Carcinogens Found in Gulf Water Are Only A Small Sign Of Toxins in All Water

There doesn’t need to be a toxic oil spill in your backyard in order for your water to be poisoned. The truth is that much of our water is poisoned already. So, a recent article in the Huffington post that showed that there were high levels of carcinogens found in water in the Gulf, isn’t that surprising.
The reasons for that are simple:…

There was a major oil spill that will affect water, wildlife and people for decades to come,
And all water is toxic to levels that it shouldn’t be…everywhere!(1)

We have people in the United States today dying of cancer at ages so much younger than ever before. 1500 people die every day in the United States from the disease. But did you know that another recent finding just taught scientists that cancer didn’t exist thousands of y...

In the middle of January, like now, it is very easy to get into the mindset that this gray weather is going to last forever. Since I am a (very) amateur birder, though, I also know that the spring migration is about to start probably within the next couple of weeks.
The birds won’t hit our continent for a while, though. Entirely self -propelled animals. Actually, come to think of it, humans are the only animals that can travel in non-self-propelled ways. Still have respect, though, for flocks of millions of tiny birds propelling themselves across the Gulf of Mexico to summer in our back yards.
Renewed resolutions to haul myself around the thickets of Boulder Creek or up in the mountains near Nederland.

Check out this post from Catherine Donaldson-Evans on AOL Health.
Carcinogens have spread rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico since the region was devastated by the BP oil spill in April, according to researchers.
A report released by scientists at Oregon State University found that cancer-causing oil compounds increased by 40 times between May and June of 2010 in the waters bordering Louisiana.
“It’s an incredibly huge jump in concentration in a natural environment,” Oregon State toxicology professor Kim Anderson, who led the study, told the Los Angeles Times.
Among the dangerous agents detected are carcinogens called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs.

Anger, depression, and helplessness are the main psychological responses being seen in response to the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and they are likely to have long-lasting effects, according to an interview in Ecopsychology, . . . .
The anger being expressed in response to the recent BP oil rig explosion and resulting spill of millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico is “a way of masking the really unfathomable and profound despair that is just under the surface as we watch this catastrophe unfold,” says Deborah Du Nann Winter, PhD, Professor of Psychology at Whitman College (Walla Walla, WA).
The next time a giant corporation practices gross negligence that results in a devastating oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (or anywhere else), we’ll be prepared. MIT’s Senseable City Lab has developed Seaswarm — a fleet of high-tech robots that talk via Wi-Fi and GPS, and eat and clean oil off the water’s surface. Then they purify the oil by pulling around a conveyor belt made of a reusable, oil-absorbing material. And poof, the water is back to its old self – we hope.via GOODPost from: BlissTreeMIT Develops Oil-Cleaning Robot Army, But Too Late for the Gulf (Source: Breastfeeding 1-2-3)

More than 50,000 tons of boon and other debris from the BP oil spill is being put in landfills or incinerators — and that’s only about 7% of the total waste that will end up in landfills, according to The Huffington Post. All the landfill sites meet EPA standards, but three have state environmental issues – like polluting local waters.
Local residents and environmental experts are worried about what the oil-covered trash will do to the groundwater in their areas, and nervous about future problems that could arise. And we’re worried for them.

Spike Lee’s new, follow-up documentary about the repercussions in the Gulf of Mexico after Hurricane Katrina, as well as this year’s BP oil spill starts screening this week, and environmentalist and activist Brad Pitt is doing interviews as part of the film. Pitt is asked if he thinks capital punishment would be suitable for those responsible for the oil spill, and he responds, “I was never for the death penalty before — I am willing to look at it again.”
Whoa, Brad! This flick should be called Death Wish X: The Oily Payback. But Spike Lee actually titled it: If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise (the follow-up to his 2006 HBO documentary When the Levees Broke: A Requiem In Four Acts). One group of pelicans was brought to the Chicago Zoological Society after they were cleaned. There, they had medical examinations, and were monitored during their recovery. The pelicans will be a part of the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

