A new Health and Human Services (HHS) initiative, Partnership for Patients, is calling hospitals to focus on nine specific types of medical errors where the potential is great for increased care. The initiative has two over arching goals: keep hospitals patients’ symptoms from worsening, and facilitate patients’ treatment process from the hospital environment to other care settings. This ambitious project’s goal is to reduce readmissions by 20% by 2013.

By Andrew J. CoulsonU. of Ark. political scientist and education scholar Jay Greene has been blogging about the proper role of science in education policy, and his thoughts (continued here) are well worth reading. In particular, he warns that trying to scientifically find “the one best way” of evaluating teachers or of teaching reading and then attempting to impose that putatively best solution on all children is ultimately misguided and destructive.
I’d add that it is also unscientific. Science is humble. You have to be willing to rethink and potentially discard theories that repeatedly fail to coincide with reality. Well, the theory that governments can operate effective, efficient, innovative education systems from the top down was never supported by the evidence i...

“We want our employees to spend their time on real issues,” said Charlie Salter, VP of Benefits at ConAgra. He means it. Charlie and ConAgra have built their healthcare benefits around some simple concepts that are yielding impressive results. How impressive? Close to flat healthcare cost trend since 2007.
Charlie’s work is part of a growing trend among America’s most innovative companies: Designing healthcare benefits in ways that have a real impact on quality and cost. It’s why I [recently] asked Charlie to share the podium with me in Boca Raton. ConAgra is showing it’s possible to control healthcare costs by helping people do the right thing.
The vision behind ConAgra’s programs is simple: Employees have to be responsible for managing their own care. But, says Charlie,...

We’re hearing about health care reform every day, it seems, especially since President Obama is trying to pass legislation from the rising costs for Americans. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to see that a group of Milwaukee area employers seem to be ahead of the curve. They have found a way to lower costs while still providing great health care options for their employees.

Four years ago, a group of fourteen Milwaukee employers teamed up to figure out how to lower their health care costs. They employers got bids from area hospitals and physicians, and when someone submitted too high a bid, it was thrown out. They also worked with the people who submitted bids to make sure the health care was up to par, and that the costs remained at a reasonable level. (Not that they wo...

Confronted with the question as to whether or not there clinical research supporting the use of high-vibration platforms in strength training to increase bone density and muscle mass in the elderly (or any age group) I had a delve through the literature and decided to share the following.
Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a new type of exercise that uses an oscillating platform on which the individual stands or sits. The tonic vibration of the platform is believed to activate the fast-twitch muscle fibers, forcing them to contract reflexively. Manufacturers of these platforms claim benefits ranging from increasing muscle and bone strength, to improving balance, flexibility, and circulation. In recent years, WBV has been used in research with elderly patients to determine if it can prevent oste...

Media could add amazing brainpower to turn around financial busts and lead us into booms, but it didn't happen in newscasts I read today. Have you too seen increasingly dark reports? It doesn't have to be that way. For a media turnaround into brainpowered fiscal growth, they'd: 1. Showcase success stories about people who rewire their brains for investing in tough times. 2. Highlight adventures that show people who turn brainpower into financial prosperity, in a lean market. 3. Print compelling interviews with financial gurus who promote innovative solutions, that overcome past financial failures.4. Avoid fear tactics used by losers in the financial community, and instead identify and promote courageous experts with leadership ability.5. Support intelligent risks that reac...

Right now, many would argue it’s the US. But the European Commission and members of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations today are releasing details of plan to end Europe’s declining international role in medical research, Reuters reports.
To be called the Innovative Medicines Initiative, the effort will offers grants to academic institutes and small companies to research ways of beating bottlenecks in the drug development process. Teams of commercial and not-for-profit researchers will be able to seek support on condition that their findings are publicly shared in an effort to stimulate...

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disorder characterized, not surpisingly, by recurrent, unstopping obsessive thoughts, impulses or images, and compulsions which are repetitive behaviors or mental acts (like praying).
OCD typically has been challenging to treat. While medications and psychotherapy are often used, traditionally neither treatment has included one’s significant other. Why would you?
Well, OCD is exacerbated by stress. Relationships can inadvertently reinforce some of the obsessions or compulsions, so it may be important for the significant other to better understand their partner’s OCD.
A new study will look at cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy in the treatment of OCD, but as a part of couples therapy:

“First we will find out about the OCD symp...

The European Commission is poised to agree a $2.9 billion partnership this week designed to win back Europe’s place as a center for global medical innovation, The Financial Times reports.
The Innovative Medicines Initiative, financed equally by pharma and the EC, will support research by academic and industry groups over seven years designed to speed up the predictable safety and efficacy testing. The move aims to boost collaboration between commercial companies, universities and regulators to more rapidly develop “pre-competitive” tests and accelerate the launch of innovative drugs, the FT writes.
It reflects long-standing worries that Europe has been losing out in medical innovation to the US, and increasingly to parts of Asia, where large pharmaceutical companies and s...

No matter how much talent you bring to bargaining tables, key barriers can block future growth or sustainability, unless you tackle entrepreneurial roadblocks. 1. Too labor intensive. You can’t do parts of every contract detail and keep the boat afloat at the same time. Have you tried to hire people who bring talent to parts you do less well on a project by project basis?2. Travel eats up time and effort while being away from home ... shrinks your bottom line. Have you thought about virtual communication? I’m thinking about blogs and telecommuting that save costs and offer advantages of working with diverse networks. 3. People refuse to pay for unproven ideas, yet time-tested research and development needs support. Why not network with people rather than advertise wi...
