I recently had the opportunity to attend an event in my hometown of Atlanta that honored the top 25 women in healthcare – a group of powerful and intelligent providers and payers that are leading the industry into a new era. The awards were preceded by a conference featuring such illustrious speakers as the US Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin. I think it’s safe to say that everyone in the audience came away feeling like yes, we’ve come a long way, but that there is so much more to be done in terms of truly transforming healthcare delivery.

By Julian SanchezIn his famous “Petition of the Candlemakers,” the great classical liberal thinker Frederic Bastiat lampooned the protectionist arguments of his day by imagining a campaign—launched by the producers of artificial illumination—against “ruinous competition” from that “merciless” scab… the sun. Via In These Times and the Lawyers, Guns & Money blog, I see that someone forgot to explain to the Newspaper Guild and National Writers Union that Bastiat’s petition was, you know, satire.
Borrowing a page from writer Jon Tasini, whose meritless lawsuit against the Huffington Post was roundly and justly ridiculed back in April, those two groups are advocating a boycott of the opinion and news site. They complain that, though HuffPo...

In case you missed it, Dr. Jon LaPook, chief medical correspondent for the CBS Evening News, penned an important post on the Huffington Post about OCD.
For his CBS segment, he interviewed Jeff Bell, KCBS radio broadcaster and author of “Rewind, Replay, Repeat: A Memoir of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder” and “When In Doubt, Make Belief: Life Lessons from OCD.”
In his Huffington Post piece, Dr. LaPook writes:
“It’s my OCD.” I hear that on and off from friends and patients who half-jokingly use the term to describe overly careful behavior (such as double-checking to make sure the stove is off) but don’t actually have obsessive-compulsive disorder. True OCD can be a devastating disease. Patients have intrusive, uncontrollable thoughts and severe a...

Arianna Huffington isn’t known for her mental health advice, but last week at an Urban Zen event, “The Politics of Sustainable Wellness,” put on by Donna Karan, the media mogul sounded off about what makes her happy and ultimately, keeps her in good mental and physical health. So what makes one of Forbes’ Most Influential Women in Media feel good? Sleep, mostly. And a few things she likes to call her “joy triggers,” too.
The event was third in a series of talks hosted by Dr. Frank Lipman, M.D., called “Conversations in Sustainable Health.” (We’ve posted about the first two here and here.) While past talks have focused on research and medicine, Huffington talked more about the practicalities — both political and personal — of getting...

Going to the Huffington Post for medical information is perhaps comparable to going to Vito Corleone for advice on income tax compliance. Another prominent blogger refers to is as “that hive of scum and quackery,” a lovely and accurate epithet for a media outlet which provides refuge and cover for anti-vaccationists, homeopaths and practictioners of reiki and other such pseudoscientific twaddle. I avoid the HuffPo like the plague. But, like a moth to the flame, sometimes I can’t help myself, and when a facebook friend (and former blogger) pointed to this contrarian article, my interest was piqued and I had to check it out.

Want to learn more about social media’s impact on relationships?
The PBS series This Emotional Life is hosting a free webinar and interactive discussion on this topic next week.

I love Riva Greenberg. We are all so fortunate that she is able to devote herself to helping people with diabetes. She has much wisdom and many gifts to share with us.
She wrote a post recently (A Valentine’s Gift of Health and Happiness) about her experience with Divabetics (another group I’d like to write more about – Max is awesome), and there was a section that jumped out at me.
Many healthcare providers unknowingly try to motivate diabetes patients to manage their condition through fear — specifically, fear of diabetes complications, which indeed are scary. But fear motivates behavior temporarily — you jump to protect yourself from harm. Fear does not motivate sustainable behavior change because you do not want to stay focused on your fears.
You jump to...

Comedian Stephen Colbert, who says he is “a huge supporter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation,” nonetheless took a sarcastic swing at the organization this week “for spending almost a million dollars a year in donor funds to sue…other groups” for using the phrase “for the Cure” in their promotions.
We blogged, “Who owns pink ideas or cure slogans? Welcome to the Charity Brawl” back in August after the Wall Street Journal (to our knowledge) first reported the story.

