The Rise In Cancer Rates May Not Mean More Cancer

Several newspapers in the UK reported this week that cancer rates have risen over the past two decades. That set into motion an analysis by the excellent “Behind the Headlines” service offered by the NHS Choices website. They found this in newspapers:
“Cancer rates in the middle-aged “have jumped by almost a fifth in a generation”, according to The Daily Telegraph, which says that the increase “is thought to be mainly due to better detection of cancers rather than people adopting more unhealthy lifestyles”. The Sun takes the alternate view, saying that doctors are “blaming the rise on obesity and home boozing”. The Daily Mail similarly suggests that lifestyle changes are to blame.”

Another New Adhd Drug Hits The Headlines

Yet another ADHD drug has hit the headlines and as usual it has several rather alarming drawbacks coupled with seemingly positive features. Clonidine for ADHD is mainly a blood pressure drug. It seems to be effective at lessening hyperactivity and impulsiveness. As it does not really help attention at all, it has to be taken together with a stimulant so now we have two drugs and both their side effects to cope with. All because they may have done well in the trials organised by the drug companies and because Clonidine side effects have been brushed under the carpet.
Clonidine is also useful for reducing tics and Tourette’s Syndrome but at what price? Patients and children report feeling absolutely washed out, exhausted and weird. The reason is that it slows down the brain and reduces...

Did you see these recent celebrity outbursts?

First, Serena Williams on the court of of the US Open showing one of the worst displays of poor sportsmanship ever displayed by an elite athlete in a very, very long time:

Second, Kanye West at last night's VMA awards attempting to steal Taylor Swift's thunder (only to have it backfire the entire evening):

William's refuses to apologize, making matters much worse for her. She was fined $10,000 but has not apologized for her behavior. Elite athlete or not, she has to play by the same rules as every one else, especially in the arena of sportsmanship and decorum. If nothing else, just as a role model, would she want a young tennis player to behave as she did and not be remoreseful for it? Clearly the loss of money didn't leave enough ...

Not really, but I’d imagine that headline caught your eye and grabbed your attention, which is what it was supposed to do. The study on which that claim is based was widely and often quite misleadingly trumpeted across the Internet yesterday (July 6, 2009). Although some responsible sites included in the headline that the tests were done in mice, many concealed this important fact until you were well into the article and had already been exposed to whatever advertising was on the page. I’d already seen several misleading headlines before I realized the studies were in mice and I’m sure that many people didn’t ever get the full story.
The entire webisode was set in motion by the University of South Florida Health’s press release, a slick piece of PR entitled &#...

This study highlights that our sense of "what is essential" has become skewed towards all that is plugged in. If our kids can not deal without technology for a bit, if we can not deal without technology for a bit, it's time we took a collective big step back and realized that we actually can. It will feel strange and foreign for a day or so but life will go on because our "essentials"...food, shelter, oxygen, family...are met.©2009 Pediatrics Now. All rights reserved.

Caught an interesting article recently that wondered what happened to all of our fears about disease outbreaks. You remember the hoopla over SARS, West Nile, and the Avian flu?
For a while, that’s all anyone could talk about. We were watching the crows in our backyard closely because if you saw one dead it could mean the West Nile virus had killed it. People were buying surgical masks and staying away from standing water.

Are diabetes headlines in the mainstream media mostly a bunch of hype, or do they bring us real hope for the future? The panel I moderated on this topic at the Diabetes Research Institute’s annual conference in New York City last week produced quite a lively discussion.
A call for YOUR pressing questions!
This coming Saturday, Oct. 25, is the Diabetes Research Institute’s annual conference in New York. One of the main topics is making sense of news coverage on diabetes — are the headlines all just a bunch of hype, or do they bring us real hope?

I’m not real sure why this was making headlines yesterday, but apparently the fact that the FDA required a black box warning on older antipsychotic medications was news on a slow news day. Here’s why it wasn’t news:

Both conventional antipsychotics and atypical antipsychotics are not approved for use in elderly patients with dementia.

The risk of death for atypical antipsychotics in this patient group is 3.2 times more likely, and is 1.7 times more likely for those taking conventional antipsychotics. In other words, conventional antipsychotics are still nearly twice as safe and carry half the risk of an atypical antipsychotic.