Taking a dip in the oil-contaminated Gulf could be scarier than Italian Vogue's Oil & Water fashion shoot.
There’s no question that the oil disaster in the Gulf will have long-term effects on the environment, but people are starting to wonder: What about the health effects of all that oil-contaminated water? From harming our seafood to raising the risk of cancer, everyone’s concerned with how the oil spill fallout will affect our health in years to come. So we asked Dr. Naheed Ali, author of Are You Fit to Live? and Diabetes and You: A Holistic Approach, about the medical and physical effects of swimming in oil-contaminated water.
There are serious and potential health hazards from swimming in oil-contaminated waters. (Shocking.) Here’s what you could expect to ha...

Pamela Anderson Adopts Pets From Gulf Region, So We Have to Like Her a Little

photo via The Huffington Post
Remember those heartbreakingly adorable Gulf region pets that had to be given to shelters because their owners couldn’t afford to keep them? Well, Pamela Anderson is doing her part to raise awareness about the poochies and kitties still in need by traveling to the Gulf and adopting two pets of her own. PETA is working to organize adopt-a-thons to find good homes for the pets made homeless by the BP oil spill.
Dammit, now we have to like Pam Anderson. But just because we think she went overboard with the cosmetic surgeries doesn’t mean we think she’s a bad person. Same goes for all the celebs over 40 we’re going to try our best not to look like. Except for Mel Gibson. He actually is a bad person.

Remember localwashing? When a company pretends that it’s using local goods to create a product, but it’s really just trying to get you to buy crap? Greenwashing is similar, but instead of pretending to be local, companies fake eco-friendliness. And some of our favorite, most well-meaning celebrities just got played. Big time.
In the “Be The One” public service announcement promoting restoration in the Gulf of Mexico following the BP oil spill, celebrities including Sandra Bullock, Blake Lively, and Dave Matthews urged the public to sign a petition demanding government funding for clean-up efforts. But it turns out that the PSA was made by America’s Wetland Foundation, which is funded by Shell Oil –

If we were part of the wild animal kingdom, we’d be totally fed up with humans by now. Animals have been farmed, domesticated, hunted, driven to extinction, and, recently, covered in oil. They’ve probably had enough. But some animals just keep on giving. (Of course, they don’t have much of a say in the matter.) The Huffington Post has a cool slideshow of some animals who help humans do things we really can’t do alone — like patrol the ocean for terrorists (see cute dolphin below). We just hope these animal employees are treated just as well as their human co-workers — or better. Check out the full set of photos here.

If you need something to occupy yourself today while BP is trying to put a new cap on the leaking oil well in the Gulf, we’ve got just the thing. It’s called Instant Oil Spill, and it’s an interactive site that brings the murky toxins of the oil spill right to your computer screen.
The site is brought to you by A Cleaner Future, a nonprofit that focuses on creating awareness about alternative and cleaner energy sources. We thought that adding a little oil spill to the BP website would be cathartic, and, while it was sort of fun in an ironic way to see the black goop fill their homepage, it just wasn’t all that satisfying.

Hey, everyone — good news! Scientists have discovered three new species of fish in the Gulf of Mexico. Oh, wait — that Gulf of Mexico. Turns out, not only is the BP oil spill killing underwater species we already knew about, but it’s also eradicating species we didn’t even know existed. Another giant win for BP.
Next, perhaps scientists will discover a tribe (school?) of mermaids, who will declare war on us for decimating their watery home. Mermaids can breathe underwater – we’d definitely lose.

The X Prize Foundation, a nonprofit that offers prizes to spur technological innovation, is offering the reward. Now if only they could figure out a way to persuade BP to actually accept some help with cleaning up this environmental disaster.

Let Your Kids Play In the Gulf Oil Spill: Videos That Make Us Mad

We obviously don’t want the tourism industries in Florida or anywhere else along the Gulf of Mexico to hurt any more than they already are hurting. But really – what kind of insane parents let their kids play in water that has oil in it? I’m not talking about the Gulf of Mexico as a whole, but when you can literally see the oil on the sand (let alone your children), it’s probably time to call it a day at the beach. We can assume that by this time, the whole world has heard about the spill, right? Residing under a rock seems like it’s the only viable excuse for letting your preschoolers swim in oil.

