To Some, Glaxo Wind Turbines Are Just Hot Air

Going green may not always be easy. To lower electrical use, GlaxoSmithKline wants to construct a pair of 390-feet high wind turbines at its 45-acre site in Montrose, Scotland, where active pharmaceutical ingredients are made. When the ‘on’ switch is flicked in two years, the turbines should generate six megawatts of electricity, which is enough power for 3,000 homes, and any excess energy could be delivered to the National Grid.
Here is how a Glaxo spokesman explains the proposed operation to The Courier: “All of the electricity would go in to a local network and any surplus that GSK would generate over and above its immediate needs to operate the site offsets the carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas, which the combined heat and power unit currently operating on the site p...

By Daniel IkensonRhetorically, President Obama is a champion of industry—as long as it’s green. To put our money where his mouth is, the president has already devoted over $100 billion in direct subsidies and tax credits to promote investment in solar panel, wind harnessing, lithium ion battery, and other industries he deems crucial to “winning the future.” (See Economic Report of the President, 2011, P. 129, Box 6-2 “Clean Energy Investments in the Recovery Act” for a list of some of those subsidies.) Concerning those industries, the president said in his 2010 SOTU address:
Countries like China are moving even faster… I’m not going to settle for a situation where the United States comes in second place or third place or fourth place in what will be ...

Almost every way we make electricity today, except for the emerging renewables and nuclear puts out CO2. And so, what we’re going to have to do at a global scale, is create a new system. And so, we need energy miracles.
~Bill Gates
A typographical error led Amory Lovins to coin the phrase negawatts. In a brilliant 1989 keynote address to the Green Energy Conference in Montreal he outlined what has become the blueprint for a radical business and energy concept.
Pay people to do nothing.
Twenty-plus years later the idea is deeply taking hold.

Fast-forward to Dr. Ron Denbo who was recently featured on a TED global ideas project. He is the Founder and CEO of Zerofootprint, an international company that provides software to measure and manage carbon footprint. Individuals, governments ...

Design psychology goes beyond aesthetics, and beyond art and decor books to find something more — it seeks to uncover your very emotions and thoughts about settings. Design psychology seeks to connect you to the types of places, spaces and items that evoke the most pleasant memories.
Design psychology is about discovering your personal style and finding a place that truly fulfills you and feels like home.
Here’s an excerpt from a Los Angeles Times article on how design psychology works…

When Ran and Ronit Ever-Hadani expanded their Mar Vista home, they ended up with a long, narrow space that had a fireplace smack in the middle. Because the room was almost like a bowling alley with no natural flow, the couple didn’t have a clue what to do with it. So the area remained u...

Meghan O’Rourke is a writer in many incarnations — an essayist, poet, critic, and editor. I got to know Meghan during the time that this blog appeared on Slate , and I was very eager to get my hands on her new book.
The Long Goodbye is a memoir of her mother’s death from cancer in 2008, at the age of 55, when Meghan was 32 years old. Going through great unhappiness is one of the best, and most difficult, teachers of happiness, so I was very interested to hear what Meghan had to say.

Gretchen: What’s a simple activity that consistently makes you happier?
Meghan: Taking a walk. I used to run a lot, and that always made me happier (even if I was unhappy lacing up my shoes to do it). But I tore the cartilage in my right hip and n...

I’m a huge fan of Twitter, and I’ve tried to persuade several people to give it a try. (My greatest triumph: convincing my sister to use it. Seeing my sister in my Twitter feed — that makes me very happy.)
We’ve all seen how Twitter can play an unprecedented role in world events and in news communication. But on a very personal, routine level, there are several (other) ways in which Twitter can boost your happiness.
After all, is it just a coincidence that a blue bird is both the symbol for happiness and the symbol for Twitter? Probably yes, I know, but still, it’s a happy coincidence.
1. Twitter allows you to pursue your passion — even if only in your imagination.
A key to a happier life is to have fun – people who regularly have fun are twenty times ...

So, it’s Earth Week. But who really cares? Anybody? This year, Earth Week directly coincides with both Easter and Passover. So essentially, it’s a battle: Mother Nature vs. Jesus vs. the Ancient Israelites. Not to take anything away from dear Mother Earth, but for the record, my money is not on her to win this fight this week. Not with that kind of fiercely religious competition in the ring.
In case you weren’t aware, it’s actually been Earth Month for all of April. (And this Friday, April 22 is Earth Day.) But what does that really mean, other than that the requisite annual events, parades, activities, fairs, and open houses (that mostly serve to create more trash) are held around the world? Well, it means that for one day, one week, or one month, people talk more ...

A year later, Obamacare makes Pennsylvanians say "no thank you."
In a peculiar set of responses to inquiries about Libya, the Obama administration makes "kinetic military action" against the English language.
Full or substantial government health insurance makes for an inefficient and expensive health care system.
Emotionalism as democratic waves spread across the Middle East makes incoherent foreign policy.
As long as big ticket items continue to make the cut, our fiscal house will remain in disarray.
If you didn't get a chance to celebrate Earth Hour Cato-style over the weekend, check out this clip of senior fellow Jerry Taylor making the case against "green" subsidies:

5 Ways Women Can Save the World

In the world today we can do our part to ’save the world.’ If each person takes on just one of these ideas, the world is well on its way to becoming a better place for all of us. We need to prepare the Earth for ourselves as well as those we are leaving behind, our most important resource, of course, this is our children, our legacy . Care2.com is an amazing website which illustrates wholesome and natural living while combining that our with the everyday lives. Here is a great article about the ways in which we, as women (and men) can do our part in helping to save the world.
Another very important way to give back is to find a cure for many diseases such as some childhood cancers, cerebral palsy and other spinal cord injuries. We can bank our baby’s umbilical...

Imagine yourself outside. The sky is bright blue, the sun is sparkling and the air feels crisp and cool.
Maybe you’re walking along the beach, feeling the warm sand on your bare feet. Perhaps you’re riding your bike in a park, surrounded by hundred-year-old trees and singing birds. Or maybe you’re pinching the dirt as you dig through the backyard to plant a few flowers.
Being outdoors at a park, the beach or even just a few feet from our doorsteps can feel both relaxing and invigorating.
In fact, research has shown that participating in physical activity in the great outdoors can do a world of good for your psyche.

