Life is full of little annoyances. And yet, somehow, many people aren’t bothered by them. These people are never sweaty, always dress appropriately for every occasion, and can whip up something tasty for that last minute potluck. Are these people perfect? Probably not. They’ve just learned these 14 simple tricks that save them time and preserve their sanity, courtesy of Real Simple.
1. When errand day comes around, map out your stops in a clockwise pattern. No annoying left turns! And keep a cooler in the car for perishables to save time-wasting trips home in between stops.
2. If you get weepy while cutting onions and don’t want to ruin your fresh mascara, stick your head in the freezer for a few seconds. Seriously. The blood vessels will constrict and r...

Healthy Weight Week: Jan 17-23, 2010

Now that New Year’s is a little more than two weeks gone, so are many of the resolutions we’ve made. One of the most common resolutions is to lose weight and, unfortunately, not all of us – men or women – do this in a healthy manner. Another unfortunate situation is that not everyone needs to lose weight and they are at a perfectly healthy weight for their height and body build.
According to the Healthy Weight website,
Healthy Weight Week promotes healthy nondiet lifestyles for children and adults of every size. It helps them move ahead to healthy habits they can live with long term – sound, reasonable habits that allow them to live well and get on with their lives. Eat well, live actively, and feel good about yourself and others.
So, what is a healthy weight?

Partying and enjoying time with old friends, new friends, and people you’ve yet to meet is a big part of the holiday season. New Year’s Eve is a party night extraordinaire for many. But it’s also a time when women can be subjected to unwanted attention from others or carelessness on their part – resulting in unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections, even assaults.
So, how do women stay safe? Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Women’s Health Educator Shelby Knox. She is an expert in sex ed and women’s issues, and recognizes that “mistakes can happen.” But, she offers up ways to prevent serious setbacks. She’s got some tips that can help keep you from becoming statistics.
Last year, Knox wrote Abstinence is the New Feminism (And Other...

Drunk driving is a bit of a misnomer. It gives you the impression that you need to be obviously drunk: weaving as you walk, slurring your speech, acting like a jerk. But driving drunk is not that obvious most of the time. Driving while under the influence is a better term, but it boils down to the same thing: You’ve had too much to drink and you shouldn’t be driving because you’re a buzzed driver. Maybe, no matter how much alcohol you’ve had, you shouldn’t be driving at all. It works in many Northern European countries, there’s no reason why it couldn’t work in North America.
The National Highway Safety and Traffic Association (NHTSA) and the Ad Council are continuing their efforts with their PSA campaign called “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving....

Could this be the next best baby shower gift? The TummyTub(r) claims to be the next best thing to mom’s womb, but if you look at the first picture on this webpage, the baby sure doesn’t look all that thrilled to me!
The bucket/bath/tub is a clear bucket-shaped container that the website calls “womb-shaped and sized.” Created in the Netherlands, the tub is supposed to be popular, providing the baby with a comfortable transition from the womb to outside.
According to the website:

Baby feels warm, safe, and relaxed within soft boundaries
Eases indigestion, gas, and colic while calming baby
Stimulates cognitive and physical development

What do you think? A good idea or a waste of money?

At a time of economic turmoil and job losses, many people are turning to home business opportunities. But here’s one I bet you’ve never thought about – sex toy parties.
Environmentally friendly ‘adult toys’ are being taken out of the bedroom and into the living room by a Northwest-based retailer who has launched Earth Erotic Parties.
Aimed at putting a sustainable twist on the more traditional sex toy parties, the Earth Erotic parties will showcase green vibrators, phthalate-free dildos, natural lubricants, recycled whips and all sorts of other ecologically and non toxic adult paraphernalia.
Sounds like a company that’s taking ‘doing it green’ to a whole new level.
Interested? Then sneak in and check out this ‘earth erotic party’ video over at Planet G...

Did you know that around 40 million squirrels a year get run over on US roads simply because they are so busy running back and forth, with no plan or strategy, with the sole aim of finding nuts?
Which is why Andrew J Sherman, in his self-improvement book Road Rules, suggests that we need to ‘Be the Truck. Not the Squirrel.’
Unlike squirrels, trucks are big, powerful, and have a plan, road map, and destination in mind. They, unlike the squirrel, don’t get squashed.
Yes, it sounds a bit extreme, even violent and aggressive. But once you get into the book, you’ll find that there is nothing at all aggressive about Andrew’s approach to life.
In fact, the book simply uses road signs and rules as the way to navigate the road of life.
Road Rules puts a new spin on many of the common road...

David “Yeah Dave” Romanelli seems like a most unlikely guru. He seems too goofy and outrageous for someone guiding others on a path to enlightenment. But in this day and age, gurus no longer need to be serious and focused. They just need to be able to show us a way to find pleasure, happiness, and enjoyment.
His book, Yeah Dave’s Guide to LiVIN’ the MOMENT is all about Dave and his Zen approach to happiness and living in the moment. Informally written, it’s a rollercoaster ride through Dave’s life, complete with anecdotes and encounters that illustrate why we all need to slow down and pay attention.
As the founder/teacher of “Yoga + Chocolate” and “Yoga + Wine” workshops, David Romanelli writes “There is a place where the chocolate tastes sweeter, the mu...

I confess. I love juice. As someone who really can’t be bothered with peeling oranges, slicing up mangos, or grating carrots, I find having a jug of juice in the fridge a matter of necessity.
But, as usual, it turns out that what I think is good for me might not necessarily be so.
According to this WebMD slideshow, there are three diverse sides to juice - the good, the bad, and the ugly - and how to spot the differences.
The Good - Vegetable Juices which have far less sugar and fewer calories than fruit juices
The Bad - Fruit juices might be the real deal full of vitamins and anti-oxidants but they are also naturally full of calories and sugars.
The Ugly - anything labeled juice cocktail, juice-flavoured beverage or juice drink. Odds are they will only contain minor amounts of the real...

A Cactus for Your Computer?

If you’re like me and spend way too much time in front of the computer, you might want to consider livening up the area surrounding the computer with a cactus or two.
According to the daily green, some Swiss researchers in the mid-1980s did some tests and found that people ‘who used to suffer from headaches and tiredness felt better after working for two years with a cactus next to their monitors.’
Why?
One theory is that the cacti, which grows in areas of extreme heat and dryness, is able to counter the effects of harsh solar radiation.
My theory - the cactus simply reminds people of wide open spaces and helps their minds escape from the confining office cubicle. A totally unscientific theory but it works for me.

Driving might be the American way of life, but it’s a way of life that’s simply not good for your health nor the environment. The more we drive, the less we walk and the more difficult it becomes to get the recommended 10,000 steps a day to maintain wellness.
In fact, according to Lawrence Frank of the University of British Columbia, “Every additional 30 minutes spent in a car each day translates into a 3 percent greater chance of being obese,” he said.
Unfortunately, many American cities are not made for walking. As David Goldberg of Smart Growth America (a coalition of nonprofit groups that works to improve town and city planning) says “We have designed cities to suppress walking” But times have changed and now the cities need to look at ways to move away from...

It’s a funny thing. Soon as I get to work, my nose seems to go into overdrive. The running and sneezing seem to increase.
I’ve always jokingly said I must be allergic to work. But it turns out it might not be a joke - I, like thousands of others, could easily be allergic to work, or at least all the allergens that are floating around the workplace.
What’s in your physical surroundings can easily act as an irritant that causes an allergic reaction. Dust, of course, is probably one of the main suspects. And it’s not just in the office. There’s dust everywhere - in warehouses, at construction sites, in restaurant kitchens.
In fact, according to the World Health Organization, exposure to dust, gases, or fumes in the workplace environment are responsible for 11 p...

MSNBC reported the other day that ‘thanks to the swine flu, there’s a little less hugging and kissing [going on] in the United States’. They base this on a recent Harvard survey that found about 1 in 10 Americans have stopped hugging, kissing, and even shaking hands because of swine flu concerns.
Sounds pretty extreme and probably not all that good for your health. Hugging, after all, makes people happier. And happier people will often be healthier people.
Hugging, a simple physical expressions of affection, improves and strengthen peoples connections and relationships with other people and themselves.

