Congratulations to Stan down there, over in Christchurch, New Zealand. He is the winner of the When Can I Go Home? Goodreads book giveaway. He will receive a signed copy of the book. I have got to say I love and always will have a fondness in my heart for New Zealand. Long ago when I was a young man like age 32, in the early 90's, I worked a locum tenans psychiatry job in old Palmerston North, New Zealand. working at Wanganui-Manawatu Health later named Mid-Central Health. I was fresh out of residency and life was hopeful. It seemed optimistic that you could actually pay off your loans and get out of debt as a practicing psychiatrist. -Ha!. It seemed like being a physician was a respectable thing to do in society (I hadn't lived in MN yet hah ha.) and all around li...

One of the things I enjoy about blogging (apart from the blogging) is hearing from other people out there doing their own thing on Planet Cancer. I love the different ways that people choose to challenge cancer, fundraise, raise awareness, and generally say Bah! in their own sweet way.
I recently heard from an organisation in the US called ‘Save 2nd Base’. They work to raise funds and breast cancer awareness in memory of Kelly Rooney, who died of breast cancer in 2006 at the age of 43. And I just love the way they do it. What I wouldn’t have given to walk into an oncology clinic wearing one of these babies.

For the uninitiated – and I had to check with Twitter – in the US there are dating analogies related to baseball. So, getting to first base is kissing, se...

Don’t tell us you forgot our birthday. For shame. See, back in the day, Blisstree used to be a network of blogs, but re-launched as the health and wellness website you now see before you one year ago today on March 11, 2010. Which makes today our first birthday, and you’re invited to our party.
Now, toddlers typically get cupcakes with candles in them for their birthdays, but here at Blisstree, we want to give presents on our special day, instead of receive them. (So definitely check out our 40 Days of Giveaways, where one reader wins a different prize every weekday for 40 days, just for becoming our Facebook fan. Two down, 38 to go!) So happy birthday to us, and by association, to you.
We’ve been really glad to bring you health and wellness content over...

This Valentine’s Day, you could be a boring old traditionalist and go the dinner, flowers, chocolates, lingerie, perfume, or teddy bear route. Or you could step things up in the bedroom with the We-Vibe II couples vibrator – which will give pleasure that lasts a lot longer than any of the aforementioned gifts, except for maybe the teddy bear. And to celebrate hearts, store-bought cards, and made-up holidays, we’re giving away a We-Vibe II couples vibrator to one lucky Blisstree reader, just for commenting on this post. Read on for details on how to enter.
This compact, colorful (ruby, purple, or teal) sex toy fits inside her during vaginal intercourse, providing maximum pleasure by stimulating both the G-spot and the clitoris. Oh, and there’s plenty of room for him, too...

We've done it every year. Cancer or not. Encephalitis or not. Hospital or not. Miscarriage or not. Although I will admit that one year we missed the pick-up deadline for our region, and brought our shoeboxes to a local battered women's shelter. That was a great experience, and I would highly recommend finding a local charity you can partner with so that your children get actual, hands-on experience helping desperate people. We now visit that shelter twice a year with children's and women's clothing we are no longer using, and all the toys we have sorted out of our toy room. The kids are always like kids in a candy store when we show up with a couple of garbage bags of new toys! But this - this is what we've done every year. My kids started out pretty uninvolved - the first year we packed wa...

10 Things We Want To Do This Weekend

It’s the weekend! Well, basically. Here’s what we’re going to do over the next two days:

Evalute our lives.
Okay, no. We aren’t actually going to get that heavy. But we will check out which areas of our life could use some shaping up.

Drink some cider.
We don’t care if it’s too early. We’re craving it, and we’d like a glass now. Please.

Sleep in.
We know this is a goal of ours every weekend. But tomorrow morning will literally be spent snoozing and doing crosswords in our robes.

Go shopping.
It’s getting chillier out, and we need a new sweater. Plus, it’s New York Fashion Week — we have to buy something, right?

Buy a planner.
We still think the start of fall feels like back to school. We’re going to indulge ourselve...

Summer’s winding down and we’re consumed with thoughts of cool, autumn evenings sipping red wine by the fire. We’re picturing ourselves curling up on the couch on lazy fall Sundays just taking it easy (and catching up on all things Blisstree, of course).
And we want to help one of our Facebook fans do just that – in style. To mark Susan G.
This week I have a signed copy of ‘The Bridesmaid Pact’ by Julia Williams to give away to someone in need of a good read.

