One aspect of growing older is that you see history repeated, in some cases over and over again. It didn't take long after passage of the health care reform legislation for the medical schools to ramp up a campaign to increase the number of physicians. I've seen this before and the increase of physicians brought more of the same; more specialty medical care, increased costs and increase in chronic health problems. You might say that I am harsh on medical care to lay the chronic health problem at their feet but medical care has not stopped or even slowed the increasing incidence of chronic diseases. The success of medical care is to sustain chronic diseases, which is preferable to death, but it robs people and society of vitality and treasure and distracts from addressing the cause of these...

Seems the vast right wing conspiracy is at it again. On the first anniversary of Obamacrap comes word a "high profile conservative group" is planning on suing HHS to find out the criteria for granting Obamacrap waivers.I thought it was obvious . . . they use ping-pong balls with numbers.According to Fox, Crossroads GPS will file suit in the next few days.At issue is the Obama administration's criteria for granting 1,040 of the temporary health care reform waivers to businesses, labor groups and a handful of states. Those organizations are being allowed to opt out of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act -- at least until 2014 -- in order to let them develop systems and alternatives to meet the health care reform law's strict coverage requirements.HHS data suggest more than 2.6 mil...

At the July 21 meeting of the HIT Standards, we approved an initial set of standards for quality, clinical operations and security/privacy. We were told to refine these initial efforts by the next meeting of the Committee, August 20, so that ONC and CMS can incorporate the work into the interim final rule. Here's an update on the deliberations of the workgroups.

Online casinos have paved a way to an increasing numbers of poker players worldwide. With the increased numbers of interested players, poker sites and online casinos are consequently spurting everywhere. But only a few of them can be considered the “best ones”. Good thing, online casino reviews like Online Casino Bluebook exists to give as the bests of us onlin...

In heartening news for health journalists everywhere, an Ontario study in the July issue of Diabetic Medicine found that physicians stood up and took notice when news that rosiglitazone increased MI risk in diabetics was emblazoned across every newspaper in the country - including our own National Review of Medicine.(Read our coverage of Steve Nissen's controversial meta-analysis here and the fallout here.)Looking at records of new prescriptions for Ontario residents, the researchers found that just after the meta-analysis started making headlines, new scripts abruptly declined."This is the first time we’ve seen a prescribing change so quickly following this type of study, and it shows that media exposure can influence health care,” notes lead author Dr Baiju Shah.He adds, "All of this...

This story has caused a stir in the New Zealand press: bad health IT creates mayhem.I fear such events are far more common in healthcare than we know, publicity only occurring when someone goes to the press (often at risk to their career, unfortunately). It appears this hospital went out of its way to violate just about every concept presented in the biomedical informatics literature about the potential risks of clinical IT when developed and managed by non-clinicians.Bad health informatics can kill, but doctors shouldn't worry about it. As in my posts here and here, doctors can't understand IT because they're too consumed with patient care issues, the rate of change of IT is too fast for their limited minds, and a degree doesn't get you anything, anyway. The IT leaders from the School of ...

Well, I was going to write about the day I met Elizabeth Edwards (prompted by this exchange from yesterday over at BlogHer) but it will have to wait.Because today is Blog Day: created with the belief that bloggers should have one day dedicated to getting to know other bloggers from other countries and areas of interest. On that day Bloggers will recommend other blogs to their blog visitors. With the goal in mind, on this day every blogger will post a recommendation of 5 new blogs. This way, all blog readers will find themselves leaping around and discovering new, previously unknown blogs. I am choosing to interpret "previously unknown" to mean blogs that are new to me, as well as blogs I read but about which I have yet to write in my blog. Here are my recommendations for Blog Day 2007:1. c...

I've finished the two experiments I described in the last post: (1) a time course to find out how long it takes for induction of sxy by IPTG to give production of beta-galactosidase by the ppdA::lacZ gene fusion, and (2) a 'dose-response curve' to see how much IPTG is needed to induce the fusion. And I'm posting the resulting graphs, along with a sketch of the E. coli cells I'm using for this experiment. The sketch shows that the cells contain two plasmids. The one on the left is pASKAsxy; it carries the E. coli sxy gene (red) under the control of the Plac promoter (blue arrow). This promoter is normally OFF in these cells so the sxy gene is not expressed, but the promoter can be activated by adding a lactose-analog called IPTG. The plasmid on the right carries the lacZ gene, which codes fo...