Sure hope it’s not too early to start on my Christmas Wish List ’cause I just found something to put on the top of the list
It’s a Pumgo Scooter - the world’s first pedal-powered scooter.
Check it out…

Think of the all possible benefits…

Increased exposure to Vitamin D - By being outside, you’ll get a decent quota of Vitamin D, something that’s apparently lacking for many people.
Fun and entertaining - Remember, laughter and fun is important for good health.
A stress release - How could you be stressed when riding around like a kid on a Pumgo Scooter.
An exercise workout - It’s a cardio-vascular workout that will burn calories and strengthened muscles.
Clean, green transportation - Small enough to sit in the office while at work, this could be the newest...

Our home is our castle. A place to feel secure and safe.
But after reading Beth Greer’s book Super Natural Home, I have to say, I’m starting to wonder exactly how safe my house really is. According to Beth Greer, probably not all that safe, especially if you start taking into account all the dangerous chemicals that we invite in and have around our house at all times.
Beth used to be just like you and me, living what she considered a healthy but busy lifestyle. But when a medical crisis (a 5-centimeter tumour in her chest) caused her to re-evaluate her lifestyle, she discovered that maybe her lifestyle wasn’t as healthy as she thought. In fact, she discovered instead of being healthy, it was downright toxic.
So she spent six months cleaning up ‘her act’, eating an all-organic die...

It’s a good month for coffee and chocolate.
First, there was news about a study that found that caffeine reduces muscle pain caused by exercise and now researchers in England seem to think that mental arithmetic becomes easier when chocolate is involved.
But before those of you trying to complete your tax returns go nuts on chocolate, you’d better have a good read of the study because it’s not as clear cut as us chocoholics would like it to be. Yes, it seems that the study participants, after partaking in large amounts of flavanols (the compounds found in chocolate), did do better when asked to count backwards in groups of three from a random number between 800 and 999. But when these same participants were asked to count backwards by sevens, the ingested chocolate was of no help.

Great news for all the caffeine addicts out there. It’s a known fact that caffeine is a performance enhancer, one of the very few that isn’t banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

But now a new study by University of Illinois researchers has found that caffeine eases the muscle pains of exercising.
The study involved 25 fit, college-aged men. Some of the participants were regular caffeine users, ie ones who drank at least four cups of coffee (or the equivalent in caffeine laced drinks) a day on average, while others either didn’t take in caffeine at all or only had a small daily intake.
After an initial exercise test on an exercise bike to determine maximal oxygen consumption, the participants were then monitored while doing two high-intensity, half-hour exercise sessio...

After a long, hard winter, everyone just wants to get out and catch some sun rays, feel the warm, and get a bit of color back in the skin. But while the sun makes us feel good, it’s not always the best thing for us.
With the incidence of skin cancer on the rise, it’s important to remember to stop and protect ourselves before we head out into the sun.
It’s also important to know fact from fiction when it comes to what’s good and bad about the sun.
Myth #1: Dark-skinned people are safe from sun damage and skin cancer risks.
Even though those with brown skin have lots of melanin which offers more protection against UV rays, they are more prone to moles. And abnormal moles are a major risk factor for melanoma.
Myth #2: Lip Gloss can protect the skin.

‘Just one drink. Okay, maybe just one more.’ Does that sound familiar? We have all been there at some stage or another. However, most of us never develop a drinking problem. We know when to stop and how much is too much.
But even if you don’t have a problem with alcohol, it never hurts to learn more about what alcohol can do to your body and your life.
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) have created a great interactive website called ”Rethinking Drinking” that’s definitely worth checking out. Aimed at helping people, especially those between 18 and 30, determine what type of drinker they are and whether they might be at risk of developing a drinking problem.

Trying to get some kids to eat vegetables is like pulling teeth. They’ll do just about anything to avoid that green, orange, or yellow thing sitting on the plate. Hiding it doesn’t work. Somehow, they always seem to know it there.
Well, turns out there’s an easier way to get your kids to eat their greens, yellows, and oranges.
Just give them a cool name like ‘X-ray Vision Carrots’, ‘Tomato Bursts’, or ‘dinosaur broccoli trees’ and the vegetables won’t stand a chance. They’ll be goobled up quick.
That’s the finding of a new study by Cornell University researchers. They presented 186 four-year old “X-ray Vision Carrots” and found that these pre-schoolers ate nearly twice as much as they did on the lunch days ...

Good news for those of us who discover at the end of a meeting or lecture that our notes are hidden by messy doodles, unintelligible to anyone but ourselves.
According to recent study carried out by UK researchers those who doodle have better memory recall than those who do not.
The study had the participants divided into two groups - one group was encouraged to color in shapes on a piece of paper while listening to a 2.5 minute telephone message and the other group was left to their own devices while listening.
Both groups, by the way, were told before the message began that it would be dull.
Directly after listening to the message, everyone was asked to write down the eight specific places and names mentioned in the message.
The results - doodlers on average recalled 7.5, while the non-d...

You simply have to applaud this kid’s audacity and entrepreneurial spirit.
Just 9 years old, Alex Greven doesn’t have a girlfriend and has never dated, and yet he’s already written a guide to dating that’s shot to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Entitled How to Talk to Girls, it’s based on his week long observations of his classmates in the playground.
It took a week to write. He showed it to his teacher, who showed it to the school’s principle, and the rest, as they say, was a total chain reaction. An appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show lead to a contract with Harper Collins and a whirlwind media tour across the States. The books have since been published in five countries and there’s plans for Alex to write three more books for...

Am happy to see that so many of you are like me and love hitting the road. Road trips really are exhilerating and result in such memorable experiences.
But road trips aren’t only about getting in the car and driving off in the sunset. They can also be about looking for change, looking for answers, and clearing the mind.
And that’s really what the book ‘Road Trip Guide to the Soul’ is all about. I can guarantee that by the time you’ve finished reading it and following some of the ideas and action plans, you’ll be feeling as exhilerated as when you got into the car and took off.
One lucky Healthbolt reader will be able to discover this for themselves. The winner of Sadie Nardini’s Road Trip Guide to the Soul is…

It’s a loud, in your face type of statement, and it’s what exactly what opera singer Cindy Salder has been doing for the last year or so. In September 2007, Cindy decided that enough was enough and it was time to remove the weight. A woman on a mission, within nine months, she managed to shed 100 pounds.
Want to find out how?
Take a look at this June 2008 New York Times video…

Tara Parker-Pope at the NYT’s Well Blog caught up with Cindy recently to find out how things were going with this incredible shrinking opera singer and found Cindy still on target and blogging about her weight loss battles at The Next 100 Pounds.

I’ll let you in on a little secret.
I’ve just found my dream job - getting paid to live on an beautiful island in a luxurious villa for six months. The money’s really good, the climate is perfect, and all I’ll have to do is wander around the local area, exploring all it has to offer and report back weekly via blogs, photo diaries, video updates and media interviews. I’d all have to collect the mail, feed the fish, and clean the pool.
No, I’m not making this up. It’s ‘fair dinkum’ as the Aussies would say, aimed to promote Queensland, and in particular the Great Barrier Reef and Hamilton Island to the world.
I could do that. I want to do that.
But there’s a small problem. It’s no secret and everyone, and I mean everyone, ...

Can airports be healthy places?
I’m sure that the thousands of stranded travelers during the recent holiday season would say no.
But Health Magazine, having done some research into the safety measures, food options, cleanliness, delays, and overall traveler satisfaction of all the nations airports, says yes airports can be healthy and have come up with a list of America’s 10 Healthiest Airports.

