Hunter-Philanthropist may seem like an unlikely breed of modern man, but the Sportsman’s Channel (yes, that is a channel) is encouraging just that. The channel has a new non-profit initiative to feed the hungry called Hunt.Fish.Feed., and the basic idea is that hunters bring their kill (and fishers bring their catch) to impoverished people in Los Angeles, including those in shelters.
The thought of a burly hunter slamming a dead deer carcass onto a soup kitchen table make us snicker, but it’s hard to criticize a program whose goal is to feed the hungry. We do wonder if the organization could have used the money spent on bullets, transportation, permits, and butchering to get a lot of fruits and vegetables for L.A.’s hungry, though.

I posted yesterday about how I don't like certain words to describe cancer and dealing with a diagnosis. A comment in reply did point out that some people actually feel empowered by them. This is a reminder that every one is different and every cancer is different. Just because I don't like something doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. And what works for me doesn't work for others. Well, doh! Otherwise, I am doing okay. I am still dilemmaing about my ankle - surgery or no. Sometimes its fine and sometimes it hurts. Like right now while lying in bed. I am undecided. I heard back from the lymphedema lady and will be going back in to see her. Puffiness in my hand isn't a good thing and its been happening fairly regularly. My back is having good days and bad days. Today I am making a positive ...

If you’ve texted “Haiti” to the American Red Cross, babysat for a friend in a pinch, or helped a stranger carry her stroller up a flight of stairs, it might actually be contagious. A March 8 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences indicates that people who’ve benefited from the charitable acts of others are more likely to emulate the kind acts, a la Helen Hunt and Kevin Spacey in “Pay It Forward.” Researchers modeled these findings in the drawing below from Wired.com. Who knew scientists could draw?

The great hunt, and non-dates continue despite my recent canine ennui.
The truth is: I can count on one finger how many times I’ve been laid since I don’t know when, probably more than six months. That was until last week.
The correlation of increased testosterone levels and the recent change in events probably have a lot to do with it.
Ultimately I’d like one out of two things to happen. Either I get to know some guys who I can get together on a regular basis, as I hate cruising these internet sites, or I get into some sort of relationship.
One guy I reconnected with online. We had seen each other in our travels but never had spoken. Every since I had seen him, I thought he was so sexy. Last week we spent a lot of time speaking on the phone with great enthusiasm to finally meeting.

As a GP, I see a lot of patients with stress. From all walks of working life, including professionals. Nadine Dorries has been roundly criticised for suggesting the MPs are now under so much pressure that there could be a suicide. They have brought it upon themselves, you may say, and so they have. But the atmosphere that has been whipped up over three weeks by the Daily Telegraph is resembling the Salem witch hunts. The public are baying for blood. Some MPs are more culpable than others. There may be an underlying political agenda. Can someone explain why Mr & Mrs Balls been given such a soft ride when Julie Kirkbride and her husband have not? Can any MP now get a fair hearing from the media?Today, Iain Dale mounts a defence of Tory MP, Julie Kirkbride. Or maybe it is more a plea i...

I’ve spent more time in therapy than I care to think about. More hours on that bloody couch than I’ve spent in the shower, brushing my teeth, or on the phone with telemarketers, because let’s face it, when I’m home, there really are no decision makers at my house. If I calculate one hour a week for 12 years, that’s 600 hours, which is 25 DAYS. What do I have to show for it? Lots of wisdom and advice. Journals and journals of it. But for your sake, I’ll just list 12. And after you get done reading my shrink insights, I want you to tell me yours, because I’m compiling such pearls for a writing project.
1. Know your triggers.
From the first year of therapy: know your triggers. If a conversation about global warming, consumerism, or the trash crisis in the U.S. is overwhelming yo...