Others have written about the ENCODE project, so for now, I will not dwell on it. What did catch my attention was this headline

First Chapter of Human DNA ‘Encyclopedia’ Rewrites Biology
Headlines like the one above from an article in WebMD always give me a chuckle. How would a layperson relate to such a headline? What would they think when they first saw it?
I also disagree with Michael Snyder equating the human genome to a sports car. The latter is far simpler .
I’ve said before, science has a marketing problem. Headlines like these is one reason why.

Kevin MD posted an interesting link yesterday that make me think. The link takes you to a post on the Washington Post web site This post tells an all too familiar story today: a woman finds a lump, gets a mammogram, and is giving uncertain news - not good, not bad. Many, as in this case, are told that all that's needed is a repeat in 6 months. I know many women who have faced this issue, including myself. The core issue here is as much about whether waiting is the appropriate course of action as it is about faith in the system - faith that waiting is the "right" option when story after story we learn of women, like Sheryl Crow, who were in this very situation and ended up having breast cancer. I don't know a woman in the world who won't think of Sheryl if they end up finding a lump or havi...

Today I talked to Karen Swensen about some interesting studies in kids, and adults, on obesity. Click on my picture to view the video clip. The bottom line: the wake up call is today! Kids need to get more fit and learn to eat better, and parents have to become more involved. I wish there were another solution but this is really a family problem in the end and each family has to step up and help each other out.
This study really didn't tell us much more than we already knew. The bottom line is you WILL lose weight on any program if you follow it but once you go back to your pre-diet plan ways you'll regain. Thus the yo-yo cycle. This is why I am a fan of Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig. At least these plans promote eating real food combined with exercise and diets, and they don't candy coat how difficult it is to keep the weight off. Both emphasize portion control as well as living a full life. I applaud anyone attempting to shed pounds but the true work begins once you hit your goal. For most of us as adults, weight issues are life long struggles. Small increases in activity and good healthy choices daily all add up to positive results on the scale.By the way, if you read the study, the actual c...

Interesting health headlines this week:Ibuprofen Better Than Acetaminophen with Codeine for Kids' Musculoskeletal Pain (Pediatrics)Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) does seem to come out on top with pain control. I suspect it has to do with the antiinflamatory nature of the medication. The key to success with any pain intervention is to use it appropriately and judiciously for the first day or two after the injury. The key is to cut the pain cycle off at the pass.Kids Gain More Weight On Summer BreakYikes! Not at all what we would have expected. This tells me that we really are not paying attention to kids activity levels. If we were, kids would be outside playing over the summer - and we'd be there with 'em. I can't help wondering exactly when the wakeup call to today's parents will be heard - cl...

My 2cents: it is a wonderful addition to the immunization front. I'm planning on giving it to both my daughters when they hit the right age. Time will tell whether this particular vaccine will work in boys but many of us do believe protecting boys is important - especially since they are the route to infecting girls! As for whether the vaccine should be "mandatory", I b...

How could you not be alarmed by yesterday's alarming headline on Yahoo! Health News: FDA: Rotavirus vaccine may harm infants. No need to worry or call your pediatrician if your infant falls into the age group receiving RotaTeq. This is one big case of journalistic spin - the actual facts presented in the article report a very different reality than suggested by the actual headline:The government warned on Tuesday of potentially life-threatening twisting of the intestines in infants vaccinated against a virus that is the leading cause of early childhood diarrhea. The condition, called intussusception, is the same that led to the withdrawal of the first rotavirus vaccine eight years ago.The Food and Drug Administration said it was unknown whether the recently approved vaccine, called RotaTeq...

Good morning! I just returned from my family health segment on NECN. Today I talked with Karen Swensen about diagnosing psychiatric illness and ADHD in children, a very poignant topic given the recent death of Rebecca Riley who was labelled as ADHD and bipolar since the age of 2 and put on a very strong medication, clonodine. This is a difficult topic and if you have any concerns about your own children, call your pediatrician. According to the ADA web site, What is Give Kids A Smile®?The Give Kids A Smile® name was first used by the Greater St. Louis Dental Society and a group of dentists who set up a temporary full-service clinic that treated nearly 400 children over two days in February 2002.Since then the program has grown enormously, and in 2006 resulted in treatment of over 500,000 children. Events took place at approximately 2000 locations across the nation, with over 27,000 dental team volunteers and 12,000 dentists, providing free services to underserved children.
