Our public call for policymakers to demonstrate leadership on spending cuts comes in the midst of the on-going battle on Capitol Hill over funding the government for the remainder of fiscal 2011.
A graphic at the top of the ad measures the $61 billion in cuts that Republicans have proposed against fiscal 2011 estimates for total spending, the deficit, and interest on the debt. As the graphic shows and the ad notes, it is clear that “leaders and members of both parties are in deep denial about the fiscal emergency we face.”
There are news reports that Republican and Democrat negotiators ar...

I’ve been thinking a lot about the subconscious mind and how it manifests itself in our life. Nearly all goals that are successfully achieved start as an idea, and with positive vibes, eventually turn into reality. As personal development seekers, it’s up to us to train our minds for success. I looked around for a long time before I finally found something that does just that.
It’s called autosuggestion, and I learned about it in Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich. Autosuggestion is just a way of influencing your own subconscious. We unconsciously program our selves in this way, day in and day out. You can actually learn to take control of this process and get some pretty powerful results.

By Roger PilonToday POLITICO Arena asks:
Is the Obama budget a serious stab at deficit reduction? And do congressional Republicans have any credibility in knocking the budget plan since, other than Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), they have not detailed many cuts that would seriously slice the deficit?
My response:
It's Valentine's Day and love is in the air, especially on Capitol Hill where Congress anxiously awaits the 10:00 a.m. arrival of the president's FY 2012 budget. It should be well shredded by noon.
And as it is, across the land we'll be hearing the cries of "Not me, please, not my sinecure" -- no more plaintively than from the minions of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. 1. Progress in developing synthetic red blood cells
A University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill research group has created hydrogel particles that mimic the size, shape and flexibility of red blood cells (RBCs). The researchers used PRINT® (Particle Replication in Non-wetting Templates) technology to generate the fake RBCs, which are said to have a relatively long half-life. The findings were reported on-line yesterday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) (abstract available, subscription required for full text).
By Tad DeHavenThe Washington Times says that the upcoming farm bill re-write could “sow division in the GOP.” While House Republican leaders John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and Kevin McCarthy voted against the 2008 farm bill, the new chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, Frank Lucas (R-Okla.), is a dedicated supporter of farm subsidies.
The Times recalls Boehner’s comments on the 2008 farm bill:
“The farm bill has often been abused by politicians as a slush fund for bizarre earmarks and wasteful spending projects, and the latest version … is no different,” Mr. Boehner, then the GOP minority leader, said at the time.
It’s too bad then that the Boehner-friendly Republican Steering Committee, which decided the committee chairs, didn’t appear to blink at handing the agric...

Two common question among many tubal ligation patients are "Can my tubes become untied?" and "Can my tubes grow back together?". The tubal surgery specialists of Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center answer these common questions in a brief and easy to understand format. (Source: Tubal Reversal Blog)

By Walter OlsonEconomists can actually measure the value of insider connections:
[L]obbyists connected to US Senators suffer an average 24% drop in generated revenue when their previous employer leaves the Senate. The decrease in revenue is out of line with pre-existing trends, it is discontinuous around the period in which the connected Senator exits Congress and it persists in the long-term. … Measured in terms of median revenues per ex-staffer turned lobbyist, this estimate indicates that the exit of a Senator leads to approximately a $177,000 per year fall in revenues for each affiliated lobbyist.
The fall is steeper, the researchers find, when the departing member of Congress sat on a powerful committee such as Appropriations, Senate Finance, or (on the House side) Ways and Mea...

Researchers at Children’s Hospital in Boston and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have developed an iPhone application that keeps you up-to-date with drug safety reports and allows you to submit any side effects directly to the FDA.
The app, called MedWatcher can keep a list of medications for which you receive both official FDA alerts and news from other channels. Users can report side effects straight from the app and view other submitted reports. The researchers hope to lower the barrier to reporting side effects, increasing the participation in safety surveillance.
Reports of serious adverse events are reviewed by members of the Children’s Computational Epidemiology Group and then submitted to the FDA. The app was developed using technology from the Outbreaks...

ADHD: Fact Or Fiction? Join Me On Capitol Hill

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is probably overdiagnosed by physicians. In the lay public, the term is often used jokingly to describe the common feeling of distraction we experience in a world filled with interruptions. With a constant stream of text messages, Facebook updates, TV commercials, and fast-paced Twittering, there’s little wonder that we all feel frazzled at times.
But the occasional experience of jangled nerves is not a proper basis for a diagnosis of ADHD. Unfortunately, there has been great confusion between the actual disorder, and its misuse as a label for simply feeling distracted.
So to help set the record straight and to tease out fact from fiction, I’ll be attending a forum on Capitol Hill with my co-bloggers Dr. Kevin Pho and Dr. Rob Lamb...