Here’s an appropriate post for New Year’s Eve!
How to organize your life!
So that everything that happens in 2011 will fit into a nice, neat category.
Sort of.
My only resolution this year is to become more organized in the way I work and live so that work and life are less on my mind during the times that I’m supposed to be chilling with the kids or hanging with friends.
I hereby declare that I am guilty of the perspective of just getting through something to get to the other side, where things will be peaceful. I’m constantly wishing for a date in the nearby future, where the specific problems and complications of today won’t be there.
But that attitude robs me of so many teaching moments of today.

Thus, next year, I am going to try my best to be as organiz...

I needed a reminder of them, and I thought maybe you could use one too.
1. Walk Away
Know your triggers. If a conversation about global warming, consumerism, or the trash crisis in the U.S. is overwhelming you, simply excuse yourself. If you’re noise-sensitive and the scene at Toys-R-Us makes you want to throw whistling Elmo and his buddies across the store, tell your kids you need a time-out. (Bring along your husband or a friend so you can leave them safely, if need be.)
Over the weekend, my wife and I happened to be in the pharmacy section of our local Target store. We happened to be looking for one of our favorite cold remedies, because both of us have been suffering from rather annoying colds, which have plagued both of us for the last week or two.
As we perused the Cold and Flu section of the pharmacy, we were struck at how much shelf space was taken up by Airborne (which was “invented by a schoolteacher.“) Nearly three years ago Airborne had to settle a case brought against it alleging false advertising to the tune of $23 million. Despite that, Airborne is still being sold, and there are even a whole bunch of knock-off products copying it.
Then, as we continued to look for our favored cold remedy, we noted that, sitting right next to the extensive...

(And no, this doesn’t mean you have to become Robert Smith.)
With more than two decades of diabetes clocked in, my faith in a cure has been shaken with every diabetes anniversary. Each September, I realize that more has been done to improve the quality of life for people with diabetes, but little has been done in giving us the hope that a cure — a real cure — is possible in our lifetime.
Except last year, when I made a trip to Florida to visit the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI), my hope was reignited. The Diabetes Research Institute is functioning solely to provide research for a cure for diabetes. And I have cautious hope that they will be the ones to make great strides in curing type 1 diabetes. If not for me, then for the generation after me.
Which is why I am p...

By Tim LynchOver at the Huffington Post, I scrutinize a recent Legal Memorandum published by the Heritage Foundation on the Prop. 19 ballot initiative.
Here is an excerpt:
The Heritage memorandum claims that if Prop 19 were approved, it would conflict with the federal criminal statute, the Controlled Substances Act and thus “invite litigation that would almost certainly result in [Prop 19] being struck down” as unconstitutional. This legal claim is dead wrong. While it is true that the supremacy clause of the Constitution makes it clear that federal law will override a conflicting state law, that clause simply has no application here. The federal law on marijuana remains in force, but that does not mean that a state government is under any obligation to assist the feds. As th...

By Michael F. CannonBack in August of 2007, I issued a challenge to Jesse Larner, who blogs at HuffingtonPost. One week later, Larner took up my challenge in a post that I’ve just finished reading.
Larner very graciously admitted to a couple of misstatements, and I must reciprocate. I wrote, “I challenge Larner to show where a Cato scholar … describes America’s as a ‘free-enterprise system of health care.’” Sure enough, Larner found an oped where one of my colleagues wrote, “I live in a country with a free-market health-care system.” Obviously, I disagree with that claim. But Larner was right, and I will have to look into this.
A few remaining areas of disagreement:

I wrote that Larner “claims that people don’t di...

What the hell is wrong with the water in the Delaware Bay? The New Jersey E.P.A is performing tests on the oxygen levels of the water, but they still don’t know what caused tens of thousands of fish to wash up on the shores of Southern New Jersey on the Delaware Bay. And man, do these fish stink. Not even the seagulls want them. Those flying rats eat rotting garbage, so there must be something very wrong with the fish – aside from the fact that they’re dead.

A Maine lobsterman is trying to take the lobstering tradition back to the old days — for the environment. Nat Hussey is using recycled gear that he found on the shore; propels his boat through pure manpower; and pulls up his lobster traps by hand. He’ll be making half the income he earned when worked on a large commercial boat, but he’ll produce zero carbon emissions.
Hussey compares himself to small-scale organic farmers. Has America had it with corporations and factories? Do you think we’ll all return to the older, simpler ways of doing things? Somehow, we doubt it.