New Year’s resolutions - so easy to come by but so hard to keep.
And that’s why, after years of failing to follow through with my New Year’s resolutions, I decided a few years ago to throw away the list and start looking at the concept in a different light.
What if, I thought, I created a list of evergreen resolutions that reflected not short term goals but a lifestyle philosophy?
Last year I found my evergreen resolutions on some decorative tiles while at a garden center purchasing a lemon tree to replace the one I had killed (good news - one year later said lemon tree still alive and growing enough lemons to make lemonade).
And this year, my New Year’s evergreen resolutions were re-affirmed with this coffee mug I got as a Christmas present…

New Year’s Resolutions - More Trouble Than They Are Worth?

So, have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet?
You know, the ‘I’m going to lose weight, stop smoking, go to the gym, eat healthier, be nicer, get richer, etc, etc, etc’ type of resolutions.
If you have, good luck. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
And if you haven’t, my advice is ‘don’t bother’.
Did you know that most people who make New Year’s resolutions fail dismally within the first month or two of the new year?
A UK study of 3,000 people found that in the end, only about 400 managed to stay on track and achieve their resolutions.
That’s pretty grim statistics.
Why so bad?
Well, according to all the ‘experts’, it’s mostly because we…
- have too many resolutions
- the resolutions are too va...

The winner of the this extremely useful Life Fitness Premium Digital Pedometer is…
Merry

Congratulations Merry. Now you can find out exactly how many steps you are taking. You’ll be receiving an email shortly with directions on how and where to provide your mailing address.

Now for those that don’t have a pedometer (me included), here’s some general guidelines to help you work out how many steps you’re taking in a day:
Given that the average person has a stride length of 2.5 ft, it will take 2,000 steps (give or take) to walk a mile. So to get to 10,000 steps, you need to walk at least 5 miles a day.

Of course, you don’t have to do all these steps at once. They can be spread throughout the day, with various activities such as…

Is anyone ever really happy with their body image?
Probably not.
After all, how can we be when we are constantly bombarded with images that fuel our discontent with our bodies.
As a result, we often put ourselves at risk to obtain a perfect body in the hopes of having a perfect life.
Enter Pat Ballard, the Queen of the Rubenesque Romances. She writes writes romance novels and short stories with Big Beautiful Heroines to show that plus-size women are just as sexy, romantic, and exciting as their slim sisters.
But Pat wasn’t always this comfortable with the large body. As a young woman, she almost died trying to starve her body into a societally approved size. But having, through the years, made peace with the fact that she was a ‘perfect size twenty-two!’ Pat has written a b...

Congratulations Audrey. You should be receiving an email shortly with directions on how and where to provide your mailing address.
By the way, I have a sure fire why to avoid stress these holidays.
Hibernate.
Okay, so that might not work for most people.
But remember, when you are getting stressed, the best thing to do is take time out for yourself. Try to relax, treat yourself to a massage or manicure, take a long walk somewhere away from crowds and shops, meet friends for coffee or lunch, watch a funny movie or sitcom, and just sit back and breathe.
And don’t forget, ‘every day is a giveaway’ this month a...

Tapping into this, Eric Yaverbaum and Mark DiMassimo launched the national Tappening ad campaign to re-brand tap water as safe, affordable, and ever so good for the environment.

Want to Know the Secret to Longevity?

Everyone seems to have their own ideas on ‘what’s the secret to a long life’.
For example, 105 year old Clare says ‘No Sex is secret to longevity’. That might have worked for her, but most people would be thinking ‘what’s the fun in that’. Long life, no sex – no thanks.
Meanwhile, a 113 Japanese man suggests that the ‘the key to long life is abstaining from alcohol’.
But for those of us who aren’t so keen on these ways of ensuring a long, long life, meet Li Ching-Yun. Not only did he believe in sex (he had 23 wives) but also lived on rice and wine. All this, and he lived, according to various reports, to the ripe old age of 256! Now that’s what I call longevity.
Li Ching-Yun’s secret to longevity…

President-elect Obama made many promises during the election campaign, but to his daughters, the biggest was probably that if he’s elected they would get a dog. A tough call, given that his eldest daughter, Malia, apparently has a ‘dog allergy’.
In his first press conference, Obama seemed to think that all would be okay if they found a ‘hypoallergenic dog’. Sounds like a great plan. But according to medical experts, it’s not all that feasible. In fact, soon after the press conference, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) issued a statement saying “There is no truly ‘hypoallergenic’ dog.”
According to the Academy, there are many misconceptions regarding dog allergies, chief among them being ‘that people are allergic to a dog’s hair, a...

What seemed like the longest political campaign, ever, is finally over. A president has been chosen and you can go back to watching the soap operas, Oprah, cartoons, sports, or whatever else you used to watch before life became saturated with political coverage.
Except for some, it’s not that easy. After months of intense dedication to the cause, suddenly it’s over and irregardless whether your candidate was the chosen one or not, there’s now a huge void in your life.

Did you know that more than five million children and adults in North America wear braces ?
For them, Halloween season can be a dangerous time. The hard, chewy, sticky or crunchy candy usually handed out can easily result in damaged or broken braces, a painful and costly experience.
So what’s a brace wearing trick or treater to do?
Well, according to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), people with braces should steer clear of these traditional halloween treats…
  * All hard candies
  * All chewy candies
  * Caramel
  * Nuts
  * Licorice
  * Taffy
  * Jelly beans
  * Hard pretzels
  * Bubblegum
  * Popcorn (including unpopped kernels)
  * Taco chips
  * Ice
Instead they should aim for braces-friendly Halloween treats such as soft chocolate candy, peanut ...

Okay, all you pessimistic poops, now there’s a reason to take that oh-so-annoying Susie Sunshine a little more seriously. A recent study published in Psychosomatic Medicine reveals that people who choose to look at the glass as half full are 33% less likely to get sick when exposed to a virus. Why? Positive emotions prompt the release of chemicals that strengthen the immune system.
So the next time you have the urge to be a nay-sayer or ignore a cloud’s silver lining, think again.
This has been your Healthbolt Happy Living Tip of the day. Have a great weekend!

Hate your job? Daydream of ways to have your boss abducted and shipped off to Switzerland? Join the masses.
If the thought of burning yourself with scalding coffee sounds more appealing than heading to work another day, try these tips, which have been proven by researchers at Texas State University to increase job satisfaction:

Sit by a window as often as possible.
Add a green plant to your work area.

Yep, that’s it. And according to the TU study, out of 450 workers who utilized those two tips, 85% reported themselves to be “content” or “very happy” at work, as opposed to only 58% of those who did not have a window or plant nearby.
Of course, if your workstation is far removed from a window, you may be out of luck. Try taking a walk during your lunch hour or...

Some news reports tell us that ‘bed bugs are back’ and they are invading our hotels and our homes.
Others warn us about outbreaks of Lyme and West Nile disease.
But could you recognize what is actually biting you? Could you tell a bed bug from a black-legged or deer tick, a black widow from a brown recluse, or a head lice from a flea?
And would you recognize the bite?
WebMD has put together a very graphic and creepy slideshow that features all the bugs and bug bites that you could run across. And alongside all the slides is information on the bug, the bite, and what to do about it all…
By the way, did you know that there is actually a poisonous caterpillar lurking in the Southern states, feeding off shade trees such as the elm, the oak, and the sycamore. It’s called...

If you love eating out but are worried about sticking to your diet, then check out what Bernie Salazar has to say.
This ‘Biggest Loser’ reduced his body weight by 50% in six months through diet and exercise, so he can definitely ‘talk the talk’.
A Chicago Tribune reporter caught up with Bernie recently to discover how he manages to eat out once or twice a week and still manage to keep the weight off. After all, as every dieter knows, frequent restaurant visits can play havoc on your weight loss goals.
The trick, Bernie says, is to follow this tips…
- Pick the restaurant carefully.
- Don’t sacrifice taste. It doesn’t have to be bland or boring to be low in calories.
- Don’t feel guilty about what you do end up eating.
- Make smart decisions ...

