So if you don't smoke, you think you are safe from getting hearing loss? (Yesterday's blog post was about smoking and hearing loss) Think again! The evidence is building that exposure to secondhand smoke also contributes to hearing loss. If parents need a good reason to keep their children away from smokers or to insist that someone nearby stop smoking, all they have to do is read this article.
I am severely allergic to cigarette smoke. Plus I am hypersensitive to it. I can not be near someone smoking, or even around someone who has just smoked, because of how severely the smoke affects me. So it gives me great personal pleasure to introduce this article on smoking and hearing loss. Does smoking cause hearing loss? The scientific evidence seems to say yes, it does! That case also became the basis for a best-selling novel in Korea. I hope this film will eventually be made available in America too. (Source: Deaf Village)

It is bad enough that this deaf girl has to spend four hours on buses to get to and from schol. It is worse that she suffers from being bullied, AND because of the distance, is not able to take advantage of after-school tutoring that would enable her to pass classes. She wants to transfer to a closer high school, but the school district will not provide an interpreter at that school because they centralize services for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Day 2 is in the books and we’re smack dab in the middle of day 3. Tuesday Caden was the only munchkin to go to school. I drop him off in the front of school and pick him back up there. He gets out of the car and walks in with that huge backpack hanging on him and doesn’t look back. When he got in the car I asked him 380 questions about his day. Sometimes I can’t get him to shut up, but when I’m asking him about school it’s like pulling teeth. I asked him what he did in his class, how was PE, did he make any friends, did he talk to anyone, did he get to sit with all the other kids at lunch, etc. This is what I got out of him...he didn’t talk to anyone, there wasn’t anything he liked better than others, everything was good, he couldn’t think of anything he didn’t like, and ...

I put EK down sometimes, but for the most part Jeb does night time duty. I get them up, get them ready, and take care of them all day...then 6 o’clock comes and Jeb swoops in and is my SuperHero Husband Helper. I love that moment when he walks through the door. After I finish this post I’m going to pin a few birthday ideas to pinterest. Right now I have a wee bit of a wishlist going for me...MacBook Air, a couple of necklaces, some clothes, crazy expensive boots that I’ve swooned over fo...

He starts kindergarten next Monday. Have I mentioned that? Right now, he’s into legos, Wii Sports, drawing, and watching TV. We haven’t had cable in a while, so that might change once we get new shows to watch. He’s limited to what we’ve bought on itunes and what netflix decides to make instant. He will still take the occasional nap, which I am so so so thankful for. He is pretty independent at this point. He can do almost everything for himself. One phrase he loves to use that...

An elderly man had a serious hearing problem for many years. He went to the doctor and was fitted with this new high-tech hearing aid that allowed him to hear 100% again. He came back to the [...] (Source: Deaf Village)

Invisible Awareness Week is September 12th – 18th this year. I love the theme of this year’s promotion. How often do we take a DEEP BREATH and START FRESH? Perhaps the better question is how often do we NEED to do these two thing? Invisible illness or disability definitely takes adjustment.
In Britain, researchers have discovered that a mandrill monkey had invented a unique sign that meant "leave me alone," and apparently passed it on to the other monkeys. The sign is the simple covering of the eyes. We have known for a long time that young deaf children will invent their own homemade signs in an effort to communicate. What is significant about this discovery, is that it is the first indication of sign language having "cultural roots" in a monkey community.
A teenage boy writes on the forum that he has had severe ear infections for years, and now is hard of hearing. Although health professionals tell him his hearing is okay, he is struggling with things like hearing in background noise. He is already using sign language, but his mother refuses to learn it. He wants to know how to manage his hearing loss. (Source: Deaf Village)

That is happening now in Sri Lanka, where the deaf Sri Lankans marched to demand more sign language interpreters. More interpreters would mean better access to jobs and education in Sri Lanka.
Last week I attended the Health and Wellness Expo for PIMCO employees in Newport Beach on behalf of Shohet Ear Associates Medical Group. It was a wonderful opportunity to speak to individuals in the community who had questions about ears and hearing for themselves or family members. I have always said that the ear is an organ that we do not necessarily pay much attention to nor appreciate - until there is something wrong. I hope that I was able to provide valuable information. Shohet Ear Associates will be participating in more of these types of expos in our community. Here are some photos that were taken at the event. (Source: Deaf Village)

On the show "Switched at Birth," the character of Daphne, the deaf girl, thinks that her father left her family because of her deafness. That got me to wondering, how common is this? Is it normal for deaf children with divorced hearing parents, to think that their deafness is the cause of the parental split? How often is it true that deafness was indeed the cause of a marriage failure? (Source: Deaf Village)

When is it people with hearing loss's turn to serve the country?