By Michael F. CannonIn a move reminiscent of the George W. Bush administration, the Obama administration is cracking down on the Minerals Management Service…by changing the agency’s name.
The MMS has fallen into disrepute because, well, as E&ENews PM put it, “employees accepted gifts from oil and gas companies, participated in ‘a culture of substance abuse and promiscuity,’ and considered themselves exempt from federal ethics rules.” The “drug and sex abuse [occurred] both inside the program and ‘in consort with industry.’ “ The New York Times reports that MMS employees “viewed pornography at work and even considered themselves part of industry.” Yet this government agency somehow failed to prevent the oil s...

Today's To-Do List: Apologize to BP

Last week, after Rep. Joe Barton apologized to BP for what he called the White House’s “shakedown” of the company, Republicans and Democrats alike couldn’t believe it. But you know what? Maybe there are some things for which we need to apologize to BP. ApologizeToBP.com is up and running for everyone to air the grievances that they’ve committed against BP. You can also use Twitter to show your remorse for the awful things you’ve done to BP with the hashtag #ImSorryBP.
Grist did a round-up of the best apologies, and we chose a few of our faves:
#ImSorryBP for not giving you your props for the 8 other oil rigs you operate that are hardly leaking at all.
#ImSorryBP That people keep referring to the Exxon Valdez spill in reference to your ...

Scott Smullen of the NOAA maintains the effectiveness of training inspectors to declare food harvests safe by the (we kid you not) use of the whiff test – if it smells like oil it is contaminated and if it smells “okay” then it is safe to eat.
Happy World Oceans Day! This day has been celebrated since 1992 and was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008, but it’s hard to celebrate this year with the entire Gulf covered in BP’s oil spill.
To celebrate, and help with the Gulf oil spill cleanup, Depth is donating $1 from every one of its personal care products purchased at Whole Foods Market to the National Audubon Society for Gulf oil spill recovery from now until June 15.
Depth’s line of personal care products, pictured below, is 70% organic, 100% vegetarian, hypoallergenic, and paraben-free. Depth isn’t only helping the oceans with its gift to the National Audubon Society; it also contains natural botanicals and sea minerals, and is free of artificial colors, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, ...

Recently, hair salons and nonprofit groups across the country (including Matter of Trust) have been collecting hair and fur to send to the Gulf Coast to help clean up the BP oil spill. Hair mats and booms are a natural, non-toxic way to absorb the oil that’s polluting the Gulf of Mexico. But BP has refused to try using the donated materials that are currently filling 19 warehouses.
And they haven’t just ignored the mats: BP sent out a press release saying that they were appreciative, but also told organizations to stop collecting and sending hair, because they weren’t going to use it. BP claims that the hair will sink, but there are ways of making it float. They’re also worried it’ll leave debris behind. Yes, we’re certain that hair is m...

It sounds like an aquatic sci-fi flick: Heroic robot fish lead distressed regular fish to safety. But this scenario could actually happen, thanks to Maurizio Porfiri, a professor at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. He hopes that his remote control fish could lead helpless fish stuck in murky, oil-filled waters to safety (which would’ve come in handy in the Gulf of Mexico thanks to the BP oil spill).
Apparently, schools of fish will “trust” and follow an impostor, as long as it’s silent and moves like a fish. Porfiri’s robots aren’t ready for action yet, but it’s a cool idea that could have many successful implementations in the future. Aside from an oil spill situation, robots could be used to guide birds to s...

It’s kind of insane that BP still hasn’t figured out a foolproof way to clean up the catastrophic Gulf of Mexico oil spill. And BP’s seemingly feeble attempts may be harming the environment even more. Yesterday, the Environmental Protection Agency told BP that they had 24 hours to decide on a less toxic form of chemical dispersants to try and break up the environmental disaster.
655,00o gallons of the extremely toxic dispersants that BP is using have now been distributed over the surface of the ocean and underwater. Federal officials are worried about the threat to the marine life in the Gulf of Mexico, since the use of dispersants to this degree is unprecedented.
Also, apparently BP is trying to limit how much journalists see of the spill. Hey, BP, what el...