When analyzing ten studies with 1,252 participants, UK researchers found that outdoor activities like walking, gardening and bike riding helped boost the mood and self-es...

Do you have a Potty Mouth?
Boys with the baddest breath may have the biggest erections!

Giving your guy some mouthwash might make for a really good kiss, but later in the bedroom, it’s his erection you may miss!
Why? Well, bacteria in the mouth convert nitrates into nitrites, and when we swallow them, gastric acids convert nitrites into the essential metabolic chemical nitric oxide (N.O.). Nitric oxide can act as an antioxidant, but also the body uses it to keep arteries properly dilated. This is how Viagra works - by raising nitric oxide levels and thereby easing blood flow to the penis. So killing these important bacteria can have some significant side effects.
Maybe we don’t kill the germs, we just mask the smell?

Maybe a little gum might freshen the breath? No...

By Ilya ShapiroAs Congress debates cap-and-trade, new fuel standards, and subsidies for "green" companies, some still feel that political solutions to global warming are not moving fast enough. In the present case, American Electric Power Co. v. Connecticut, eight states and New York City sued several public utilities (including the federal Tennessee Valley Authority), alleging that their carbon dioxide emissions contribute to global warming.
This is the third major lawsuit to push global warming into the courts (another being Comer v. Murphy Oil USA, in which Cato also filed a brief). All of these suits try to use the common law doctrine of nuisance—which, for example, lets you sue your neighbor if his contaminated water flows onto your land and kills your lawn—to attack carbon emitt...

Okay, I did not watch the whole Super Bowl, but I did see the end, and a Kim Kardashian commercial.
Since the Bengals were not going to be in the competition, not in anyone’s imagination, I did not really care who won, but after a short chat with my son, decided to be a cheesehead. I like the hats. Now I get to bask in the winner’s glory. Football is pretty good stuff.
Now I can get back to the non-football activities, like watching Masterpiece Theater.

Sports fans may literally live and die on their team’s victories, according to researchers who examined cardiac mortality rates after the home team won and lost the Super Bowl.
Total and cardiac mortality rates in Los Angeles County increased after the football team’s 1980 Super Bowl loss but overall mortality fell after the 1984 the team’s Super Bowl win, researchers concluded from a review of death certificates reported in Clinical Cardiology.
First, authors gave a clinical review. Stress causes a cardiac cascade. The sympathetic nervous system increases and releases catecholamines. This triggers a rise in heart rate and blood pressure, and ventricular contractility increases oxygen demand, causing blood the sheer against and fracture atherosclerotic plaque, the authors...

The last time the Packers were in the Super Bowl, in the mid-1990′s, I didn’t go; I was in my30′s and I figured I’d go another time. Now I’m in my 50′s. The way things go, the Pack may never get there again in my lifetime.

I suppose I could start a fund– send Junig to the SuperBowl to fight addiction! Think it would fly?

By Jason KuznickiRadley Balko writes:
[I]t’s worth remembering that the government initiates violence against its own citizens every day in this country, citizens who pose no threat or harm to anyone else. The particular policy that leads to the sort of violence… is supported by nearly all of the politicians and pundits decrying anti-government rhetoric on the news channels this morning. (It’s also supported by Sarah Palin, many Tea Party leaders, and other figures on the right that politicians and pundits are shaming this weekend.)
I hope Rep. Giffords—and everyone wounded yesterday—makes a full recovery. It’s particularly tragic that she was shot while doing exactly what we want elected officials to do—she was making herself available to the people she serves. And of course...

I have therefore now resigned from the incinerator campaign, and have passed the EcoIvy site over to the local community to run, since I cannot afford to put the new company in any compromising commercial position as a result of my own personal campaigning elsewhere in the industry. southeastern U.S., the growing season is more or less year-round. But
what about the rest of us?

Where I live in Maryland, for example, not much grows in the winter.
So how do we get our five-a-day without resorting to fruits and
vegetables that have been trucked in from California or flown all the
way from South America? Growing your own sprouts (or "micro-greens") can
provide you with fresh, crisp greens throughout the winter. And what
could be more local than your own kitchen windowsill? All you need

The recession in the industrialized countries was big enough to cause a small global decline in carbon dioxide emissions. In a paper published today in Nature Geoscience, the authors found that despite the major financial crisis that hit the world last year, global CO2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuel in 2009 were only 1.3 per cent below the record 2008 figures. This is less than half the drop predicted a year ago. The industrialized nations saw big drops in CO2 emissions. 8.6% for UK is much deeper than GDP figures would lead one to expect. The global financial crisis severely affected western economies, leading to large reductions in CO2 emissions. For example, UK emissions were 8.6% lower in... (Source: FuturePundit)

This article may help but one may also consider seeing a dentist.
With all the whitening and brightening products available for your teeth, it’s easy to forget that cosmetics aren’t enough to achieve a healthy mouth.
There’s regular brushing and flossing, of course, but your teeth and gums need even more.
Like the rest of your body, good health in your mouth starts with getting the right dietary nutrients. What you eat makes a difference in whether your gums, teeth and the bone they attach to are able to stand strong against plaque bacteria that can cause disease.
Among the dental health nutritional standouts:

Calcium: The more milk, cheese and yogurt you consume, the less likely you are to develop periodontal, or gum, disease, a chronic bacterial infection. Calcium is i...

By David BoazJoshua Green writes in the Atlantic, after discussing the Austrian economists’ views in 1929 on what to do about the not-yet-great depression:
Herbert Hoover’s Treasury secretary, Andrew Mellon, offered similar counsel, famously urging Hoover to “liquidate” and “purge the rottenness out of the system.” But this failed to stop the catastrophe.
That’s true. And you know, here’s a general rule: Absolutely nothing that a treasury secretary says to a president will affect the real economy if the president ignores his advice and does something else.
Hoover didn’t cut federal spending, he doubled it. He established the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. He propped up wages and prices. Indeed, he launched the New Deal. And Green is right: In the fac...