Feel you are wandering around like a zombie, totally zapped of energy?
Well, you are not alone.
According to WebMD, every day, over 2 million Americans complain about being tired. We blame the tiredness on too much work and not enough sleep, but in reality it’s our poor everyday habits that are really making us tired.
Break these habits with WebMD’s ‘Guide to Never Feeling Tired Again’ and you might never be a zombie again.
Here’s the abbreviated version…
Step One: Energize the Diet.

Hey, Fellas! Floss for the Fight Against Disease.

Guys, this one’s for you (although I’d imagine the findings would hold true - or at least be similar - for womenfolk as well.)
Harvard scientists have found a cheap disease-fighter that you probably (hopefully) already do: Flossing your teeth!
In their research, they found that out of 50,000 guys, those with gum disease had a 30% to 50% greater risk of kidney, blood or pancreatic cancer. Why? Possibly because the inflammation caused by gum disease can egg on the growth of cancer cells.
The key, of course, is to floss daily. And brush, too. Ahem.
This has been your Healthbolt Easy Health Tip of the Day. Go forth with fresh breath and shiny teeth, m’friends.

If your medicine cabinet is like most people’s, it’s harboring all kinds of unused or outdated meds like antibiotics and pain-killers.
Instead of dumping them in the trash or toilet, consider donating them to Flying Doctors or Aid for AIDS, where volunteer medical teams headed to Mexico or Central America will be able to make good use of them.
While the meds may not be 100% potent or effective, the mere presence of any kind of medical intervention for those who have no other options may just save a life. A pretty great alternative to wasting, no?
Thanks in advance for your consideration - this has been your Healthbolt feel-good Happy Living Tip of the day.

Would you believe that I just received a Sexual Anatomy 101 lesson from a teen magazine? It’s true. In the latest issue of CosmoGirl!, there is a Sex Q & A that gave this 30-something girl a good, solid schooling.
So, we all know about the G-Spot. But did you know about the A-Spot? (Yep, another elusive “spot” that’s probably impossible to find.)
Here is the difference, according to the magazine:
Both:

May or may not exist in every woman.
Are hard to locate.
Are spongy, small areas on the roof of the vaginal wall (your stomach’s side, not your back’s.)

G-Spot:

Was named for gynecologist Ernst Grafenberg, the first person to describe it in a published study.
Is close to the entrance of the vagina.
Can produce an ejaculatory-like fluid when stimul...

Get on your knees and prepare to worship the researchers in Seattle that have developed a cavity-fighting version of gummy bears, bless their scientific hearts.
The scoop? Children who ate these special gummy bears five days a week had a significant decrease in the plaque bacteria that causes tooth decay.
So what’s so special about these special bears? In place of sugar, the scientists sweetened the bears with xylitol, which interferes with cavity-causing bacteria. In fact, this bacteria was reduced enough that, in theory, tooth decay could be prevented. *Cue parents and children cheering all across the world*
At this point, the study was too brief to ascertain whether or not these gummy bears will have any effect on future cavities, but there is a two-year study under way in Clevela...

Turns out that I already do a number of them - drinking green tea, taking a multivitamn, walking every day, and getting my 15 minutes of sunshine. But RD.com also listed a few that I would never had considered, such as…

Serve sauerkraut at your next picnic. A Finnish study found that the fermentation process involved in making sauerkraut produces several other cancer-fighting compounds, including ITCs, indoles, and sulforaphane. To reduce the sodium content, rinse canned or jarred sauerkraut before eating.

Healthbolt Happy Living Tip: How to Stop a Shaving Nick from Bleeding

It’s just like the old paper cut saying: The smaller the cut, the worse it hurts. With shaving, the smaller the nick, the worse it bleeds. Unless you gash yourself wide open with a brand new razor, then…
Anyway, it happens to all of us. We shave, we nick. But here’s a quick tip on how to stop the bleeding in a hurry:
Step 1: Use a cotton ball or swab to dab a little witch hazel onto the cut. Witch hazel is a natural astringent which tightens surrounding tissues and slows bleeding.
Step 2: Hold an ice cube or ice pack to the nick. The coolness helps to clot the blood.
See, easy right? I told you.
So this, my dear friends, has been your Healthbolt Happy Living Tip of the Day. You may now go forth and de-fuzz without worry.

Is there just anything better than reading about the health benefits of steak, beer or chocolate? Methinks not.
So here’s another gem for you: German researchers say that eating a square of dark chocolate every day can reduce your systolic blood pressure (the top number) by 3 points and your diastolic pressure by 2! And you don’t have to worry about breaking the diet bank, either. Each square only totals about 30 calories (calories full of bliss, I might add.)
The trick? Natural compounds found in dark chocolate raise your levels of nitric oxide, a known blood-vessel relaxer.
So…more chocolate in your life = better health? Man, what great news for a Monday, eh?
Bon apetit!

Keeping with the topic of women’s health today (be sure you enter our awesome book contest in the post below!), word is that cocktails (yes I mean those dreamy little Friday Happy Hour mood-enhancers) can help strengthen bones. For real!
Not only that, but according to The American Journal of Medicine, they also help reduce the risk of hip fracture by 20%.
Of course, everything in moderation though, my friends. Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day makes you 39% more susceptible to hip fractures, a figure that most likely comes from falling while tipsy.
So hey, while bellying up at the bar and grill tonight, make sure to tell everyone how that martini is really a health potion in disguise. Enjoy!

Did you know that women are…
- three times more likely than men to suffer from some types of back pain
- more susceptible to a whiplash injury
- prone to low back pain
And that bra straps, high heels, and hormonal swings add to the chances of women suffering from an aching back.
Christine Lasich MD knows all this and more. Having suffered from chronic low back pain herself and acutely aware of the lack of gender-specific information on preventing and dealing with back pain, Christine has written the highly informative and entertaining High Heels to Hormones: A Woman’s Guide to Spinal Care.
Featuring short easy to read chapters illustrated with pencil stick cartoons, High Heels to Hormones is an effective self help guide for woman. The contents include information on how everyth...

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to ‘dance like no one is watching’.
Turns out it’s not such a bad idea. Dancing, it seems, has many health benefits. Besides the obvious - it is exercise and therefore should help you keep fit - dancing is also good for lowering the risk of dementia, helping those with depression, and improving balance for those with Parkinsons.
So I’m going to make good my resolution and ‘dance like no one is watching’. And for inspiration, I’ll follow the lead of Matt Harding, better known for his video ‘Where the Hell is Matt?’. He doesn’t care whether anyone is watching or not. He just keeps on dancing his way around the world. And it looks like fun…

Shrimp equals sexy? Pfffft!
Or so you say…
Actually, shrimp (along with walnuts, leafy greens and other foods bursting with omega-3 fatty acids) can help boost your libido. Why? They increase the production of dopamine, which enhances pleasure. And generally, enhanced pleasure is a darn good thing, no?
This, my friends, was your very simple Sexbolt Saturday Happy Living Tip. Now, off you go to Red Lobster or your seafood joint of choice. Don’t forget to add the salad!

So you’re at the gym and everyone around you has earplugs in. Ever wonder what they are listening to? Well, here’s your chance.
According to a survey conducted by Fitness First, the UK’s largest gym operator, it’s pretty much ‘cheesy pop music’ - music that you’d never admit to listening to normally.
Those surveyed favored the following…

Eye of the tiger - Survivor
Holiday - Madonna
Jump - Van Halen
The Final Countdown - Europe
Dancing Queen - Abba
Life is a roller coaster - Ronan Keating
I should be so lucky - Kylie
Love Machine - Girls Aloud
Umbrella - Rihanna
Disco Queen - Hot Chocolate

Turns out ‘Eye of the Tiger’, ‘Jump’, and ‘The Final Countdown’ inspires male gym-goers the most, whereas female gy...