Pamela Anderson Adopts Pets From Gulf Region, So We Have to Like Her a Little

Remember those heartbreakingly adorable Gulf region pets that had to be given to shelters because their owners couldn’t afford to keep them? Well, Pamela Anderson is doing her part to raise awareness about the poochies and kitties still in need by traveling to the Gulf and adopting two pets of her own. PETA is working to organize adopt-a-thons to find good homes for the pets made homeless by the BP oil spill.
Dammit, now we have to like Pam Anderson. But just because we think she went overboard with the cosmetic surgeries doesn’t mean we think she’s a bad person. Same goes for all the celebs over 40 we’re going to try our best not to look like. Except for Mel Gibson. He actually is a bad person.

If we were part of the wild animal kingdom, we’d be totally fed up with humans by now. Animals have been farmed, domesticated, hunted, driven to extinction, and, recently, covered in oil. They’ve probably had enough. But some animals just keep on giving. (Of course, they don’t have much of a say in the matter.) The Huffington Post has a cool slideshow of some animals who help humans do things we really can’t do alone — like patrol the ocean for terrorists (see cute dolphin below). We just hope these animal employees are treated just as well as their human co-workers — or better. Check out the full set of photos here.

This article shows a misunderstanding of journalistic ethics, medical ethics, and medical science. It’s a disaster. And it’s no surprise that it’s in the Huffington Post.
While this is a medicine story, my question relates to why an organization with a lot of great front-page news so frequently posts medical articles that are wrong and, sometimes, downright dangerous.
Read the article first, then read Dr. Lipson’s analysis.
Disclosure: I am an occasional contributor to Science Based Medicine but, like all contributors there, receive no compensation.

Think about everything you’ve thrown out today so far. A lot of crap, right? The average person tosses four pounds of trash a day. But get this: An eco-friendly couple in Oregon created just four pounds of trash over 365 days. They decided to go debris-free for an entire year, and through recycling, buying locally grown food, and composting, they accumulated around 75 pieces of small trash during that time. Crazy. Could you do it?

Verizon Wireless announced plans to open a state-of-the-art green store in the Bank of America Tower in New York City. The Bank of America Tower is certified from the Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — so, basically, it’s super green. But cell phones are definitely not.
A Huffington Post article suggests that it would be more beneficial to the environment for Verizon to have a “Turn Off Your Cellphone Hour” rather than open up one eco-friendly storefront. What do you think? Is it hypocritical for a company that sells a not-eco friendly product to operate out of a green store? Or does every little green effort count?

Unfortunately, skin care in the sun isn’t as simple as slapping on some SPF and reapplying as the day wears on. Food, creams, and medications all can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Check out this CBS clip on things that make sunburn worse. But don’t freak out when you see the margarita among the forbidden foods — it’s only bad if you rub it directly onto your skin. Which we don’t do that often – on purpose, anyway.

If you need something to occupy yourself today while BP is trying to put a new cap on the leaking oil well in the Gulf, we’ve got just the thing. It’s called Instant Oil Spill, and it’s an interactive site that brings the murky toxins of the oil spill right to your computer screen.
The site is brought to you by A Cleaner Future, a nonprofit that focuses on creating awareness about alternative and cleaner energy sources. We thought that adding a little oil spill to the BP website would be cathartic, and, while it was sort of fun in an ironic way to see the black goop fill their homepage, it just wasn’t all that satisfying.

Worrying is second-nature to some, while others seem immune, but for most of us, it’s a pretty natural emotion. But according to Tom Ferry, author of Life by Design, you could actually be addicted to the stress and anxiety of worry. In his Huffington Post article, “Are You Addicted To Worry,” he explains that he believes addiction to worry is the number one thing keeping people from achieving their hopes and dreams, interfering with plans, relationships, and action. So how do you know if you’re addicted to worry? Here are 6 signs that you’ve got a habit to kick:

Everything makes you feel depressed, concerned, or fearful. Everything.
The people around you are also worrywarts.

