It’s common knowledge that creatives can be eccentric. We’ve seen this throughout history. Even Plato and Aristotle observed odd behaviors among playwrights and poets, writes Harvard University researcher Shelley Carson, author of Your Creative Brain: Seven Steps to Maximize Imagination, Productivity and Innovation in Your Life, in the May/June 2011 issue of Scientific American.
She gave several examples of creatives’ strange behaviors:
“Albert Einstein picked up cigarette butts off the street to get tobacco for his pipe; Howard Hughes spent entire days on a chair in the middle of the supposedly germ-free zone of his Beverly Hills Hotel suite; the composer Robert Schumann believed that his musical compositions were dictated to him by Beethoven and other deceased luminaries fro...

By Ilya ShapiroAs the number of events I’ve participated in as a result of my challenge to debate “anyone, anywhere, any time” on the constitutionality of Obamacare approaches 50, I find myself in many interesting situations. This past Tuesday was no exception, as George Mason law professor (and Cato adjunct scholar) Ilya Somin and I took on Yale law professor Akhil Amar and NYU law professor Rick Hills in an Oxford-style parliamentary debate organized by the Amherst College Political Union.
This event had a number of interesting subplots: Somin and I have held an annual “Battle of the Ilyas” but now appear on the same stage arguing from the same position; Amar wrote a scathing oped attacking Judge Roger Vinson’s decision in the Florida Obamacare case to...

Pete Combs received his cooking training at the Culinary Institue of America and is the Executive Chef at the University of Kentucky/Chandler Medical Center. We recently met with him to get his thoughts on hospital food and other items.
Where are you from?
I was born in Pt. Pleasant, New Jersey. My parents then moved to Skaneatlas, New York. They were originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Where did you go to college and what was your academic major?
I went to Purdue University and graduated with Bachelor of Science in Restaurant and Hotel Management and a minor in accounting.
I then went to The Culinary Institute of America. I went there to further my cooking skills that had started at the age of 13 in a country Ccub kitchen. My friend’s Dad owned it and gave me an opportunit...

What’s the most fun you can have on your birthday? A big party with friends? Quiet dinner with a few friends? For Brody Jenner, it was having surgery. (Of course, I don’t know how fun it was!)

Jenner had his appendix removed on the morning of his 26th birthday. The devastatingly gorgeous actor has a regular role on the Hills. He’s also the son of Olympian (and step-dad to Kim Kardashian) and songwriter Linda Thompson.
A full and speedy recovery is expected.

I’m 40 years old and while I’m not the workaholic of many people I’ve met in my life, I’d say that I do spend a lot more time working than most. Even when you run your own business — in fact, maybe primarily when you run your own small business — you work more than a typical person who works 8 to 5 or 9 to 6 or whatever. The problem with running your own business is that work time and non-work time meld into one. There’s no delineation. And while that’s great for Psych Central, it certainly may not be ideal for my own mental health (not to mention physical health).
My troubles pale in comparison to many people’s troubles today, especially in this economy. But I keep thinking back to my times in the countryside of Ireland, of France, and...

It’s been a tiring couple of days. Visiting family is always like that, non-stop being on.
One of the things that makes it difficult is that the family is fractured up and all over the city. The best approach is to try to get a dinner going and see as many people as I can that way. Tomorrow night it will be my dad’s place. Plus he remarried and as kids so there’s another splinter of relatives to visit.
But alas, today is Easter, and some poor sucker got nailed. Just using that term makes me a little jealous if you know what I mean. It’s been while.
Today is the gathering for my grandmother. She doesn’t know I’m in town, at least I don’T think so. “She might have known, but I think she has forgotten.” my sister said to me in the car yest...

I’ve been following the trial of Hans Reiser, the software engineer who developed code for the Linux operating system and who, in April, was convicted of first-degree murder in the 2006 disappearance of his ex-wife, Nina Reiser. The case has been troubling to me on a few levels: They lived in the Oakland Hills — a place I’m familiar with — and where, six days after she disappeared, Nina Reiser’s minivan was found containing her purse and $144 in rotting groceries. Yesterday, Hans Reiser led police to what he said was the body of Nina Reiser, buried in a park in the Oakland Hills; according to the July 7th SFGate, he “agreed to reveal the location of her body in exchange for a deal in which he would be sentenced for second-degree murder rather than the fi...
