I sometimes wonder if our focus on “doing things right” is what causes us more pain, anguish and difficulty than anything else in life. It’s almost as if those red marks on our graded assignments as kids stay with us when we become adults.
In fact, our fear of impending negative feedback often grows as we grow older. We hold our vulnerabilities even closer, wrapping them up carefully like we would a glass vase or a precious piece of china. We’re fearful of sharing our feelings. We hold back our laughter, forgetting that as kids we let it all out from our bellies to our mouths. And to shield our pain, instead of crying, confronting or expressing ourselves, we avoid loved ones when they’ve hurt us.
Yet, in order to fully live, to feel completely alive, we must f...

According to Phil Plait of Bad Astronomy you can see details when the ISS flies overhead with a decent pair of binoculars, but with an 8-inch reflector telescope and a decent video camera set up for astrophotography you can grab yourself a Youtube clip…in broad daylight:

I’ve seen the ISS fly over a couple of times on a clear, dark night, it’s quite an astounding site, especially knowing that it’s only 350 km above you when at it’s at its closest. Bizarrely, the second time I saw it I was on a camping trip with family and friends and remarking on what a fascinating sight it is, when it appeared. Happened again the third time I saw it from a pub garden. I wonder…is it alcohol induced?

To keep you skin healthy and young you need to regularly moisturize your skin, tone your skin, cleanse your skin and exfoliate it. While moisturization helps in keeping the moisture to your skin, toning helps in keeping the pores of the skin clean, thus maintaining the health of the skin, exfoliation helps in the removal of the dead cells from the skin, thus giving the skin a brand new look. Exfoliation treats the blemished skin, dark marks, clogged pores, hyper pigmentation and dry skin.
A few home made exfoliators that give a new lease of life to your skin
A natural and home made exfoliator is the ones that work best and without any side effects in comparison to the chemically prepared exfoliating products. Exfoliator is better avoided by the people who have acne prone skin as it may inc...

Sustainable Marriages = Satisfied Individuals

Want a sustainable marriage?
Some emerging research suggests that the satisfaction of each individual in the relationship may be just as important as other, more traditional factors such as communication skills and how a couple argues.
More and more, researchers are finding that happy marriages may be based in how much the relationship supports each individual in their own learning and self-growth. After all, a stagnant relationship isn’t exactly fertile ground for happiness. When we grow individually in a marriage, we also grow as a couple.
This effect isn’t done in solitude — it occurs when your partner helps open your eyes to new experiences and learn new things. That’s why trying something you’ve never done before on a date is exciting! It expands your hor...

By Roger PilonToday Politico Arena asks:
How does the Koran burning controversy relate to the Ground Zero mosque controversy?
My response:
As with the controversy over the Ground Zero mosque, Rev. Terry Jones and his tiny band of followers have a perfect right to burn Korans, but it would be well beyond insensitive to do so. Yet where are the establishment voices drawing the parallels? Where is President Obama, leaping to his defense?
Instead, we find the likes of the editorialists at the New York Times giving moral instruction to benighted New Yorkers, two-thirds of whom oppose siting a mosque at Ground Zero even as they defend Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s right to build it there. Meanwhile, last evening on the PBS NewsHour, the very essence of establishment TV, the sole guest on th...

What do you do with your leftover coffee grounds? Unless you’ve got a compost bin going, you probably toss them in the trash. If you consider the amount of coffee consumed every day around the world, that’s a lot of compost going into landfills. Shane Genzuik thinks that those grounds could be put to good use, so he started Ground to Ground — an initiative that makes grounds from coffee shops available to the public for use in their gardens and compost heaps. Coffee is also packed with nitrogen – a great fertilizer.

Jim Harper may be “put off by the domestic political ramifications” of the continuing Ground Zero mosque debate — linking to my three POLITICO Arena posts over the weekend, when the story broke, and Chris Preble’s very different Cato@Liberty post on Monday — but that’s what this debate is all about. It’s not about the law or the Constitution, at bottom, because the law is clear: we respect the right to build that mosque there, even if it would not be prudent or wise to do so.
Thus, he misses the point when he cites “conservative icon Ted Olson” who, Jim says, “expresses well how standing by our constitutional values is good counterterrorism signaling.” That may or may not be good counterterrorism signaling, but those of us who oppose this mosque being situ...

