Mother-daughter relationships come in many different stripes. But all have one thing in common: They involve a complicated bond.
Nothing brings this to light more than the holidays — especially if your relationship has been strained and shaky.
On Mother’s Day, in particular, it can be “hard to figure out a way to honor a mom that has been difficult,” said Linda Mintle, Ph.D, marriage and family therapist and author of I Love My Mother, But…Practical Help to Get the Most Out of Your Relationship. I spoke with Mintle for my article on mother-daughter relationships. (Stay tuned!) And I wanted to share her straightforward and wise advice.
So how do you honor your mother when your relationship is thorny?

Let’s be honest, most Mother’s Day cards are mushy, nauseatingly so. (My...

Today, my heart is full, and I want to honor you. Yes, you. I honor you for your fight to manage diabetes, whether that diabetes afflicts you, someone you love, or people you work with professionally. I honor you, no matter what form of the disease you deal with. I honor you regardless of your treatment plan. I honor you, whether diagnosis came before you can remember or whether it came last week. I honor you, and I don't care whether you feel successful. I honor you whether you're otherwise healthy, whether you struggle every moment with complications, or whether your diabetes management is made more difficult by other conditions. I honor you whether you're gifted with a positive outlook or struggle with depression. I honor you whether you live with confidence or feel trapped ...

Do you know what this weekend is? It’s Glenn Beck’s Restoring Honor Rally, of course! If you forgot, shame on you. You wouldn’t forget Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Jr., or Thomas Jefferson. Glenn Beck shouldn’t be any different.
If you need a reminder of Beck’s bravery and moral strength, just watch the brief (just four and a half minutes!) clip below, promoting the rally. Don’t mind the Goldline logo. Rosa Parks had a great endorsement deal with Cash For Gold, if we’re not mistaken.

Yes, that’s Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Also my long time nemesis. I hate her. She stole my perfectly good name and turned it into a joke. On her About Me page she says, “When you hear the name Elvira only one person comes to mind…”
Excuse me? And what does that make me? Chopped liver?
You might be thinking, “Gee, Elvira, why would it scare you to be associated, even loosely, with a s.ty, Vampira wannabe in a cheap wig?
[Yes. Before Elvira there was Vampira (circa 1953), the first ever late night horror film hostess. She was featured in that wonderfully campy Tim Burton film 'Ed Wood', with Johnny Depp as the cross dressing Mr. Wood.]

Every year the entrants for the Best of the Web awards multiply. In 2009, veterans stood tough as new kids dazzled. It was difficult to narrow the list to just ten (and some more faves we want to mention), but here are our picks for the top blogs written by people who have been diagnosed with a bipolar disorder.

1. The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive
Do’s and Don’ts for the Mentally Interesting was a BBC Radio play based on Seaneen’s blog produced last May and just nominated for a Mind Mental Health Media Award. Always a compelling and honest read, it was no fluke or sympathy vote that caused us to place this blog near the top of our list last year - it deserves many accolades. Well done.
2. The Trouble With Spikol

Make a Diabetes Donation in Honor of Mom

If you’re looking for a great Mother’s Day gift, consider giving money to the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The ADA offers several different types of giving initiatives, including honor gifts, stocks, and accessories. If your mom or someone close to her has diabetes, what better way to show them you care than by giving money toward a cure. It’s better than flowers! (But it’s always a good idea to get them anyway!)

If giving a gift in honor of your mom, don’t forget to write out your reasons for doing so in a card. When your mom is able to understand why it was important for you to do that, she’ll appreciate the gift all the more.

Yesterday the New York Times wrote that the Pentagon “decided that it will not award the Purple Heart, the hallowed medal given to those wounded or killed by enemy action, to war veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder because it is not a physical wound.”
This is an interesting decision on many levels. My first reaction was: How typical. Go ahead and ignore all the research and data collected by psychologists, neuropsychologists and psychiatrists the world over to define and develop diagnostic and treatment protocols for this horrible condition.
On the other hand it is impressive that the Pentagon advisory group took any time to deliberate on this issue. Apparently they did leave the door open to future changes, which sounds like Bush administration code for, “I’...

The atrocities of men and women around the world and the extent of which they commit such never fail to disgust and distress me. Who has to believe in an afterlife of eternal torment and punishment when, here on earth, humans already bring it upon their fellowmen? And the saddest thing is that in most of these crimes, the women receives the greater punishment.
One of those horrific crimes of violence against women is the practice of “honor” killing.
Honor killing is the revengeful murder of a female member of the family, carried out by any or all of the family member themselves, when it’s been perceived that she has brought dishonor upon the family name. Refusing an arranged marriage, falling in love with another man that is not approved upon by the family for marri...

Jessica Alba and Cash Warren welcomed their daughter, Honor Marie Warren, last Saturday just in time to celebrate Celebrity Health Week here at the Health and Wellness Channel. Unfortunately, Alba had told Extra that she was more paranoid about breastfeeding than giving birth!
