The deadline for submitting papers for the 13th World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics, also known as MedInfo 2010, has been extended to Oct. 15. MedInfo 2010, the triennial meeting of the International Medical Informatics Association, is scheduled for Sept. 12-15, 2010, in Cape Town, South Africa. This will mark the first time a global health IT conference has been held in Africa, and it comes just a few months after South Africa also becomes the first African nation to host the FIFA World Cup next June and July (you know, winter in the Southern Hemisphere). I covered the last two MedInfos, in Brisbane, Australia, in 2007, and in San Francisco in 2004. I had stories to write for months after the fact. I also was the only professional journalist from either North America or Europ...

I don't want to jump on any bandwagons just yet, since plenty of what I've seen in health 2.0 so far is bluster. Sure, there are some interesting ideas, but whether they actually help in the provision of care remains to be proven. I am a big fan of disclosure, however, and I am becoming a big fan of social networking. The latter has helped me reconnect with several people I'd lost touch with.On that note, here are a couple of interesting links I picked up recently:A hospital rating site in Ireland called RateMyHospital.ie seems to be attracting a lot of activity. As of this writing, the counter indicates that 9,896 surveys have been completed. I'm not sure when the site started, but we're talking about a country with just 4.2 million people. RateMyHospital is part of a privately run site c...

All too quickly, medinfo2007 has been and gone. Blogging from the event proved to be more challenging than we had expected - Internet access in Australia is nowhere near as cheap and readily available as we have come to expect in other places we have travelled to, or here in the UK. CHIRAD members did contribute various blog posts, which can be found on Informaticopia and the hi-blogs.info blog. If anyone has additional comments, please feel free to add them to the existing posts. If you have photos you would like to share, then contact us about how to do this (ie, don't just email them to us). (Source: The CHIRAD blog)

After a week of pressing deadlines and erratic sleep courtesy of the worst case of jet lag I've ever encountered, I've finally collected my thoughts and my wits, and am ready to post a few things from MedInfo 2007 and related conferences.I thought I'd start by posting links to some of the stories I've written from my trip to Australia. I have a couple of podcasts to post as well, plus some more writing to do, but here's something. I was the only full-time journalist from either North America or Europe at MedInfo, so I'm using that to my advantage. (If there's any editor out there still interested in coverage, I'm listening. I have nearly 500 poster presentations to draw on, to give you an idea of the breadth of material available.)From Digital HealthCare & Productivity "Optimism Marks ...

Yesterday did not start over-well - we arrived early to hear Richard Stallman (as did many other people), only to find that her had been moved to an afternoon slot, ie the same time I was speaking. However, I hope one of our colleagues will provide a report. My first presentation of the day was about IMIA, its Working Groups and Nursing Special Interest Group, and its Strategic Plan. I included materials and comments sent by Nancy Lorenzi, IMIA President, which were well-received and appreciated. The session was focused on how Cubans in particular, and people in any other country, can become more involved in IMIA's WG/SIG and wide range of other activities. Some in...

The Tuesday afternoon session began with a presentation by Dr Alvaro Margolis, from Uraguay, in his role as President of IMIA-LAC, the Latin-America and Caribbean region of IMIA (www.imia.org). IMIA-LAC was established in 1983, with representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba (the Cuban Society for Medical Informatics, founded in 1970) and Mexico. He outlined the strategic objectives of IMIA-LAC for 2006-09, which include strengthening the network of societies in the region, through both the national societies and through universities and other institutions. He talked of the need to try and encourage the development of health informatics societies in the various countries that do not have one. Other objectives include identifying specific areas (and related groups) where health informatic...

It began with a presentation by Graham Wright titled 'Exploring the knowledge base for health informatics: the Otley duckfest and beyond'. He briefly discussed the background to the project, from the original 'Education Steps' project at Otley in early 2005, including the origin of the research methods used and the rationale for using Bloom's taxonomy for focusing on the cognitive, rather than psychomotor, aspects of health informatics. He described the process of participants identifying the elements of health informatics and then grouping them, by use of post-it notes for smaller elements and tables for the larger themes, so that people could walk around and get a feel fo...