By Roger PilonThis morning POLITICO Arena asks:

Should POTUS show his cards on mosque?

My response:

Obama’s inept handling of the Ground Zero mosque controversy is perfectly consistent with so much else he’s touched during his so-far short presidency. On Friday night he waded into this local matter by miscasting it as one of high constitutional principle. Then as his defenders were shouting “Bravo!” on Saturday he pulled the rug out from under them by saying, correctly, that it was really a matter of “wisdom” – about which he wasn’t going to comment.

Maybe he’s right about that. After all, the president isn’t, or shouldn’t be, the moral compass of the nation — certainly not this president. But it’s ...

By Roger PilonPolitico Arena asks today for continued comment on Obama’s Ground Zero mosque “correction.”
My response
Well, well: What a difference a day makes. Yesterday [Friday] most POLITICO Arena contributors – including law professors, shockingly – were falling over themselves to defend President Obama’s Friday night Ground Zero mosque remarks — on constitutional principle, no less — while a very few of us were cutting through that nonsense.
Meanwhile, the president and the White House were struggling to get the word out that constitutional principle wasn’t really the point at issue here. It was, rather, the “wisdom” of building a mosque so close to Ground Zero. Now that we’re clear about that, perhaps Aren...

By Roger PilonPolitico Arena asks for comments today on President Obama’s Ground Zero Mosque remarks:
My response:
Speaking expressly “as President” last evening [Friday], Mr. Obama has weighed in on the Ground Zero Islamic mosque controversy — and blatantly misstated it.
This controversy has nothing to do with Muslims having “the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country” or with their ”right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan,” as Obama put it. Nor does it have anything to do with the First Amendment. Rather, the issue is simply one of common decency and sensitivity to the feelings of others.
The president is right about one thing: Ground Zero is “...

Michael R. Bloomberg is a former Wall Street mogul with a passion for the rights of a private property owner.
The story is about the not-really-at-Ground-Zero mosque, of course.
Bloomberg has a passion for property rights — except when the property owner wants to allow smoking on his own property or just wants to keep the property he owns even if a richer person wants it. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

But more often than not these uncomfortable feelings are not meteors at all. They aren’t streaking across my mind and crashing into my psyche. Rather, they are a thick, murky fog of thoughts and feelings that slowly but steadily eclipse my optimism. And that’s only half of it. Then I feel bad for having the thoughts. This makes it worse. Now, regardless of the form they come in, the conflict moves to an inner theater. I’m aggravated at whatever got me going in t...

As a Hispanic person and a mental health professional, I have observed that just as there are dysfunctions with one person there can also be dysfunctions with a large grouping of those persons, call it a “culture,” a “people,” a “cohort,” or other. In diversity classes we are taught to respect other cultures and not “judge’ them, yet never mind if they eat their own progeny or have sex with young little girls. Implicit in this intellectual doctrine is the rule is that we are to look the other way and not judge t...

Midweek Mental Greening
“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul alike.” - John Muir.
It’s Earth Day my friends, and I have 10 ways to celebrate that will help take care of both Mother Nature and your mental wellness.
1. Back away from the treadmill.
Lately, the weather here has been pretty rainy (and even snowy and sleety at times!), so my treadmill has gotten a lot of use. However, it’s warming up now, which means morning walks or jogs – and less electricity – are on the horizon.
2. Break ground on your garden.
April is a big month for turning your vegetable garden plan into a reality. Growing your own veggies is good for your brain, your soul, and the planet.
3. Talk with your ...

This is why I love my friend Pablo so much. While talking on the phone about death, just now.Me: "I want to be cremated. But I totally don't want to be scattered in the ocean because I am a little scared of the ocean and all the fish and stuff. I don't want to be scattered in the forest either because I don't like bugs and the cold and all that outdoorsy stuff. Maybe I should be scattered in Holt Renfrew...Nah! I can't afford to shop there. I think the place I'd be most comfortable resting eternally is in a couch. So I have to find somebody who will scatter my ashes in their nice comfy couch. Or their mattress. Something cozy."Pablo: "What about me? What should I do with my remains?"Me: "Hey! I thought we agreed that I was supposed to throw myself on your casket at your funeral.
Depression Peeking Over The Cliff