There’s nothing better than a dip in the pool on a hot summer’s day, no?
Well, um, maybe you ought to stick to the sprinkler instead.
Pools (of the public variety), it seems, are often loaded with a creepy parasite called Cryptosporidium, which can bless you with a week or two of barfing, diarrhea or cramps. Good times.
The problem with “Crypto” is that it is resistant to chlorine, leading it to hang out in pool water longer than the average microorganism. In fact, more than a thousand swimmers get sick every year in the US by diving into an affected public pool.

It’s Sexbolt Saturday again, my kittens, and we got a hold of an article that spells out 56 glorious reasons to meet up in the sheets. Now, those 56 reasons are fab, indeed, but some of them we’ve already shared with you here, here, and here. Because, you know, we like to give you lots of reasons to have sex. As if you needed some more.
But if you’re mojo ain’t quite where you’d like it to be this weekend, give these a read (hell, have your honey read ‘em, too) and get ready for one sassy samba in the sack.
Enjoy! And Happy Sexbolt Saturday!

Got a thing for carbs? First of all, welcome to the club. I am the Carbohydrates Anonymous Prez, nicetameetcha.
Second, there is hope for us yet.
If pastas, breads and potatoes make your heart sing, perhaps you’re not getting deep enough sleep at night.
Huh?
Yep, evidently, sound sleeping helps regulate the hormones in charge of carb cravings and the blood sugar spikes often associated with them. It’s important to remember even the smallest of noises can disrupt your rest, so try using earplugs or a white noise machine for those carb-crunching Zzzzz’s you so desperately need.

The lovely ladies at Alzheimer’s Notes inform us that today is National Siesta Day. Coincidentally, it’s also my birthday. Excuse me while I take that as a sign that I should be spending my Big Day snoozing. ;)

Along with the host of reasons the Siesta Awareness site gives us to nap, here’s another: Napping at least 3 days a week leaves you 37% less likely to keel over from heart disease than someone who never naps. This from a study of over 23,000 people!
Wouldn’t you have loved to been a subject in that study? And wouldn’t it be nice if instead of blood pressure meds and low cholesterol diets, doctors prescribed 30 minute naps instead?

If you want a little more out of “pumpkin” than to use it as a sappy nickname, start by eating the seeds.
Why? Because pumpkins pack even more amounts of tryptophan than a whole turkey dinner. And we all know the magic of tryptophan from Turkey Day 101, right? Feelings of relaxation and peacefulness. Ahhhh…
Well, tryptophan works by morphing into seratonin, (which is known for fighting depression, reducing anxiety, and minimizing anger), making tryptophan pretty much the Wonder Amino Acid. In fact, in a recent study, folks who were asked to give a speech after eating a pumpkin seed bar had much lower heart rates and anxiety an hour later than those who didn’t have the seeds.

But, the fix could be just the thing that summertime is all about…Ice Cream!!!!

Some of the best news I’ve heard since drinking beer, wine, and hot cocoa, eating steak, and getting more sleep became practically medically necessary: Messy desks are da bomb! And yes, I just said “da bomb” in public. That’s how excited I am.
Though my desk borders on “catastrophic” rather than “messy”, I am encouraged by new research from Professor Eric Abrahamson, Ph. It’s June. School’s out for most of you. So your kids are staying up later and later, right, since they can’t fall asleep when it’s still light out? Unfortunately, that means only one thing:
You have less time at night to get your funk on. In the bedroom.
It’s been a problem for parents for eons, but maybe there is a solution. And it has to do with high heels.
Wear them.
Because when doing so, you are likely to improve your sex drive, making those jump-start macking sessions easier to, well, jump start.
See, a study by the University of Verona in Italy found that women whose feet are elevated at a 15 degree angle (that’s about a 3 inch heel), have more relaxed pelvic muscles than those...

Well, you don’t have to tell me twice to follow this advice:
Get more sleep!
So the deal here is that we can go about our business, scraping for anything remotely resembling rest, or we can make sleep a priority and lose weight. Boy, I’m just not sure on that one. Lemme think a sec…
Okay, yeah, I’ll play. I am officially on board with the findings that too-little sleep ends with a 40% increase in cortisol in the blood (cortisol is a stress hormone that’s been proven to slow down metabolism). Not only that, but you might also experience a whopping 33% increase in hunger pangs and cravings, which you know you’re bo...

What does love do for you, other than make you googly-eyed and smiley? Plenty.
Image details: Love spelt in silver letters served by picapp.com
As I prepare to celebrate my 10th wedding anniversary tomorrow, I was thrilled to come across a small article listing 4 fabulous “side-effects” to being in a loving relationship.
1) Lower stress hormones
2) More physical activity (of all kinds, ahem)
3) Less likely to smoke
4) Decrease in blood pressure
Wow! Seems not only does love affect your emotional heart, it’s great for your physical ticker as well.
Sounds like I have lots to celebrate! Grab your honey and celebrate being in love along with me, won’t you?

Yes, ladies, your man can (and probably does) fake it from time to time.
How do you like them apples?
Shocking, of course. Conventional wisdom says that it’s the ladies who excel at Oscar-worthy fake orgasmic performances, while the boys are genuinely pleasured every time.
But not so, says this article. In fact, due to increased usage in anti-depressants, and other life’s stresses, reaching the Big O can occasionally be elusive for menfolk as well.
The cure? Same things as for the ladies:
1) Have sex only when you want to. Forcing yourself to have sex when you’re not in the mood can make you feel indignant and resentful. It’s not doing your partner any good either, since that feeling of closeness won’t be there if you’re mentally pulling away.
2) Relax....

Lip gloss: it’s a woman’s staple. For some guys, too, I ’spose, but who am I to judge?
Anyhoo…the use of lip gloss tragically misleads many a person into thinking their lips are protected while out in the sun. Well guess what? They’re not.
In fact, the same super shininess that makes lip gloss lip gloss, can actually be quite detrimental by inviting the sun’s rays right onto your kisser. Think of it as hoisting up a magnifying glass to your lips in the middle of the Sahara. Not cool, right?
Now while no links have actually been made between lip gloss and skin cancer, it is safe to say that when heading out onto the boat o...

According to the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, stoking up a vanilla-scented candle can reduce anxiety by 63%. That’s a ton!
While vanilla was the scent of choice in this instance, researchers acknowledge that scent is handled by the same area of the brain as memory, so smelling any aroma that brings back good feelings for you can have the same effect.
So if relaxation, calmness and optimism are on your To-Do list today, grab your Bic and light that wick.
This has been your Happy Living Tip for the day. Enjoy.

Play is essential to a child’s social, emotional, and academic life.
So why are schools shunning recesses and physical education for structured academics and testing?
And why does it seem that parents are turning play from something fun and frivolous into something that must be productive and controlled?
These are some of the questions that the latest issue of Greater Good magazine tries to answer. They have put together an interesting and thought provoking series of articles examining the past and present culture of play and why it seems to be vanishing.

Is sleep that elusive thing that is so close for you, yet so far away? Well listen up, people - literally.
Since a good night’s rest is essential for the purposes of problem-solving and gaining a fresh perspective, you really need to do whatever’s in your power to get that shut eye.
And according to the Journal of Advanced Nursing, simply listening to soft, serene music for about 45 minutes before slumber time may be an easy fix. In fact, people who did so were found to sleep deeper and longer. Not only that, they also woke up more alert the next day than those who didn’t didn’t listen to restful music.
See, that iPod’s good for something other than drowning out the sound of fighting kids, now isn’t it?...

Congratulations! You’ve been in a committed relationship for a while now. That’s great, right? Well, sure. Unless you consider the staleness your sex life seems to have taken on.
Let’s face it folks, after a while, sex with the same person day in and day out can get…monotonous. While this is surely not true for every couple, many couples are looking to heat things up, but are unsure how.
Enter: Sexual Role Playing.
Yes, this takes some effort. Yes, it can be awkward at first. Yes, you run the risk of freaking each other out if you’re not ready to accept or consider your partner’s (or your own) fantasies. But what your relationship has to gain can far outweigh these potential “cons”.

Litter Box = Healthy Heart. Who Knew?

