The scandal over a consulting arrangement between Medco Health Solutions, the big pharmacy benefits manager, and a former board member at CaLPERS, the nation’s largest pension fund, is widening now that the US Securities and Exchange Commission has issued a subpoena to Medco seeking more information about consulting fees and other aspects of the relationship.
The subpoena was disclosed late last week in an SEC filing by Medco (see this) and several days after CaLPERS released the results of a specially commissioned investigation indicating that Medco ceo David Snow was implicated in the consulting arrangement, according to the 75-page report (look here).
At issue was the interplay between Medco and former CaLPERS board member Al Villalobos, who was paid more than $4 million as a Med...

Pfizer: Breaking Up Is Not Hard To Do?

After spending more than a decade growing into a behemoth by single-mindedly pursuing big acquisitions - think Warner-Lambert, Pharmacia and Wyeth - Pfizer is now signaling a change of heart. To wit, the drugmaker is said to considering the spin off or sale of all four non-pharma units, including nutritionals, consumer health, animal health and a business that makes capsules.
Moreover, Pfizer may even shed what it calls the Established Products division, a $10 billion operation that includes off-patent meds, the Greenstone generics unit and biosimilars, according to an investor note from Sanford Bernstein analyst Tim Anderson. He writes that such moves would trim Pfizer nearly in half - from about $67 billion in annual revenue to between $35 billion and $40 billion.

Still More Senators Enter The Fight Over Biosimilars

Another day, another letter to the FDA commish from a group of bipartisan US senators over the biologics debate. The latest missive comes from health committee chair Tom Harkin, John McCain, Chuck Schumer and Sherrod Brown, who are “extremely concerned about possible misinterpretations” of the biosimilars statute “that could further delay the availability of generic biologic drugs.”
They are referring to a provision in the healthcare reform law that says generics can enter the market after a brand-name biologic has had exclusivity for 12 years. But earlier this month, a different group of senators - Orrin Hatch, Kay Hagan, Michael Enzi and John Kerry - wrote FDA commish Margaret Hamburg to urge a different interpretation that would favor brand-name drugmakers and biotechs.
At issue...

Medical practice or the health-care delivery system is also an industry and rules of industry must apply to the healthcare system. This is not realized by most of the people. Neither the patient nor the political and social leadership of the citizens is willing to accept this fact. If at all, they accept this fact most reluctantly. 'Every life is precious and cannot be counted in terms of rupees', is the common statement which is still accepted by almost all sections of the society. However, this is not true. This is borne out by the compensations given by courts or compensation boards in various cases of loss of limb or life. Every life is valued differently and that is a fact. As in every industry, money must be spent to create the infrastructure and employ professionals to run the servi...

By José PineraThe Maastricht Treaty requires countries in the eurozone not to exceed a public debt of 60% of GDP. Well, now almost all of them have an official debt exceeding that ceiling. But the situation is immensely worse because European states also have huge, and largely hidden, unfunded liabilities arising from their pension and health systems. According to a 2009 study by my colleague Jagadeesh Gokhale, the true debt of the 25 European countries is, on average, 434% of GDP. And the treaties that underpin European integration do not say a word about such debt.
Greece’s true debt is 875% of GDP and its current problems are just the first act of the coming fiscal bankruptcy of Europe. In my 2004 essay “Will the Pension Time Bomb Sink the Euro?”, I concluded that...

NextGen’s New Push: Hospitals and Health Systems

Over the past few years, NextGen has been increasingly moving into the Hospital and Health Systems EMR market long dominated by Cerner and Epic. This move made large strides as NextGen’s strategic relationship with Siemens has brought several large hospital systems on-board.
Today, NextGen released their new website, logo, and marketing efforts which prominently includes Hospital and Health Systems. However, NextGen’s products are still only applicable to ambulatory settings, which precludes much of the business, and revenue, of Hospital and Health Systems. Makes one wonder what the future holds… (Source: Implementing EMRs)

Why the NHS is the sick man of Europe by James Gubb of the think tank CIVITAS argues that market-based reform in the NHS is being crushed by central direction and will fail if this pressure continues. It recognises that the NHS’s ideals of universal and comprehensive health care are admirable, but suggests the delivery mechanism is not.
The report compares the NHS with health systems in countries such as France, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands which it states succeed in delivering much higher standards of health care than the NHS for all. The key difference between the NHS and these health systems is that the state is not cast as either the main funder or provider of health care, but effective regulator.
It suggests that rather than a tax based health system, social insuranc...