Anyone who’s had depression even once has to be aware of it creeping into their lives once more. Will it hit like a ton of bricks? Will it slide in from the back door? Everyone’s experiences are probably different, and particular to their patterns and diagnosis. One thing’s for sure. It’s still out there.
This isn’t meant to scare you, making you fearful of the slightest bad mood or sad feeling. To have feelings is to be human, though it can seem sometimes like feelings are the enemy. Being aware of what is healthy and what crosses the line to depression can help you live a full life.
How close do you get to the edge of the cliff? People with a history of depression need to remember that there is a deep canyon of pain and confusion on the map. No, this is noth...

It has been a less than fun week for me. I got sick. Quite sick. In fact 2008 will forever be remembered as The Year I Puked On My Birthday And I Wasn’t Even Drunk. And if you don’t know me then you cannot fully understand how traumatic this was on a couple levels. First of all I suffer from this pretty severely. And as such I will not get into my particular lurgie with any great details. Secondly it was my 39th birthday. The LAST YEAR I will be in my 30s. A dinner party was planned and had to be cancelled. In fact my whole birthday weekend was a complete blur of ick and grossness. I woke up Saturday (March 1-my birfday) quite early with terrible cramps. Whole torso cramps opposed to your typical gurgley tummy type situation. Only now that I am feeling better do I understand how sick...

So I like to think I am a very enlightened, tolerant and open minded sort of gal. I have my own little quirky life filled with my own little quirky likes and dislikes and as such maintain a motto of, “Whatever melts your butter.” While I may not agree with or even remotely understand others and what they do in their lives I also don’t like to harsh on anyone’s mellow by being all judgmental and shit. Everybody has to do their own thing, right? So along with being enlightened, tolerant and open minded I am also mentally about as mature as a teenaged boy. A very poorly brought up, over imaginative, and under stimulated adolescent male. Combine that with an uncontrollable reflex to joke about inappropriate things and I am exactly the wrong person to take to a funeral, bris, beat poet...

An Analysis of Not Publishing Negative Drug Studies

We examined the study after its publication and agreed that there are significant issues that must be addressed in the disclosure and publication of drug studies. Some steps have already been undertaken individually by drug companies, but they should all be required to ensure all negative study data is as readily available as the positive study data.
CL Psych has gone one step further if you’re interested in an even more in-depth analysis of the study (and its critics) in an entry entitled, Defending the Hiding of Negative Clinical Trial Data. It’s a long but thorough analysis (even though it goes off on a tangent about Vioxx). Leave it to CL Psych to tell it like it is! (Source: World of Psychology)

The first heart transplant was 40 years ago and the patient lasted a little over 2 weeks. That may not have been lengthy but it sure was ground breaking. Now 4 decades later we are performing less and less heart transplants. Why?
Could it be the ability to keep very sick hearts alive and working effectively for longer amounts of time then previous? Quite possibly! Could it be that even though there are more registered organ donors, our organs aren’t exactly what they used to be? High cholesterol, smoking, alcohol abuse and older donors… a different type of death.
What do you suppose is the solution? Well I do have 2 words for you… stem cells. I know how controversial and heated the debate is but just think what the implications could be if we were able to regenerate healt...

They come on a Saturday night to lurk around my building bothering the neighbours with their sirens and flashing lights.Stalking me under the pretext of checking on a sick old lady. Saw right through that one, I did.And then they came back on Monday night too. Jeeez, guys! Seriously, just send me some flowers or a box of chocolates. Leave the poor old lady from across the street alone.FINE! I'll go on a date with you. As long as you wear those cute boots and suspenders.
The New York Daily News is reporting that former Environmental Protection Agency chief Christie Whitman claims New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani blocked efforts to get Ground Zero workers wearing respirators.

And she said she believes illnesses killing first responders can be blamed on the city's lack of action.

"I'm not a scientist ... but I do [believe that]," she told WNBC's Brian Thompson.

"I mean, we wouldn't have been saying that the workers should wear respirators if ... we didn't think there might be health consequences."

She said the city had the responsibility to make sure workers wore respirators. But many took them off, complaining of heat. She said workers without respirators were barred from cleanup efforts at the Pentagon.

"We were certainly frustrated at not being able to...