Like so many other city-dwellers around the country, I've caught the gardening bug. My little vegetable patch has grown to the extent that it now supplies the majority of our produce from June to September. So I was aghast to see my city singled out by name in this recent article on the possible risk of lead poisoning from food grown in urban gardens. According to Gabriel Filippelli, the soil in urban areas may be high in lead and other heavy metals, either from automobile exhaust, industrial activity, or paint from older structures.( Even though the buildings may be repainted or long gone, the paint may linger in the soil.) YIKES!Filippelli recommends that home gardeners have an inexpensive soil test to determine whether their soil contains any harmful metals. Good advice--esp...

I like products that make me feel good: Green tea, for instance. It’s full of antioxidants that do my body good, and the caffeine doesn’t hurt, either. But every once in a while I catch myself staring blankly at a fortune cookie-esque quote on my tea bag or under the lid of my kombucha, and wondering: “What the hell?” Most products don’t feel the need to provide my daily affirmations, so why do certain foods and drinks take it upon themselves to remind me to be compassionate and virtuous?
Here are a few things my tea has talked to me about lately…Do you find these messages inspiring or annoying? Tell us in the comments section, below:

By Alan ReynoldsI was a bit critical of Laura Tyson’s New York Times article on “Why We Need a Second Stimulus.” Apparently I wasn’t nearly critical enough.
The Nation and National Public Radio are advising President Obama to “stop listening to infrastructure-phobic advisers like Larry Summers and start taking counsel from Laura Tyson, a member of his Economic Recovery Advisory Board who argues that $1 trillion in infrastructure investment is needed over the next five years.”
At The Atlantic, senior editor (and Boston Globe columnist) Joshua Green thinks Laura Tyson’s article “underscored what a loss it is for the Obama administration that it couldn’t manage to find a place for her on its economic team.” Mr. Green can’t imagine why a Berkeley professor who ...

If you’re always looking for the next green product or earth-friendly how-to, you might be overlooking some less obvious eco-friendly tools: Sharing and community. Rachel Botsman and Roo Rogers, authors of just-released What’s Mine Is Yours: The Rise of Collaborative Consumption, say that in light of the global financial crisis, it’s time to use online social networks to deepen our sense of community, stewardship, and shared experience – and move away from hyper-consumption in society.
Facebook-haters, listen up: They say that using online communities can make us feel more connected, share experiences, and even share our stuff so that we feel less need to consume and produce waste. They hope to inspire local communities to engage in “collaborative consumption&#822...

My week at Green Mountain at Fox Run came and went super fast. In my last few moments at this wonderful women-only healthy lifestyle retreat, I took some time to reflect on my take-aways from my short stay.
1. You are not alone. I think so many times people feel isolated when their trying to lose weight. They’re living inside their head and bodies — wanting things like less pain, to feel better, less judgment from themselves and others. I think that when you arrive here you realize there are other anxious, lonely, and frustrated women here too. You can start the process of changing your mindset and behaviors together. Knowing there is support and community is very comforting. I met a group of women who were strangers, became friends over 4 weeks, and are already planning their ...

It’s been a great week at Green Mountain at Fox Run! If you have not read my earlier posts, please catch yourself up!
I wanted to describe what a typical day is like here… so here it goes. You wake up and get ready for the day – workout clothes is the attire of choice as you’ll be sweating before 11 a.m. for sure! If you like your morning coffee, you can get that bright and early at 7 a.m. and breakfast will begin anywhere from 7:15/7:45 depending on the schedule of the day. This is a great time to practice eating for hunger and mindfulness while eating. (I learned quickly to leave my blackberry and laptop in the room or I wouldn’t get food — how’s that for conditioning?!)
After breakfast you either have education classes on behavior, fitness, or n...

like hundreds and hundreds of bummed-out people recently did on China’s National Highway 110 outside Beijing. Nothing was moving for more than 60 miles. Drivers were playing board games in the middle of the highway. And all involved were lucky, because the tie-up was actually supposed to last for more than a month. Blame road construction and freight traffic for this vehicular madness. Oh, and the fact that there are a lot of people in China. But somehow, the whole mess just magically cleared up this week. All righty then: So no one else on earth is allowed to complain about their work commute for a good long while.

I’m on my third day at Green Mountain at Fox Run in Ludlow, VT. Catch up on my blogs: learn more about the resort or learn about why I’m here and what check in was like.
Fitness
Yesterday I had to do a training run in the morning — 16 miles in the hills of the mountains. It was glorious! I used www.mapmyrun.com and the expertise of the wonderful fitness staff to help me. I’m running Chicago marathon 10/10/10 and my schedule has been a bit hectic so I wanted to take a chance to run in the cool air. That’s something to keep in mind. If you aren’t sure if this place is for you, give them a call and ask. If you want to work on your body image, but you are pretty good with the exercise, you can do running on your own — trail running on the Appalachian t...

Egg Recall: A half billion eggs from just two farms?!

The size and scope of the current salmonella-tainted egg recall is overwhelming. But the detail that staggers me is that the half billion eggs involved all came from just two farms: Wright County Egg and Hillandale Farms of IowaSee Also: Don't Panic: What You Need to Know About the Recent Egg RecallThe FDA is still investigating to determine what caused the outbreak. It may have been contaminated feed, poor hygiene practices, or just plain bad luck. But look at what happens when you have a single "farm" distributing hundreds of millions of eggs across dozens of states.
Organic Beauty Products: 5 Things You Should Know

“All natural. Certified organic. Made from natural ingredients. Pure botanicals. Chemical free.”
You might guess I’m standing in the farmers market. Nope. I’m in the “Health and Beauty” aisle at Target. The ubiquitous all-things-natural trend has overtaken the cosmetic industry. How do you know what’s real and what’s marketing hype? Here are five things you should know about organic beauty product labels:
1. Labels that say “natural ingredients” or “botanicals” are not certified organic. These statements are not regulated. Most natural ingredients used in beauty products are actually modified in a lab. Truly botanical ingredients, like you’d pick in your garden, are usually unstable and would spoil like food.
2. Natural doesn’t always mean be...

