Human molar scaffold by Dr. Mao of Columbia University Medical Center
Here at DentalBlogs, we were giddy to bring you news about scientists making prosthetic sheep bones from wicker. We thought that might have been the absolute coolest thing ever. We jumped up and down while typing blog posts (thank goodness for spell check) that told you about stem cells that promote implant stabilization. We love to bring you exciting news from the world of dentistry every day. But nothing – nothing – has tickled our fancy as much as the new report from Columbia University Medical Center.
Nine weeks. New tooth. No prosthetic. Seriously.
The recipe for re-growing a tooth is as follows:

Insert a special scaffold made of natural materials
Direct stem cells within the body to the scaffold
Let the bo...

This is a breakthrough that could lead to a major overhaul in dental prosthetics and, more importantly, organ regeneration. The Wall Street Journal covered a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in which Tokyo University of Science researches implanted a “tooth germ” into a mouse’s empty tooth socket. The “tooth germ” consisted of cells with a genetic map of how to build a tooth.
Taken from Tokyo University of Science press release.
After 11 weeks, the tooth had grown from bud to maturity. The durability, shape, and natural stress responses mimicked that of a natural tooth. It also functioned like nature intended for a healthy tooth.
Human testing has not been announced. Read the full article here.

BELLEVUE DENTIST IMPLANTS
My most recent article is about Dentistry Implants. A summary is:
Dental Implants are changing how beautiful new smiles are created for people. Dental bridges used to be the standard restorative dental treatment when a tooth or two was missing and they are still used in many instances. However, people are discovering that dental implants are more comfortable and natural feeling than bridges or dentures in most cases.

A while back, DentalBlogs told you about Simroid, a lifelike robot that responds to dental students like an actual patient might. We also let you know that NYU School of Dentistry went to completely digital textbooks in 2007. This year’s cool technological training innovation leverages video games to teach implant dentistry.
Medical College of Georgia reports a team effort with BreakAway, a video game developer, in which an implant simulation game introduces students to patients with various clinical situations. The game allows students to examine and ask the virtual patient about medical history. Because each case is different, dental students must consider the virtual patient’s personality and clinical condition for optimal diagnosi...

The FDA has recalled some Stryker Custom Cranial Implant Kits due to uncertainty regarding the sterility of the products. A voluntary recall was initiated by Stryker in October of 2008, and the official FDA recall, Class 1, came this week. Proper sterilization testing was not completed on kits distributed between November 2007 and October 2008. Patients who receive improperly sterilized implants could experience infection such as meningitis, intracranial abscess…
…wound infection, sepsis, long-term neurological deterioration, and other severe medical conditions. Stryker suggests patients with these implants be monitored by a physician for six months following the initial surgery. See the ADA website for more on this topic. The second largest implant manufacturer, Straumann, has cut implant production due to lagging market growth, according to Reuters. Straumann has actually closed production plants to reduce work hours through the holiday season. Whether a layoff will follow is yet to be known.

Mini implants are thin implant posts that can be placed in the jaw in a 30-minute procedure. Placing four mini implants to anchor a denture takes about an hour. Dentists can attend weekend-long courses held by implant manufacturers to learn how to place mini implants, but some professionals don’t think the short training is enough. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry supports more extensive training for mini implants, as is required for traditional implant dentists. Former AAID President Dr. Kim Gowey states that dentists should be “well versed in implant dentistry before using mini implants,” in an article at www.marketwatch.com. She goes on to explain that there aren’t shortcuts for learning how to properly place implants, whether traditional or mini. Knowle...

Implantium, a newly launched dental implant company in the UK, recently released research stating that many dentists do not provide dental implant placement because of lack of training. Only one-third of UK dentists currently offer implants in their practice. More than half of surveyed dentists reported that training is the primary stumbling block that prevents them from providing implant services, and about one quarter claimed that equipment and implant supplies are a hindrance.

A quarter also reported that they plan to provide implant dentistry in the next year. Implantium will offer training and less costly implant products to incentivize dentists to begin placing dental implants. The company’s website currently features video demonstrations of implant procedures. Courses are ava...

Made intentionally for dental implants, Roxolid by Straumann is a titanium/zirconium alloy that’s 50% stronger than pure titanium. In addition to superior strength, Roxolid integrated better than titanium with bone tissue. Roxolid is in testing, but preliminary results from the first clinical trial were revealed in Warsaw, Poland at the 17th Annual Scientific Meeting of the European Association for Osseointegration. If tests go well, Roxalid may be on the market next year.

Implant Dentistry Poll

According to a recent Townie Poll in DentalTown.com Magazine, about a third of dentists surveyed perform implant placement. Of those, a third have done immediate load cases in the past year. A little over half of the responding dentists have placed bone grafts prior to implant placement. Those dentists who don’t place implants simply like doing other procedures better and are sufficiently busy without taking on implant dentistry. Read the poll here.