Let’s face it: The Middle East is a dangerous place to be if you’re a woman. Just last week we learned about innocent women locked up in an Afghanistan prison for fabricated crimes, and today we read on The Huffington Post about an Iranian mother of two who could be stoned to death at any moment.
Sakineh Mohammadie Ashtiani was accused of adultery in 2006 and received a punishment of 99 lashes. Her case was then re-opened, and she was put on trial for the alleged murder of her husband. Even though she was acquitted, the judge handed down her death penalty order – even though there was no evidence.
Last week, Amnesty International called for Iran to halt all executions, but the International Committee Against Stoning and the Death Penalty says tha...

Of course, the U.S. Geological Survey has known about Afghanistan’s “large quantities of iron and copper” since 2007. The Los Angeles Times reported that geologist Bonita Chamberlain, who has spent 25 years working in Afghanistan, “identified 91 minerals, metals and gems at 1,407 potential mining sites” as far back as 2001. Chamberlain was even contacted by the Pentagon to write a report on the subject just weeks after 9/11 (possibly to expound upon the findings of her co-authored book, “Gems...

By David BoazGeorge Will, whose speech at the Milton Friedman Prize for Advancing Liberty Dinner can be heard here, writes today about Rand Paul’s victory in Kentucky:
Democrats and, not amazingly, many commentators say Republicans are the ones with the worries because they are nominating strange and extreme candidates. Their Exhibit A is Rand Paul, winner of Kentucky’s Republican primary for the U.S. Senate.
Well. It may seem strange for a Republican to have opposed, as Paul did, the invasion of Iraq. But in the eighth year of that war, many Kentuckians may think he was strangely prescient. To some it may seem extreme to say, as Paul does, that although the invasion of Afghanistan was proper, our current mission there is “murky.” But many Kentuckians may think this...

Your favorite eco-friendly company sells products made from recycled materials, but do they really keep all their practices as “green” as they can?
As Josh Dorfman (The Lazy Environmentalist) points out on The Huffington Post, some seemingly environmentally-friendly companies may not be doing all they can to actually keep up their green practices. For example, how does the company package their items? If you get the product you ordered and it’s wrapped in layers of plastic wrap and extra packing material, it’s probably a good indication that the company may not care all that much about the environment – they may just be riding the green wave.
So check on the company’s history. Search for old media mentions and see if they always upheld eco-...

Ever wonder what happens to subway cars after their rush-hour commuting days are over? They become environmentalists. Out-of-service New York City train cars have been stripped and dumped into the Atlantic Ocean along the east coast in order to become artificial reefs for marine life. The cars look so much more appealing under water – we wish we could hitch a ride to work on the back of our sea turtle friend every day.

With the 50th birthday of The Pill last weekend, stories about birth control are everywhere we look. Women have never been so empowered about having control over their own bodies. But, of course, many people don’t believe that a woman should be in control of her own body. Anya Alvarez, a college senior, posted on Facebook about a recent terrifying experience she had. She was having sex with a guy when she realized that not only had he taken off the condom, but he had also removed her Nuva Ring. She confronted him, bolted, and later sent him an email explaining how blatantly disrespectful his actions were. The guy replied with an apology, and a shocking confession – it was something he had done many times before.
Alvarez hasn’t been able to find a lawyer who&...

Investments in maternal health are reaping powerful results. It’s hard for those of us lucky enough to live in developed countries to imagine why anyone would die from complications in pregnancy or childbirth. We know it happens and there are outlyer examples; but generally, this is not the expectation in our communities
Well, globally, the number of women who die from pregnancy complications and childbirth has been hovering around 500,000 each year. This year’s research yielded a 35% reduction in this number, down to 342,900 in 2008 (up from 529,300 in 1980!) Bravo.
The Huffington Post reports that about half the deaths each year come from countries in Asia and Africa; China and South America have seen improvement. Here’s sobering datapoint: the US, Canada and...

Spring allergies blow. This may be one of the loveliest times of year, but let’s face it – some of us are just plain miserable. Stuffy nose, dry cough, itchy eyes – your face feels like a punching bag. Sound familiar? Instead of spending your paycheck on over-the-counter meds, check out these natural remedies courtesy of The Huffington Post that may actually let you enjoy smelling the flowers this season.
Eat This
When you feel a flare-up coming on, avoid foods that build up mucus like raw and cold foods (sushi), dairy products (ice cream), corn (even corn syrup), simple sugars, grains (wheat, rye, or barley), boozing, and smoking. Instead, try whole grains like quinoa, amaranth, and brown rice. Many fruits contain bromelain, a natural antihistamine, so eat pineapples, papayas, cra...

