One of my greatest scientific heros is A.V.Hill, and its one of my great regrets that I saw him only in the distance. He’s a hero partly because of his science, but also because of his other interests, in particular his efforts to help scientists escape from pre-war Germany. Read the Biographical Memoir of Hill, written by Bernard Katz [download pdf], and comments in my obituary for Katz.

A.V. Hill, c. 1935 (drawn by Edward Halliday in 1978, from a photograph)

There are some amazing pictures from Hill’s photo album here. And you can read an account of a visit to the lab on Boxing Day 1960 written by AV’s grandson, Nicholas Humphrey (his father, John Humphrey, was external examiner ofr my PhD). And Austin Elliott gives some of the scientific backgroun...

Excitement is building as the the post-prandial somnolence evolves into austere reverence as the the Utopian College Council start the protracted process of sobering up in time to announce the inaugural New Years Day Honours list. This year 50 new individuals will be officially recognised as Fellows of the College. (Source: Life in the Fast Lane)

I don't like honors. I appreciate it for the work that I did, and for people who appreciate it, and I notice that other physicists use my work. I don't need anything else. I don't think there's any sense to anything else. I don't see that it makes any point that someone in the Swedish Academy decides that this work is noble enough to receive a prize - Richard Fenyman (Source: Life in the Fast Lane)

Well, it’s not quite in the class of Maundy Gregory but the award of an MBE to Gloria Hawkes has reduced most of us to fits of giggles.The citation for Mrs Hawkes's honour paints a glowing picture of her commitment to her duties as the Speaker's housekeeper and cleaner as well as a cleaner in the Serjeant at Arms' department. It refers to the "unsung importance" of Mrs Hawkes's duties, which she carries out to the "highest quality" and "way and above what might be expected". (source)Well done, Gloria.A quick trawl through the honours reveals nothing for Dr Crippen – again – nor anything for any of Dr Crippen’s friends. How pleased we all were, though, that dear old Professor Christine Beasley has been made a Dame. Remember her? The Chief Nurse and one of the architects of “Produc...

Ok so it isn’t the same night… but at least I’m posting! And I do have excuses - I was tuckered out on Monday night and also had to get my terms requirement for Qualitative Methods in Research in by Tuesday morning - then I had work on Tuesday, then yesterday… well OK I could have posted yesterday. But I had a sore back!
</sympathy>
Anyway, now I’m sitting down to blog for at least a few minutes. I might also try to put together a page about my character in World of Warcraft. It might get me blogging more often anyway and it’s a good chance to practice with page making and seeing what I can do with this blog
At the group session on Monday, we started to make some connections with other people’s blogs - it seems to be the way to get other peo...

I’m playing with categories… it’s so much fun!
I’m in the middle of one of our group sessions and we’re learning more about blogging and using WordPress efficiently - there’s so much to learn, even for an ‘old hand’ like me. I’ve been using computers since I was seven years old, but technology keeps on changing and it’s hard to keep up…
Will blog more later (Source: Set a Man on Fire...)

So I finally jumped on the bandwagon and created a blog…
I don’t kid myself that I have anything particularly witty or interesting to say, this is more like an experiment with a purpose. I’m an Honours student in Occupational Therapy in New Zealand, and my dissertation is going to be based around Web 2.0 tools, including blogs. So I thought I’d better get with the program and actually try to keep a blog. This is quite funny if you know me at all, considering I have tried and failed to keep any kind of diary for any significant length of time many, many, many times.
About the blog title: I’m not a particularly vindictive person - it’s part of a quote from a Terry Pratchett book. You know the old Chinese proverb:
“Give a man a fish and feed him for a...