Checking In at Green Mountain at Fox Run – Part 1

The home page at Green Mountain at Fox Run says it all:

Imagine a life free of weight worries

For many people, that above promise sounds too good to be true. With 50% of all women constantly dieting and 90% of all diets failing after spending, oh, $33 MILLION a year on wasteful “gimmicks” full of empty promises, it’s no wonder most women get a little jaded to the notion they could possibly “live a life free of weight worries”.
Well, I’m spending the next week going through the Green Mountain experience to find out if it’s true — and I’ll be blogging all about it.
What Is Green Mountain? And what is it NOT?
From my experience so far — and I’ve only been here 12 hours (with 8 of them sleeping) — Green Mountain is a pla...

Finland would like to create the world’s first “green highway.” It would have service stations with charging ports for electric cars and gas pumps with biofuel made of waste and other local resources. “Smart” lighting is also an idea that would be incorporated — lights would be switched off at entryways that are empty of cars, and lights along the highway would adjust to weather conditions. The country wants to create a model for a green highway that could be copied around the world.
What other eco-friendly elements would you like to see incorporated into the highway?

We’re addicted to those email coupon services — a full-body massage for $20? Yes, please. And now a new one has us excited for the future of eco-friendly shopping: ethicalDeal.com. Dubbed the “Green Groupon,” ethicalDeal offers exclusive discounts on the best green things to do, see, and buy.
For now, the service is only available for deals in Vancouver, Canada, but we’re hoping ethicalDeal will come to a city near us very soon. (Are you listening, ethicalDeal?) Anything that makes living a green life more affordable is a service that the entire continent (and world) can use.

Eco-Unfriendly: Why Don't More Magazines Use Recycled Paper?

While many magazines are panicking about the continuing rise of digital media, which is resulting in new business models and more online content, the vast majority of mags don’t seem to be adapting to the green movement. And that doesn’t necessarily mean going paperless — it could simply mean printing on recycled paper, which is available for the same price as the paper they already use.
Only 200 of the 17,000 magazines published in the U.S. use recycled paper. (Is your jaw on the floor?) One mainstream magazine that takes advantage of recycled paper is Shape, which prints on 35% post-consumer paper. Once the magazine made the switch to recycled paper, readers were thrilled.
For all their international influence, Condé Nast publications aren’t so eco-...

BPA Found In Receipts: Now We Really Hate Tracking Our Spending

If you know us, you know we like to freak out about BPA. But our freakouts aren’t unwarranted: BPA is an endocrine disrupter that is linked to health issues in men, women, and babies. Plus, the stuff is hard to avoid: it’s in pretty much all canned foods and many plastic bottles and containers. And according to a new study, BPA was even present on 40% of receipts collected from supermarkets, ATMs, gas stations, and retail chains. In some cases, the levels of BPA found were 1,000 times greater than the BPA found in the lining of canned foods.
Ugh. We throw our receipts all over the place. They rub all over our groceries on the way home from the market and we keep them in our purse for months, right up against our lip gloss. While it’s not clear if the BPA...

The . Most people spend 90% of their life indoors — pretty depressing, huh? The Barenaked Ladies, co-founders of the Green Music Group (You might remember them as the nonprofit that brought you a yearlong supply of Ben and Jerry’s.) have another challenge for you: They want you do make that statistic obsolete by heading into the great outdoors. Just take a photo of yourself enjoying nature, and if they like yours the most, you’ll win a $1,000 gift card for a Sierra Club hiking, camping, or kayaking trip.
Upload your photo here by July 30. Check out the video below from Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson to find out more.

But we still feel pangs of guilt when we leave our computers on – eating energy – for long stretches of time while we’re doing other things. Here’s where the ecobutton™ comes in. It’s a light-up button that plugs into our computers, and every time we need to step away or take a phone call, we can hit the button and our computer will instantly go into its most energy-efficient power-save mode. Then when we’re ready to get back on our computers, we can just hit any key and we’ll be right back where we left off.
The ecobutton™ software will also let us know how many carbon units and how much power and money we saved by putting our...

A 17-year-old in Glendora, California, is Blisstree’s new role model. He started with an old cell phone, then used Craigslist to trade his way to an iPod. Then to some dirt bikes, then a few cars and trucks, and eventually, a Porsche. The whole process took him two years, and, obviously, a lot of patience. He’s also living a pretty green life. He didn’t waste anything — he always found someone who needed what he had.
Would you have the patience to trade online for two years with a goal in mind? We never thought that driving a Porsche could be eco-friendly, but now we’re having second thoughts.

General public opinion is that the current energy crisis is a man’s problem (like drinking milk from the carton or B.O.), but a survey by the Women’s Council on Energy and the Environment shows that 90% of women are enthusiastic about solar energy playing a serious role in our country’s environmental future. And why shouldn’t we care? Women have always looked for innovative solutions to tough problems.
That’s why One Block Off the Grid (1BOG), a free service that helps homeowners transition to solar power, is hosting a free webinar to help women decide if solar energy is right for them. You’ll find out a lot of info about how to go solar in your home, and the environmental and economic benefits of converting to a solar-powered energy sy...

10 Things We Want to Do This Weekend

The sweet, sweet weekend is almost here. What are your plans? We’ve got several things in mind for our two days off:

Drink a glass of wine.
Our favorite dietician says that we should drink a glass of wine over a can of Coke. We promise we’ll stick to one glass. Really.

Make our muscles sore — and like it.
We’re going to get in at least one good workout this weekend, and you can bet we’ll savor the burn.

Watch some Oprah.
Sometimes we just want to sit back and see what Her Majesty has to say. Even though she isn’t always right.

Buy a really big energy-efficient TV.
Okay, so maybe we won’t actually buy it. But we can definitely walk around the air-conditioned electronics store and stare at Energy Star-certified 50-inchers.

Go dancing.
It’s a...

Think about everything you’ve thrown out today so far. A lot of crap, right? The average person tosses four pounds of trash a day. But get this: An eco-friendly couple in Oregon created just four pounds of trash over 365 days. They decided to go debris-free for an entire year, and through recycling, buying locally grown food, and composting, they accumulated around 75 pieces of small trash during that time. Crazy. Could you do it?

We’ve heard of cork board, cork shoes, even cork furniture. But there’s another eco-friendly product made of recycled cork that we hadn’t heard of until now — cork purses. But, man — were we missing out. We love the understated elegance of Peasants and Travelers‘ cork Doctor’s Bag, which we found while browsing Eco Salon.
It’s fashioned from remnants of wine bottle corks from Portugal that have been smashed and laminated, but the material is flexible and waterproof. The rest of the bag is made from reclaimed materials, like its cotton dress shirt lining. And at $150, it’s a forever piece that isn’t too much of an investment.

