The national unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to make its two lakh members across the country, especially senior medical practitioners, more tech savvy. “We have noticed that, unlike young medical professionals, senior doctors by and large lack computer proficiency. They still use paper and pen for their daily records. The project will help such doctors cope with the competitive world and become tech savvy,” said national vice-president of IMA, Dr Devendra Shirole. This is great news - and will provide a huge impetus to the healthcare IT market in India ! Patients and doctor will benefit - and so will healthcare IT companies such as Plus91 ( in which I am an angel investor !) (Source: The Patient's Doctor)

Narayanan Krishnan used to be an award winning chef with Taj Hotels in India. Upon noticing the poverty and hunger afflicting his country, Krishnan decided to quit his lucrative job, and now runs a not-for-profit organization that provides three meals a day to India’s hungry and indigent people, most of whom are elderly. He also bathes them, and provides shaves and haircuts. For all his efforts, Krishnan was recently presented with the CNN Heroes award. In Krishnan’s words, happiness comes from giving, and the joy that comes with making other people happy and healthy. The next time you need a pick-me-up, instead of treating yourself, do something nice for a friend, or even a stranger. You might be surprised at the potent results.
By Ilya ShapiroWhile all the hot constitutional action of late, on issues ranging from Obamacare to gay marriage to immigration, has been in the lower courts — or even in Congress! — the Supreme Court still goes about its daily business. After last year’s blockbuster term, however, this term is pretty low-profile aside from a spate of First Amendment cases (funeral protests, violent video games, school choice tax credits, public financing of election campaigns, etc.). And so it was yesterday, when Supreme Court arguments over securities law and Western water rights were overshadowed by news of cases on which the Court decided not to rule:

Without comment, the Court denied an unusual request — a petition for a writ of mandamus — in the Gulf Coast global warming la...

Concerned that many of its drugmakers may be taken over in a wave of mergers and acquisitions, the Indian government is considering a proposal that would place a 49 percent lid on foreign direct investment in its pharmaceutical companies. Officials from the ministry of commerce and industry and ministry of health have met several times in recent weeks, and more meetings are scheduled, according to LiveMint.
The initiative stems from a paper floated last summer by the Indian Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion in response to a growing wave of deals in which multi-national drugmakers have been acquiring Indian pharma companies. Global drugmakers have espoused the “emerging markets’ trend as they desperately seek to bolster their thinning pipelines.

By Andrew J. CoulsonTen years ago, the American Indian Charter School scored last among Oakland’s public middle schools. Today it’s the top-scoring public middle school in all of California, according to the state’s own Academic Performance Index ranking.
What changed? It wasn’t the school’s demographics. American Indian’s enrollment is still almost all low income and minority, and contrary to almost everyone’s expectations, these inner-city kids now outperform their age-mates in even the wealthiest districts in California. And the school accepts all applicants, so, no, they don’t cherry-pick. The only cherry-picking that happens at American Indian is when elite East-Coast boarding schools recruit their middle-school graduates, offering ...

This is Chap 1 from Dr Nadkarni's book, Healing the Sick Healthcare System. The Health–care-system is very complex . It is asystem in which any person with any perceived illness seeksmedical assistance to get rid of his illness, even if the perceivedillness is false, in the sense that it may not be a true organicillness. The primary needs of the individual are food, clothing andshelter. Health and education come next in order. Food, clothingand shelter are considered most essential for the survival of anindividual. Yet every need under these heads cannot beconsidered as essential. While rice, chapatti and dal maybeconsidered most essential, the same cannot be said about‘pickles’, ‘papad’ and ‘pista’, ‘badam’ and such dry fruits couldlegitimately be considered as luxuries. ...

There is no question that surrogacy remains one of the most complex issues society faces today. While it is an effective way of helping some infertile couples to have a baby, it raises a number of complex ethical and legal issues which we have still not been able to tackle effectively. How do we ensure that infertile women who do not have a uterus can use surrogacy treatment to have a baby , since this is the only medical treatment option available to them ? How can we ensure that poor infertile women are not coerced or exploited into becoming host wombs ? How can we make sure doctors provide surrogacy treatment only to couples who actually need it ? How can we resolve the challenging issues of genetic parenthood and social responsibilities ? And how do we resolve the rights of the genetic ...

