NOTE from Phil: What follows is an excerpt from the book The Idea Hunter by Andy Boynton and Bill Fischer with William Bole. It’s an academic look at connections, for all of you who want more proof you should make time to connect with smart people. Enjoy!
Decades of statistical research have demonstrated that professionals need to think elastically about the people in their idea networks.
For example, repeated studies have shown that the longer a project team stays together without significant changes in its composition, the less likely it is to come up with ideas that lead to innovations. This is largely because members of long-running teams get into the habit of culling their ideas from a narrow band of sources: one another. They’re less likely to communicate with people working on o...

Dr. Steve Buie (plus me - ack!) June 30, 2011
Today I got a little emotional at my annual checkup.
Come with me on the way-back machine to August 9, 2001, the day severe abdominal pain sent me to the emergency room. On call that night was Dr. Steve E. Buie, my family practice physician since 1988. He ordered a physical exam, CA-125 blood test, Xray, ultrasound and CT scan. Two days later, Dr. Buie came into my hospital room and announced, “We think you have ovarian cancer.” (For the record: Some women with identical symptoms — bloating, gas pain — go undiagnosed for months or even years. Meanwhile, the cancer spreads.)
Dr. Buie insisted I see a gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Verda Hunter. One month after my visit to the emergency room, Dr. Hunter — whom I also credit wit...

Management has synonymously been associated with bad decisions, selective cost cutting, raising it's own salary and attempting to rob others of their ideas. This perception has led people to view managers as parasites, which according to new scientific data may be more correct than we previously thought. (Source: Life in the Fast Lane)

From the National Enquirer
Well, they were right about John Edwards, Rielle Hunter and their baby.
In a bombshell new development in the AL GORE sex scandal — broken EXCLUSIVELY earlier today by The ENQUIRER — the Oregon District Attorney says there’s “the possibility of a criminal prosecution.”

Hunter-Philanthropist may seem like an unlikely breed of modern man, but the Sportsman’s Channel (yes, that is a channel) is encouraging just that. The channel has a new non-profit initiative to feed the hungry called Hunt.Fish.Feed., and the basic idea is that hunters bring their kill (and fishers bring their catch) to impoverished people in Los Angeles, including those in shelters.
The thought of a burly hunter slamming a dead deer carcass onto a soup kitchen table make us snicker, but it’s hard to criticize a program whose goal is to feed the hungry. We do wonder if the organization could have used the money spent on bullets, transportation, permits, and butchering to get a lot of fruits and vegetables for L.A.’s hungry, though.
As Care2 also points o...

My new post on Politics Daily / Woman Up:
The only mystery left on the John Edwards story is why everyone is still talking about it. Looks like a cat-bites-toy tale to me.
After months of public denials, John Edwards has finally admitted he’s the father of Rielle Hunter’s 22-month-old baby girl. Yes, Edwards proved less trustworthy than his John-Boy looks suggested, but I thought Washington was used to that.
I feel sorry for John. He’s ripped right out of the pages of a Shakespearean tragedy. The word “scandal” will forever be attached to his name. My advice to him is to devote the rest of his life to obscurity and philanthropy.
Despite all the game changing in Washington, I just can’t bring myself to pile on Elizabeth Edwards. I feel bad for her, but I ...

Last month Dr Manny from Fox News enlisted the help of Chris Kilham (aka the Medicine Hunter) and went on a culinary quest to find some really strange health foods.
His first port of call was an ice cream factory in New York City’s Chinatown to sample dorian ice cream. Dorian, a fruit that’s has been cultivated in southeast Asia since prehistoric times, is loved by many Asian communities. It’s odd appearance (think football with spikes) and abhorent rotten garbage smell, though, has prevented the fruit from become popular in the western world. One look at Dr Manny’s face when he was trying this and it’s pretty obvious that the ice cream doesn’t kill the smell.
As for it’s health benefits, apparently it is thought to act as an aphrodisiac!!!

The Oncologist and Her Ghosts
by Donna Trussell
Her nightmares are blizzards.
Wind swallows words,
and faces freeze
beneath ice and snow.
She wakes with a start.
She rises, lies down, comforts
herself with memories
of another time
before cities, before textbooks
before patients who smiled
and joked and died.
No matter what she did, they died.
She recalls a night
on her father’s farm.
Southern gusts swayed
the moon-tipped trees
and above her were the only
gods she knew. She made a pact:
The stars would protect her
and she would save lives.
She was just a child then,
and even in Nebraska
summer seemed endless
and full of promise.

Rudy held his own (despite Fox’s Frank Lunz’s New Hampshire focus groups) made NO errors and looked Presidential. He remains the national frontrunner. There is NO DOUBT that Rudy has the executive leadership that will keep America SAFE.