When it’s a beach day, we definitely can use a little shelter from the sun, wind, and unexpected torrents of rain (Sometimes we forget to check the weather, okay?) If only we could have this beautiful Folding Beach Hut, created by design student Josif Neema. It neatly closes up into a portable, box structure.
We found this sweet little shelter while browsing The Alternative Consumer’s gallery of green architectural concepts. Check it out for some other innovative and eco-friendly design ideas.

Verizon Opens Green Store: An Empty Gesture?

photo: Thinkstock
Verizon Wireless announced plans to open a state-of-the-art green store in the Bank of America Tower in New York City. The Bank of America Tower is certified from the Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — so, basically, it’s super green. But cell phones are definitely not.
A Huffington Post article suggests that it would be more beneficial to the environment for Verizon to have a “Turn Off Your Cellphone Hour” rather than open up one eco-friendly storefront. What do you think? Is it hypocritical for a company that sells a not-eco friendly product to operate out of a green store? Or does every little green effort count?

It’d be handy to tote around all your belongings wherever you went, but could you downsize everything you own to fit into this small canvas tent? That’s what Lehman B, a self-proclaimed “do-tank,” has done with his miniature camper called Supertramp. His home is attached to a bike, so he can change locations, and it includes a bed and a wood-burning stove. Ignoring the obvious fire hazard, would you be able to live like this? We’re not big fans of dieting. But sometimes even just watching what you eat sucks. Nothing’s worse than the feeling you get when you want chocolate, but know you can’t have it. (Okay, the BP oil spill, earthquake in Haiti, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan might be worse.) With these tips to stay full while eating less, you may be able to treat yourself once in a while.
1. Eat protein for breakfast. Eating a lean protein at breakfast keeps you fuller than other nutrients, because your body takes more time to digest and absorb it. Try low-fat yogurt or egg whites. But not mixed — that would be gross.
2. Swallow some spuds. The starch in potatoes resists digestive enzymes, which means it takes longer for your body to break it down. Potat...

Your doctor has told you not to use tanning beds anymore. Your skin is beginning to show more aging than your age should have. You have a family history of skin cancer and want to avoid it. Whatever your reason, you have decided to look at self-tanners as an alternative.
I applaud that decision, but remember to use safe sun practices and/or sunscreens as self-tanners offer no protection to your skin from UVA or UVB rays.
According to About.com:Chemistry, self-tanners have been around in some form since 1960:
In 1960, Coppertone introduced its first sunless tanning product — QT® or Quick Tanning Lotion. This lotion produced an overall orange effect. Today’s sunless tanning products produce much more realistic results. (more…)

Your dog doesn’t drive a car, use electronics in an office building, or drink bottled water (he doesn’t, does he?), which sounds pretty eco-friendly to us. But according to Time to Eat the Dog? The Real Guide to Sustainable Living, dogs are worse for the earth than SUVs. We’ll have to read the book to find out exactly why, but we’re guessing it has to do with unsustainable pet food and plastic toys. Eco Salon suggests that if you aren’t already a dog-owner, you may want to try a more eco-friendly pet like a hamster, canary, fish, or cat.
But…but…but…We love dogs. We think that as long as you try to make your pet’s life as green as you can, you should adopt that puppy you’ve been visiting in the shelter. After all, who el...

Taking a half-day off to volunteer sounds like a cakewalk compared to an afternoon stuck in your cube. The added benefits? It could even improve your job performance. A University of Florida study showed that workers who have permission to do public service work harder, speak well about their employer in public, take less time off work, and are happier.
Sounds like a win-win-win situation. If your employer let you take off some of your work day to volunteer, what kind of nonprofit would you like to help out?

We know we were just talking about rollerblades being such a throwback, but our dorky secret wish has come true: Rollerblades could be making a comeback. An eco-friendly comeback, to be exact. K2 Skates has created a pair of “Eco” rollerblades. Its soft boot, laces, and webbing are made from recycled plastic bottles; the frame is made of bamboo. While K2 admits that the skate isn’t entirely green, there isn’t any PVC in them, which is a huge plus. We know the truly green thing to do would be to make our own rollerskates rather than buy a brand new pair, but still, doesn’t the bamboo look purty?

Who couldn’t use a cool ten mill? We wouldn’t mind it. That dough could be yours if you figure out an effective way to clean up the BP oil spill in the Gulf. It’s a pretty daunting task, but if the future of the oceans don’t motivate you, maybe this will:
The X Prize Foundation, a nonprofit that offers prizes to spur technological innovation, is offering the reward. Now if only they could figure out a way to persuade BP to actually accept some help with cleaning up this environmental disaster.

On a recent trip to the beach, we were wishing for some small, portable speakers to plug into our iPods. Who knew our wish would be granted so adorably? This little eco-friendly cutie is handmade out of natural cut apricot wood, can be recharged via a USB connector, and can plug right into your headphone jack.
We wonder how it sounds. Though, honestly, we might trade sub-par sound quality for this awesome design. It can be yours for $44.50 on Delight.

We love talking about natural ways to do household chores, because this means our home is one less place where we need to use toxic chemicals. (It does not mean we like to do household chores, however.) And if we can extend that lack of toxins to our garden, well, even better. Check out this video for tips on natural pest control:

As Eco Salon points out, you’d be hard pressed to find a girl who cares about the environment, but doesn’t care at all about how her skin looks. That’s where Kaia Naturals’ Bamboo Facial Cleanser Cloths come in. These eco-friendly beauty bombshells are made from 100% soft, sustainable bamboo, and contain cleanser, toner, and eye makeup remover – and they don’t require water.
Here’s what the cloths don’t contain: alcohol, synthetic fragrances, parabens, or sulfates. Where can you get these supposedly miracle wipes? Why, right here.

Yep – that Ben and that Jerry. They’re teaming up for a challenge with Bonnie Raitt and the Green Music Group to fight disposable plastic bottle use and promote reusable bottles. Sounds good and green, right? But wait. We didn’t even mention the best part: You could win a year’s supply of free ice cream.
Just take the pledge from the Plastic Pollution Coalition, and then upload a photo of yourself using your reusable water bottle. The deadline is July 2, 2010, so you’d better go green fast.