I’ve provided more detail on the analysis in the Atomic ezine on SpectroscopyNOW this week, but also wanted to provide some additional background for readers and so I had a few questions for Aboud Jumbe of the Department of Environmental Science, at Bangalore University, Jnana Bharathi Campus who works with N. Is this problem of heavy metal contamination killing wildlife?
At the moment, we haven’t come across any in situ analysis that provides us with a documented and a direct impact of heavy metal pollution and wildlife to the point...

Under the new rules, a doctor can conduct or participate in research funded by drug and other health care companies, but must obtain permission from authorities to carry out particular projects. And docs must also ensure research projects get clearance from an institutional ethics body. Public endorsements of specific drugs are also a no-no.

Many Indians will agree that the Indian healthcare system needs an overhaul and quite a few young entrepreneurs are trying out clever new ideas to help patients get better medical care. A good example is the use of PHRs to help patients become empowered consumers. The major stumbling block they face is getting acceptance from doctors. We all know that patients will do anything their doctors will tell them to do. However, if you suggest they try something using their own initiative , which their doctor has not explicitly recommended , most become passive observers and flatly refuse. They feel that medical science is best left upto their doctor . They don't know enough to try to do anything about it. My doctor knows best is a very comforting mantra ( even though it may be false !)Doctors play...

How Plus91 software helps doctors to keep their accounts

While doctors love earning money, they hate keeping accounts ; and interactions with accountants are high on a doctor’s “hate to do” list. A doctor who owns his own clinic has the thankless job of having to maintain accounts. Most doctors have varied methods of maintaining financial records, but all of them get the jitters when it comes to filing their income tax returns. So much paper work and so much time wasted ! Isn’t there a simpler way of managing your accounts? Well technology and software run banks, so why not your clinic as well ?This is a guest post from Aditya Patkar, Marketing Director of Plus91, as to how software can help doctors to manage their accounts more efficiently !Plus91 has integrated its Practice Management EMR solution with a simple and effective accounts m...

Why don't Indian doctors use medical software in their practises ?

Technology infiltrated medicine a long time ago . Doctors are quite savvy and are happy to use advanced technology to improve patient care. Today, all the imaging specialties use computer hardware and imaging processing software routinely . So why don't doctors use EMRs and practise management software routinely to take care of their patients ? Isn't it sad that while hotels use specialised software programs routinely to provide hospitality to their customers, most hospitals are still stuck in the pen and paper stage - forget about individual clinics and doctors. In fact, most doctors use their PC just for word processing and sending email - which means that this powerful electronic brain sitting on their desktop is very poorly utilised. This is is a hangover from the old days when computer...

10 reasons why Indian doctors say NO to medical software

I am an angel investor in a startup, Plus91, which makes web-based electronic medical record software for doctors in India. There is no doubt that medical record keeping leaves a lot to be desired in Indian clinics. Most doctors are very poorly organised, and don't even bother to keep records of their patients . They often do not remember anything about the patient ; and forget even his name ( as many patients have learned the hard way). This is hardly surprising, given that most Indian doctors are so busy. If the patient is not well organised and does not keep his own records, then his care suffers enormously. This is especially true for patients with chronic illnesses, who may need to see many different specialists ( most of whom don't have a clue what the other doctor is doing).I actuall...

My friend underwent an angioplasty today for treatment of his ischemic heart disease. His interventional cardiologist , Dr Kirit Punamiya, is an extremely talented doctor. He has a team of competent technicians; and has single-handedly performed a number of extremely complex and technically challenging procedures such as atherectomics with a rotablator; and clot aspirations in patients with acute myocardial infarction. Cardiologists from all over the world recognize his technical expertise and invite him to demonstrate advanced procedures and teach them .The tragedy is that very few patients know about his skills. Most patients simply do not have the ability to judge a doctor’s technical expertise. They feel that all interventional cardiologists are equally good - and often end up select...

Diabetes is popping up in children like never before, but the prevalence of diabetes in Indian children is close to epidemic standards. To help combat this, a special education program has been developed by tribal leaders and educators.

The new curriculum, which seeks to educate children about diabetes and how they can maintain a healthy lifestyle, is expected to be incorporated into classroom lectures this fall. The program will be brought to schools “throughout New Mexico, Arizona and parts of Colorado and Utah.” The new program was tested last year by a select number of tribal schools.

