There is a ton of things that can touch us in a week. In one day alone, I can easily get lost in every day activities and not only in what happens to us and around us, but what happens within us.
One of my greatest fears is that I will allow too much outside noise to silence the most important one. My own.
As I reflect on another week past, I recall the President’s State of the Union address, a conversation with a friend, a dream I had beckoning me in the morning, an episode of The View where Michael Jackson’s sister Rebbie Jackson talks about her daughter’s bipolar disorder diagnosis. It’s so much to digest that I can easily lose sight of the way I’m feeling right now. I can too easily forget what I’m doing, how I’m interacting with those around m...

Teens and acne — the two seem to go together.
While we have long suspected a link between teenage acne and depressive or suicidal thoughts, a new study out of Norway lends additional scientific proof to this link.
Both teenager men and women are at greater risk for suicidal thoughts if they have severe acne — teenage girls are at twice the risk, and teenage boys are at three times greater risk.
The study was conducted on 3,775 Norwegian adolescents aged 18-19, and compared those with acne compared to those with clear skin.
But it gets worse…

The study also found that those with severe acne were twice as likely to have few friends. They were also far more likely to have poor grades, and to have never had sex.
Who knew that acne could be so debilitating? Well, actually, we...

In order to prove the value of social media, it’s important to understand how it differs from traditional advertising.
If you’re like most hospitals or medical schools, you’ve already moved into the social media arena. But now, you may be getting questions from your CMO or COO about how it’s working. Or you may be trying to decide if you’re allocating the appropriate resources to social media. How can you know if it’s really working?
I recently read a post by Katie Saffey that features a side-by-side comparison and offers a good starting point for social media measurement.
Engagement vs. impressions
Social media success relies on engagement vs. advertising’s traditional number of impressions. The ability to engage one-on-one with your audience can allow you to deliver custom...

When you put yourself into a new social context, one of the things you learn is a new vocabulary. This is natural and normal. However, you must give care to develop vocabulary habits that will benefit and not hinder you in the future.

I started college in 1994. After a few weeks on campus, I realized there were quite a few words and phrases that were in common usage that I was going to start using simply by being around them. While most of them were benign, there were several that I was a bit unsure whether I wanted to adopt or not. I’m not talking about obscenities. I’m talking about things like:

Crap – Often used as an expletive, adjective or adverb.
Sucks – Used to describe an undesirable state or occurrence, often in the phrase “that sucks”.

First of all, there are three companies providing digital impressions – Cadent iTero, 3M, and Sirona.
Anyone looking to invest in digital imaging should compare contrast the pluses and minuses of each brand. Two other companies are looking to get into the market with this technology, so keep that in mind, too.
In a very short time, digital dental impressions have become the obvious future of what we’re going to be doing in the industry. Be sure to look for the technology at big exhibits and shows so that you can learn about its capabilities and limitations.
We’ve had iTero in my downtown Denver dental office for over a year and a half, and we’ve had tremendous success with it. Consistently, patients are very impressed. There’s always a “wow” factor with new technology, which ...

We already know that first impressions can tell a lot about a person. You meet someone, you shake their hand, they smile, you smile back, you introduce yourself. Prior psychological research has suggested that even such a simple, basic interchange creates first impressions that are then difficult to change once made.
But did you know that even a photo of you can create a first impression? New research discussed over at one of Newsweek’s blogs demonstrates how easily — and accurately — photos can convey information about our personalities. Simply by just looking at natural photos of other people, you can usually do a pretty good job of accurately gauging 9 out of 10 personality characteristics:

In the study, observers looked at full-body photos of 123 people they had neve...

From EurekaAlert:
First impressions do matter when it comes to communicating personality through appearance, according to new research by psychologists Laura Naumann of Sonoma State University and Sam Gosling of The University of Texas at Austin.
Despite the crucial role of physical appearance in creating first impressions, until now little research has examined the accuracy of personality impressions based on appearance alone. . . .
“In an age dominated by social media where personal photographs are ubiquitous, it becomes important to understand the ways personality is communicated via our appearance,” says Naumann. “The appearance one portrays in his or her photographs has important implications for their professional and social life.”

Radiation-free OCT has been used in optometry for a while, but now, applications in dentistry are evolving, and you’ll be amazed at what this little toy can do. Because it produces two and three-dimensional images as detailed as a single micron and as deep as 3mm into tissue, OCT can help dentists:

Detect caries early
Assess for periodontal disease
Assess for oral cancer
Create digital impressions
Orthodontic treatment planning
Endodontic imaging from inside a tooth’s canal

According to an article in Dental Products Report, Dr. Craig Gimble, Executive VP of Clinical Affairs for Lantis Laser, Inc., believes that optical coherence tomography will replace 70% of radiography in dentistry.
How it works… OCT scans gather cross-section images of hard and soft tissues by using fiber optic...

D4D Digital Impression System
This month, in a Dental Products Report Web Exclusive, Dr. Gary Radz reviews the benefits and downfalls of various impression materials. His quest for the perfect impression material leads him through polyvinyl silicone (PVS), polyether (PE), alginate alternatives (AA), and on to digital impressions. Dr. Radz calls digital impressions “fairly simple and seamless.” He’s used the iTero for eight months and has found improved precision because of the technology. Read the full article here.
Can the Internet offer a mirror into your personality? Apparently, the answer is yes, according to recently published research.
The researchers conducted the experiment on 37 undergraduate students who were interviewed and rated on how likable they were. Their Facebook pages were also independently rated on how likable they were.

The key finding was that participants rated as more likable in the flesh also tended to be rated as more likable based on their Facebook page. Moreover, an analysis of the cues used to make these judgments also showed parallels between the two mediums.
Video-recordings of the face-to-face contacts suggested it was participants who were more non-verbally expressive (through facial expression and tone of voice) who tended to be rated as more likable.
Similarly, ...

Ask the average Joe about what he hates about dental visits. Top few responses would likely be needles, drills, pain, and taking impressions. Dental technology has come so far, so fast… with TENS, topical numbing, The Wand, STA, and Comfort Control Syringe, you can offer your patients alternatives to needles. Lasers, air abrasion, and less hyperactive electric drills (reduced vibration and heat) provide a more comfortable experience for the dental patient, as well. Pain is manageable with drugs, of course. And dental impressions are a necessary evil.
Digital dental impressions are relatively new. However, there’s no lack of competition. If you’re considering a digital impression system to improve patient comfort and clinical accuracy, as well as lab communication, you must see t...

Straumann Cuts Production

The second largest implant manufacturer, Straumann, has cut implant production due to lagging market growth, according to Reuters. Straumann has actually closed production plants to reduce work hours through the holiday season. Whether a layoff will follow is yet to be known.

Straumann announced CARES Ceramic (Computer-Aided Restoration Service) in October in Berlin. CARES employs digital impressions, which eliminates the need for traditional impression methods. The digital image can be submitted directly to the production center at Straumann. In a matter of only a few days, a custom titanium implant is delivered to the dentist’s office.