Eco-Friendly Living: Natural Swimming Pools We Want

Every summer, we spend hours dreaming of the massive, crystal-clear swimming pool we’d lounge at for hours a day, if only we could get that winning Lotto ticket. But this summer, our daydreams have taken a more eco-friendly route. Instead of lusting after chemical-filled traditional swimming pools, we’re drooling over natural swimming pools.
Natural swimming pools require no chemicals, and they’re self-cleaning. Different installation companies use different methods to ensure cleanliness, like aquatic vegetation, UV filters, or waterfalls. The pools even ward off mosquitoes, because the water is constantly moving. We’ll be using the gorgeous pool below to fulfill our fantasies, but you can browse a full slideshow of inspired natural pools at The Daily Green.

Donating $10 toward the Gulf oil spill restoration efforts hardly seems like a tall order, but it’s especially easy to let go of your cash when you get a cool “peliCAN” t-shirt from Threadless in return. All proceeds from the shirts, designed by Frederik Wepener and Ross Zietz, go toward the Gulf Restoration Network (healthygulf.org), and they’re available for men and women. We say get one for yourself and a friend (or two). But that’s because we love pelicans.

Scent-branding is part of the marketing plan for several retail outlets, hotels, and even casinos. Just step into a W Hotel and note the eerily similar smell to the last one you visited. Like color and light, smells can evoke emotions, making consumers happy and thus more likely to spend, return, and build brand loyalty.
But one scent company is actually applying this to a living space: International Flavors and Fragrances has created a special scent that they’re planning to pump into a low-income housing building in the South Bronx, New York, filling the hallways and common spaces with – we kid you not – L’Eau Vert du Bronx du Sur. The “Green Water of South Bronx” is meant to evoke happiness and optimism for the 200 building residents.

I hadn't been away from my 5 year old son in, well, 5 years, and presenting in front of an audience of over 500, after working mostly on my own for several years, was a bit of a challenge. I had booked myself onto a short workshop that was taking place in my local woods called 'Trees for Health' a few days before I was due to leave. What better way to celebrate the weekend than a perfectly summery cake.

Make our bathrooms greener.
No, we don’t mean the paint color. We’re getting excited about our new fancy low-flow showerheads. We might even start singing.

Eat our fruit frozen.
We’ll try anything to beat the heat. A smoothie and some frozen grapes for a Saturday afternoon snack sound amazing.

Take a break from meat.
Our weekend will be filled with leisurely meals crammed with vegetables and whole grains – we got enough meat and dairy this week.

The world must know every exciting thing we’re doing this weekend. And now that we can have...

Lipton Green Tea With Citrus and Fish: Commercials We Don't Get

Much to our chagrin, we couldn’t get that stupid “Give me back that Filet O’ Fish” song out of our head for weeks when that McDonald’s commercial was airing. Thankfully, we somehow doubt that this Lipton Green Tea commercial will have the same effect. The song definitely isn’t as catchy, and, above all, this fish really gives us the creeps. He has teeth. And a tongue. And don’t even get us started on those oysters. The whole thing makes us crabby.
What the hell do fish have to do with green tea anyway? We’d rather see little tea bags singing and dancing or something. Anything but fish with human mouths. But we have a feeling we’ll be seeing this sea creature again soon – in our nightmares.

Although Nairobi is as soccer-crazed as the rest of the world right now, residents of Kibera, the largest slum in Africa, didn’t think they’d be able to watch the 2010 FIFA World Cup, because they don’t have electricity. That is, until Solafrica, a Swiss nonprofit, provided them with a portable solar power station to run a large TV.
And Solafrica didn’t stop there. In partnership with Greenpeace, they trained local young people to make simple solar-powered LED lamps to replace the kerosene ones being used in Kibera. Solafrica might be our first official nonprofit crush of the World Cup. If they figure out a way to recycle all the vuvuzelas being used in South Africa, we’d let them wear our pin.

Singing your favorite Motown singles while you suds up might not seem like a big deal, but your bathtime serenades are likely keeping you in the shower longer, eating up unnecessary water and energy. Green Thing’s Short Sharp Showercast is designed to get you showering faster and saving water, with brief, fun playlist.
Bonus: The list has songs from several lesser-known bands and singers, so you can have something other than Beyoncé stuck in your head all day.

The World Cup is rapidly approaching, and South Africa is keeping it eco-friendly. Five stadiums that will be used in the games all embody some environmentally-friendly practices. Two are new, two are old, and one is remodeled, but all are leaning toward being as “green” as possible in their own specific ways.
The new stadiums were built with solar power capabilities; are flexible enough to be used for other events in the future; and one even has a rainwater collection system. While the older stadiums aren’t equipped with solar panels or anything high-tech, they’re age helps make them environmentally friendly. Rather than tearing down perfectly good, usable stadiums, opting to use preexisting structures is definitely a responsible choice. Finally...

These piles are a combination of bills, documents you feel you should keep but probably won’t ever need, catalogs, junk mail, and receipts. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed among all these former trees, especially if the whole thing is a disorganized mess. And wouldn’t your life be so much more eco-friendly if you could cut out paper entirely? Check out Lifehacker’s Guide to Going Paperless:

You’ve probably stayed in some pretty seedy places in your lifetime. A Bates-esque motel off of the highway with roaches? Perhaps a gem in the middle of nowhere that reeked of B.O.? No matter how disgusting your travel accommodations have been, we guarantee you’ve never stayed anywhere as trashy as the eco-friendly Save the Beach Hotel in Europe.
This Rome hotel is made from 12,000 kilograms (about 2,645 pounds) of garbage that was collected from Europe’s beaches. It’s part of a campaign from an environmental group called Save the Beach, and it’s trying to give beach-goers a look at what their shores will soon look like if they don’t stop littering on them.

