Some of you may remember the post from a few days ago where a guy asked me to fix his inhaler / aerochamber. Well, tonight I finally filled in all the holes.
He came back in...as angry as every. I asked him what the problem was and his exact response was precious: "I asked you what I'd need to do if I get this inhaler home and it didn't work and you SWORE UP AND DOWN IT WOULD. Well guess what -- the motherf.er don't work. Ya'll are selling defective shit in here, and I've done spent like $80 bucks on these sumbitches and you, yeah, you...right here [pointing at me as if I were the master of all things Ventolin HFA]...are gonna give me my money back....plus some, find out whose got one of these Gaht DAMN things that work, and transfer this prescription there."
Can you hear a big bellied red...

I’d heard about “Hospice help” but never knew much about it until my mother-in-law was in a coma before her death. The nurse in charge of Mum’s care at the hospital introduced us to the Hospice representative. From there we learned how much help they could be in a family member’s final days.

They helped us make arrangements.
They cared for Mum so she could return to the nursing home for her last few days.
They were there to comfort the family and answer questions.
They also were available to offer help after Mum’s death.

Recently I learned that:
AGIS.com has partnered with the Hospice Foundation of America (HFA) to offer expert advice and information on end-of-life issues for caregivers. This new addition to the AGIS eldercare portal showcase...

The New Diagnostic Criteria

There seems to be a renewed trend from people who either want autism to be cured or who want to emphasize how awful autism is (sometimes to win the “I have it worse than you” argument). They want to redefine autistic disorder and Asperger’s.
So, you see, there’s something that is missing in the current criteria, something that distinguishes autism and Asperger’s, according to them. No, it isn’t the different spatial abilities that some researchers hypothesize are the difference. Nor is it the presence or absence of a speech delay early in life, as others suggest. No, it’s much simipler.
Autistics are people who agree with me and I believe have autism.
Aspies are people who disagree with me and whom I don’t believe have autism.
(of course you ...

Higher than Mountains or Lower than Valleys?

Are you “somewhere on the autistic spectrum” (NOT the “autism line going from higher to lower” or such)?
If so, I’m going to say this plainly.
Don’t tell me you’re high functioning. Don’t try to distinguish yourself from “those” people. You might find out you have more in common with those you label as “low functioning” than you think. There are tons of intelligent, funny, creative, etc, people who are “those” people. There are plenty of “those” people who want more out of life, and know exactly what the deal is that they have received in life.
Not only that, but don’t tell me you’re low functioning. This isn’t a game, and no points can be scored by proving that you are “...

Yet Another Challenge…

Okay, I know I won’t get any takers on this either - seems that much of the crowd who wants to dismiss adult autistic opinions doesn’t actually want to back up their statements.
But, anyhow, here’s the challenge…find any scientific study of autism that uses any of the following criteria to differentiate between “Autistic Disorder” and “Asperger’s Syndrome”:
1) Autistic people don’t want to be autistic, while Aspies might like to be Aspies. In other words, anyone who is capable of saying they don’t want to be cured is not autistic.
2) Autistic people need 24/7 support, Aspies do not.
3) Autistic people are disabled, Aspies are not
4) Autistic people do not speak, type, or otherwise communicate; Aspies do
5) Autistic people mu...

Success is allowed, unless you’re autistic…

It seems that people are usually allowed to be successful - unless they are autistic.
An autistic who is successful in employment or even life in general is often seen as “high functioning”, “mildly affected”, or whatever else. He isn’t a “real” autistic, however! No, he’s something else. He’s an exception. He’s not like my kid. These are the usual responses.
I’m fairly successful - I work a great job, that I think many neurotypicals would love to be able to have (I take on average two months off every year, telecommute twice a week, often set my own goals, I make a good salary, etc). Well, at least I’m successful with employment.
Of course most people that know about me on a professional level don’t know how I l...

photo credit-Winery FineryLiz related this story to me this morning, while I was getting ready for work.Yesterday morning, after dropping Buddy Boy off at school, she stopped at a gas station and purchased a diet root beer to drink. Sweet Pea was still in the car. Liz didn't notice that the drink was nearly frozen, and when she opened it it sprayed all over the inside of the car, as well as all over her.Fortunately she was near home, and returned there to change her clothes (and finish cleaning the car). After telling Sweet Pea she had to change her clothes, Sweet Pea said"Don't take off your breasts.""What?", Liz asked.Sweet Pea repeated it."Did you mean my bra, sweetie, or my breasts?""Don't take off your breasts." Liz wonders, is there someone at school whose mom has breast cancer, and ...
