You can find the medical blogosphere’s best next week at Covert Rationing. We’ve taken a different approach this week to organizing Grand Rounds. You can find all the submissions below in this post. But, we’ve also selected quotes from each blog and highlighted those on the main page. Consistent with our themes, we’ve also tagged all the posts related to health, happiness, design or innovation. You can search for these tags to see how each theme plays out. We’ve also added bits of commentary to some of the individual quotes and summaries - especially when we’ve read something recently that relates to the general topic or...

Along with the excellent posts, I’ve included pictures of the changes cameras have gone through over the years – from the pin-hole camera to digital phone cameras. Enjoy! Dr. Charles hasn’t had much time lately, but I was able to scribble down this pediatric poem: A Beating. As one commenter figured out, Dr. Charles is a new father. Congratulations! and thanks for the poem. (camera obscura – photo credit) Jordan, In My Humble Opinion, writes about the covenant of being a doctor: I mean it is kind...

A new blog has entered the medical world. She’s only a couple months old, but she has an awesome name: happy internist. happy internist shows us all how to die healthy:
my patient saw her gynecologist. he told her to eat right, get lots of exercise, and lose weight. that way, he said, you can die healthy.
What a great quote. It’s called finishing strong. Given what I know about the incredible pain and suffering I witness everyday from self induced disease, dying healthy is a goal worth living for. Death is inevitable. Dying healthy takes hard work and personal sacrifice.
She was discovered at this week’s Grand Rounds, where Dr Val has done an excellent job of organizing the best of this week’s Internet medical offerings.

Grand Rounds Volume 7, Number 26: The Emotional Edition

This brand new Grand Round is up at Better Health

When I host Grand Rounds I like to organize the posts into emotion categories – kind of the way that movies are categorized into “drama, action, comedy, etc.” This achieves two goals: first, readers have the option of starting with their favorite emotion – maybe you need a “pick me up” or maybe you’re looking for something to get your blood pumping? Second, I get a general feeling for how my fellow bloggers are feeling these days. Judging from the volume of posts in each category, it seems that the majority of you are either surprised or outraged!

Welcome to the Veterans Day edition of Grand Rounds. Elvis and I are delighted that you dropped by. The King is very excited today because we are saluting celebrities that have served in the Armed Forces. Elvis said that his days in the army were memorable. I imagine having Life Magazine take your picture while you’re sitting in your underwear would be a memorable experience. My co-host and I want to thank everyone for their submissions, and we especially want to thank Dr. Nick Genes for allowing us to hold Grand Rounds at Nurse Ratched’s Place.
Elvis told me that the doctor gave him a lot of shots right after that underwear picture was taken. The King knows that vaccinations are important and he wants everyone to get their shots. Dr. Val from Better Healt...

Space Food: The Best and Worst (Boing Boing)

Astronaut foods during the Gemini and Apollo programs were highly processed, because “low-residue” food meant fewer encounters with the dread fecal bag. To prevent crumbs, which could float into eyes and instrumentation panels, many foods – even “sandwiches” — took the form of bite-sized cubes lacquered with waxy, congealed oils. Rarely has anything so cute been so loathed. The coating stuck to the roof of the mouth and the cubes had to be rehydrated by “holding in the mouth for ten seconds.”

Better Health’s Grand Rounds this week is hosted by the ever-so-crafty Life in the Fast Lane team of Australian physicians at the Utopian College of Emergency for Medicine.
These docs “take great pleasure in sharing their medical experiences, clinical knowledge and insights into waiting-room medicine with health-conscious technophiles to facilitate the learning process by providing diverse and hopefully entertaining reading material.” It’s always worth a read (and a chuckle), no doubt.
With the theme of ”Killer Posts” (just a hint — hate to blow the surprise), this edition of Grand Rounds is sure to educate in more ways than one! Experience it HERE. (Source: Better Health)

Dr. Toni Brayer has a guest post at ACPInternist about how insurance companies are killing primary care. I would like every Grand Rounds Reader to take a look at this and think very hard about what they will support in terms of insurance industry oversight. This post was first published on Dr. Brayer’s blog EverythingHealth.net.

Proudly South African!

Dr. Elaine Schattner of Medical Lessons is the host for this week’s Grand Rounds. It’s the “customer service in healthcare” edition. You can read this week’s edition here. Learning about medicine is a lifelong endeavor whether you’re a patient, a doctor, a caregiver, a hospital administrator or, perhaps, even an insurance company executive. It’s been a tough week for the anti-vaccine movement but an important week for pediatric health. Yesterday the UK’s General Medical Council announced that Andrew Wakefield, who’s fraudulent manipulation of data spawned the vaccine-autism cottage industry, would be ‘struck’ from the medical register. This action by the GMC is one more nail in the coffin of the man who has singlehandedly turned back the clock on two generations of pediatric public health.
As newly-appointed content manager of Better Health and editorial assistant to Dr. Val Jones, I’ve been given the honor of hosting this edition of Grand Rounds — a weekly summary of the best health blog posts on the Internet.
This week’s submissions cover a nice mix of issues important to health and medicine, which I’m presenting in alphabetical order (excuse my conservativeness as I’m originally a product of the Mayo Clinic, and even after jumping ship nearly five years ago, I’m still affected due to my self-inflicted unchanged location — I’ll find my more liberal social-media legs soon!)
From geriatrics to Viagra, PET scans to personality disorders, dentists to American Idol, you’ll find it in this ever-so-tidy session of Grand Rounds.

