly is a chemical spectrum, and how is Superman testing it? Is he smelling her? Tasting her? This is pushing his super-senses a little too far.
Second, and most important, the perspective really bothers me. It’s not that the art is particularly bad (thoug...

That Girl from Google is at it again! This time it's Lauren Turner, Account Planner, Google Health who posted this to Google's Health Advertising Blog:Lights, camera, action: the healthcare industry is back in the spotlight. (Not that it ever left the stage.) Next week, Michael Moore’s documentary film, Sicko, will start playing in movie theaters across America. The New York Times calls Sicko a “cinematic indictment of the American health care system.” The film is generating significant buzz and is sure to spur a lively conversation about health coverage, care, and quality in America. While legislators, litigators, and patient groups are growing excited, others among us are growing anxious. And why wouldn’t they? Moore attacks health insurers, health providers, and pharmaceutical com...

I got a letter in the mail today officially offering me the position in more-urban-city-down-the-road (MUCDTR) that has been in the works since november.
I am thrilled. I am panicking, big time.
Homes in MUCDTR are twice as expensive as our house here. There is actually more than one neighborhood where we’d consider living. We need to find a home. Very very soon. Mortgage. House selling. House buying. Movers. Aaaaaaaaaack. [sandbox, head, insert, deeply]
We will be moving. I will be starting a new job. And possibly hopefully bringing home our boy. All right around the same time, if g-d and pgn* cooperate. Aaaaaaaack. [deep breath of sand]
Pili will be commuting a loooong way to her job and staying over a few nights a week while school is in session....

Shenanigans aplenty this week, with The Welsh Pharmacist being reduced to looking forward to dealing with the Subutex girl, because at least it gave me a five minute break. Incidentally, she was a complete fox, with a sort of gothic style look about her with panda eyes and piercing everywhere. Almost as hot as Amy Winehouse.Anyway, This place I was in this week was hellish busy, with enough walk ins to tie up one computer all day, and a pile of surgery scripts the approximate thickness of Wisden to deal with every day. This would normally be ok, as someone could plod through the big pile and just generally get on with it.Not when you work for the Co-op though. One of our computers broke on Tuesday. This meant that we couldn't do any surgery scripts. It also highlighted the staggering incomp...

Pink or Blue Early Baby Gender DNA Test

About two years ago, the Early Baby Gender Mentor DNA test was launched. It purportedly tested for fetal DNA in maternal blood to see if there was any DNA from the Y chromosome - yes means boy, no means girl. Another similar test is now being sold called the Pink or Blue test. According to the press release, it is possible detect fetal DNA as early as six weeks all from a single dried blood spot. Accuracy is touted as being greater tha 98%.
You just gotta wonder about tests like these. First, is it really necessary to know so early whether the baby is a boy or girl? I have real concerns about parents who can’t wait for a fetal ultrasound to tell them; earliest an ultrasound can diagnosis a baby’s sex is around 11 to 12 weeks with the greatest accuracy after 16 to 20 weeks. Seco...