That means kids are wreaking havoc upstairs
This week’s theme is wild but I don’t want to put up another one of my pet’s snarling photos. So, I guess, interpreted another way, this photo should fit.
Notice the random arrangement of shoes and the various sizes. The smaller ones are those nearest the stair steps while the bigger ones are those on the periphery. What actually happened was that, during a family gathering, the little kids went upstairs to the playroom, only to be fighting among themselves after a while. So the adults have to go up and see what’s happening. Hehe.

This is a photo I took of Chunky, one of Qingzi’s babies (but now, an almost-adult hamster), when I took her from her aquarium while sleeping. She never even bothered to wake up and continued to curl inwards, sleeping. I guess she’s already learned to trust me that much she isn’t even worried that I might drop her. For me, this photo is beautiful because it shows how our pets love us in return for the care and love that we give them.
I’m a bit sad, though, that I’ve to give her away today to a close friend. I can only keep a certain number of hamsters at home and Dad chose to keep the other one, Maws. But then, I’m sure my friend will take good care of her. And maybe I’ll be able to see her again when I get to visit my friend.

I discovered this over at The San Diego Traveler.
QUASH is a scavenger hunt where getting from Point A to Point B is only half the challenge. Traveling by foot or public transport, you have two and a half hours to get complete the route, solving clues and completeing challenges along the way. Some challenges need brawn, others brain and all will require teamwork.
Sure sounds like fun not to mention a great way to support the cause and raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Only catch is you have to be in Philadelphia (June 7th), San Diego (June 14th), or Indianapolis (June 21st), to participate.
You can create your own team, join an existing team or register as an individual - we can match you up with a team. Jut select your city above to find out how to get started.
If anyone ...

I was at the clinic the other day, trying to solve this cube while waiting for patients’ lab results. But then, no matter how I think about it, I just can’t seem to solve the thing. Too many permutations. So, yes, I can’t solve a 3 x 3 x 3 Rubik’s cube, so shoot me.

About | Theme: glass | Roll
I am very late for this week’s Saturday Photo Hunt. But I had a great set of photos for the theme so I decided to go ahead and post them today.
I took a short break this weekend to go to Yercaud for a day with my family and some friends. We went to a new resort for an open air dinner on Saturday. The resort is built on a hill slope with a spectacular view of Salem city. They had a walkway partly paved in glass called the ’skywalk’ which was great and it fits this week’s theme perfectly. Here are some photos.

The very edge of the skywalk.

This is view of Salem from the skywalk. It was great as night fell with all the city lights twinkling. My picture of the city lights is very bad. I should get a tripod for such shots.

This photo was taken at Starbucks Landmark, TriNoma Mall last December 20, 2007. People at coffee shops do like looking at other people and the things they do. With this glass wall, those outside can watch those who’re inside the coffee shop too. Fair deal, right? Haha.

Dr.A got it right. Congratulations.
It is a CT scanogram of a Mac Mini.
Suresh and I did this within a few days of him acquiring a Mac Mini in March 2005. We were (and still are) amazed at the size of the thing. It’s only a bit bigger than my daughter’s lunch box!
We wanted to know how they put all the things that go into a computer into something so small. But we were not crazy like these guys, who show how to take apart a new Mac Mini. Suresh has for many years been radiographing new circuit boards. So doing a CT for a compact computer was the next obvious evolutionary step. The CT techs thought we were crazy but cooperated with us.

About | Theme: metal | Roll
This is a difficult theme. At least for me. After an exhaustive search through my collection(s), I find that I do not like any of the photos that have something to do with metal. It is so bad that I cannot post something and put a spin on the description to make it fit the theme (something that I have done many times for Photo Hunt, as have many other participants).
Hence I have reinterpreted the theme (and the idea of this Photo Hunt) to my liking for this week. My apologies to tnchick.
I present to you my Photo Hunt Quiz.
Guess what this is.

Here is a close-up.

Clue: It combines radiology with one other interest of mine that the few readers of this blog are aware of.
I will post the answer on Sunday.
Meanwhile, make your guesses in the comments.

