Should You Keep Lipstick in the Refrigerator?

Veuve asks…Since I have a lot of lipstick and it seems to be one of the cosmetics that goes bad relatively quickly, I was wondering if keeping it in the refrigerator or freezer would help it last longer. Or would the moisture/cold do something nasty to the oils or pigments?
The Left Brain responds:
Good question, Veuve. Making your cosmetics last longer is a great way to save money.
Low temp lipstick
When it comes to making cosmetics last longer, lower temperature is generally better. That’s because chemical reactions occur faster at higher temperatures. (A rough rule of thumb is that the rate of any given reaction will double with every 10C increase in temperature.) Lipsticks are prone to oxidation reactions that can turn certain oils rancid and keeping your sticks in the &#...

Here’s a good example of beauty and brains coming together: a gadget that allows you to attach lip balm to your watch, your cell phone, your pager, or other portable electronic device. It even works on sunglasses!
It’s called “Care4lipz” and you can read about it here. The manufacturer, First Dutch Europe B.V., offers this tiny techy tub with lip balm or lip gloss and with UV sunscreen in a variety of flavors.
It makes us wonder what opportunities there are for other miniature marvels. How about small packs of breath mints? Maybe a tiny tube of mascara?
It’s not exactly nanotechnology, but it is pretty cool! Of course, it would be cooler if they made it in pink.
Note: I just found out that Care4Lipz went out of business and that the the original US inventor ...

Terry’s concern…I read about a new lip gloss that tells if your drink is spiked with date rape drugs. Is it true?
The Right Brain’s reply:
This product you’re referring to is 2LoveMyLips Lip Gloss. The product itself doesn’t detect drugs, but it comes with a test kit that lets you check your drink to make sure it’s not contaminated with Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a common date rape drug. The idea, according to 2LoveMyLips, it to show that just because women want to look sexy doesn’t mean that they want men to seduce them. They offer 5 different colors and flavors, each coming a drink testing kit. But is this just a gimmick or do these kits really work?

Mid Brain reports:
Beautypress.com has an interesting article about trends in lipstick over the last 9 decades. Apparently there’s a connection between socioeconomic conditions and the color and shape of women’s lips. The author tracks these trends starting with the 1920s and shows how lipsticks have been influenced by social conditions of the times. Very interesting stuff and it got us thinking how lipstick chemistry has changed over time.
Pigments of the past
Earliest references to lip color can be traced back about 5000 years to ancient Babylon. At that time women crushed semi-precious stones and smeared them on as lipstick. Ancient Egyptian women used iodine and bromine to give their lips a purple-red color. Cleopatra supposedly mixed crushed carmine beetles and ant’s e...

Right Brain’s rant:

We’ve blogged before about how your purse can make you sick and how your shower poof may be full of disease. Well, here’s more good news: your lip gloss may put you at a higher risk for cancer.
Lip gloss danger?
According to this article on MSNBC, some dermatologists claim that lip gloss may increase your risk of skin cancer.
“These lip glosses can make more of the light rays penetrate directly through the skin instead of getting reflected off of the skin’s surface,” says Dr. Christine Brown, a dermatologist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Here’s how it works: the moisture in the lip gloss “smooshes down” your lips’ natural protective layer so the UV rays can more easily penetrate deeper into ...

Hey Girls
The Beauty Brains recent story about lip balm prompted Wyeth to send samples of their latest product, ChapStick True Shimmer. I was picked to try them out.
They come in some yummy flavors like Botanical Berry and Tropical.
Initial Reactions
First thing I loved about these lip balms were the fabulous fragrances. Tropical True Shimmer smells like a Pina Colata and Botanical Berry smells like a Cosmopolitan. Can you tell I’m writing this just before happy hour?
I also loved pink packaging! That’s the color they used for Botanical Berry.
Using the Product
I tried Tropical first because I liked how it smelled. It is like putting a Pina Colata on your lips. It glides on so smoothly. It also makes your lips extra shiny. Left Brain tells me that’s because they contain Titanium ...

