Pharmalot… Pharmalittle… The Weekend Nears

Good morning, everyone. And how are you today? Another beautiful morning is rising over the Pharmalot corporate campus. However, we will be rolling in the sidewalks early as we prepare for a long weekend on this side of the pond. Our modest agenda includes a dip in the pool, hanging with the short people, catching up on some research (with thanks to our sources) and one of our favorite sports - hunting for mice. What about you? Anything special planned? Maybe a ride in the country, a barbecue in the backyard or how about a day at the beach? This will be Independence Day, after all, so perhaps this is a good time to think of suggestions for trimming the national debt. The symbolism is heavy, yes? Whatever you do, have a great time and be safe. See you soon…

For the second time in the past year, a study has been released indicating that the little blue impotence pill can not only make one hard, but hard of hearing. To be specific, the trio of popular meds for erectile dysfunction - Viagra, Cialis and Levitra - were linked to 47 suspected cases of sensorineural hearing loss – a rapid loss of hearing in one or both ears that can become permanent, according to a study in The Laryngoscope.
The UK researchers reviewed info from published literature and regulatory reports around the globe for incidents that may have been triggered by the pills. They found that hearing loss occurred within 24 hours of ingestion in nearly 67 percent of the cases, with Pfizer’s Viagra accounting for more than half of the total. The average age of those affected...

In recent weeks, lawsuits have been filed in the US and Canada by men who claim their sexual functioning dramatically decreased after taking the Merck Propecia pill that is used to treat hair loss (read one here). Now, a study has reported for the first time that the medicine does, indeed, cause persistent sexual dysfunction, contradicting information disseminated by the drugmaker.
Here is the bottom line: the researchers interviewed 71 otherwise healthy men between the ages of 21 and 46 years old. These men reported the onset of sexual side effects associated with the use of the drug and in which symptoms continued for at least three months, despite having discontinued treatment. [The med, by the way, is called finasteride and Merck markets a higher dose called Proscar to treat enlarged p...

How has Medicare been spending taxpayer dollars these last few years? What would you say if the federally funded health care program dished out more than $3.1 million to buy Pfizer’s Viagra and other impotence pills for seniors? Well, that’s what happened in 2007 and 2008, according to a new report from the US Department of Health & Human Services Office of the Inspector General.
As you might imagine, this was not supposed to happen. Medicare “should not have covered these drugs,” George Reeb, acting deputy inspector general for audit services at the HHS wrote in a report released yesterday. And he recommended that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services work with the FDA to maintain and distribute a list of prohibited drugs.
But what went wrong? The CMS bra...

The list of product web sites that manage to get consumers to actually do something contains some very familiar names, such as Viagra, Nexium, Yaz and Lunesta. Of course, these are used to treat rather common concerns and all have, at one time or another, been widely advertised. Yet they also share something else in common - often, coupons are available, according to a recent survey that found, on average, 74 percent of consumers took some type of action after visiting a product web site.
In other words, coupons appear to act as a motivator for following up in some fashion. “One thing we see when looking at satisfaction in years past is that there seems to be a high correlation beween satisfaction and a coupon,” says Meredith Ressi, president of Manhattan Research, which canvas...

On the car radio, I have several times happened upon “infomercial” programs touting the benefits of testosterone replacement therapy for men, broadcast by doctors who specialize in prescribing the drugs. They have lots of wonderful stories about men who feel younger, happier, and more vigorous because of their macho remedies. It’s a tribute to the power of the placebo.
I have been reviewing John Brinkley’s goat gland scam for a presentation on medical frauds. In an era before the isolation of the hormone testosterone, Brinkley transplanted goat testes into human scrotums in an attempt to treat impotence and aging. We are more sophisticated today — but not much. Longevity clinics and individual practitioners are offering testosterone to men as a general pick-me-up and anti-agi...

Forget Layoffs, Milwaukee Teachers Want Viagra

How’s this for a budget battle? With all of the economic pain around the country, the Milwaukee teachers union has chosen an interesting issue over which to draw a line in the sand - they want a judge to order the school board to reinstate Viagra and other impotence pills in their health insurance plans. Never mind a financial crisis that may cause hundreds of union members to lose their jobs.
The filing is the latest in a two-year legal campaign in which the union has argued, so far unsuccessfully, that the board’s policy of excluding impotence pills discriminates against male employees, the Associated Press writes. The union says Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and others are necessary treatment for “an exclusively gender-related condition,” and filed a lawsuit that was l...

If at first you don’t succeed….well, you know try again. A professor, whose earlier work indicating Viagra causes vision loss was discredited, has just published a new study that suggests the potential for long-term hearing loss after using Viagra and possibly similar drugs such as Cialis and Levitra, although results for those pills are inconclusive. The study is in the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (see the abstract).
“It appears from these findings that the current government warning regarding hearing loss and the use of PDE-5i medications is warranted,” says Gerald McGwin, a professor of epidemiology in the UAB School of Public Health, in a statement. “It has been hypothe...

Love, Sex & Intimacy in Recovery from alcoholism or addiction.
Sex in recovery can be the trickiest problem of all. So true for heterosexuals, gays and lesbians.
Why? Because there’s so much room for things to go wrong. And feelings get so distorted when they do.
Take sexual dysfunction. After cleaning up from chemicals, many dependent persons — particularly men — find that they’re unable to function sexually.
Impotence can be frustrating — for both partners. It can trigger a flood of self-loathing in a man and a current of tension and self-doubt in a woman.
If it happens to you, don’t panic or take it personally. Impotence usually isn’t a major crisis. Time, understanding, and simple communication almost always make it better.
That’s bec...