About | Theme: I spy | Roll
When we hear "I spy," we think of the children’s game.
But in the context of a theme for Photo Hunt, the phrase has a voyeuristic connotation for me. If that sounds like too strong or inappropriate an interpretation, it could be taken to mean the detection of something unanticipated in a prosaic setting.
Here is something that I spied in one of the gopurams (temple towers) on one of the outer rings of the concentric compound walls* of the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam.
Babes in bikinis and couples being awfully libidinous amongst the usual decorative motifs and sundry gods and goddesses.

About | Theme: different | Roll
I have not participated in the Saturday Photo Hunt for a few weeks now.
For this week’s theme I have posted a set of photos that I took of a noteworthy display of food items in a cookery competition organized in my daughter’s school.
What is so different about this, you may wonder. Well, this was part of the Grandparent’s Day at my daughter’s school. They hold this on the 29th of February once in four years. This year they held it on a weekend before the 29th. There are many competitions and prizes distributed to grandparents who participated in various events over the weekend. This is followed by an entertainment program with dances, songs and skits by the students and the grandparents.
Some of the different prizes included grandpare...

It’s been a while since I’ve joined the Photo Hunt and I’m glad that, after a long time of absence, I’d start the Photo Hunt again with this wonderful theme.

Now I find being able to spend some personal quiet time in a coffee shop with my favorite cup of cappuccino and write down my thoughts on my old-fashioned notebook delicious. This photo was taken while doing so at the Starbucks coffee shop located on the top level of TriNoma Mall. While nowadays it is far from quiet because a lot of people come to this place, I still value the rare times that I can do this, given the tight schedule between work and studying.

My interpretation of the theme.

An accidental shot.
A highly blurred picture of a doorway. I did not trash it because it looked so symmetrical…like an abstract work of art.

The bright orange LED signifying a monitor in hibernation.
The smaller blinking white light of a hibernating Mac mini can be seen just beyond the right upper edge of the keyboard.

There is something soothing about a dark room with sleeping computers. Or is it just me!

Have a great weekend everyone. (Source: scan man's notes)

Borrowing from my daughter’s life again for PhotoHunt.
This is one of the small lunch boxes that she takes to school. I think this one combines functionality with great looks.

The lunch box has two levels separated by the white plate on the left and a two-level lid, a white opaque one with holders for the cute spoon & fork and a transparent curved one with cartoon figures. All held together by the blue elastic band.

My daughter’s lunch for the day consisted of a bunch of mini idlis, some kothamalli (coriander) chutney and a few pieces of peeled saththukudi (mausambi / sweet lime).

I don’t know how much of this came back uneaten - a common problem in our house.

Check out the cool paisley design of our dining table. It is the oldest ...

A Hibiscus, which I learnt today from Wikipedia is the national flower of Malaysia, fellow doctor-blogger-photohunter-Indian George’s country.

I thought these were cool red leaf-like flowers with early morning dew. Thanks to JMB, I now know that they are a variety of Poinsettia, very like the ones that she was used to in her native Australia. She says she doesn’t see any of these big ones in Canada. I found another blogger connection for this flower too through Wikipedia. Enrico will be thrilled (?) to know that they are named after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States ambassador to Mexico, who introduced the plant in the U.S. in 1825. Alternative names for the poinsettia are Mexican flame leaf, Christmas star & Winter rose.

The theme for this week’s photo hunt is “classic”. And I think the above photo of a Ferris wheel is a classic. It’s a Ferris wheel at the Enchanted Kingdom (a local theme park) and is called “Wheel of Fate”. It’s bigger compared to the regular ferris wheels found in other local parks here in the Philippines (or so I think).
I remember that the first time I rode in a ferris wheel was when I was about in grade school during school fairs. The school would rent some rides like the “caterpillar” (a sort of mini-rollercoaster for kids), the “octopus” (I don’t know how else to describe it, it looks like an octopus. Period), and etcetera. Of course, the Ferris wheel was always there.
A bit of trivia about Ferris wheels:

plastic |ˈplastik| (noun) a synthetic material made from a wide range of organic polymers such as polyethylene, PVC, nylon, etc., that can be molded into shape while soft and then set into a rigid or slightly elastic form.