Your old cell phone can actually do something positive and earth-friendly – and not just take up space in a drawer. Thanks to Plant My Phone, you can recycle your phone, and the company will use the money from the sold materials to plant as many trees as they can. An average phone that you’ve had for two years will plant 15 trees, while a first-generation iPhone in good condition will plant as many as 79. (Plus, you can download a prepaid shipping label from Plant My Phone’s website.) Check out this chart to see how many trees your old phone could potentially create.
Currently, only 10% of the 140 million cell phones that become “old” are recycled each year – the rest just sit in landfills or homes. Plant My Phone is a much better (and more tec...

It sounds like an aquatic sci-fi flick: Heroic robot fish lead distressed regular fish to safety. But this scenario could actually happen, thanks to Maurizio Porfiri, a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He hopes that his remote control fish could lead helpless fish stuck in murky, oil-filled waters to safety (which would’ve come in handy in the Gulf of Mexico thanks to the BP oil spill).
Apparently, schools of fish will “trust” and follow an impostor, as long as it’s silent and moves like a fish. Porfiri’s robots aren’t ready for action yet, but it’s a cool idea that could have many successful implementations in the future. Aside from an oil spill situation, robots could be used to guide birds to s...

Sex and the (Green) City: Is Carrie Bradshaw Eco-Friendly?

photo: WENN.com
Though Sex And The City 2 appears to be flailing at the box office, Carrie Bradshaw may embody the eco-friendly movement better than any other character in theaters right now, according to Grist’s Lisa Hymas. Despite Carrie’s shopping habits, Hymas argues that Carrie lives a very “green” life by choosing not to have children, not owning a car, working from home, and traveling by air infrequently.
But we don’t buy that those practices negate Carrie’s retail addiction. The woman literally never wears the same clothes (or shoes) twice, and we doubt that she ever got her Manolos secondhand on eBay. Oh, Carrie. You may unintentionally minimize your carbon footprint, but deep green would be such a good color on you.

Since we just learned that those who brush their teeth fewer than twice a day have a 70% greater risk of heart disease, we’ll be stocking up on toothpaste from now on. So we may as well learn some new uses for it, which will save money, and help us avoid using chemical-filled cleaning products. Check out this handy list of alternative uses for toothpaste, thanks to Care2.
1. Put a drop of toothpaste on a bug bite, sore, or blister to stop itching and decrease swelling. It will dry the blemish out, and make it heal faster.
2. If you burn yourself on a cookie sheet or anything else that results in a minor (unopened) burn, apply toothpaste delicately to the burn after it develops. The toothpaste will cool the sting and stop the burn from opening or oozing.

I read somewhere that a large number of Nobel Prize winners become depressed after receiving their honor because their sense of purpose has been taken away. They have to grieve their pre-Nobel Prize life and find a new way of being, something to get excited about that will get you out of bed in the morning.
The same is true, to some extent, when you graduate. With Commencement often comes an emptiness, a sense of loss. Much joy and relief, yes. But also a “what the hell do I do now?” response.
For highly sensitive persons like myself, every kind of life transition — be it graduation, a new job, a baby — comes with a few challenges and their offspring. How to gracefully maneuver between point A and point B? Like you would with any other mourning process. Because yo...

Check out our roundup of three allegedly all-natural hand sanitizer gels.
Sure, instant hand sanitizer gels have made it a little easier to stay clean on-the-go. They’re great for hospital waiting rooms and other places where germs run rampant, or after your ride on public transportation. But hand sanitizer gels won’t work unless you use them properly. Here’s how:
1. Buy hand sanitizers that contain at least 60% alcohol – anything less won’t kill viruses and bacteria as well.
2. Squirt a lot onto your hand – doctors recommend a blob the size of a silver dollar. There needs to be enough gel to wet the entire back and front of your hands, since a sanitizer only kills germs with which it has direct contact. Rub the gel into your hands for at least...

If you stop and think about it, you use a lot of electronics everyday. Your computer, your phone – even your garage door opener. Did you ever think about how green those electronics are? Greenpeace just released their quarterly Guide to Greener Electronics, which ranks companies by the environmental impact of their products. Want to know who you should buy your next phone from? Check it out:
1. Nokia. The Japanese manufacturer held its spot as number one from last quarter’s guide. The company does not use brominated compounds, chlorinated flame retardants, and antimony trioxide – all harmful to to the environment and humans – in any of its new products.
2. Sony Ericcson. Sony comes in second for wins points for skipping use of PVC or brominated flame retar...

The news that retinyl palmitate, a form of Vitamin A found in some sun screens, could actually accelerate the growth of skin cancer has us wondering just what we can safely slather on our faces to protect them from the sun. Just in time for summer, the Environmental Working Group issued a review of 500 sunscreens, and only found 39 to be worthy of recommendation. The Daily Green narrowed down those 39 into 21 great natural sunscreens, all free of retinyl palmitate and oxybenzone, a compound that could disrupt your hormones.

Consumer choices not only reflect price and quality preferences but also social and moral values as witnessed in the remarkable growth of the global market for organic and environmentally friendly products. Building on recent research on behavioral priming and moral regulation, we find that mere exposure to green products and the purchase of them lead to markedly different behavioral consequences. In line with the halo associated with green consumerism, people act more altruistically after mere exposure to green than conventional products. However, people act less altruistically and are more likely to cheat and steal a...

Your favorite eco-friendly company sells products made from recycled materials, but do they really keep all their practices as “green” as they can?
As Josh Dorfman (The Lazy Environmentalist) points out on The Huffington Post, some seemingly environmentally-friendly companies may not be doing all they can to actually keep up their green practices. For example, how does the company package their items? If you get the product you ordered and it’s wrapped in layers of plastic wrap and extra packing material, it’s probably a good indication that the company may not care all that much about the environment – they may just be riding the green wave.
So check on the company’s history. Search for old media mentions and see if they always upheld eco-...

CONCLUSIONSKnowing this, researchers wonder if the full spectrum of light affects your body clock. If you protect yourself from blue light, you may still have green lights resetting your clock. Perhaps we need to have smarter lighting systems that can stimulate our non-visual systems as well as our visual systems. At night, avoid bright lights and go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Soon after waking, try to get as much bright lights as possible. To work and live at your best, you must keep your internal circadian rhythm in harmony and synchronized with the environmental cues (i.e., light and dark, temperature etc). A bedroom in complete darkness will ensure a good night sleep. Ever wonder why you oversleep in a hotel room with its heave drape...

