VBAC — or Not VBAC?

It used to be the norm, that once you had a Caesarian section, you always had to have one. Not any more. However, opinions differ greatly when it comes to VBAC decision. VBAC is now considered a safe option for most women expecting twins, moms who have had two prior c-sections with a transverse incision, and even for those with an unknown incision type. Recovery for VBAC is usually faster which means a shorter stay in the hospital. This is a decision for you and your doctor together. If you feel you want to try, about 80 % of VABCs are successful. If you like the odds, then go for it, if you choose to have another section, remember its only important that the baby arrive safely. Read more here from Heidi Murkoff of Whattoexpect.com .

ObamaCare Supporters Are Over-Interpreting Oregon Medicaid Study

By Michael F. CannonColumbia Business School economist Ray Fisman has a piece at Slate.com discussing the first-year results of the Oregon Health Insurance Experiment. In brief, when Oregon transferred an average of $3,000 from taxpayers to poor people in the form of Medicaid coverage, it did those poor people some good.
Fisman’s interpretation of the results is different from mine in mainly two respects. First, I describe the one-year benefits of Medicaid coverage as modest; he says they’re “enormous.”
A more fundamental difference concerns whether expanding Medicaid was a cost-effective use of the taxpayers’ money. Fisman writes:
Given the added expense, did the Medicaid expansion prove to be cost-effective? That is, did the treatment group actually...

Oregon Health Insurance Experiment: No Vindication of ObamaCare

By Michael F. CannonThe Oregon Health Insurance Experiment is the first experiment since the dawn of time that randomly assigns some households to receive health insurance (Medicaid) for purposes of comparing their medical consumption, health outcomes, and financial security to similar households that do not receive Medicaid coverage. Some of the nation’s top health economists have released the first batch of results from the OHIE.
At National Review (Online), I summarize the OHIE’s first-year results and offer the following analysis:
Supporters of President Obama’s health-care law may tout these benefits, but the OHIE does not provide the vindication they seek. First, despite being eligible for Medicaid, 13 percent of the control group had private health insurance — s...

Heidi Montag on MTV's "The Hills" (photo: WENN.com)
I will admit I am reality TV show junkie. As I type this, I’m watching an episode of MTV’s “True Life” while anxiously awaiting the season finale of Bravo’s “Kell on Earth.” Due to my obsession with – er, interest in – this influential genre, I keep up with the happenings of its stars (purely for research purposes, of course).
After making a tiny ripple in the reality TV pond with her appearance on MTV’s “Laguna Beach,” Heidi Montag moved on to “The Hills.” And while The Montag’s fame has waxed and waned, she has found inventive ways to keep her irrelevance surprisingly relevant.
