Starting your own small business can seem like a daunting task at first. This is why many people never attempt it. However, if you break up your duties into smaller tasks, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, if you follow these steps to starting a small business you may find that you’re a profitable entrepreneur in no time.

Have you considered a home business so you can afford to stay home to care for your Alzheimer’s family member? Perhaps you already have one. Are you knowledgeable about home business taxes?
Jean Murray, at Small Business Boomers, has a great post with information and resources concerning what the IRS (Internal Revenue Service in the US) considers a true business. You might like to check out her, Boomers Retiring to “Fun” Businesses: Is birdwatching a business?
She mentions some of the criteria the IRS uses to determine whether you’re entitled to deduct your losses from the business you’re operating or starting up.

In the post, For Alzheimer’s Caregivers Considering an At-Home or eBay Income, I mention Suzanne Wells and her new blog at b5media, eShopOwner.com.
Suzanne has offered some additional insights for Alzheimer’s Notes’ readers:
eBay is becoming more and more popular for the “sandwich” generation who are looking for additional means to bring extra income into the home, whether to save for retirement or to care for a parent or spouse.
eBay works great for caregivers or the homebound because sellers can interact with their customers and this helps with the isolation factor, and it gives the caregiver another focus, a hobby, and something fun to do to combat “caregiver’s syndrome.”
Whether the caregiver develops an e-busine...

Your Alzheimer’s parent or spouse requires more and more care, so you find it difficult to juggle caregiving and your job. Or you simply need extra income to pay the additional bills caregiving entails.
If you’re considering online or eBay businesses, check out the helpful information at the new blog at b5media’s Business Channel, eShopOwner.com, by Suzanne Wells.
Suzanne has a number of posts concerning the in’s and out’s about setting up an eBay store. She does this in the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) format.
For instance, in FAQ#1, Suzanne discusses, What Should I Sell?, and differentiates between the hobby and serious eBay business owner. She also touches upon her experience as an eBay business owner.
Keep tuned to eShopOwner...

In today’s world, lead in toys and other items has become a major concern. Recalls have been issued on many products.
So…consider whether any of the items you use for Alzheimer’s patients…clothing, toys, etc. have the possibility of containing lead and would be of danger to them. (Often they put items in their mouths as children do.)
The “Apprentice” type contest at the b5 Business Channel (now in its second week) addresses the topic of possible lead in novelty buttons used on chef’s aprons and hats for children that our prototype business owner, Kay, sells.
Checking out and following this contest will provide some diversion from your caretaking duties. This week’s challenge may give you an idea of what business owners now are f...

You might wonder how this contest applies to Alzheimer’s. There are Alzheimer’s caregivers who write and speak about this disease. Do you have thoughts of going on the speaking circuit? Do you want to teach writing workshops, as well as increase sales of your books?
Do you produce products that aid in caring for the Alzheimer’s patient? These can range from items that aid with care. Or they could be dolls and stuffed toys that provide comfort for the patient. Do you provide clothing that makes it easier for dressing the patient?
If you’ve ventured into one of these areas and could use advice on creating momentum and more income in your business, the Jump Start Your Business contest at b5media’s Business Channel might just be the place to start ...

I asked Laura Spencer, of Writing Thoughts, to write a guest post at Home Biz Notes about The Home Business Juggling Game while caring for her dad with Alzheimer’s.
Laura relates there some of the background about caring for her father, then gives tips that Alzheimer’s caregivers and home business owners can utilize. Even if you don’t have a home business, but work outside the home, you’ll likely find Laura’s story encouraging.
Also, Laura was a member of the “sandwich generation” while she was doing this, juggling children’s and a family’s schedule along with her business.
After reading Laura’s guest post at Home Biz Notes, you may have some tips of your own to share.