XPress Lid French Press: The Anti-Eco-Friendly Product?

Many people are trying to reduce their waste in order to jump on the eco-friendly bandwagon. Reusable bags, reusable bottles, and now reusable French presses. Hey, wait – French presses have always been reusable. Because they’re glass.
Jeff Baccetti, inventor of the “XPress Lid” by Smart Cup, thinks life would be easier (and a more fun) if coffee chains sold individual “disposable and recyclable” French presses (paper cup, plastic lid). The disposability of these one-use cups suggests that the over-caffeinated should be French pressing on-the-go, which seems cumbersome and impractical. Coffee drinkers could just use a real French press, instead of one that many will just dump in the trash, only to spend eternity taking up space in a landfil...

Ever wonder what happens to subway cars after their rush-hour commuting days are over? They become environmentalists. Out-of-service New York City train cars have been stripped and dumped into the Atlantic Ocean along the east coast in order to become artificial reefs for marine life. The cars look so much more appealing under water – we wish we could hitch a ride to work on the back of our sea turtle friend every day.

At Blisstree, we like to smell as delightful as the next woman, but we haven’t put that much thought into what’s in the perfume we spritz on every morning. Have you? We all should, according a report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Rather than list specific chemicals on bottles of perfume, many perfumes just list the ingredient, “fragrance.” This is like ingredients in your favorite soup being listed as “food.”
Looking at a sample of 17 popular perfumes, it was found that each had an average of 14 unlisted ingredients in them. In fact, the 17 fragrances contained an average of ten chemical sensitizers each, which can trigger allergies, asthma, headaches, and dermatitis when inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Food manufacturer...

It’s sitting on a high self in your pantry, ever-present and powerful – white vinegar. This all-purpose liquid has been improving lives for 10,000 years – naturally. With the current push for green household supplies, why not use vinegar – you can’t get much greener (or cheaper). Care2 put together a list of 23 surprising uses for white vinegar. You’re going to want to invest in a gold-plated spray bottle when you find out how valuable vinegar really is.
1. Add a few tablespoons of vinegar to eggs while poaching them. It will keep the whites intact.
2. If your greens are wilting, let them soak in a bowl of cold water with some vinegar to reinvigorate them. Unfortunately, spritzing vinegar on a wilting up-do doesn’t work.
3. Get onion smel...

Eco-Friendly Living: We Dig Composting

Composting is something every good eco-conscious woman knows she should do, but somehow finds a reason not to. It’s gross, you say. I live in a city, you sigh. The time for excuses is over. Thanks to Planet Green, there’s the City Girl’s Guide to Composting – but don’t worry, it works for non-urban types, too.
First you need to decide what kind of composting you want to do. Worm composting is good if you’re short on space (and don’t mind worms, obviously); hot composting is good if you’re a real go-getter and are willing to put a little more work into composting while reaping a more satisfying reward; and cold composting is good if you’d like a low-maintenance approach. You just dump the scraps into a bucket and let them s...

In writer Bret Easton Ellis’s recent interview with Vice mag, he recounts the hazards of professional success, including losing a few friends in the process:
did I lose some friends? Yeah, I totally lost friends because of it. My close friendships with male writers became more like rivalries. Suddenly, I became a problem. The book getting published in the first place freaked some of my peers out, and then when it became successful, all bets were off. I sensed a shift, but then it was confirmed eight or nine years later when we were all drunk and we were talking about it. I said, “I thought you guys were so excited for my success. You all thought I was so great and you loved me so much.” And they were like, “Bret Easton What? We hated you! We f.ing hated you! We totally resented...

Check out Enviralment, a green-minded blog that’s all about the earth, the environment, technology, and pretty much everything in between – oh, and how they’re all interconnected.
Coolest thing Enviralment told us about today? Dial4Light, a newly developed German public lighting system that lets pedestrians activate street lights with their mobile phones. Turned on to a dark alley? Punch in a code and your path will be lighted for around 15 minutes. Could this be the illuminating future for urban areas everywhere? We hope so.

Eco-Friendly Toilet Paper: Think Before You Wipe

When you think of saving the environment, you probably think of cars, gas, plastic bags, eating locally, and making sure you separate your cans from your corrugated cardboard. But what about wiping your ass? According to National Geographic, toilet paper wipes out 27,000 trees per day worldwide. That’s a lot of wood-splitting.
Though we don’t recommend you ditch downstairs hygiene altogether, we do think it’s worth spending the extra pennies – or even dollars – to buy forest-friendly TP. According to the National Resources Defense Council, if every household in the U.S. replaced just one roll of virgin fiber toilet paper (500 sheets) with a 100% recycled one, we could save 423,900 trees. Here are just 10 brands that make the NRDC’s list of top recommended toilet...

Reusable shopping bags from T Bag & Co.
We have a new girl crush and her name is ecochick. She’s based in Canada and runs an earthy-friendly shopping blog. She recommends cool books (like Organic Manifesto by Maria Rodale), tells us about pretty reusable water bottles (from SIGG and OtterBottle), and alerts us to uber-chic reusable shopping bags from companies including T Bag & Co. and Flip and Tumble. We like to think of ecochick as our go-to green shopping guru. so ecochick, will you be our new BFF?

But today we like Greenr for telling us about two super-cool eco-conscious inventions:
– The “sOccket,” a soccer ball that generates electricity the more it’s kicked around during play – developed by four Harvard women students in their engineering class (think soccer-obsessed developing nations that lack reliable electrical grids).

Can Oral Supplements Prevent Wrinkles?

I recently came across an ad in the magazine for an oral supplement that claims to fight dull, wrinkled, pimpled skin. It boasts of 11 “essential” nutrients which are mainly antioxidants plus some other ingredients. Taken daily, the pills hold promise of glowing skin in a couple of months.
I don’t know about pimples but there is growing evidence that oral antioxidants could help slow down the wrinkling process or even improve existing wrinkles. The problem is that there are a lot of antioxidants available. How do we know which ones really work? What is the best way to get them to work on the skin?
It has been shown that selenium taken at 50 to 200 micrograms daily, vitamin E at 400mg /day and vitamin C at 500-1000mg (all known antioxidants) can protect against harmful UV rays w...
