At lunch today, I was part of a spirited conversation on the pros and cons of reality TV. Watermelon is an amazing treat, and is packed with citrulline, a compound that relaxes blood vessels – just like the famous blue pills – researchers at the North Carolina State University have found. Who knew spitting seeds could be more than just a redneck contest, but actually excellent forep...

I met a woman this week from New Jersey. She told me that she lived near one of the women on a reality show called Real Housewives of New Jersey. She was a little taken aback when I told her that I had seen the show and thought this woman behaved badly. There is no other way to describe it. There are also spinoff shows about housewives in California, Atlanta, and New York — seems there are plenty of housewives wanting to get on TV.
Recently I caught a bit of an episode about the New York housewives. Although it must be good for ratings, these women also behaved abhorrently — like self-centered bullies. With all the news about girls bullying each other in high school to the point of real injury and even death, I think this kind of behavior from American mothers is truly troubli...

If you’re a fan of the television series Desperate Housewives, you know Kathryn Joosten; she plays neighbor Mrs. McClusky. You may also know of her as Mrs. Landingham, President Bartlett’s no-nonsense secretary in the popular show West Wing.
According to People Magazine, the two-time Emmy winner (for her acting on DH) announced that she is fighting her second battle with lung cancer. She was diagnosed the first time in 2001. Ms Joosten was a heavy smoker until that diagnosis, when she quit smoking.
Lung cancer used to be thought of as a man’s disease and is still often thought of that way. Sadly, the statistics show that as women become equal in many parts of life, this includes a rise in women with lung cancer. According to LungCancer.org:
Overall, lung cancer affects me...

These messages came through my email for the past day. Yes, we do have a sense of humor. Though another’s (like the writers of Desperate Housewives, perhaps?) insecurities should not be on another’s (like the Filipinos, for one?) expense. What follows is a segment of Desperate Housewives Season Premiere:

What the network thought was funny for the show is not at all funny for the subject of their humor line:

Filed under: Chemotherapy, Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Hodgkin's Lymphoma, All Cancers, Television, Thought for the DayI also write for our sister blog, TVSquad. I review Desperate Housewives, when it's not in re-runs. At the end of the most recent season, one of the characters, Lynnette, played by Felicity Huffman, was diagnosed with what could be Hodgkin's Lymphoma or Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Filed under: Celebrity fundraisers, FundraisersEva Longoria took time out her busy acting and wedding-planning schedule to participate in the Spike for Hope charity volleyball tournament, which raises fund for PADRES Contra El Cancer (Parents against Cancer), supporting Latino kids and families that have been affected by cancer. According to Eva, she's not much of a volleyball player, but she couldn't refuse because she's actually the national spokesperson for the organization, whose motto is Yo Soy Esperanza (I am hope). That and she's naturally competitive. I say kudos to her for helping raise some money from a worthy cause.
Filed under: Skin Cancer, Prevention, Thought for the DayIt's May. Summer is upon us. So is the hot sun. What a perfect time for an awareness month.May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. So now is the time to learn a thing or two about a disease that is largely preventable, extremely deadly, and almost 100 percent curable when caught early.Think about this:Someone dies of melanoma -- the deadliest form of skin cancer -- every 65 minutes. Women ages 20-29 are most at risk, with melanoma ranking as the second most common cancer in this age group. But anyone, regardless of skin color or age, can develop skin cancer. More than one million Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year -- shocking considering the cause of the disease is no secret: skin cancer is caused mostly by too much s...
