Just got back from the ASM Meeting that was in Philly last week. It was good and bad - and will write more about it soon. But what I am writing about now relates to an annoying part of the meeting. It seems ASM has sold my name/address to various entities since I have been receiving a significant amount of junk/trash advertising things associated with microbiology. I am sure ASM gets some $$$ out of this, but at what cost to the world? The last thing I want is more trash and there seems to be no way to say no to this. And on top of it, many science related publications also seem really keen on wrapping themselves in plastic. In this case I am showing Nature Methods and the ASM Microbe and even the HHMI magazine wrapped in plastic. Bad Nature. Bad ASM. Bad HHMI. Sure there may b...

Melatonin As A “Greener” Sleep Aid?

Midweek Mental Greening
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been trying melatonin as a sleep aid – not every night, mind you, but here and there.
You probably have a working knowledge of melatonin. It’s the hormone your brain’s pineal gland produces at night, when it’s dark and your body needs rest. Thus, melatonin helps your body know the difference between day and night and lends a hand with your circadian timing and sleep cycles.
Though it may not be the most environmentally green sleep aid around (your body produces it naturally but, hey, if you’re taking it orally, that means someone else is manufacturing, bottling, and selling it and it’s no longer natural – it’s synthetic) melatonin definitely seems preferable to traditional prescription and other over-the-coun...

If Charlie’d had a younger sibling, would we have decided to participate in studies like this one at the University of Washington, as noted in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:
Autism researchers at the University of Washington are seeking parents who will allow them to do brain scans of their infants.
………….
The UW scientists are looking for 84 six-month-old infants from California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Nevada and Alaska who have an older sibling who has been diagnosed with autism. They also need 34 infants with typically developing older brothers or sisters.
Each child will be scanned three times over two years.
Certainly I would have considered having a sibling of Charlie’s participate in such a study—-and then, after reading (wading...

Lessons on Going Green – GRI Amsterdam Global Conference on Sustainability and Transparency

The Global Reporting Initiative’s annual Conference on Sustainability and Transparency is like Cannes for the worldwide corporate sustainability set. First highlight: Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan’s arrival, heralded by mainstream press. The Queen is almost comically composed, graceful as a prima ballerina, and even more gorgeous in person – she greets the mayor of Amsterdam with aplomb as cameras and sound equipment crackle around her. At 2pm, Her Majesty will deliver the first keynote, announcing the creation of the “Arab Sustainability Leadership Group,” a network of Arab companies dedicated to sustainability and reporting. American healthcare organizations – to think we worried about the Pacific Rim….next year’s motto for American hospitals should be “keep your...

I've been interested in the 'greening' of healthcare for quite awhile.Sustainability will one day be an integral part of hospital strategic planning, but we're not there yet - read "Sustainability - It's a Marathon Not a Sprint."US hospitals currently lack green gurus, but I'm betting within the next 2 years we'll see the first Chief Sustainability Officers (most likely at progressive organizations that are hiring Chief Experience Officers).Without a doubt, many hospitals and healthcare systems are significantly behind the curve when it comes to sustainability efforts and greening the supply chain. Some, like Dell Childrens MC, are getting it right early, but we don't have many comprehensive examples of what's working or what we'd save by going green. If you want to learn about sustainabilit...

Happy Earth Day From World Healthcare Congress 2008

In honor of Earth Day, my personal effort is to save multiple packs of Post-Its, hundreds of cocktail napkins, programs, flyers, and any other sort of disposable material at the 3-day WHCC.The organizers are certainly helping - water stations in the hallways are stocked with glasses rather than disposable cups or water bottles.Let's see if they maintain the same green policies at tonight's networking events. And as to saving Post-Its...those of you who know me know I have a compulsive concept sketching addiction - if there's no whiteboard handy I'll go to town on any pressed fiber product in reach. As such I've decimated many many Post-Its in the pursuit of the next great blog post.Twitter, however, allows me to skip all that and virtually 'write' Post-Its (my 140 character messages) in real...