In 483 B.C., Medo-Persian King Xerxes (also known as Ahasuerus) threw a huge, 7 day party. What was strange about this party is that it FOLLOWED a 180 day, kingdom-wide celebration. I mean… who has THAT kind of money?
I've come to the realization that I'm too open, especially here on this blog. I forget that there are other people besides my family and close friends reading this, so I pour out my heart too freely. Even some of my friends would probably prefer I wasn't so open. A few people I know have quietly slipped away, scared off by my overly expressive nature. Plus, sometimes I write about things that are "icky." Reading about a child struggling with multiple disabilities isn't exactly uplifting.

What can I say? Once a drama queen, always a drama queen.

Being open is how I connect with people. I want to hear their stories, so I over-share mine. I want to help them with their problems, so I tell them all about mine. By being honest, I hope to help others who are struggling, especially other parent...

•	The stomach virus is long gone from our house. Praise the Lord! JL is also doing wonderful! He’s completely over his tonsillectomy. Somehow all 3 kids have summer colds right now though. •	Jeb and I went to the U2 concert in Nashville. It was incredible. Best 2 hours of entertainment I’ve ever seen. For some reason we only took Jeb’s phone with us, we didn’t charge it before we left, and it died about 30 seconds after U2 came out. Sad story. We have 3 pictures of them. Oh well. I guess we’ll have to go to another one so we can get better pictures. :)	•	We went to Disney for 4th of July week. It was the hardest Disney trip we’ve ever taken. Don’t get me wrong, still so fun...but SO tiring. EK wanted to walk all over the park and do her own thing. Caden wanted to ride ...

Here are some comments from people stating how LACE has changed their lives.
After the Berkeley Low Vision Clinic appointment, we spent several days with the Denizons of Chaos (I'll write more about that next time), then drove to Palo Alto for an audiology appointment. Queen Teen was resigned to it, and happily distracted by three energetic girls, one loud boy and a giant house to explore. Once we reached our hotel room in Mountain View, her mood quickly changed. The sparkle in her eyes vanished, replaced by a nervous scowl. The hotel was nice (thank you Hotels.com) and we had cable TV, something we don't get at home, but nothing could negate the misery she felt thinking about the next day: audiology.

Of all the appointments she has, from neurology to dentistry to genetics to orthopedics, audiology is the worst. She likes the doctor fine, but the tedium of the tes...

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of using a sign language interpreter instead of a communication access realtime translation (CART) service provider? Have you experienced both of them? one is not better than the other; in my personal experience, it depends on the situation which is better. (Deaf/hard of hearing people who are oral communicators may not have experienced both.) Discuss the pros and cons of interpreting versus CART. (Source: Deaf Village)

Just published, a new submission on sudden hearing loss. The writer suddenly lost his hearing after watching television cartoons with his child. He went immediately to his doctor, but didn't get referred to a specialist until three weeks later. The specialist told him it was too late, he should have been treated within the first three days. Now he will be permanently deaf. Sure sounds like a malpractice lawsuit waiting to happen. (Source: Deaf Village)

After reading the article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal about how low Medicaid reimbursements forced the only hospital left in the state doing cochlear implants, to stop doing cochlear implants, I was wondering if similar things are happening with other cochlear implant programs? According to the newspaper article, the hospital had been losing a lot of money on implants and since it could not afford to do them for Medicaid patients, they had to stop doing implants altogether. The end result is that deaf children in Nevada can not get cochlear implants done in Nevada. (Source: Deaf Village)