Great news for kitty lovers: Turns out your feline friends do more than keep your toes warm at night - they help keep your heart healthy, too.
A recent study from the University of Minnesota found that owning a cat can slash your risk of dying from a heart attack by up to 40 percent. Evidently, having kitty around can help soothe away the harmful effects of stress and anxiety. Suddenly, dealing with the litter box doesn’t seem quite so vexing, now does it?
Of course, it’s best to keep exercising and eating right, but if it’s been one of “those days”, spend some extra time with your furry pal and make your heart (and your pet) happy.

In a lot of homes, eggs are those things you buy because you feel like you’re supposed to, but then after weeks of neglect, find themselves in the bottom of your trash barrel. You may have meant well, but meaning well doesn’t cook those puppies into omelets, now does it?
Well today, we’re here to encourage you to buy that carton of eggs, crack those babies open and scramble, fry, poach or boil away. And why? Eggs are packed with a B vitamin called folic acid. Many people recognize folic acid as the pre-conception wonder supplement which helps prevent neural tube abnormalities in a developing fetus. But folic acid is also a mood-elevating nutrient. In fact, adding folic acid to your diet can diminish bad moods, depression, anger, an...

Dang! Another instance where conventional wisdom and years-old treatments have failed us yet again.
Bloody noses - a staple in the lives of kids, sports-playing teens and allergy-ridden adults - are not to be treated by tipping the head back as once was thought. Instead, you are to lower and tip your head forward, catching any wayward bleeding in a tissue.
Why is this? Because tipping the head back will send blood down into the esophagus and potentially into the stomach, which can be irritating and possibly cause vomiting. But by leaning the head forward, you can avoid such issues.
Other treatment tips? Pinch the meaty party of your nose on the sides just below your bridge to help ease bleeding. Also be sure to keep your nose above heart level, which can also help slow things down.

I figured you’d have to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jessica Alba to score even decently on it, but after reading Liz’s results, I was encouraged. A real person who does not spend the bulk of her day in a gym and who probably noshes on a carb or two once in a while? If Liz could score well, so could I, right?
Well, turns out Liz is on track to last a bit longer than I’m predicted to, but I’ll still live a long life it seems. Naturally, by kicking up my fruit and veggie consumption and actually removing my rear form this chair to sneak in some exercise, I can add more years to my life. Hmm. I can do that. I need to do ...

I’m not one for questionaires and surveys but this Vitality Compass, an online longevity calculator, had me intrigued.
I wanted to know…was I in the Blue Zone? What was my life expectancy? And were my current life habits going to lead the way to a grand old age of 100 plus?
So I headed on over and took the Vitality Compass quiz.
Thirty five questions later, I got my answer.
I exist in the Blue Zone.
I’m 6.5 years younger biologically than my real age. Of course I’d rather it was 10 or 15 years younger but still any number less that the real one works for me.
My life expectancy is 95.8.
But my healthy life expectancy is only 84.
Looks like I’m not on track to reach 100 but maybe that’s just as well given the last decade or two might not be that healthy.

Go Nuts to Reduce Stress

Want an easy way to reduce stress naturally? Go nuts!
Assuming you’re not allergic to nuts, eating as little as one once of these little wonders can pump a ton of calming nutrients into your harried body. And after a l-o-n-g week, that’s probably exactly what you need right now, right? Thought so.
Nuts contain blood-pressure lowering B vitamins (which tend to get depleted when your muscles are tense), anxiety-kicking zinc, and vitamin E, a super antioxidant which helps protect cells from the damages caused by chronic nervousness.
What’s more? The simple act of cracking open a nut (so buy them shelled) can be a stress reliever in and of itself!
So there you have it. Go nuts this weekend and feel all the better for it!

Spring is in the air for many of us, and usually that means allergies, yard work and the weeds that cause a lot of allergies and yard work.
But the next time you see a stray dandelion pop up in your yard, don’t be so quick to dig it up. Instead, admire it for it’s stress-busting abilities.
Here’s the scoop: The leaves of a dandelion are packed with calming B vitamins and lethicin, which lessen stress and anxiety by balancing chemicals in your brain. Dandelions also boost levels of the happy chemical, seratonin.
Now, we’re not recommending that you run out and pluck these from your yard to make a meal out of. But the next time you head to the grocer, look for premixed salad kits that include dandelio...

So Healthbolt is going to talk green too. Green health that is.
Here’s our common sense tips to greener health…
Sleep more - not only is sleep good for your health, it’s also good for the environment. When you sleep, your energy consumption is significantly reduced.

Become a locavore - eating lots of fruit and vegetables will keep us healthy. Buying your fruit and vegetables locally will keep the planet healthy.
Cycle or walk to work - get fit and reduce vehicle emissions at the same time. Sounds like a win/win situation.
And here’s what others are saying about green health…
Treehugger suggests that you can Save Money - and Your Health - by Going Green.

Random Fact of the Day: Stress Does Cause Gray Hair

Just the news you wanted to hear to start your week, right? Sorry, but it’s true. Stress can, in fact, cause your hair to gray.
Why? Stress hormones like cortisol can mess with melanocytes (simply, hair cells). Suddenly, the cells have trouble surviving and/or producing the pigment that keeps your hair its original color. Hence, those pigments disappear and out pops a gray (or white) hair.
Naturally, controlling stress is a good defense in this type of situation, but that might not always be possible. Eating foods rich in the amino acids lysine and arginine can help provide a drop in stress, however, so if you’re feeling a bit on edge, grab some peanuts and a carton of yogurt. These superfoods can get you halfway to the recommended 3 grams of lysine and arginine that Slovakian...

To piggy-back on Liz’s post from earlier today, there’s a whole other issue to be dealt with for all those tech freaks roaming the earth - the lack of a good sex life.
Of course, this is not true of everyone, just as not every blogger will suffer a work-induced heart attack. But it is becoming more and more evident that an overly-wired life does not equate to a stellar relationship in the sack.
For example, back rubs can be a bit hard to finagle while your fingers are furiously texting on your Treo. Vaulting over a laptop to move in for a kiss can be a little discerning. And (unless it’s porn) playing your favorite show on your killer plasma TV while trying to get in the groove can be distracting at best. Starting to see a trend?
In fact, thirty-seven percent of laptop ow...

Now it’s back in the news with a New York Times article - In Web World of 24/7 Stress, Writers Blog Till They Drop - questioning once again whether blogging is bad for your health….
Two weeks ago in North Lauderdale, Fla., funeral services were held for Russell Shaw, a prolific blogger on technology subjects who died at 60 of a heart attack. In December, another tech blogger, Marc Orchant, died at 50 of a massive coronary. A third, Om Malik, 41, survived a heart attack in December.
Other bloggers complain of weight loss or gain, sleep disorders, exhaustion and other maladies born of the nonstop strain of producing...

I just spent the last 5 days on a road trip (along the stunning West Coast of New Zealands’ South Island) and it got me thinking about cars. In particular, it got me thinking about how cars affect our health.
So I did a little checking and it seems that cars (especially new ones) might not be all that good for our health.
According to an article originally published in Men’s Health, we have numerous invisible hitchhikers inside our new cars. To be exact, there are chemicals lurking in the interior of the car. A study conducted by the Ecology Center found that the two prime suspects - phthalates and bromiated flame retardants (such as deca) - are toxins known to lead to liver, kidney, brain, and thyroid damage in rodents.
But wait, there’s more. The same year that the Ecol...

Well, it turns out the mirror is now on the web and while it doesn’t offer an answer to the above rhyme, it can show you a glimpse of the future.
Good Morning America correspondent Andrea Canning recently checked out this new technology from two different companies.
Accenture Technology Labs is making a ‘persuasive mirror’ (not yet on the market) that is designed to show you exactly what bad habits - smoking, overeating, alcohol, sunbathing - can do to your face over a period of 6 months.
AgeMe.com by Aprilage Development takes this even further, providing an image of your face over the years rather than just months.
Fascinating stuff.
But will it really change a person&#8217...