A PTO appeals board last Friday upheld a decision that an element, or claim, of the patent for a method of treating impotence didn’t cover a new invention. The patent claim was key to an infringement suit Pfizer filed in 2002 against Lilly over its rival Cialis drug. The decision, posted on the PTO’s Web site, can be appealed, Bloomberg continues. The patent expires in 2019, and Pfizer has another patent on Viagra that expires in 2012.

File this under stiff fine. The Swiss Competition Commission, which is known as WEKO, has tagged the Swiss units of Pfizer, Lilly and Bayer a total of $5.7 million for fixing the prices of their erectile dysfunction drugs - Viagra, Cialis and Levitra - through public price recommendations. These recommendations are usually made by pharmacies and medical practitioners, are illegal, Dow Jones writes. Bayer rejected the charge.
Earlier this year, WEKO concluded a 2006 investigation by deciding that the publication and observance of recommended retail prices for the pills represented illegal vertical collusion between the drugmakers and distributors. At the time, this was the biggest investigation to be undertaken by WEKO, which recommended sanctions. Whether $5.7 million in collective fines c...

It was reported in the Star that Men above 40 with sexual problems at risk of life-threatening illnesses
Conference organising chairman and head of Men’s Health Clinic at Universiti Sains Malaysia Assoc Prof Dr Shaiful Bahari Ismail said there were many cases of men with erectile dysfunction who had a high tendency of developing chronic diseases.
“We have had many cases of men who suffered from ED who died years later of diseases like diabetes or heart-related problems.”
“Although not conclusive, it is still a fact that penile dysfunction could cause problems to the heart.”
I suspect Dr. Shaiful was misquoted as it so oft happens in our local media. The fact is, chronic illnesses like diabetes mellitus will predispose men to heart disease. Such patients also are prone to erectile...

Another useless sex survey reported in the NST. If you believe it, then Malaysians are in a very sorry state as far as sex is concerned.

Four in 10 men cannot achieve a full erection while three in 10 women in Malaysia professed to wanting better sex. This is revealed in a survey conducted by pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc.
The survey also showed that 62 per cent of men and 73 per cent of women respondents were less than very or completely satisfied with sex.
The survey was conducted in 13 Asia Pacific countries.
A total of 102 men and 100 women in Malaysia responded to the survey online from May to July last year.
So it seems that 4/10 Malaysian men are “tofu” going by their erectile quality scale

“We can say that grade one is only as hard as tofu, followed by peele...

Did you know that one man in 10 will suffer from impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction, at some stage in their life?
But according to a new study, all guys need to do to reduce the risk of them suffering from this infliction is to get out of the house and into the garden.
Sounds pretty simple. According to the researchers at the Medical University of Vienna, who studied 674 guys aged 45 to 60, half an hour of gardening five days of week can make all the difference, reducing the risk of impotence by around 38%.
Put a bit more sweat into it, burn even more calories, and the risk reduction will be even greater.
Granted, it doesn’t have to be just gardening. Other forms of moderate exercise - dancing, cycling, and jogging - can also have the same effect.
But what a great argume...

Could this be considered an unapproved use? A 60-year-old Afghan tribal chief with four younger wives was given a few of the Pfizer impotence pills by a CIA officer, who returned a few days later to find a smiling man ready to divulge info about the Taliban. Wotta deal, eh?
While the CIA has a long history of buying information with cash, the growing Taliban insurgency has prompted the use of novel incentives and creative bargaining to gain support in some of the country’s roughest neighborhoods, according to The Washington Post.
In their efforts to win over notoriously fickle warlords and chieftains, CIA operatives have used a variety of personal services. These include pocketknives and tools, medicine or surgeries for ailing family members, toys and school equipment, tooth extract...

Chicago urologist Gerald Chodak MD has launched an innovative doctor-to-patient series of videos. “This is an evidence-based site,” Dr. Chodak says, “aimed at providing free information in an easier format than the usual sites that require reading. Over 60 videos are now completed on every aspect of this disease.”
Once past the loud intro music, his videos — like good office consults — are clear and direct introductions to almost every topic that may bring a man to a urologist to talk about prostate health or prostate cancer. Of course a patient (and his significant other) can’t, in this case, bring up their own questions. And 4 minute videos don’t go into depth. Also, these videos are strictly face-the-camera chats, without visual aids. But ...

This study is also examining whether there is a difference in the way Viagra affects male and female athletes.
A University of Marywood study is measuring the potential effects of Viagra as an antidote to air pollution, produced outdoors by the exhaust of factories and automobiles and indoors by ice-resurfacing machines. Studies involving animals, and children in Mexico City, indicated pollution causes pulmonary hypertension. If that could be alleviated for athletes by Viagra, “performance is going to be enhanced,” Rundell, the lead researcher of the pollution study, tells the Times.
The earliest the World Anti-Doping Agency could place Viagra on its list of prohibited substances would be September 2009, five months before the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, a spok...

The FDA has approved a new formulation of the impotence pill that is likely to be quite popular, since the latest version allows men to “attempt sexual activity at anytime between doses,” as Lilly says in its statement. The new 2.5 or 5mg dose is a boon for guys who hope to have more sex, about twice a week, in fact, the drugmaker calculates.
Until now, Cialis has been taken as needed - the 5, 10 and 20 mg dosages provide effectiveness for up to 36 hours. This may be good news for Lilly shareholders, men or women, because the new pill won’t come cheap. A month’s supply of the existing 5 mg dose costs about $350 or so. Insurers, however, may not be happy. And don’t forget that little problem about a hearing loss.
But about women who will be concerned that once-...