I came to read this because I’d set off on a long journey with only a few pages left to read of the book I had with me. I went into Waterstones in a panic and was overwhelmed by the choice… so I asked Twitter to recommend a fiction paperback and said I’d buy the first one suggested. It was ‘The Bridesmaid Pact’. I bought it. I read it. I really enjoyed it. It’s funny, it deals with some pretty hefty themes, and the characters are all interesting and believable and just a little bit flawed. There’s a review of it here. Julia Williams blogs here and you can follow her on Twitter here.

On Saturday night, I watched my 100th movie since I started recording movies I watch on January 1, 2008. It was the widely acclaimed film Inception, which Erik and I thoroughly enjoyed. It was wonderfully acted, with superb plot twists, thought-provoking dialogue and tastefully done action sequences. Watching 101 movies has been part of my 101 Things in 1,001 Days Challenge and it was one of the first items on my list that I started. Although there have been periods of no movie watching (usually due to a dearth in desirable cinematic releases), I am excited to announce that I have just one movie left before I complete item #39.
Of course, with something this monumental, I can’t simply watch a movie and then be done with it. Being a blogger, I have to something much, much more memorab...

Though we have some of our own summer reading plans, we wanted to know what Blisstree readers were getting their noses into this season, so last week we put out a call for your best summer book recommendations.
We’re not sure if you’ve noticed (nudge, nudge), but we recently revamped our comments section. You don’t have to register and get a password or anything like that anymore – you can just comment. To celebrate, we’re giving away five prizes to the five best comments of this week. Yes, you read that right – five readers will win just by leaving a comment. We must be crazy! We are, but in a good way.

We hate to point out the obvious, but the more awesome the comment, the better chance you have of winning.
Leave your best comment below by 6 p.m. EST this Sunday, June 27, 2010, and you could win:

Become an EX and Quit Smoking: Enter This Week's Giveaway

Do you smoke or know someone who does? More importantly, do you want to quit?
At Blisstree, we think smoking is a big deal. And apparently, so do you. (One of our posts: What Happens to Your Body If You Stop Smoking Right Now? currently has 4,282 comments.)
That’s why we’re partnering with EX® for this week’s giveaway to support smokers who want to kick the habit, as well as non-smokers who want to help them do it.

BecomeAnEX is a FREE online and social-media-based quit smoking program. Get this: 70% of smokers in the U.S. want to quit, but only about 5% of smokers are successful in quitting long-term. Most people just don’t know how to quit.
That’s where EX comes in. The free EX Plan, available at BecomeAnEX, teaches smokers how to “re-learn” life without cigar...

Hey, Blisstree Readers! Five of you could win this cool, new water filtration pitcher from Mavea if you enter this week’s giveaway!
At Blisstree, we like water filtration pitchers because they mean less petroleum used to make plastic water bottles, lower transportation costs and CO2 emissions from flying and trucking cases of plastic water bottles, and, hopefully, fewer plastic water bottles clogging up landfills around the world. That’s why we’re partnering with Mavea for this week’s super-cool giveaway.

Jeiforman said: I didn’t meet LaToya or Rocco, but MY YELLOW purse did!!! Woop Woop!!
We think she was referring to our recent exclusive Bertolli Into the Heart of Italy Giveaway, where we randomly picked a reader (perhaps jeiforman’s friend?) and sent her on an all-expenses-paid trip to Los Angeles last week with Blistree’s Deputy Editor to meet chef Rocco DiSpirito!
Congratulations jeiforman – you’ve won yourself a special prize from Blisstree!
Keep it here for more giveaways.

Look! It’s our very first reader giveaway since we launched! (But it won’t be our last.)

Right now, Starbucks buys 75 percent of all its coffee from responsibly grown, ethically traded sources, and the company aims to up that number to 100 percent by 2015. (Last year, Starbucks also bought 40 million pounds of Fair Trade Certified coffee, which means it purchases more Fair Trade Certified coffee than anyone else in the world.)

Any parent that has a child with dyslexia can appreciate just how frustrating the disease is. While you want to sympathize with the child, sometimes it is difficult to know exactly what is going on to make them experience the difficulty with reading and comprehension. I learned so much from this book it was amazing.

Dr. Levinson, author of Smart But Feeling Dumb, describes dyslexia in terms anyone can understand. He’s been studying dyslexia since the 1990s and brings every bit of his knowledge to this book. It’s a wonderful resource for any family touched by dyslexia.
Want to win? Leave a comment on this post by Tuesday, September 29th. I’ll choose a winner at random and announce the lucky guy or girl the next day.