The New York Times writes up the revelation that Pakistan is rapidly expanding its nuclear weapons arsenal. Congressmen and Senators, we’re told, are worried that US military aid might be diverted to this purpose.
Two points here.
1. Insofar as we are giving money to Pakistan, it probably doesn’t matter much if we restrict it to our priorities. Money is fungible — by funding something Pakistan might have paid for itself, we free its funds for other priorities. Maybe it’s the case that the Pakistanis view aid that US gives them for counterinsurgency and counterterrorism capability as purely wasteful — and therefore wouldn’t spend a dime if we didn’t provide it. But probably they would have bought much of this capability if we didn’t, a...

So here's something I feel fairly outraged about, just 'cause it seems like unfair piling on: because of an anti-abortion amendment Senator David Vitter (R-Louisiana) attached to the reauthorization of the American Indian Healthcare Improvement Act, the Act is being held up yet again. Some people think the writing has been on the wall for some time about this (you can read more about the history of this mess at Indian Country Today), but the reality is that the state of health care for Native American people on and off the reservations in this country is a national shame ... and to tie the fate of health services to the perennial third rail of politics is a travesty.Hat tip to the Kaiser Health Disparities Report (which does a swell job getting you your weekly dose of reality and high blood...

Abortion is “something that has fascinated me since my days in medical college.” That is a direct quote from one of my first serious posts after I started this blog. In that post I had declared; “To us in India, abortion is almost a non-issue.”
In a related post a few days later, I answered some questions that had been raised in the comments on the first post.

About our citizens view of abortion. Specifically - Do they think it is ‘okay’?
After 35 years of legal ‘abortion on-demand in India’ (thank you Dr. Flea - the link obviously doesn’t work now. It was to a post by Flea where he linked to my post and used the phrase to describe the situation re. abortion in India) I think the answer is definitely yes. Most Indians think that abortion is ‘okay’...

It has been a less than fun week for me. I got sick. Quite sick. In fact 2008 will forever be remembered as The Year I Puked On My Birthday And I Wasn’t Even Drunk. And if you don’t know me then you cannot fully understand how traumatic this was on a couple levels. First of all I suffer from this pretty severely. And as such I will not get into my particular lurgie with any great details. Secondly it was my 39th birthday. The LAST YEAR I will be in my 30s. A dinner party was planned and had to be cancelled. In fact my whole birthday weekend was a complete blur of ick and grossness. I woke up Saturday (March 1-my birfday) quite early with terrible cramps. Whole torso cramps opposed to your typical gurgley tummy type situation. Only now that I am feeling better do I understand how sick...

So I like to think I am a very enlightened, tolerant and open minded sort of gal. I have my own little quirky life filled with my own little quirky likes and dislikes and as such maintain a motto of, “Whatever melts your butter.” While I may not agree with or even remotely understand others and what they do in their lives I also don’t like to harsh on anyone’s mellow by being all judgmental and shit. Everybody has to do their own thing, right? So along with being enlightened, tolerant and open minded I am also mentally about as mature as a teenaged boy. A very poorly brought up, over imaginative, and under stimulated adolescent male. Combine that with an uncontrollable reflex to joke about inappropriate things and I am exactly the wrong person to take to a funeral, bris, beat poet...

Filed under: Drugs, Daily News, CareThis is sad: an elderly British man was the victim of an accidental insulin overdose. Leslie Avenell, who was 82, had diabetes. He was living in a care home where he had the assistance of a nurse. Turns out, the nurse injected Mr. Avenell with 84 units of insulin - ten times the correct dose. The death has been ruled an accidental mishap caused by neglect. The awful mistake took place after the nurse misread discharge papers for Mr. Avenell from a local hospital, which stated the patient should be given "8U" (eight units) of insulin. So ruled the coroner assigned to investigate the case.Complicating the case: postmortem results show that Mr. Avenell died from bronchial pneumonia. However, the coroner says he cannot rule out the fact that the overdose con...

You know what? Most guys ask for your number or for a date. Not these guys. They come on a Saturday night to lurk around my building bothering the neighbours with their sirens and flashing lights.Stalking me under the pretext of checking on a sick old lady. Saw right through that one, I did.And then they came back on Monday night too. Jeeez, guys! Seriously, just send me some flowers or a box of chocolates. Leave the poor old lady from across the street alone.FINE! I'll go on a date with you. As long as you wear those cute boots and suspenders. Clearly, my 'glowing' skin and matching outfit really dazzled these guys. I can't get rid of them. (Source: Von Krankipantzen)
