Discussing Immunization: The Injustice Of Interviewing Dr. Wakefield

When Dr. Andrew Wakefield was interviewed on ABC’s “Good Morning America” [recently], an injustice occurred. For children, I mean. And it occurred inadvertently, I suspect. But I believe this injustice happens all the time when it comes to children’s health and wellness.
What the media covers really changes how we think and feel about protecting and parenting our children. The media’s effort to inform and educate — just like that of physicians and nurses, social workers and ancillary staff, researchers, and students — can get lost and misconstrued. ABC worked hard to inform us of the accusations against Dr. Wakefield with a two-minute introduction by Dr. Richard Besser, a pediatrician and medical editor/correspondent. Yet when the interview was over, ...

BP is using chemical dispersants to break up the remnants of its oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, but is that doing more harm than good? Good Morning America explored under the surface to see what the conditions are really like. Hint: It’s not looking good…

“Honey, I don’t love you anymore, and I don’t know if I ever did” are words that must sting coming from a spouse after 20-odd years of betrothal. But when Laura Munson’s husband told her exactly that, she forged ahead, unconvinced. The Montana-based writer’s new book, This Is Not The Story You Think It Is chronicles the tale she first told in The New York Times (to overwhelming reader response – the comments came in at a rate that crashed the comments section). Her husband told her he wanted to leave, she didn’t believe him, and through the power of belief, she seems to have saved her marriage.
On today’s Good Morning America, George Stephanopoulos interviewed Munson, an...

Hating On Martha: Always Profitable, Never Gets Old

Mariana Pasternak, Martha Stewart’s ex-bestie, went on ABC’s Good Morning America on Tuesday to hawk her new book, The Best of Friends: Martha and Me.
In the video below, Pasternak waxes poetic about their past with host George Stephanopoulos. “…We went to the Galapagos, we went to Machu Picchu, we sailed the Nile, rode horses in Egypt, paddled the Amazon … and on those trips we shared everything. We shared excitement, we shared a room, we shared a bed”. They also shared insider trading info that landed Martha in the slammer. Oops!
Pasternak misses her friendship with Martha, but not as much as she hopes her book rakes it in.

It all began on June 4, 2008 with an article in Journal of Neurology entitled, “Denture Cream: An Unusual Source of Excess Zinc, Leading to Hypocupremia and Neurologic Disease.” Now, one year later, after some Good Morning America interviews prompted speedy popularity for the subject, the law firm of Bernstein Liebhard filed four lawsuits against GlaxoSmithKline in Pennsylvania, then one against SmithKline and Procter & Gamble in federal court.
A May 5, 2009 article at the TransWorldNews website contains a broken link to the Good Morning America interviews. It appears they have been taken down. On the GMA website, a page titled “Study Finds a Possible Link Between Denture Cream and Imbalance” features statements from SmithKline and Procter & Gamble, along with a link to the...

If Charlie’d had a younger sibling, would we have decided to participate in studies like this one at the University of Washington, as noted in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:
Autism researchers at the University of Washington are seeking parents who will allow them to do brain scans of their infants.
………….
The UW scientists are looking for 84 six-month-old infants from California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Nevada and Alaska who have an older sibling who has been diagnosed with autism. They also need 34 infants with typically developing older brothers or sisters.
Each child will be scanned three times over two years.
Certainly I would have considered having a sibling of Charlie’s participate in such a study—-and then, after reading (wading...

While the economy is down in the dumps, and most of us are scaling back for the holidays, Violight, makers of toothbrush sanitizers are sure to have a Christmas they won’t soon forget. Why? Their best-selling toothbrush sanitizer, Zapi, was recently featured as one of Oprah’s “Favorite Things” for the holidays by O Magazine. With millions of readers around the world, and additional coverage by Good Morning America, the Zapi is getting some major press this holiday season.

Quick Look at the Zapi
The Zapi is an egg-shaped device that utilized UV rays to kill germs crawling all over your toothbrush in minutes. Just one tap on the power button each day is all it takes. It even comes in three colors: green, blue, and orange. This is ...

Good Morning America aired an interesting piece on cross-nursing this morning. I thought it was quite balanced. I liked hearing the well-spoken mothers who were interviewed and I appreciated seeing the La Leche League position presented. In addition to the video clip the article is available on-line.

Since it was Father’s Day this past Sunday, comedian Jim Carrey’s “autism made a man out of me” (versus a guy of this sort?) remark—reportedly uttered earlier this month at the Green Our Vaccines rally—seemed quite well-timed. Raising Charlie has certainly been a transforming and affirming experience for me, though somehow saying “autism made a woman out of me” doesn’t have quite that, ah, ring. While taking care of Charlie has changed me a lot, one lesson I’ve learned over and over is that much that I’ve previously learned—like how to play the piano—has been hugely important in being Charlie’s mother.

Shortly after the Good Morning America segment on neurodiversity aired on Tuesday, I was asked to do an interview with CFRB in Canada, on the Leslie Roberts show. It was live and lasted for only about five minutes. Mr. Roberts focused on the notion of “curing” autism: Who wouldn’t want this? Why not support research into the causes of autism?
I talked more about acceptance and hope and education—about how it’s not about finding some magic pill, but that, through careful, individualized, and compassionate teaching and understanding, autistic children can learn, grow, and thrive.
I was asked if it’s just a matter, then, of waving a white flag. I asked for the question to be repeated: Mr. Roberts said something like, so is it just, surrender, just deal with...

b5 media’s very own Kristina Chew, PhD - the mastermind behind Autism Vox - is going to be on Good Morning America on abc tomorrow morning!
Both Kristina and Ari Ne’eman, the president of the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network (ASAN), were interviewed about autism, and the director for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Tom Insel, will be in the segment as well.
Be sure to watch Kristina, Ari Ne’eman, and Tom Insel on Good Morning America tomorrow. You may just learn a thing or to about autism and mental health from three really good sources!

While it’s possible my dad was referring to seeing a framed photo of me at various stages of my life (though the majority of the photos in my parents’ house are now of a certain boy, their only grandson), my dad did indeed mean that he’d seen me on tv.
So if you happen to be near one from 7-9am tomorrow, Monday, June 9th, and you happen to be watching Good Morning America, you may well see me. I was interv...

Ah … the mind is far more fascinating than most realize. Did you know that people would rather wear a jersey that was dropped in dog plop, for instance, than don a near-new sweater once owned by a mass murderer? Or are you aware that people born in summer months are happier and more open to new ventures than those born in winter? It’s all laid out … from luck to the paranormal … in Dr. Richard Wiseman’s new book, Quirkology. A spotlight on human behavior … the book sketches quirky samples from the science of everyday life.Check out a video of quirks this British psychologist observed over ten years compiling from studying people and the mind. The author describes tell-tale signs that reveal truths about a liar &hellip...