We are on vacation for a quick week in Marco Island, Florida!
There is a contest at Lydia’s Uniforms blog for the best of the top 25 nursing blogs.

First of all, the pictures are of my two sons, Ryland (22) and Kingsley (14). Ryland is pictured with the longer hair; Kingsley is my ‘little’ one with shorter hair. The picture of all three includes my father, Jerry (84). He has rented a condominium here every winter for the last 28 years to get out of the beastly cold in Iowa! He stated this was the coldest winter in southern Florida that he can remember in all of those years. My youngest son was watching the news on the computer last night and learned that our home town had just received another ‘last blast...

By Sallie JamesI suspect I may be falling into a publicity trap here, but nonetheless I am unable to resist blogging about an email I received this morning from the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University. The email contained this teaser:
How does cheap food contribute to global hunger? GDAE’s Timothy A. Wise, in this recent article in Resurgence magazine, explains the contradictory nature of food and agriculture under globalization. He refers to globalization as “the cheapening of everything” and concludes:
“Some things just shouldn’t be cheapened. The market is very good at establishing the value of many things but it is not a good substitute for human values. Societies need to determine their own human values, not let the market do it for them. Th...

By Chris EdwardsThe Wall Street Journal has an article today for people who think that we need government to thrust itself into the economy because major projects, like energy and technology projects, are too big or risky for private businesses. The article focuses on Chevron’s offshore oil development:
Chevron is leasing the Clear Leader, which floats in 4,300 feet of water in the Gulf of Mexico, to drill for oil through nearly five miles of rock. Big Oil never wanted to be here, in 4,300 feet of water far out in the Gulf of Mexico, drilling through nearly five miles of rock…
It is an expensive way to look for oil. Chevron Corp. is paying nearly $500,000 a day to the owner of the Clear Leader, one of the world’s newest and most powerful drilling rigs. The new well off ...

Haass: Defining ‘Success’ Down

Richard Haass’s op ed in today’s Post is worth a read. Sure, it amounts to a well-placed advertisement for his new book, War of Necessity, War of Choice. And it’s not like Haass, current president of the Council of Foreign Relations, and former director of policy planning at the State Department, lacks for exposure. But while I would quibble with his characterization of the first Gulf War as “necessary”, it is refreshing for a man so firmly fixed in the foreign policy establishment to focus not on the United States’ supposed capacity for refashioning the global order, but rather on the limits of our power.
He urges President Obama to resist the impulse to expand our objectives in Afghanistan, and should not dedicate far more resources to the effort i...

Again, Gulf War Syndrome Real

Although the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs concluded in 2004 that Gulf War Syndrome is a real medical illness (and not purely a psychological one), apparently a wide range of news media outlets earlier this week took the release of a new report as stating something new or different:

“Gulf War illness is real,” the report concludes. “Few veterans have recovered.” Their last report in 2004 also concluded that GWS is not psychological but caused by organophosphates.

What the new report did do is simply strength the association and evidence that implicates inflammatory chemicals in the brain called cytokines. Sadly, the new report (PDF) also concludes that many vets are not being properly treated for the Syndrome, and research into it has plummeted since 2001....

House - Episode 16 (Season Three): “Top Secret”

The first of nine new House episodes in a row, tonight’s show featured a Iraq veteran suffering from Gulf War Syndrome, though little attention was actually paid to the controversial diagnosis. Medically, an above average episode, though it felt fairly light otherwise.

House is asked by Cuddy to see a patient who just happens to be the nephew of one of the hospital’s benefactors. Strangely, House has just had a dream about the patient, and is sure that he has seen his face somewhere before (he probably recognized him as Riley from Buffy the Vampire Slayer). John is a thirty-four year-old sergeant in the Marine Corps who recently returned from a two-year tour of duty in Iraq. John believes that he has Gulf War Syndrome and complains of chronic fatigue, intermittent rashes, joi...
