At the latest NextGen Users Group Meeting in DC, I saw examples everywhere of storytelling par excellence.
Former Speaker Newt Gingrich and Vermont Governor Howard Dean sprinkled stories of constituents and personal experiences throughout their keynote addresses, as they made their respective (and mostly complementary) points on the healthcare reform debate.
The first day’s keynote speakers, Gene Kranz of Mission Control and Commander Jim Lowell from Apollo 13, were all about storytelling. 99% of their stage time was a recounting of details of raw ingenuity and failure truly not being an option — and 45 minutes into the session, folks were still attentive enough to laugh and groan in all the right places.
It’s like we’re hardwired to put everything aside and sit bac...

I love the Internet. It has a way of bringing people closer together. I saw Governor Howard Dean at a town hall meeting in Washington D.C earlier this month. He’s a dynamic speaker. I wanted to ask him some questions, but the place was packed, so I couldn’t get close to him. Not to be deterred, I emailed Governor Dean in hopes of getting a response to a couple of my questions. He not only responded to my email, he agreed to an interview for my blog. See, the Internet really can bring people closer together. I want to thank Governor Dean for stopping by Nurse Ratched’s Place to talk about healthcare reform.
Question: What is your take on the state of our healthcare system? What do you envision for our system, and how do we get there from here? Can America really afford a public op...

If you’ve read this blog, then I’m sure you know that Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination for HHS secretary. Some people have suggeste Howard Dean to be a nice replacement for Tom Daschle as HHS secretary, but unless I missed something in the midst of the HITECH act mania nothing’s been officially announced by Obama.
All of this means that HHS is without a secretary to implement the HITECH act along with the $2 billion of discretionary funds, choosing an EHR certification criteria, and defining meaningful EHR use.
I can’t imagine the people at HHS are just sitting on their hands, but I sure wonder what impact not having an HHS secretary will have on Obama’s health care reform.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has what it takes to be a nurse. Ben Smith from Politico wrote that Rahm, who took time out last weekend to go see The Wrestler at a local DC movie house, helped a fellow moviegoer who was having a seizure. The man was sitting right next to Rahm in the theater, and according to sources, “Rahm used some vulgarities to impress upon the movie theater staff — who wanted to move the guy out of the movie theater so they could restart the film — that they should wait until EMS got there.” Rahm also stayed and helped until EMS arrived on the scene.
Bravo, Rahm. Good job! You’ll have a second career waiting for you as a nurse when you learn how to work with doctors. You can start by making up with Howard Dean. Read what Howard wrote...

The current Obama administration is putting plenty of attention on HEALTH, and I’m not talking about health care and insurance, although hopefully we’ll have good news on those fronts in the next four years. What I’m talking about are money and heads of offices – two factors that dictate how U.S. research in genetics and health will be conducted and approached in the next four years.
This week, when President Obama signed the Economic Recovery Act, the NIH got $10 billion in funds for research, medical education and patient care. Another $19 billion went to a health information technology initiative for creating electronic medical records.
In the political front, who is going to replace Daschle as candidate for the Health and Human Services Secretary? The Wall Street Journal writ...

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., waves to the overflow crowd as she walks with campaign aide Huma Abedin, right, and a secret service agent at a campaign event in Huron, S.D., Thursday, May 29, 2008. Clinton is campaigning in the state in anticipation of the June 3rd South Dakota presidential primary election.
Flap can’t help but think the reason why Barack Obama has NOT agreed to pay off Hillary’s campaign debts (rumored by some to be over $30 million) is because he would decimate his own fundraising accounts AND the DNC would not be able to backfill him because they are out of money.
Millions of dollars behind in raising money and unlikely to meet a fast-approaching final deadline, the Denver committee hosting the Democratic National Conven...

Ad from the Democrat Party
The Democrats and Democrat National Chairman Howard Dean are lying about John McCain again.
The Republican National Committee demanded Monday that television networks stop running a television ad by the Democratic Party that falsely suggests John McCain wants a 100-year war in Iraq.
The ad says President Bush has talked about staying in Iraq for 50 years, then plays a clip of McCain saying, “Maybe 100. That’d be fine with me.”
The announcer then says: “If all he offers is more of the same, is John McCain the right choice for America’s future?”
Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan said the ad deliberately distorts what McCain, the likely GOP presidential nominee, said.

Howard Dean Watch: Either Hillary or Obama MUST Drop Out After June Primaries

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean speaks during a taping of ‘Meet the Press’ in Washington, April 27, 2008. Dean appeared on the show to speak about the 2008 presidential race and the ongoing battle for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Howard Dean will enforce this decree - GET OUT.
Democratic Party Chairman Howard Dean said Monday that either Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama must drop out of the Democratic presidential race after the June primaries in order to unify the party by the convention and win the election in November.
But Dean didn’t say which candidate should drop out, only that it should happen after primary voters have been to the polls.
“We want the voters to have their say. That’s over on June 3,” Dean said in an interview on...
