What’s the reason behind this shift in treatment choice away from prescription drugs? Many more parents are becoming aware each day of the dangers of using drugs to treat their ADHD child.
Switching to ADHD natural supplements rather than using ADHD drugs is a better treatment option for various reasons, mainly the potential for dangerous side effects as well as the unknown potential for long-term effects.
The fear of side effects such as psychiatric disorders, cardiovascular problems, and risk of drug abuse gave rise to the advent of ADHD natural supplements. There are a lot of medical experts and parents who prefer to use the natural treatment of ADHD in children. This is very much justified as ADHD natural supplements are much safer than prescription medication, and they are extre...

Obsession with Senate “Holds” Is Misguided

By Mark A. CalabriaWith the start of the 112th Congress, Senate Democrats have offered a set of rule changes, most of which are geared toward the filibuster. Some of these changes, such as guaranteeing the minority at least three amendments, make a great deal of sense. I’ve long thought that the practice of the Majority Leader (of any party) “filling the amendment tree” did not make for good legislating. And I say that, recalling as a former Senate staffer, the practice made my life easier on numerous occasions.
One part of the package, however, that of ending “secret” holds strikes me as rather uninformed as to actual Senate practice. First let’s recall that a “hold’ is essentially a method for Senators to tell the Majority Leader th...

By Mark A. CalabriaRecent weeks have witnessed considerable media attention on a fairly obscure Senate practice: that of Senators placing a “hold” on a nomination. Holds are essentially a method for Senators to tell the Majority Leader that if the Leader were to try to move a nomination by unanimous consent, that Senator would object on the Senate floor.
Much of the attention has unsurprisingly come from Democrats, who see the use of holds as obstructing President Obama’s ability to get in place his preferred personnel. Perhaps getting the most attention was Senator Richard Shelby’s placing a hold on 70 some nominations (full disclosure: I spent seven years working for Shelby).
What is missed in the debate over holds is whether the Senate should be moving nomi...

Last week I welcomed readers to Spring and then it promptly snowed (just a little) up here in New England. True to April, however, it’s now raining and warmer, and this is one of those cloudy Fridays that seems like it just goes on and on forever.

Changes and Illusions
We all go through transitions in our lives, and some are more painful than others. But transition teaches us valuable lessons, too, if we’re open to listening for them. Life is short, fleeting, and we all comfort ourselves in a world made of partial illusion. Without such illusion, however, life may be unmanageable for many.

From Panic to Peak Performance - Possible?

If you find yourself overwhelmed with workloads, venting about demanding colleagues, or panicked through financial pressures … you’ll be interested in new research that links panic to heart trouble down the road. Your own brain actually holds answers that could turn panic into peak performances.Determination is not enough to eliminate panic ... nor is venting, though. For some time, researchers warned us that persistent panic can lead you into places of depression… and now heart attacks and stokes have been added to panic dangers. One study of 3000 participants just published in Archives of General Psychiatry reported that rapid pulse and shortness of breath that comes with panic attacks – may even signal heart trouble at a later date. Luckily, the human brai...
