Back in 2009, I wrote a haiku about losing my hair. Today, it’s published on a website dedicated to hair loss haikus.
You can revisit my haiku, and find others, here. I especially like ‘To Those Who Mock Me’. And I love the way that hair loss – through cancer or not – is transformed, on this site, to a thing of poetry. Enjoy.
(Is it tactless to browse while running my fingers through my hair?!) (Source: Bah! to cancer)

While updating my evergreen post I Look Up as I Walk last night, I found so many new covers of Kyu Sakamoto’s 1963 number-one hit Ue O Muite Arukou (also known as “Sukiyaki”) recorded in sympathy for the people of Japan after the March 11 earthquake/tsunami that I decided it was time to write a followup.
The pain of the Japanese people will be long and deep. I do understand some of the lingering resentment of Japan. My own uncle Louis B. Read barely survived the Bataan Death March and slave labor in the Mitsubishi mines. But years later he participated in a program of Japan and United States reconciliation. His story is here. (My uncle Louis died a few days ago. His Dallas Morning News obit is the first comment on this post.)

Well, I am getting the poems, many of them, nicely settled into their new home on a night kitchen. The ones that are already here in the “my poems” section of the blog will stay here as well.
Poems can bilocate. That is something that is fascinating to me this early in the morning. Yes, I know it’s just past nine, but these things are relative. The humidity and pollen in the air combine to sap my energy.
But what I also meant to say is this: my new poems, the ones that I am creating now, go over to a night kitchen and will likely not be found on this blog.
There’s a new one now. Go see.

Few certainly doesn’t mean less good, as seen on the Spot Pass Bloggers’ Food Tour last April 25. There were 100 bloggers and 17 establishments who participated in this food appreciation activity. There were those who were veterans of the previous TriNoma food tour but there were newbies, as well.
It was good that we started on time because, though there were fewer restaurants participating this time, it’s still a lot! And we need to be spending more time in each establishment so we could enjoy the food better and interact with the restaurant staff more.
So, off we went…(WARNING! LOTS OF FOODIE PICS! BE READY TO GET HUNGRY!)

Just like in the last food tour, this was the place where we started the tour. Chef Lou treated us to a good round of pizza...

We concluded our Top 50 Brain Teasers post with the challenge:

#50. Can you write a haiku describing your experience doing some of the previous teasers? The simple rules: write 3 lines, which don't need to rhyme, containing 5,7, and 5 syllables. There were a number of great and fun takers...you can enjoy their haikus below.
Let's now change the theme: Can you write a haiku describing what problem you would like to see brain research solve? Remember the simple rules: write 3 lines, which don't need to rhyme, containing 5,7, and 5 syllables. You can leave your haiku as a comment for extra points...

Six Words Are All You Need

Everyone has a six-word story, or so Smith notes (and here’s a video—some pictures must only be worth six words). Indeed: Sometimes (a lot of times) in our house, a little goes a long way. My son Charlie can talk, mostly in short phrases or single words and six words at one time from him is quite a lot.

Blue ocean, Chinese food, I know.

It’s telegraphic speech, in which a single word is connected, by fibers invisible and strong as the threads of a spider’s web, to a full cosmos of meanings. All in just six words.

Don’t you dare tell me this photo of salad on a starfish-shaped dish isn’t cute! Haha!
This is a photo of a dish we sampled in the second restaurant we went to in the food tour, Haiku. Obviously, it’s a Japanese restaurant and me, being a lover of Japanese food, enjoyed this part of the trip immensely (as well as some other parts too, but I’ll get to that later). And this pretty little thing got my attention the moment it was set on the table by the friendly waiter. And for this, my vote for the Resto with the best-tasting food goes to Haiku (tied up with another resto, I’ve to say. You’ll find out later). Also, I find Haiku as one of the Restos with the best food presentation for the tour.

Also, I think the resto has a thing for starfish ...

I love to dream. Not daydreams. The all out, longer, stranger ones that occur late in the sleep cycle. Traveling in time, changing the past, reliving parts of it, when even being changed by the dreamstuff itself seems possible. I don't really mind if I wake in a panic from a dream if it was interesting. One type that I like the most combines concepts, people, words, images, or events in ways that would be highly unlikely in a waking state. I had one of that sort recently that somehow intertwined my confusion about my future with the mnemonic device for remembering the names of the 12 cranial nerves. Further, in the dream, I realized that the words of the "standard" version of this memory aid had seventeen syllables. Ooh, haiku! Of course upon waking I could not leave the version I had lear...

A Brain Fitness Vacation

A year ago we wrote a Glossary where we defined Brain Fitness as "the general state of good, sharp, brain and mind, especially as the result of mental and physical exercise and proper nutrition" and a Brain Fitness Program as a "structured set of brain exercises, usually computer-based, designed to train specific brain areas and functions in targeted ways, and measured by brain fitness assessments."
Now, thanks to this recent article Alvaro and Lisa's Brain Vacation, we can add Brain Fitness Vacation: "A brain fitness vacation is like a regular vacation, only you attend events, do exercises, and arrange for experiences that address the aspects of good brain health: physical exercise, mental exercise, good nutrition, and stress management."