I don’t know about you but at this time of year I like to kick back a try a little escapism in my summer reading. So I’d like to challenge you to step into someone else’s shoes, just for a couple of hundred and sixty three pages. Generally speaking my first choice would be a whodunit, preferably one I can solve myself well before the end but not too soon after the first few chapters. That said, every once in a while you come across a life changing story, like Vicki Fo...

I just got done posting about the cause of American obesity (hint: it’s all about portion control) but as we know exercise is also important, and for more than just weight loss. Exercise helps build strong bones, increases memory function, and allows our hearts and lungs to operate efficiently.

I was happy to have received this Teen Walk DVD from the folks at Leslie Sansone. They have been very generous with their time and education, and are passionate about getting people healthy. (Not just “thin“!)
So without further adieu, the winner is: Shannon!

This past Friday night, in a surge of a psychotic midnight cleaning craving, I decided to attack the monsters that live in my closet. Also know as, a bunch of crap I’ve been collecting over the past two years with all the conferences and stuff that people give me.
Most of the stuff was pretty ridiculous. I found a sweater that had lost both of its buttons (making it entirely unwearable), some shirts that really just needed to be hung up on hanger (duh…) and three bags of conference crap that no one uses and kills trees.
I also found a bag full of diabetes goodies that I had collected during my ill-fated attempt at the OC New Me Challenge.I thought to myself, “What to do… what to do…” I could hoard away all these goodies and be selfish and keep them for m...

A thorough desensitization plan is an essential tool for many parents of autistic children. The key to success is both consistency and persistence with a healthy dollop of patience and encouragement. It’s a recipe for success around here and after many long years of practice we are now the very proud, temporary custodians of an ex-neophobe. This is not to say that my youngest son actually enjoys very much of the food in his new diet but he does eat it.For many months now we have been fading the reward, the chocolate pudding, until it finally fizzled out about a month ago. However, chocolate pudding is a very good way of getting high calories of fat and protein, which when you’re very skinny may not be such a bad thing. As a consequence, I decide that the reintroduction of chocolate pud...

Am happy to see that so many of you are like me and love hitting the road. Road trips really are exhilerating and result in such memorable experiences.
But road trips aren’t only about getting in the car and driving off in the sunset. They can also be about looking for change, looking for answers, and clearing the mind.
And that’s really what the book ‘Road Trip Guide to the Soul’ is all about. I can guarantee that by the time you’ve finished reading it and following some of the ideas and action plans, you’ll be feeling as exhilerated as when you got into the car and took off.
One lucky Healthbolt reader will be able to discover this for themselves. The winner of Sadie Nardini’s Road Trip Guide to the Soul is…
Brandlyn

‘no one knows what goes on behind closed doors’.
- Behind Closed Doors, Charlie Rich, 1973
Okay, so it’s not something that we freely admit but let’s face it, we all have a little bit of curiosity as to what goes on in other people’s bedrooms. After all, we live in a world that seems to be obsessed with sex. But when it comes to talking about the intimate details of one’s sex life, it’s something that seldom happens, especially among women.
Writer and editor Paula Derrow thinks this is because of fear…
‘fear of being exposed as inadequate, or worse, of being boring. Living in an all-sex-all-the-time culture may be liberating in many ways, but it can also breed shame - shame for not keeping up, for not being invited to the party.’

Having somewhere safe to carry your keys, wallet, cell phone etc while walking, running, and exercising is a real problem. We all have different ways of dealing with it, but I think Gracie’s Gear has the answer - a top with plenty of compartments to place things.
Two lucky Healthbolt readers will soon find out how useful this is.
Congratulations to
Amanda
who has won a Gracie’s Short Top
and to
Tisa
who has won a Gracie’s A-line Tank

You’ll both be receiving an email with instructions on how to claim your prize.

Wow. Looks like everyone wants one of these amazing toothbrushs, including me. The Oral B Pulsonic puts my supermarket bought battery operated Colgate toothbrush to shame.
But, unfortunately, there is only one Oral B Pulsonic to give away.
And the lucky Healthbolt reader is…
Reva Skie
Congratulations Reva Skie. You’ll be getting an email shortly with instructions on how to claim your prize.
As for the rest of us - well, I don’t know about you but I’m seriously thinking of upgrading my toothbrush. If nothing else, it will sure make my dentist happy.