You love the feeling of the Big O (duh!), but getting to that point with your partner has become a little, um, lackluster. What was once fun, sexy and hotter than hell has now turned into a ritualistic lead-in to your ho-hum romp sessions.
This doesn’t have to be, people!
The quickest fix for a sexual rut is (no surprise here) to switch things up. Sounds simple, but for couples with kids or hairy schedules, a simple reminder that variety is indeed the spice of life is usually in order. Now, obviously a ...

Money might not buy happiness but how you spend your money could just make you happier according to a new study conducted by the Harvard Business School and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
The results of the study, published in the latest edition of Science, were based on a series of experiments that examined the question ‘How could people use their money more effectively so that it would actually deliver more happiness?’
Three experiments were conducted…
The first featured 632 Americans who were asked to rate their happiness on a five point scale, report their annual income, and estimate the amount they spend in a typical month on bills, gifts for themselves and others, and charitable donations. The results showed that those who spent more money on oth...

With a some spare time on my hands, I spent the morning wandering the blogosphere checking out what everyone has to say. Here’s what I found…
Tim Ferris, author of The Four Hour Workweek, shares his thoughts on various methods to get rid of the common cold with 4 Anti Cold Cocktails That Work: From Ancient China to German Alcoholics and Modern Labs. With winter on the way over here in New Zealand, this is one post I’ll be bookmarking for future reference.
Over at Cranky Fitness, Merry was in a St Patrick’s Day frame of mind and asking Does Green Beer Have More Vegetable Goodness? Thankfully, it didn’t take Merry long to figure out that the green beer was a product of food coloring and not vegetables and move instead to discuss the good, the bad, and possibily...

Go Slow…Part Two.

I mentioned the Improv Everywhere last month, highlighting their Frozen Grand Central Station mission.
Well, it turns out this concept of becoming ‘frozen in time’ is catching on. People from all over the world have been inspired to conduct their own frozen missions.
Check these out…
Paris

London

And if that’s not enough for you, there are over 30 more frozen cities missions to check out.
Seems like everyone really does want to ‘go slow.’
And given the fact that most of us aren’t getting enough sleep, slowing down is probably not such a bad idea.

Nothing says “I just had one helluva great sleep” better than a face filled with creases compliments of your pillow. We’re talking creases on the cheeks, creases near your eyes and even creases by your mouth. Liberty posted last week about a great way to deal with injections.
“Next time you find yourself with a needle barreling toward any one of your body parts, revert back to your toddler days and begin counting out loud to anyone who will listen. And why is that? Because Japanese researchers were good enough to find that counting may effectively numb you to injection pain. “
It’s a great idea and will probably work for the majority of people having to face the needle. But for a small percentage of us (and yes, I include myself), the idea of injections and needles turn us into quivering, irrational messes.
We are needle phobic and it’s no laughing matter.

Marines Help Heal Girl’s Broken Heart
She was a two year old Iraqi girl born with a large hole in her heart and a severe obstruction between her heart and lungs. They were a group of battle weary US Marines. One could say that it was fate that brought them together. And together they fixed her broken heart.

Happy Saturday, All! If a boring weekend looms ahead, chuck your Honey-Do list in exchange for a healthy romp (or three). Because our bodies, God bless them, need The Big O to keep them healthy and strong. How’s that for a reason to get funky? Here’s the scoop:

Say good-bye to expensive skin and hair care regimens - ramped-up production of hormones courtesy of The All-Mighty Orgasm contribute to shiny hair and smooth skin.
Orgasms even prevent frown lines from deepening!
Forget the Prozac - orgasms release endorphins (feel-good hormones) into our brains and instantly make us feel calmer and less-stressed.
Those same endorphins stimulate our immune systems, heading off illnesses. See ya, Zicam!
Tylenol who? Orgasms pump natural painkillers into our bloodstreams, heading off mil...

Yeah, I know this is a health blog but we thought it be nice to give you all something sweet and from the heart this Valentine’s Day.
And what could be sweeter that a cupcake…shaped like a heart. These were found over at Street Anatomy.

Okay, so they might look a little too realistic, what with the arteries and veins, and bleeding ‘jam’. But aren’t they something?
Want to make some ? Here’s the recipe…
Or you could go with something a little more traditional such as Red Velvet Cupcakes…

Either way, here at Healthbolt we wish you are very Happy Valentines Day.

Gentlemen, are you ready to hear the one thing that promises to turn your lady into a bubbly pile of mush this Valentine’s Day? Here it is:
Do some freaking housework.
That’s it. Plain and simple. Engaging in a little “Choreplay” will get your lady so revved up and relaxed (yes, at the same time) that she may even be waiting at the bedroom door for you in that teddy you bought her years ago that she hasn’t worn once.
Alas, this revelation is not just a compilation of females banding together to make your life miserable. Instead, this is based on real, scientific data (and God bless the scientists who conducted this study, by the way). Here’s the scoop:
Researchers at the American University of Beirut studied 1,652 married couples and found t...

Travelodge is at it again. They conducted a survey of 3,000 adults to find out what kept them awake at night. Surprisingly, it wasn’t noise or unfamiliar surroundings that caused the most problem. Instead, it was itchy nightclothes and body temperature changes throughout the night.
Always up for a challenge, Travelodge decided to create a line of sleepware designed for maximum comfort. They commissioned designers to come up with pyjamas that would not only regulate body temperature but also stop the itch. The result - itch-free pyjamas - made from Dermasilk, a fabric that’s known to take the itch out of excema and dermatitis.

If your Valentine’s Day is likely to have some chocolate interspersed into it, then lucky you! Be sure you either grab your lovah or position yourself in Cupid’s path because Hallelujah, you’re in for a treat.
What’s all the fuss, you ask? Well doctors from The Mind Lab in England hooked up the hearts and brains of study couples to monitors, then asked them to experience both chocolate and a kiss independently (that is, one without the other). What they found is that the chocolate stimulated their hearts to pound and the pleasure centers in their brains to fire up quite a bit more strongly than just a kiss (even a passionate one). What’s more, the positive effects lasted about 4 times longer!
So what’s the moral of this story? If kisses are ...

I am not a disciple of yoga but I’ve taken to humming ‘om’ at the strangest times - like now as I type this post.
Why ?
Because I read an article recently that said humming can help keep my sinuses healthy and clear.
As someone who suffers from allergic rhinitis (hay fever) that occassionally develops into sinusitis, I am always on the lookout for ways to stop the sneezing, the dripping, and the blocked nose. I’m tired of nasal sprays and medicine. I want to try something new.
Hence the humming. And I sure hope you can’t hear me, cause it’s not a pleasant sound. There’s no tune or rhythm, just a loud humming noise which is v...

Here’s a shocking statistic I read recently: 86% of us are satisfied with our jobs. Can you believe it? Add up all the time we spend bitching about bosses, coworkers, the bitter coffee and the freezing cold break room, and I’d have pegged only a few of us for liking our gigs. In fact, I have gobs of friends working in “the real world” (as opposed to my dream life blogging, neener-neener) who routinely take mental health days and (cough, cough) turn up sick a bunch.
But no, says a Chicago university. Only a scant 14% of workers truly aren’t happy.
Are you one who isn’t? Well, hang in there if you possibly can - the same study also found that job satisfaction increases with age. Hm.
One suggestion, though: If you’re not taking your vacat...

Guys, if you think PMS is the worst thing about your lady’s “monthly visitor”, we have news for you, don’t we girls? Yep, underneath the exterior of our once-a-month bitchy wrath lies a whole other issue that you may not even know about…cramps.
As if it’s not bad enough we have to endure a week of Aunt Flow, we also have to be in pain besides. Now how is that fair? Um, it’s not. But hallelujah, now there are some fresh-from-nature fixes to ease us through. If you’re a guy, do yourself a favor and don’t click out. Keep reading and surprise your woman with one or two of these saviors - you’ll be her hero forever (and make life a whole lot easier for yourself!)

