The deaf and blind charity, coHearentVision, is looking to the future after funding cuts by Leeds City Council, which has awarded contracts for the delivery of support services to a Birmingham-based contractor and a national charity.

The council’s decision has prompted coHearentVision to implement cost-cutting measures including staff redundancies and downsizing from its landmark offices at Centenary House in Leeds. (Source: Deaf Village)

Rachel Shenton was just 12 years old when her father Geoff lost his hearing.

The Hollyoaks actress, who plays aspiring WAG Ann ‘Mitzeee’ Minniver (a character insiders claim is based on Cheryl Cole) in the series, says: "Dad went deaf in his right ear overnight. He had made a full recovery from throat cancer when he was 59 but his hearing was badly damaged.

"His doctors put this down to the chemotherapy treatment he was having, but told us they believed this would be a temporary side effect and were adamant it wouldn’t happen to the other ear. (Source: Deaf Village)

Forget Will and Kate's wedding... on Sunday 31 July at WOMAD festival, the charity Action on Hearing Loss (formerly RNID) will be attempting to break the world record for the greatest number of people playing air guitar at the same time. The current record is 1,883 people, but the charity hopes it can smash that to smithereens.

They will be playing Jimi Hendrix’s legendary track Purple Haze and guiding the guitar heroics on stage will be rock singer Justin Adams. (Source: Deaf Village)

Teenagers could suffer hearing loss because of passive smoking, according to new research.

Inhaling other people’s tobacco smoke almost doubled the risk of impaired hearing among adolescents, it was claimed.

The levels of damage were mild but could be enough to stop them hearing properly in class and leave them branded ‘troublemakers’. (Source: Deaf Village)

By Kate King, Advocacy Manager

Most of our Nucleus™ cochlear implant recipients and Baha® System users start their journey by reaching out to someone who has had a similar experience with hearing loss. It’s often a great benefit to learn from someone who understands and has been through this same experience and our Volunteer Advocates are here to help.

Cochlear™ Volunteer Advocates offer support and impartial information to individuals, parents and their families from the process of assessment and implantation, all the way through to rehabilitation and beyond. (Source: Deaf Village)

In 483 B.C., Medo-Persian King Xerxes (also known as Ahasuerus) threw a huge, 7 day party. I guess Xerxes did – and he had no qualms about spending it. At some point [...] (Source: Deaf Village)

As Cllr Mrs Marie Males comes to the end of her term of office, she presented a cheque for £10,000.00 to The Ear Foundation, which has been her chosen ‘Charity of the Year’ during her year in office as Mayor of Rushcliffe Borough Council in Nottingham.

Attending the event were children with cochlear implants who have been helped by the many fundraising activities hosted by the Mayor in the past 12 months. The cheque was presented to the charity’s Chief Executive, Dr Sue Archbold and Chairman, John Atkins. (Source: Deaf Village)