DVG declares…My lips have been chapped and dry - which causes me to do the worst thing for them: I unconsciously bite at them when they are chapped. I have tried several lip balms and is it possible that they can cause my lips to dry out more than moisturize them? I’ve tried these: Nivea Moisture and Burt’s Bee’s balm in a tin. Both drying.
Can you help me find one that is truly moisturizing? Thank you!
Left Brain’s Lippy Reply
Lip balm is an individual thing. One type may work for one person but not for you. I personally love Carmex Lip Balm. During winter, I can’t get enough!

Pam is perplexed: I read a review about a lipgloss that adapts to your natural lip color. It’s called JK Jemma Kidd Lip ID color adapt gloss. Does this really work?

Could applying lip gloss increase your risk of skin cancer?
Image details: Head shot of woman wearing sunglasses served by picapp.com
Lip gloss: it’s a woman’s staple. For some guys, too, I ’spose, but who am I to judge?
Anyhoo…the use of lip gloss tragically misleads many a person into thinking their lips are protected while out in the sun. Well guess what? They’re not.
In fact, the same super shininess that makes lip gloss lip gloss, can actually be quite detrimental by inviting the sun’s rays right onto your kisser. Think of it as hoisting up a magnifying glass to your lips in the middle of the Sahara. Not cool, right?
Now while no links have actually been made between lip gloss and skin cancer, it is safe to say that when heading out onto the boat o...

What kind of lip balms or glosses do you use? You may want to stay away from the shiny ones as they may attract ultraviolet rays (UV rays of the sun) and thereby increase the rtisk of skin cancer.
Such were the findings of Dr. Christine Brown, a dermatologist at at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.
Lips are more susceptible than skin to aging from chronic sun damage and also more prone to developing serious cancers.
“When skin cancer occurs on the lower lip, it has the potential to be much more aggressive and metastasize to surrounding lymph nodes,” Brown said in a prepared statement.
Shiny balms and glosses don’t offer protection. Instead, they attract the sun’s rays to the lips.
“What most people don’t realize is they’re actually increa...

Is Menthol Lip Balm Bad For You?

Today’s question and answer post is brought to us by Forebrain, the newest lobe of the Beauty Brains. Please join us in welcoming Forebrain to the Beauty Brains community!
Michelle’s menthol madness: I heard from a friend that the menthol in products, such as lip balm and face wash, is actually irritating, and the tingling effect that one feels is your face or lips or whatever getting chapped. I figure that menthol can irritate your skin, but is it really harmful to the skin?
Forebrain’s inaugural response:
Your friend is only partially right. Menthol may sometimes be irritating, but the cooling sensation that you feel when you use menthol-containing lip balm or facewash is not because your skin is getting chapped. The sensation is actually caused by the effect of the menthol on your...

Sarah Bellum Says:
I was lucky enough to sample a lip stick and lip gloss from Lahens Viarr and while I have to admit that I had never heard of this brand before, it may just be my new favorite combo.
Getting glossy
First I tried Viarr’s Brown Sugar lip gloss. I’m particularly picky about lip gloss packaging and this one met my high personal standards. It has a sponge type applicator that spread the product easily. I do wish it was a bit fluffier so it would hold more product because I had to dip it too many times, but overall it applied very nicely.
I liked the gloss itself because it’s smooth but not messy. It was easy to control so it sticks to my lips and doesn’t smear on the sides of my mouth. And I LOVED the color looking at the bottle even though it seemed a...