Having trouble sleeping when your traveling. ? Not to worry. Travelodge think they have the answer - watch a goldfish.
Travelodge had a sleep survey study done that found “…63% of the nation [Britain] is sleep deprived due to stress and 58% claimed watching goldfish could be the answer.”
It’s been accepted for years that watching fish has a relaxing and de-stressing affect on people. Think about it - the waiting rooms of dentists and doctors all have fish tanks for the sole purpose of helping their clients relax.
So Travelodge decided to trial ‘goldfish therapy’ at two of their hotels - the Leeds Vicar Lane and the Birmingham Fort Dunlop Travelodge in Engl...

Need a few ideas to light up your love life? We got ‘em (and we thank the Almighty Men’s Health for some reminders). Here’s what you can do…starting TODAY!

Give the girl a coffee. Research has shown that female rats wanted more sex after a shot of caffeine. Indulge in some pre-nookie brew together and watch what happens next.
Engage in some pre-dinner skroinking. Sex tames stress, so before you sit down to break bread together, have a little appetizer…in bed.
Put the “We” in Wii. Breaking a sweat together can get you fired up in a hurry, so bust out the video games to spark a friendly bout of competition…the winner gets first dibs on the sexual favor of their choice.
Hug each other before hitting the shower. The smell of a man&#...

Concerned about your growing weight? Then maybe it’s time to do the hara hachi bu. Practiced by the Okinawan people for generations, it simply means ‘to eat until you are 80% full’.
Now, Okinawa has one of the healthiest and longest living populations in the world, so there must be something to this.
Let’s face it, eating less is not a practice done in most Western societies. We are given plates piled high with food and then expected to empty them. I don’t know about you, but as a child I wasn’t allowed to leave the dinner table until the plate was wiped clean. And how many of you got the old ‘don’t waste t...

Ready for a little hot-cha-cha in the boudoir? Then skip the pricey lingerie and hit the bricks instead.
That’s right. A recent study by the University of Arkansas says that people who regularly work out find themselves more sexually desirable, and you know what that means…more satisfying workouts in the sack!
Not only that, but Duke University also found that when overweight men and women lost a mere 10 percent of their body weight, they enjoyed sex more.
So there you have it - the most simple sex tip around: Work. Out. To. Feel. Hotter. It’s not rocket science that a positive self-image would lead to better sexual experiences, but sometimes we just need a little reminder, do we not?
And speaking of reminders, keep in mind that you don’t have to senten...

With a recent study indicating that pregnant women consuming 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day increase their risk of miscarriage, it’s important to know what products contain caffeine and how much.
Caffeine, of course, is mostly found in coffee, chocolate, coke, and energized soft drinks.
But it seems that it can also be found in the strangest places. For example…
Shower Shock Soap
Running late with no time for a morning coffee. No problem - just lather up with the Shower Shock Soap. It smells of peppermint but it contains enough caffeine to let you absorb 200 mg per wash.

There’s a new movement in the medical world, and what better time to address it than right after New Year’s - you know, with one of your top resolutions being “get organized” and what not. (Right?!?)
The deal? All that clutter you’ve dismissed as nothing more than a nuisance…is actually harmful to your health.
This is so not good news for me as I jockey around mounds of papers and magazines to get at my keyboard each day (job hazards. Oy.) But what the experts are saying makes sense. Take a look:

Getting organized helps reduce the risk for falls
Cleaning up helps eliminate germs
Decluttering makes it easier to find medications, exercise equipment, and other gear imperative to your good health

If you’ve been reading all the articles and studies in the news recently you might start thinking that Christmas is really bad for your health.
It seems that in order to survive Christmas these days you have to navigate through numerous health obstacles - the Christmas Tree Sneezes, the Merry Christmas Coronary, the Christmas Blues, the Christmas Bulge, and the Christmas Binge.
So to help you survive all these Christmas health hazards, here’s a few tips from Healthbolt…

Moderation is always the key, even at Christmas.

Oh, Oh…Ohhhhhh!
Yeah, yeah. We all know that exercise makes the body healthy and helps all our organs perform at maximum capacity. But did you know there are separate exercises designed especially for “down there”?
Ladies and Germs, meet Kegels.
If you are not already an avid Kegeler, boy are you missing out. Just a simple exercise can make a world of difference during your steamy sheet sessions. Want to learn more? We thought so.
What the heck is a Kegel?

Named for Dr. Arnold Kegel, a Kegel is simply an exercise designed to strengthen the pelvic floor.

How do you do them?

Simple. Contract and release the muscles around your hoo-ha, the ones that control the flow of your pee.

Why bother?

For Ladies: Kegels help make the va-jay-jay tighter, igniting greater friction ...

Toilet Etiquette in Space.

One of the most frequently asked questions of NASA engineers is “How do astronauts use the toilet in space?” It’s a question even HRH Prince Phillip of England asked when he toured a space facility earlier this year. A seriously important question, I feel, given that tourists will eventually be travelling into space.
Let’s face it, when you’re in a situation of zero gravity where everything floats, the one thing you definitely don’t want floating is human waste.
The answer - a vacuum toilet that sucks up the contents of the toilet chamber via an air flow system. Sounds painful but it’s not. In order for this to work, a tight seal between the user and the toilet is required. Therefore, straps are positioned to hold the feet against the floor and piv...

Change, Change, Change! Change the Fool.
Remember being told that change should be accomplished in bite-sized pieces? Not to set the bar so high that you can never really succeed? Take everything one day, one step at a time?
Well, it turns out all that mind-easing positivity was a bunch of horse-puckey. The new deal is when you’re setting out to make changes for the better (uh…New Year’s Resolutions, anyone?) you should lump them into groups. Here’s the thought:
When we make multiple resolutions that all reinforce and depend upon each other, we are more likely to stick with the individual goals for the long haul.
For example, if you set a goal to reach an ideal weight, lower blood pressure, and quit smoking, rather than just committing to one of these things, you wo...

If even the thought of going to the gym makes you break out in hives, fear not. You can get just as good a workout by heading for the nearest shopping mall.
Before the workout going shopping
Always make sure you have something healthy to eat before you hit the gym mall. After all, you’ll need energy, stamina and mental concentration to complete the workout shopping. And don’t forget the water bottle. Shopping is thirsty work.
Eating before you shop also reduces the risk of eating at the mall, where, let’s face it, we usually end up consuming food high in calories and fat.
Warm Up
Any good workout requires a warm up regime. So don’t park the car at the entrance to the mall. Look for a parking space at the edge of the car park and then walk briskly to the shops. In...

At Last…a Brain Gym!

This sounds like my kind of gym. No weights, no trendmill, and no exercycle. Just computers, software, books, and smart snacks like tea and walnuts.

Only one problem. This Brain Gym is in San Francisco…maybe a little too far for most of us to go.
But not to worry, it’s the wave of the future. More and more Baby Boomers, worried about the escalating numbers of people developing Alzheimer’s Disease, are looking for ways to keep not only their bodies but also their minds strong. Somehow I think that there will be more Brain Gyms on the horizon.
To find out more about the Brain Gym, read this interesting article in the San Francisco Chronicle: ‘Brain gym’ may exorcise Boomers’ fears about aging

28 Things the Health Experts Forget About That REALLY Matter for Your Health

When we think about our health, we usually focus on things like wrinkles, Omega-3’s and beer bellies. Fiber may be bulky and greens may be grand, but in the scheme of things, I think the kind of life you lead may be much more important. I’m not saying a chipper outlook will squelch diabetes or that a thoughtful life will eliminate the need to hit the gym on a regular basis. But I do think that internal satisfaction cannot help but to create a right relationship with yourself, your body, and your life. (I know, I know…what is this impenetrable silver lining and what have you done with Sara?)
Here are 28 things health experts don’t talk about that really matter for your health.
1. Overlook small inconveniences rather than complain about them.
2. Change your own tire,...