Straight from AHRQ….
This week HHS announced final rules to help improve Americans’ health, increase safety and reduce health care costs through expanded use of electronic health records (EHR). The announcement marks the completion of multiple steps laying the groundwork for the incentive payments program. One of the two regulations announced today defines the “meaningful use” objectives that providers must meet to qualify for the bonus payments, and the other regulation identifies the technical capabilities required for certified EHR technology.
Finally men everywhere might have a birth control option that won’t rob them of the joys of living.
Scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill may have discovered a cheap, convenient and noninvasive method of male birth control — ultrasound. The scientists believe that a single treatment can provide up to six months of infertility that is reversible.
The team has received a $100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for their work. If the project pans out, this could have an incredible impact on global health. (more…)

By Michael F. CannonFrom the invaluable Tim Carney:
The Obama team regularly dismisses opponents as industry lackeys. The Democratic National Committee blasted out e-mails this week warning that “for every member of Congress, there are eight anti-reform lobbyists swarming Capitol Hill” and “Congress is under attack from insurance lobbyists.”
But drug industry lobbyists, according to Politico, spent the weekend “huddled with Democratic staffers” who needed the drug lobby to “sign off” on proposals before moving ahead. Meanwhile, we learn that the drug lobby is buying millions of dollars of ads in 43 districts where a Democratic candidate stands to suffer for supporting the bill. The doctors’ lobby and the hospitals’ lobby are also ...

That’s according to a new analysis that shows there was an association between the Merck drug and cardiovascular risk as early as December 2000. Vioxx, you may recall, was withdrawn in September 2004, after mounting debate about heart risks linked to the painkiller. The analysis appears in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
The researchers reviewed 30 randomized, placebo-controlled trials that enrolled a combined 20,152 individuals, lasted from four weeks to four years and assigned a range of 17 to 2,586 participants to take 12.5 milligrams to 50 milligrams of Vioxx. As of December 2000, 21 of these trials, or 70 percent, had been completed and the risk of a cardiovascular event or death was greater among subjects assigned to Vioxx, according to the analysis.
Data subsequently collec...

We went to a concert Friday night in Chapel Hill that featured three harpsichords! The program included music by Bach and a local composer named Edwin McLean. I really enjoyed McLean’s music, and will be looking for a CD.

One of the performers, Elaine Funaro, played her new harpsichord (Opus 333). The instrument was built by Richard Kingston. The harpsichord was painted by Durham artist Lisa Creed.

Once upon a time there was a damsel in distress crying for help at the top of a tower. Down below was a fierce and fiery dragon. Away on a not-too-distant hill was a knight in shining armor on a white horse. As the damsel cried to the knight saying, “Please save me!” the knight looked at the dragon and then at the damsel. Then again he looked at the dragon and at the damsel. Abruptly the knight started to suck his thumb and cried out loud saying, “Mommy, Mommy, I’m scared!” The damsel could not believe her eyes. She quickly assessed her options and came to the conclusion that the knight was not going to save her. Immediately, like a bolt of lightning, she jumped out of the window dropping down below and almost breaking her legs. She then ran to the knight and pulled his sword out...

Jen M. talks about her Essure sterilization reversal. She writes, “I had already tried contacting doctors in my area, however, the answer always was the same – ‘You cannot reverse Essure’, or (my personal favorite), ‘The only way to remove the coils is with a hysterectomy’. When I talked to the staff at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, I knew this was the right place. Contrary to what most people say, my tubes were not short; in fact there were 9 cm on both sides. Thank you, Dr. Berger, for giving us a second chance to have a baby.” (Source: Tubal Reversal Blog)

In order not to loose my daily structure I have been working all weeks this summer. While people were away the silence of my office was wonderful. It's good to see all those people in the office again however. Some ups and downs came upon my way, running up 'that' hill again took some time, but we made it again.Lots of festivities to celebrate, this summer is ok.If you might be anxious about my weight: I have never been fatter in my whole life. Actually I was a little proud when I reached my first kilogramme that is just above the BMI standard. That made my day. I finally felt like all the other woman.Just amazing afer having been skinny for over 38 years.Hope you are doing ok, your comments are very positive, thank you!TTYL (Source: The Art of Being Asperger Woman)

Here is the message members of Congress should send to Ben Bernanke during the Fed chief’s annual Capitol Hill testimony this week: He is fighting for his job. With his term up in January of next year, Bernanke needs to be called to account for the Fed’s many questionable actions during the financial turmoil of the past year.
Even while correctly identifying the “global savings glut,” Bernanke sat by and did nothing about the unsustainable build-up of leverage in the housing market—the “bubble” which famously burst in late 2008. Bernanke also used Fed financing to bail out Bear Stearns and AIG—hotly political moves which should rightfully have been left to Congress—and oversaw the massive expansion of the Fed’s balance sheet from about $900 billion to over $2 trillion. ...