The book contains 34 copper engravings. 31 of these magnificent medical illustrations were made by a mysterious man called Jan van Rymsdyk. ………………...

The Holidays may be over, but there’s no rest for Santa or his cute little Congressional elves. So, after a respite that must have seemed all too brief, Santa has herded his diminutive (but ever-cheerful!) drudges right back into their Secret Workshop, to finish building for us kids the Healthcare We Can All Believe In.

I especially liked Do you ever go through the motions
“My last instructor told me that sometimes they go through the motions of doing CPR (reanimation), even when they know it is futile, for the benefit of the family. Do you ever go through the motions?”
I also liked the post over at Muse, RN. A relative newcomer to the blog...

It's been very crazy clinically this week, and I'm soon to head off to Philly for the CABANA trial investigator meeting, but I wanted to share a few key links before I left:First, Change of Shift, the best posts of the week from our nurses is up over at Emergiblog.Next, Paul Levy, President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess hospital has a nice series of videos covering the culture of safety and how their hospital is making their safety data transparent, using patient advocates, and how patients there keep in touch with friends and family. Good stuff. Just try to look past the J&J ads. Finally, if you haven't done it yet, shoot over to Medgadget to vote for who you think will be the next nobel prize recipients.-WesMusings of a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist.
Welcome to the latest edition of Grand Rounds, the weekly compilation of the best of the medical blogosphere! Let’s take a trip around the blogosphere with a nod to “Around the World in Eighty Days” The story starts in London on October 2, 1872. Phileas Fogg is a wealthy English gentleman who lives unmarried in solitude at Number 7 Savile Row, Burlington Gardens. …..Later, on that day, in the Reform Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph, stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. Since I live on the North American Continent, we’ll begin our journey here. Consider taking a walking tour of the monuments if you are ever in Washington DC. (photo credit) This pa...

This week the Grand Round, the weekly summary of the best of the medical blogosphere, is being hosted by Flavio Guzmán at Pharmamotion, a blog about basic and clinical pharmacology.
The Round is entitled: “Brief Grand Rounds from Argentina“. Flavio had to keep it short, because (who would think of that? – I didn’t) winter has [...] (Source: Laika's MedLibLog)

Dr Edwin Leap is this week's host of Grand Rounds. You can read it here. Great edition!Today is June 30, 2009. Which means, if I’m correct, that tomorrow is July 1st. And July 1st is the day that, all across the country, recent medical school graduates begin residencies in their assorted specialties. An amazing time, indeed! I remember it well. Standing around in a suit, listening to lectures, trying to figure out who was really smart and who was more like me. None of us knowing, by a long-shot, what we were embarking upon. The latest edition of Change of Shift (Vol 3, No 26) is hosted by ReHabRN! You can find the schedule and the COS archives at Emergiblog. Welcome to the June 25, 2009 edition of Change of Shift. Many thanks to Kim at emergiblog for allowing me to host this edition.'Ti...

The Jobbing Doctor is this week's host of Grand Rounds. You can read it here. Great edition! Welcome to Grand Rounds, Volume 5, Number 38. The rounds have travelled over the Atlantic to reside briefly in the green fields of England, to give an English flavour to what is going on in the Medical Blogosphere. The advent of blogging has internationalised many issues, and we see many health care issues are very much shared throughout the world. Some of these I will touch on this week, but the Jobbing Doctor is pleased to be hosting the grand rounds. Sally Church, Pharma Strategy Blog, writes “Beating malignant cancer - Yes, it can be done” -- great story!
See First is this week's host of Grand Rounds. You can read it here. Blogs make it possible for these voices to be heard, and we’re very fortunate to have a great variety of blogs and bloggers to feature in this edition of Grand Rounds. These stories and these people need a more prominent place in the public mind, and I’m hopeful I can play a small part in that with this week’s edition. The submissions this week come from as far away as Australia, South Africa and the UK, and as close to home as my hometown. But on the web these are all local calls, so I’ve categorized the more than 2 dozen submissions this week into a few topics. Better Health featured a post by Dr Charles Smith on Ten Tips for Overcoming Your Headaches. The tips are from my classmate, Dr Le...

Pharmamotion is this week's host of Grand Rounds. It is a really nice edition. Read it here. I’m excited for being part of what a would dare to say it’s by now a classic: Grand Rounds, the best of medical writing on the web! Thank you to the medical and health bloggers who submitted their posts.
The latest issue of Grand Rounds is hosted this week by Leslie, at Getting Closer to Myself. This week's theme is "reflections on the way life used to be". Along these lines, I used to carry a stethoscope, but gave it up long ago for the rock star lifestyle of an academic radiologist. My Grand Rounds contribution, Just Say No to Stethoscopes, has more to say on why this is a Good Thing. (Source: Not Totally Rad)
