Finding the flu shot lately, seasonal or H1N1, has become a modern day game of Where’s Waldo!
In typical fashion, Dr. Google has come to the rescue with a new tool, www.google.com/flushot:

Simply type in your location and up comes results for both seasonal and H1N1 clinics in your area, whether they have the vaccines now and when they will have them, if that information is available.
For example, if I type in “Boston” in the “Find Flu Shots Near” field, the map looks like this:

Most communities are still reporting extreme shortages in the H1N1 vaccine and don’t expect that to change for a few more weeks. It’s amazing to me that some many high risk people, myself including, can’t get this vaccine. At least we now have a tool to help track it down once it finall...

The Flucount.org website, which is trying to count flu cases and deaths, reports that the number of worldwide deaths from H1N1 swine flu has passed the 5,000 mark.

The worldwide total is likely higher than this because there are nations that are probably not reporting deaths with accuracy and some that are not reporting them at all.

For the last several months, health officials have told us that frequent hand washing might be one way we can help prevent the H1N1 virus. While everyone from office workers to school children has been told to wash their hands several times a day, new reports have surfaced that showed that some schools with diligent hand washing rules still had massive outbreaks of H1N1.

Health officials agree that hand washing can help with many diseases like the common cold. But for the flu? Especially the H1N1 virus? Not so much. However, health officials still say hand washing is important, as it can help with “transmission of other respiratory diseases.”

I got a nice email from the American Meat Institute (representing pork producers, among others), politely asking that we stop saying ’swine flu’:
Novel H1N1 is a human disease. Pigs have not played any role in the spread of the virus. We urge you to remind your reporters and producers that continued use of the term “swine flu” is inappropriate and ask that your coverage de-link the virus from pigs or pork. We ask that you refrain from using pig graphics in your reporting as it reinforces the perception that a link has existed between the Novel H1N1 virus and pig production– something that is regrettable, inaccurate, yet commonly seen.
So, just say no to swine flu, it’s H1N1. (Source: GruntDoc)

The World Health Organization has a new update today that puts the total death toll from the H1N1 swine flu virus at 816. So far, most of the cases and deaths have occurred in the Americas.

The WHO has stopped asking countries to supply individual case counts but it appears they are still tracking deaths from the H1N1 swine flu virus.

The Contra Costa Times reports that the number of H1N1 swine flu deaths has climb to 55. 23 additional new deaths have come in a single week.

"We expect to continue to see more cases of swine flu, more serious cases and, unfortunately, more deaths," said Ken August, spokesman for the California Department of Public Health.

Though health officials expected the spread of swine flu to slow in the hot summer months, as influenza viruses often do, the virus hasn't gone away, August said.

"While the majority of cases have been mild so far, public health officials remain very concerned that the virus could evolve into a more serious strain of influenza," he said.

The California Department of Health's website has a helpful chart here that shows the case distribution by country in California. ...