President Obama’s new drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, says he wants to banish the idea of a “war on drugs” because the federal government should not be “at war with the people of this country.”
At a Cato policy briefing on Capitol Hill on July 7, former Libertarian Party presidential candidate Bob Barr explained why carrying out an end to the “war on drugs” will require a bipartisan solution. (Source: Cato-at-liberty)

There are lots of reasons Washington should not bail out the automakers. Whatever the justification for saving financial institutions — the “lifeblood” of the economy, etc., etc. — saving selected industrial enterprises is lemon socialism at its worst. The idea that the federal government will be able to engineer an economic turnaround is, well, the sort of economic fantasy that unfortunately dominates Capitol Hill these days.
One obvious problem is that legislators now have a great excuse to micromanage the automakers. And they have already started. After all, if the taxpayers are providing subsidies, don’t they deserve to have dealerships, lots of dealerships, just down the street? That’s what our Congresscritters seem to think.

There are many different types of genetic abnormalities. The most common is chromosomal (DNA) trisomy.
Trisomy means there are three copies of any one of our 23 chromosomes. Normally, we have two copies of each. Humans have 23 different chromosomes and each chromosome has a duplicate, or back up copy, giving [...] (Source: Tubal Reversal Blog)

Obama’s new drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, says it is time to move away from the “war” rhetoric surrounding federal drug policy. Since Kerlikowske has just assumed office, this is exactly the right thing to do — set a whole new tone from the militarized approach we have seen over the past 20-30 years.
Drug abuse is a problem that must be dealt with, but we don’t need to send troops to Latin America, we don’t need former generals like Barry McCaffrey to oversee drug policy, and we don’t need police officers conducting raids on American homes with machine guns and flash bang grenades.
The political climate on drug policy is shifting. Republican governors like Arnold Schwarzenegger are calling for a...

This morning in The Wall Street Journal:
The Obama administration’s new drug czar says he wants to banish the idea that the U.S. is fighting “a war on drugs,” a move that would underscore a shift favoring treatment over incarceration in trying to reduce illicit drug use.
…Gil Kerlikowske, the new White House drug czar, signaled Wednesday his openness to rethinking the government’s approach to fighting drug use.
Mr. Kerlikowske’s comments are a signal that the Obama administration is set to follow a more moderate — and likely more controversial — stance on the nation’s drug problems.
…The Obama administration is likely to deal with drugs as a matter of public health rather than criminal justice alone, with treatment’s role gr...

Congress is off on another crusade, to save Americans from credit cards. People get into debt, run up big fees, generally feel abused, and complain to their elected officials. Never mind the obvious convenience, which is why credit cards have become an indispensable part of American commerce. Legislators plan on micro-managing the credit terms which may be offered across America.
Reports the New York Times:
“We like credit cards — they are valuable vehicles for many people,” said Senator Christopher J. Dodd, Democrat of Connecticut, the chairman of the Senate banking committee and author of the measure now being considered by the Senate. “It’s when these vehicles are being abused by the card issuers at the expense of the consumers that we must step in and change the rules....

Cato scholars have long made arguments in defense of tax havens. In The Wall Street Journal, Senior Fellow Richard Rahn outlined the policy the federal government should be taking instead:
The correct policy for the United States to follow is to reduce its corporate tax rate to make it internationally competitive, and to move toward a tax system that does not punish savings and productive investment so severely. We know from the experiences of many countries that reducing tax rates and simplifying th...

The tubal reversal doctors at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center perform tubal surgery as an alternative to in vitro fertilization (IVF) for treating infertility as well as for reversing sterilization. The advantages of tubal surgery compared with IVF are its higher pregnancy rate, lower cost, and the ability to become pregnant naturally and more than one time if so desired.
Dorinda, a 27 year-old tubal reversal patient from Rock Hill S.C., was able to afford reversal of tubal ligation because of the generosity of her dying father. This blog describes the concerns of the Tubal Ligation Reversal Doctors at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center as they review her operative report and have fears about Dorinda having unrepairable fallopian tubes. Putting her trust in God's hands, Dorinda's blocked tubes were able to be repaired successfully. (Source: Tubal Reversal Blog)

The techniques of tubal reversal surgery that Dr. Berger and Dr. Monteith perform every day are the same techniques used to repair blocked tubes due to tubal disease. Although our practice name (Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center) and website (www.tubal-reversal.net) clearly indicate our primary interest, many women with blocked tubes caused by tubal disease, rather than surgical sterilization, find their way here for help in correcting their tubal blockage and becoming able to have children.
