HISTalk just recorded its 1.5 millionth hit. Besides the snarky commentary, HISTalk (and the lovely new addition of HERTalk) has continued to gain readership with its dead pan commentary that is always dead-on. As the readership has grown, the quality of the tips and the accuracy of the insight has also increased. I believe nearly everyone with a need to know turns to HISTalk when they need to know.
I use HISTalk to confirm suspicions, verify trends, and dial up my own prognostication engine. I have been doing some “rumor math” and I have an interesting 1+ 1 that I put together. Check out out the following headlines and see if you can follow my arithmetic:

EMRs at OSCON

Image via Wikipedia One of the talks I wanted to attend at OSCON, but missed in the blur of booth duty and conflicting sessions was Aaron Thul’s talk on Electronic Medical Office Logistics (EMOL). The talk was a talk on PostgreSQL talk, but wrapped around what it takes to develop an EMOL solution.
The good news is that a lot of the OSCON talks are available online. Check out the pdf for Aaron’s talk, or follow on for some comments (based on just the slides) or do both.
The talk essentially goes through how a FLOSS stack (with one notable exception) can be used to build a system that can collect data from EMRs and other data sources, while maintaining regulatory standards and providing a degree of automation. I remember the first time I was sitting in on a talk on EMRs some year...

Misys to Open Source Its Software

Today I read an article about Misys leading healthcare into open source. I guess I can mostly agree with the idea of them leading into open source, but even Misys is taking baby steps into the open source realm. The article says that it’s going to “open source components of its proprietary Connect Healthcare solution”[emphasis added]. So, I don’t want to completely knock Misys for only making some components open source, but if we’re going to call them a leader in healthcare’s movement to open source then it needs to be more than just components. I think the real leader was VistaEMR (I think that’s it’s official name) was open sourced. Granted, I don’t think they had much choice, but that’s being a leader.
One thing that does look...