It all started so innocently. A couple of years ago I signed up for Google AdSense. It looked like a fair deal. I was working with a legitimate company—not a fly by night operation—so I figured that I didn’t have anything to lose. I won’t say that the money started rolling in. It didn’t. The checks were barely worth the postage, so I asked Google to hold onto my meager earnings and I started a Google savings account. It was my piggy bank. I was keeping that money there for a rainy day.
Many months passed. Then one day I really needed the cash. I’ll spare you the details, but I tried logging into my Google AdSense account. My account was closed and my money was gone. This is what I found instead:

It was with interest that I read Dr. Soram Khalsa’s post on The Huffington Post about the Vitamin D epidemic in this country today. The medical doctor writes this:
As a board certified internist, I have chosen, for the last 30 years, to take a personalized approach in my practice of integrative medicine. I have worked with literally hundreds of herbs, vitamins and dietary supplements, to help my patients, often when drugs did not work. In all this time, I have not seen one nutritional supplement that has the power to affect human health as much as vitamin D. This is because Vitamin D is not actually a vitamin — it is a hormone that has the ability to interact and affect more than 2,000 genes in the body.
Over my 30 years of practicing medicine, countless times I have had to d...

(As I have previously noted here, Appel has supported assisted suicide for the mentally ill, genetic engineering of progeny, and the acceptability of bestiality.)But this fetal farming boost appeared in the Huffington Post, perhaps the most influential blog on the Left, with millions of readers. And it is pernicious in the extreme. From Appel's column:Opponents of reproductive choice will object to such a market on the grounds that it wil...

Obama Intel Chief Sought National ID?

While Republican members of the Senate Intelligence Committee have written a letter objecting to the experience level of National Intelligence Council Chairman Chas Freeman, Ashley Rindsberg at the Huffington Post reveals that Freeman advocated creating a national identity system in the US as a part of the “war on terror.”
During a 9/11 Commission interview, Freeman remarked that of three major changes the US government should make to effectively combat terror, one was that “the United States should implement a national identity system, so we better know who is who.”

Happy New Year to all of my readers!I've been quite busy with other parts of my life in recent weeks to do much blogging, and while I'm almost wrapped up with my annual review on diabetes research and the outlook for the coming year, I still had to share the following with everyone: an editorial on The Huffington Post. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, The Huffington Post is perhaps the ultimate blog. It's described as a news website and aggregated weblog founded by Arianna Huffington which features various news sources and columnists. The Huffington Post won the 2006 and 2007 Webby Awards for Best Politics Blog. All I can say is that I couldn't agree MORE with the following post there:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeanne-lenzer-and-shannon-brownlee/a-new-years-resolution-fo_b_156...

This DUMBASS LIAR is the gift that keeps on giving.

Maybe Arianna Huffington was just mistaken? Or more interested in selling books?
O’REILLY: Did you vote for President Bush?
MCCAIN: Of course not. I campaigned all over this country for him.
O’REILLY: So you voted for President Bush.
MCCAIN: Of course. I mean, that’s a ridiculous question.
O’REILLY: So she lied?
MCCAIN: Well, I don’t — frankly, I do not read Huffington Post. I spare myself from having that experience.
O’REILLY: You voted for Bush in 2000?
MCCAIN: I voted for Bush in 2000 and 2004.
O’REILLY: OK.
MCCAIN: And not only that, far more important than a vote, I campaigned everywhere in America for him.
Well, Arianna, you have been CALLED OUT as a LIAR. Someone else hear McCain say that he did NOT vote for President Bush? And, frankly, h...

California Autism Epidemic Gold Rush

Autism Diva is still trying to take a break from blogging. But...here we are at the beginning of another Department of Developmental Services quarter and we've just received another report from the DDS showing how many of each sort of clients they served the previous quarter. These quarterly reports have been used by Rick Rollens for a few years now to promote a non-existent autism epidemic. And predictably Rollens has found a way to spin the new numbers into another dire warning of impending autistic doom and devastation.According to information released this week by California's Department of Developmental Services (DDS) during the second quarter of 2007 (April - June) California added a record 961 new cases of autism to it's developmental services system.
