These Antiviral Authorisation Vouchers include the new dosage regimen for oseltamivir and will ensure that children under one year of age get the recommended dose for their age and weight.

Title: Guidance on sickness certification in response to the swine flu pandemic
The Skinny: Clarifies that the existing arrangements for provision of medical certificates or self-certification have not changed in light of the swine flu pandemic.
The situation is being kept under close review to enable action to be taken quickly, should it be necessary.

Fade Fade: PCTs decide on swine flu vaccine priority
Fade Skinny: Primary care trusts have been left to decide which frontline staff they should immunise against swine flu first, risking local variation and dispute. The Department of Health last week said staff with “regular clinical contact with patients and who are directly involved in patient care” would receive the vaccine as soon as it is available – probably in late September or early October. However, primary care trusts will have to prioritise different staff groups themselves.

Title: NHS Immunisation Statistics, England 2008-09, Bulletin
The Skinny: Key Facts

immunisation of 12-13 year old girls (school year 8) against HPV, and thus protecting them against most cervical cancers, has started well with just over 87 per cent of eligible girls receiving the first dose and 70 per cent of eligible girls completing the programme of all 3 doses. Figures are published at England, Strategic Health Authority (SHA) and Primary Care Trust (PCT) level
78 per cent of children received first and second doses of MMR vaccine between the ages of 2 and 5, a full 4 percentage point increase on the previous year’s figure; this coincides with the launch of an MMR catch-up campaign which began in August 2008. Although London remains below the national average coverage for this a...

all pregnant women, subject to licensing considerations on trimesters
household contacts of immunocompromised individuals
people aged 65 and over in the current seasonal flu vaccine clinical at-risk groups

I am grateful to an NHS BLOG DOCTOR reader for pointing me at an article by the normally reliable Fraser Nelson. Fraser has penned an ill-judged and uncharacteristically inaccurate rant about thiomersal (aka thimerasol). One of the two swine-flu immunisations that the government has ordered contains thiomersal. Most of you have probably not heard of it. It is a preservative that has been used in vaccines with great success for over fifty years. Nobody would have heard of it now had a group of parents of autistic children not decided that it was thiomersal that caused their children to develop autism. There is not one jot of evidence to support this belief and there is a vast body of evidence to the contrary. Thiomersal is safe. The chemical name of thiomersal is sodium ethylmercurithiosalic...

Nursing Times has carried out a survey to find out how many of their members would be prepared to have a swine-flu immunisation.Overall 30% of survey respondents answered ‘no’ when asked if they would get immunised when the vaccine became available, compared with 37% who replied ‘yes’. A further 33% remained undecided and answered ‘maybe’.Nursing TimesThe Government’s chief Commissar for immunisations said that nurses had a “duty” to be immunised.Nurses who opt to have the vaccine can expect to be given one of two products, both of which will require two jabs roughly three weeks apart. The majority of swine flu vaccine will be the adjuvant version manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, which contains 4mcg of antigen. The second type, manufactured by Baxter, is a whole virus vac...

The latest immunisation problem has been badly handled by the government.Britain's medicines watchdog has authorised the recall of 21,000 doses of a Meningitis C vaccine used to immunise young babies due to contamination fears. The affected batches of the vaccine, which is sold under the trade name Menjugate, were delivered by the manufacturer, Novartis Vaccines, in January and February. So far 21,000 doses have been sent out to GPs and clinics. The TimesThat is 21,000 doses of the immunisation scattered around the country.[The Governemnt], the MHRA and Novartis have all issued assurances that the recall is purely precautionary and there is "no evidence" that the vaccine is tainted or poses a risk to health.IbidI’m sorry, that will not do. He is also responsible for the blog of the same name. His Bad Science blog has become the most respected and widely read scientific blog in the UK, and one of the most respected sources of sensible no-nonsense science in the world. Ben writes with a light touch, and uses gentle humour rather than vitriol to unmask the quacks and the pedlars of pseudo-science. OK, I don’t have any of the high risk conditions like asthma and COPD and so on but I am a "health care worker."Professor Steve Field, chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, said: "It's very worrying. People - even doctors - have forgotten what flu is. They have not seen real, serious flu for years and are not getting their vaccine. It is putting patients at risk - not only from catching flu but from staff being off sick. Healthcare workers have a moral duty to get the vaccine."BBCI must admit to some bias. I’m not a fan of Steve Field. I was not happy that he popped up at the top of my profession. Not quite sure how he managed that – except to say that he is, of course, a ...

draws attention to major health challenges requiring immediate action and details progress made in key areas identified in previous annual reports.
It calls for a new focus on teenage health, and urges health services to take better account of the specific health needs of young people. It highlights the nature of risks inherent in surgery and that more attention should be given to reducing errors in surgery. Additionally, it indicates the rising levels of oesophageal cancer, the importance of vaccination in improving public health and the issue of racism in medicine. (Source: Fade Library)
