Indian Medical Association prescribes IT skills for doctors

The national unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to make its two lakh members across the country, especially senior medical practitioners, more tech savvy. “We have noticed that, unlike young medical professionals, senior doctors by and large lack computer proficiency. They still use paper and pen for their daily records. The project will help such doctors cope with the competitive world and become tech savvy,” said national vice-president of IMA, Dr Devendra Shirole. This is great news - and will provide a huge impetus to the healthcare IT market in India ! Patients and doctor will benefit - and so will healthcare IT companies such as Plus91 ( in which I am an angel investor !) (Source: The Patient's Doctor)

" Interactive health is about making health knowledge, supportive care, and motivation available to us, anytime and anywhere, so that we can integrate this wisdom into our daily actions to live longer, healthier, happier lives. Welcome to the new era of Interactive Health."We are very nearly there now ! Everyone will have their PHR in the cloud; doctors and other medical professionals will use their EMRs to upload your medical data to this PHR, so that the medical information is automatically updated and complete. You can share portions of your PHR with others - and your doctor can prescribe Information Therapy to you, tailored to your needs ! (Source: The Patient's Doctor)

: "Eventually, the IHE-based Health Internet will support patients as equals on the Health Internet. Eventually, the routing between different IHE nodes will be more direct, and then the benefits of IHE might begin to outweigh the benefits of the simple Direct Exchange. But for now, the Direct model empowers the patient in ways the IHE model could never hope to."New models will allow patients to share their medical records with other doctors - and with other expert patients as well - many of whom can give excellent advice, since they've "been there , done that " !
Participatory Medicine: The New Face Of Personal Responsibility

Participatory Medicine is a cooperative model of health care that encourages and expects active involvement by all connected parties (health care professionals, patients, caregivers, etc.) When patients are aware of such things as their weight, BMI, blood pressure, recent key laboratory results, and so on, and when they come to the office motivated and prepared, outcomes are likely to be much better. The patient who passively waits for advice and direction from the physician is more likely to forget instructions, make excuses for failures, lack the discipline to lose the needed weight or stay on the required diet, and so forth. Patients themselves, not their doctors, must be the ones to make the essential decisions about their health. They must be able to obtain the necessary information t...

Many women in recovery from alcoholism, addiction, compulsive gambling or co-dependency may identify with this survey. The women included were heterosexual, lesbian and/or bisexual.
National Survey Shows 70% of Women Have Experienced a Sexual Health Issue
A new survey released today shows 70 percent of women report having experienced a sexual health issue, of which 22 percent felt very or extremely concerned.
The survey also found that many women claim they would be comfortable talking to a health care provider about a sexual health issue, but less than one-fifth (18%) actually visited their health care provider when they experienced one.
The survey, commissioned by the US National Women’s Health Resource Center (...

Yesterday I spent some time with the participants on the pain management programme talking about their experiences in the health care system. After reading a great wee self help pain management book written by David Hall which has a chapter on how to ‘manage’ being part of the health care system, I decided it might be a good idea to talk with the group about how to make the most of their relationships with health care providers.
I was surprised to find that many of them are saying the sort of things I thought had gone from health – things like being told ‘I don’t believe in chronic pain’, ‘there must be a cause for your pain and I’ll find it’, ‘it’s really in your head’ – along with the experiences that some ha...

You Have the Right to Your Health Data

I sometimes feel like we take one step forward and two steps back as we embrace technology. Because with the advances in providing people with access to their own health care data (including mental health data), there seems to be inevitable stumbling blocks along the way.
Insert your data into Company A’s personal health record or electronic medical record and you’ll find no easy or accessible way to get it back out. Explore the health data kept by your hospital about you and you may find important pieces missing, or just plain wrong, with no accountability or record of who put that in there.
Want to get Doctor XYZ to see your health data? Be prepared to sign a release and then play the waiting game.
Better yet, want to get a copy of all of the health data kept in your recor...

Vitamin D and Mental Health

It was with interest that I read Dr. Soram Khalsa’s post on The Huffington Post about the Vitamin D epidemic in this country today. The medical doctor writes this:
As a board certified internist, I have chosen, for the last 30 years, to take a personalized approach in my practice of integrative medicine. I have worked with literally hundreds of herbs, vitamins and dietary supplements, to help my patients, often when drugs did not work. In all this time, I have not seen one nutritional supplement that has the power to affect human health as much as vitamin D. This is because Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin — it is a hormone that has the ability to interact and affect more than 2,000 genes in the body.
Over my 30 years of practicing medicine, countless times I have had to d...