3 Reasons To Not Recycle Lipsticks

Sandie’s sticky question: Has anyone tried making a new lipstick out of the end bits of old ones? There is always quite a lot left inside the case and I have about 25 almost empty lipsticks that I keep meaning to do something with. Just not sure how to go about it!
Sarah Bellum Says:
Sandie, that’s a very interesting question! I kicked it around with the other Beauty Brains and we think trying to fix those sticks is probably a waste of time. Here are three reasons why:
1. Color calamity
Unless you have 25 tubes of the same color, you’re going to mix shades which might end up looking like baby poop.
2. Spoiled stick
Lipstick formulas are a mixed up waxes, oils and pigments. Since not all lipsticks use the same ingredients, when you mix different products from different brands you mi...

Kelly’s question: I saw your post that says Promise lip gloss doesn’t really help you lose weight. But I just read at Bella Sugar that Too Faced Cosmetics has a new lip gloss called Fuze that really works. Is Fuze any better than Promise for weight loss?
The Right Brain replies:
Fuze lip gloss is a joint project between Too Faced Cosmetics and a division of the Coca Cola company that makes the Fuze beverage. You can read all about it at Cosmetics Design.
Does Fuse really work?
The primary active ingredient in this product is called Supercitrate, which is the calcium-potassium salt of hydroxycitric acid (HCA for short.) Supposedly HCA works by inhibiting the creation of fatty acids and cholesterol. A study by CV, Garis R, et al, from the Department of Physiology, Medicine and Pathol...

Alicia asks: I work at an after school program for young women and we are having a makeover day (partly because I want them to try more natural looks than the traditional teenage racoon look they’ve all been sporting). Along with makeup tips, I wanted to teach them what are common ingredients in their makeup. So what is in lip gloss, mascara, and eye shadow?
The Right Brain gets lippy:
Good for you, Alicia. We love to help our community learn about cosmetics. You should find our previous posts on mascara, eye liner, and lip balm ingredients helpful. And here’s a brand new post on lip gloss, just for you!
What is lip gloss

Addicted to lip balm
I love using lip balm and you may, too. Evidently, 64% of women use lip conditioning products. I have tubes of it everywhere and can’t stand how my lips feel when it’s not on. I might even go so far as to say I’m addicted to it but experts say there’s no need to worry about that. There simply isn’t an ingredient in any of them...

Lauma’s lament: Hi there, and thanks for the incredible website! After reading your posts I’ve learned that many products really aren’t that different, and that there are some things a cream cannot change. But there is one thing that is really bugging me: It drives me crazy when my lips are chapped and sore. I have tried loads of products, such as the lip butters offered by the Body Shop (I could swear they make my lips feel even worse, they become very dry after a few hours), but there is only one balm that actually seemed to help my lips (it was probably the cheapest, too). Now I’m worried they’ll stop selling it so I was wondering if you could tell me what ingredients to look for in other lip balms.
The ingredients in The Balm: Petrolatum, Ceresin, Paraffin, Ho...

Randi G. registers concern:
I just noticed that the N.Y.C. lipstick I bought was made in China. With all the dangerous goods coming from China, I wonder whether this lipstick is poisonous or harmful in some way?

The Right Brain responds:
Unfortunately, Randi, recent research shows that N.Y.C. lipstick IS highly toxic and that it will kill you and anyone you’ve kissed while wearing it.
JOKING!
Are cosmetics made in China?
Seriously, we doubt you have much to be worried about. Our guess is that “Made in China” means the lipstick case is from China and not the product itself. We don’t know this for sure, of course, but we do know it’s common for cosmetic companies to purchase packaging components from China. It’s very unusual for companies to have finished products made in China...

A while back we reported a story about how a fragrance can make it look like you’ve lost weight. Well, Omega Tech Labs has introduced a lip gloss called Promise that is supposed to have weight loss benefits.
According to the company, the lip gloss contains a blend of botanical oils (castor oil, coconut oil and evening primrose oil) that work as appetite suppressants. Experts say that these ingredients can work but they don’t believe you will get enough exposure from the lip gloss to make much difference.
While this Beauty Brain is highly skeptical, there is some science backing up the product concept. Researchers at the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation have done studies showing that odors can actually help people lose weight. If Promise lip gloss contains app...