Elegantly moulded and utilitarian plastic. I’m sure Dr. A & meeyauw will agree.
The photo was taken in the Chicago Apple Store in 2004 where I found a display of some elegant and attractive eMacs.

The two pictures that I chose for this theme represent two of the most enjoyable occasions of creativity that I participated in.
Note: A short explanation (from Wikipedia) is in order before I post the pictures. [Skip the explanation - in block quotes - if you already know what a Rangoli is]

Rangoli is one of the most popular art forms in India. It is a form of sandpainting decoration that uses finely ground white powder and colours, and is used commonly outside homes in India. Rangoli can be wall art as well as floor art. The term rangoli is derived from words rang (colour) and aavalli (’coloured creepers’ or ‘row of colours’). The colors generally are very fine pigment podwers like those available for Holi or colors specially sold...

I’m a few hours early this week because I knew exactly what I was going to post for this theme.
‘Tiny’ can mean many things to a radiologist. But the most beautiful tiny thing that I see routinely in my practice is this…

The transvaginal scan image shows a 6-week-old embryo which measures about 6 mm (about 2 eighths of an inch).

By the sixth week an embryo is usually more than 5 mm in length (which is described as CRL, standing for Crown-to-Rump Length) and shows definite cardiac pulsations, proving that it is a viable pregnancy.
This 6 mm blob of greyness will grow over the ensuing weeks to emerge as someone’s darling child.
Note: I’ll be out of town for the weekend. So I may not be able to visit other blogs or respond to co...

After a few minutes of thinking about the theme, I decided I was going with the plural ’shadows,’ for which I had the perfect set of photos.

My photo for this week’s Photo Hunt features my daughter again!
I decided on this photo for this week’s theme ‘Fake’ two weeks ago when I saw the theme list.

This was taken one night at home about 6 months ago.
My daughter wanted to know how she would look if she had a moustache like mine. So her mother’s eyebrow pencil (hey, I didn’t know ipanema was a colour!!) was borrowed and my make-up talents were utilized to get fairly good results (in my opinion). After a week of racking my brain I could not think of anything original for this week’s theme sweet, I almost gave up.
Thanks to inspiration from Ipanema who has posted a set of exquisite photos & JMB, I have something to post….
To a young father, there can be nothing sweeter than his daughter. Here are a few photos of my daughter, taken on two separate occasions a few years ago.

That is my daughter, Aathishree holding a photo of a far younger version of herself.

I couldn’t think of anything shiny for this week’s theme. This may qualify….

This is a photo† of an interesting table lamp that is in my parents’ house in Coimbatore. This is what it looks like when it is lit in a dark room. I don’t have a photo of the piece in its unlit state. It’s made of some kind of translucent plastic with a porcelain-ish finish and it looks good unlit. The basket is pale green with darker green shading and the dogs look very natural with a light tan to dark brown colouring.
† - Shot in 2004 with a Nikon CoolPix E4500. I think I used the ‘Museum’ preset.

I’m a day late. But I thought better late than never.
I’ve wanted to join this ever since I saw it for the first time at JMB’s blog.

For this week’s theme, I’ve picked four pictures…
HAIR
My daughter dressed up for a party.

My niece getting her head shaved at 11 months of age. A tradition followed in most Hindu families. The head-shaving will be followed by a ritual ear-piercing ceremony in a temple. The kid - it happens to boys and girls - ends up with a clean shaven pate and brand new ear rings.

My daughter fresh after her tryst with the barber’s knife, hiding among the dahlias.

Following JMB’s lead, here is what time and testosterone have done to my head.
